What's new

Bollywood Corner

Kimono???Why would anybody wear this for a function???Especially we Indians???So if we like and take one culture..we have to take other one too..so that you do not question our complex???? nobody wears those....even in china :D

kimono1.jpg

by wearing ethnic indian dress, they(hollywood actresses) are not displaying inferiority complex..but showing that they are comfortable and confident and want to try something new.. and there is a difference, they will wear anything to look different..dress from any country..because they dont aspire to a particular culture...but in our case it is only western clothing that is copied, because they aspire to be like them..you will never see a bollywood actress wearing a kimono at a function.

Okay. So they wear what normal people do not wear for a photoshoot or for a function...it is comfortable..and cconfident..

we wear something we do not wear everyday...we are suffering from inferiority complex...

they wear a saree one single day...they are not trying to be a particular culture

but we wear for functions..we re trying to ape them....

amazing consistency in logic!!

we wear what common people do not wear....we are inferior...totally not realizing common people even in usa do not wear those dresses on daily basis...

some dresses are not supposed to be worn daily basis !!!

you guys are easily brushing off something that is well known..people like to copy the culture of those they aspire to, the elite is always the first one.. it happens in every sphere..even a black when he becomes well to do, aligns himself more with the whites than with the blacks..(not generalizing, just giving an example that is true for many cases)... same happens with people in the villages who start getting conscious of their mother tongue, because the urban ruling people speak another language..so they start feeling inferior regarding their language.. for example punjabi and urdu.. happens in all sphere, but if you dont want to agree that is fine.. but this is not my psycho analysis, this is an obvious sociological phenomena.

You do understand the amount of garbage you are taking right?? seriously????? It is not the black man's problem...it is your problem that you look at a black man hanging with a white man as some kind of inferiority complex...I actually think you do lot of things in rela life to not feel inferior...so now you think everybody else in the real world does the same!! most of times people make decisions because they like or because their peers are doing it.....inferior regarding their language????? sociological phenomina?? so why would I feel inferior over me being a telugu...you do not make any sense mate !! I am sorry...

that's Sophie Choudhury with prabhu deva.. not a good actor, and a decent singer..but she can speak many languages and is beautiful..great combo.

^^^ Oh ..I heard that name before !!!!! she is beautifull....if they are together.now....prabhu is lucky :D !!

navroks, is there any place where i can watch this..i want to watch SRK's tribute to Yash Chopra in particular.

^^^^ No.

Reviews are decent...though two people I trust gave unfavorable reviews (masand and anupama chopra).......no release where I live. Should wait for a good print....

Dressing is politics. Not for nothing Gandhi was bare chested and Ambedkar wore suits.

I heard that dabangg 2 collections at the bos office werent that great, as they originally thought to be. Is it true navrocks? Has Salman come to an end of his run at the BO (he will always be big but maybe not as big as the last few years)...because aside from Wanted, and a little bit of bodyguard he did some really masala movies which werent good.

Yeah...it did not do well...around 140 crores....which is less compared to EK tha tiger(but that had katrina too)

movie was crap as well..so no repeat audience.....

budget was around 80 or 90 crores too...so even profit margin is not that high....

likes of english vinglish and kahaani made with 13 to 14 crores..collected 60 and 102 respectively...I think it is about time we project these as better financial sucesss than just look at the numbers !!

Why are movies measured by financial success? Either by how mcuh they grossed, or how mcuh profit they made.

I don't care that Dabaang 2 or Jab Tak Hai Jaan grossed how many crores. The movies were utter garbage.

Can't Indians rate movies by their actual content? Maybe by an imdb rating or an equivalent.

Indians :D rate movies by their content itself..if you ask 10 people...10 out of 10 people will say english vinglish or Kahaani or GOW or vicky donor etc etc as best movies this year. However since Ghajini Crosses 100 crores for the first time in Indian cinema...Media kept pushing this 100 crore as some kind of a bench mark for collection. I cant post the youtube link now...but there is this anupama chopra's interview with all the big directors..and how they rate themselves getting into 100 crore club..none of them value it as much. Number of theatres..increase in ticket prises...earlier up untill early 2000's..big movies used to realease in 1000 odd centers..now it is what 6000 odd theatres for a few..ofcourse the collection will be big. If Sridevi can collect 60 crores with an offbeat movie...making a comeback after 15 years..what is the big deal in Salman collection 140 with crap masala films??..it is more due to increased reach of bollywood now that movies are collection bigger amounts than before !!!! ... 8 out of 10 people who watch Dabangg and likes will not like it...but it is pushed as a hit coz of the numbers which is nonsense!!! I think the film media has to take a lot of blame for this..they pitch these numbers as some kind of star war between Salman..Aamir..SRK.,.Ajay..Akshay..and hrithik...and I think these stars also encourage them because it will allow them to get huge renumerations ..so huge that 50% of the budget of any big movie is a star renumeration..(actor and actress ) !!!!! Salman and Katrina took 40 to 50 odd crores from Ek tha tiger...movie budget was around 90 ...ridiculous!!!!

But I think we will soon see obsession with numbers decreasing as even small budget offbeat films are crossing 100 crores..like barfi..and kahaani..even oh my god got close to 100 !!!!

I saw a trailer of an upcoming movie starring akshay Kumar and manoj Vajpayee..it is based on black money issue I reckon..I m a big fan of Vajpayee after rajneeti..hey navroks can you provide more details about that movie?

Dressing is politics. Not for nothing Gandhi was bare chested and Ambedkar wore suits.

Gandhi was wearing less because he came from an affluent family..so he could sacrifice his clothing to make a statement...ambedkar did not, so when he got the chance he wore suits..

From what i have read about dabbang2, its total budget ( including prints and promotion) was about 60 crore.

they sold the satellite rights for 45 crore and the music+ dvd rights for another 15 crore. Arbaz had covered his cost of the movie even before he finished his movie! That's what you call a great business mind!

So anything the movie made in theatres is profit for them and distributors. As of now it seem the movie had made 140 crores. That's a huge number considering many people haven't liked the film as much.

I haven't seen the movie yet so can't comment on the content of the movie.

So circuit got his own degree, LLB, after playing second fiddle to munnabhai mbbs..

In terms of box office salman khan is way ahead. This year two top grossing movie "ek tha tiger" and "dabangg2" belongs to salman. Even last year and 2010 he topped with bodyguard, dabang/ ready.
Following are some top movies on box office for 2012

1) ek tha tiger-- 186 crore
2) dabangg 2 -- 155 crore(expected)
3) rowdy rathore-131 crore
4) agnnepath 121 crore
5) Barfi--- 112 crore
6) jab tak hai jahan-- 101 crore

That's what I said. People dress the way they dress for a reason. Film stars dress fancy, so to avoid looking like you and me. They make a statement.. 'We are different from you. We are showmen.'

Indian movies don't reflect the real India. A movie star's life, life style, work ethics, speech, income.. nothing is same as of a common man. Why do you expect their clothes would be no different?

Navrocks.....any idea on "ghanchakkar". Directed by Raj kumar Gupta, starring Emraan Hashmi and Vidhya Balan, looks like a crime comedy movie.

Hashmi plays an ex-con guy wheedled into going that path once again by his pushy better half, played by Balan leading to a wacky, bumpy ride.

I have almost Zero doubt that this is going to be One of the best films of 2013....Shaithan by Bejoy was Gem !!!!! Nice to See Tabu after a while...Legend ...very under rated...If only she made the movies she did the 90's and early 2000's now...she would have been bigger than Vidya..infact Vidya is nothing !!!!

^^^^^ what an awesome observation. :D I will add more...Tabu is older than vidya..Vidya is younger than Tabu . Tabu has Padmasri ...Vidya doesn't :D ...Vidya is married...Tabu isnt...but seriously I think Tabu is one of the tallest indian actress??? or Sushmita sen /Deepika ??

never had a thing for tall actresses..they somehow lack grace when they dance.. i will never marry someone like tabu because it is like marrying a camel.. even bipasha, she looks like a body builder.. cute things come in small packages..like neha sharma, minnisha lamba, juhi chawla, mamta kulkarni..those are my kind of actresses.

I like all kind of girls :D ....Tabu was good looking when she was young..she is now 41....she starred in one of my all time favorite romantic/Family movie ever....A Telugu movie called Ninne Pelladutha( meaning I will marry you) (1996 ) with Nagarjuna...I do not even know how many times I have watched it.... that...and I think she is an incredible actress..Maachis...Maqbool...chandni bar....

we should have some short and dark actors doing the main roles.. like nawazuddin.. right now it has become a formula that you must have six pack abs, well set teeth, perfect hairline before you are cast in the movie.. there are exceptions, but they come only though their acting talent like Irfan, manoj bajpayee, nawazuddin..

i like this change happening..earlier we had pot bellied actors with moobs like shatru and sanjeev kumar, but after salman khan we saw the new generation of shahid kapoors, zayed khan, fardeen khan, saif, hrithik..even the new kids in student of the year..all having physical beauty...now the common man looking actor is striking back at the empire.

^^^ Just like all kinds of films are being appreciated these days....we also have all kinds of actors having their fair share !!! Vidya...Nawazudhin..even Rajeev Khandelwala ..Abhay Deol....Huma...Mahie Gill....I do not see them becoming huge stars or anything...but they will have a very good place for themselves or their cinema.....people who have looks..and charishma and acting talent will always be the stars ...like SRK...Hrithik etc!!!

Damn....Rajeev Masand has given 4/5 for Matru Ki Bijilee Ka Mandola...I have never seen him rate any movie higher.....

'Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola' review: The year's first gem has arrived, don't miss it!

Cast: Imran Khan, Anushka Sharma
Director: Vishal Bhardwaj
If it's true - what director Vishal Bhardwaj would have us believe in that cheeky anti-smoking disclaimer that precedes Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola - that too much of anything, even water and lemon, is harmful, then the filmmaker evidently doesn't practice what he preaches. This outrageous comedy after all shows little concern for our health as it delivers laugh after side-splitting laugh.
matru9-dec29.jpg

Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola might well be described as Bhardwaj's holiday movie - a mad story with crazy characters - but fortunately for us, even in a light mood, the director can be counted on to say interesting things.
In a fictional village in Haryana, the wealthiest resident, Harry Mandola (Pankaj Kapur), has conspired with a cunning minister (Shabana Azmi) to usurp the poor villagers' farmlands so he can build an industrial plant. Harry has a drinking problem, but he's a better man when he's under the influence, sympathizing with the villagers' condition, even going so far as to lead a procession against himself one intoxicated night. His Man Friday, Hukum Singh Matru (Imran Khan), has been hired with the sole purpose of controlling Mandola's drinking habit, but that's easier said than done. Meanwhile, in an alliance that would benefit both sides, Mandola has gotten his motherless daughter Bijlee (Anushka Sharma) engaged to the politico's dimwit son (Arya Babbar).
From hallucinations about pink buffaloes to a potentially fatal drunken flight, the film's humor alternates skillfully between the inventive and the slapstick, seldom striking a false note. His tongue firmly in cheek, Bhardwaj also takes pointed jabs at the nexus between those in power and those with deep pockets, making a case for the oppressed rural population often stuck in between.
Not one to dumb down the material for a wider audience, the filmmaker throws in clever references like that brass band shop in the town square named Kusturica, or the savior of the downtrodden, named after a Communist icon. In other scenes Bhardwaj is more direct, like that one in which the scheming minister, while berating her no-good son, gives him the example of real political heirs who caused their parents little trouble.
Aided by an excellent music score packed with hummable gems, and working off a terrific, layered script, the director sketches his quirky characters lovingly, giving them soul so you form a sense of real attachment to them. The chemistry between Mandola and Matru is magnetic...witness that scene in which they decide to punish a well for standing in their way. Bijlee, for all her brashness, reveals real pathos simmering beneath the surface, particularly in her scenes with her father.
But it's not just the principals, Bhardwaj handles even side characters with great affection, giving them little moments to make an impression...like Matru's trusted eunuch friend, the blind boy sporting Aviators, and the local doctor's overweight wife who misunderstands Mandola's buffalo obsession.
If there's anything that feels contrived, it's a scene between Matru and an old college friend he taps for help, or the broad strokes with which the director caricatures Azmi's corrupt minister, although the actress herself gives a deliciously evil performance. The language and accents in the film feel unfamiliar, and take some getting used to. It's impossible to catch every joke and dialogue, which is a pity given that the writing is so rich.
Of the cast, Anushka Sharma is dependably feisty yet achingly vulnerable, breathing life into the conflicted Bijlee. Imran Khan, for his part, offers a solid, confident turn, owning the character of Matru completely, holding his own even while acting off a veteran like Pankaj Kapur.
The film, not surprisingly, belongs to Kapur, who never misses a beat as the paradoxical Mandola. It's wonderful how he's particularly lucid when he's drunk, making the most sense in this senseless state. But it's Arya Babbar who catches you completely off-guard with a delightful performance as the politico's daft son. Watch how he "gifts" his fiancée a Zulu dancing troupe, or even his late reactions to his mother's sinister brainwaves...the actor is the surprise packet in this charming film.
Returning to form after the disappointing Saat Khoon Maaf, Vishal Bhardwaj gives us a film that's enjoyable and relevant in equal measure. I'm going with four out of five for Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola. The year's first gem has arrived - don't miss it!
Rating: 4 / 5

Rest of the reviews from others have ranged from average to good...

Going to Watch it Tommarrow or the day after....

Actually bad timing :D...There is one Telugu movie releasing this weekend...and it is a big multistarrer family movie,..since my NRI brothers are suckers for traditional family movies with marriage..and family emotions ..dialogues about relationships......people where I live have events before the show..after the show....so I will be there....Mandola if possible this sunday or next sunday....
Trailer of the movie...you might recognize prakash raj

Matru Ki Bijilee Ka Mandola -- A Vishal Bhara.....errr...Pankaj Kapoor Film !!

The movie takes on a very serious subject of Land grabbing, Special Economic Zones, conditions of farmers...industrialists...politicians...but facades it as a Political Satire with eccentric Humor....at times over the top.

Pankaj Kapoor...Holy freaking Legend !!!!!!!!! Undoudtedly one of the finest performances I have ever seen in Hindi cinema....he just pulled of finest performance of his career by miles....As a ferocious industrialist when sober..and a vulnerable....hurt man when drunk ...I just wonder why he choose to be so selective in his movies unlike his fellow actors like Naseerudhin Shah, Paresh rawal and nana patekar!!!! Brilliant...Brilliant...holy effing brilliant...no words ...watch the genius at his best....

Shabana Azmi as a politician...that one scene where she describes what is wrong with india post independence was a pro at work....I wish we got to know more about her character....

Anushka Sharma pulls of her role with ease...the fact that she manages to hold our attention when sharing the screen with Pankaj kapoor is a testimony to her acting....

Imran Khan.....you cannot help but feel sorry for the guy....just seems so out of place with such talents around him. Guy has definately tried as much as he can..and at times pulls of the scenes very well...however you can see his struggle with the haryani dialect...close ups with require strong emotions...I wish somebody like Irfan Khan was given this character....

Arya Babbar was a delight as a dumb son ...

Vishal Bharadwaj the director stumbles at a few places ...he looses track of the main plot in the movie..and goes overboard at a few places. The whole plane sequences was long and over the top!!! First half hour struggles at have your attention......Using Pink Buffalo as a hallucination was typical Vishal at work...eccentric..over the top..and genius !!!! Fact that he does not spoon feed the audience may actually go against him the the box office.....The number of hidden satires is huge....right from the small names of the streets...names of the characters.....gestures....One of the finest piece of writing in recent times...I am sure you will find new things each time you see the movie...if only the screenplay was as good for a second viewing.....

Personally...Vishal's Finest work after his Shakespeare Adoptations(Maqbool and Omkara )..

Do not believe the dumbass review of Taran Adarsh and co who give 4 stars for Sajid Khan's housefull and 1.5 for this movie...

Watch it....It is nice to see ratings in IMDB increasing...it was a pathetic 4.8 yesterday..it had climbed to 6.6 now...will probably end at 8/10

My Rating: 8/10 ...Recommended!!!

This might be the first time as far as I can remember where Bollywood's hardest critics...Rajeev Masand and Rajasen have given 4/5 (who usually never cross 3 )..where as usually incredibly linient reviwers like Taran adarsh..and zee..who give son of sardar a 4/5 ..have given Matru...1 or 2 !!!

Loved Rajasen's Review..

Review: Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola is absurdly great
Raja Sen feels Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola has enough substance to warrant repeated viewings.

Without warning, there is an accident.

Then, a flashback: to ten minutes earlier. A flashback which explains, nearly in realtime, how the accident comes to be. Why, then, did we not directly start from the flashback? Because Vishal said so.

Vishal Bhardwaj's [ Images ] latest film delights in its own impish, impromptu absurdity. There is much daftness in this oddly titled Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola, a cock-and-pink-buffalo story that stays surreal even at its most satirical.

It's theatrical, insightful, wickedly clever and, often, too funny to even laugh at, if you know what I mean. It is also, as may be apparent, an utterly random movie, sometimes jarringly uneven and frequently meandering. And yet it works, because it is, at every single step, unexpected and surprising.

Even the most seemingly slapdash of scenes appears magical when the work of a master is evident. This film swings with two sultans, each spurring the other on toward a sillier spectacle, a sight of grand lunacy.

Bhardwaj more than handles his end -- heaping on wordplay and quirk and texture -- but the Quixote in the other corner is even wilder: Pankaj Kapur, who carries the film with smiles and slurs. Together, this jesting juggalbandi provides a rare treat: a legendary actor rolling up his sleeves and a director giving him miles of room in which to conjure. Forget Matru and Bijlee, in Mandola lies the magic.

Technically, though, the whole film lies in Mandola. It's set in a fictive Haryana village of the same name, a name it shares with its only wealthy resident, a land-hungry tyrant played by Kapur.

And while he squeezes farmers dry by day, a few stiff drinks invariably bring out his inner socialist: it's a regular Dr Jekyll and Comrade Hyde. A drunken Mandola even leads the oppressed masses to revolt against himself, but isn't at all amused once he regains his wits.

It is a peculiar universe populated by many a weirdo, and akes a while to settle in. One on hand is Mandola's canny driver, Matru, (Imran Khan [ Images ]) who indulgently leads his master toward drink, clearly fond of the sloshed socialist within. On the other is Bijli, (Anushka Sharma [ Images ]) the tyrant's daughter, an over-kohl'd drama queen eager enough to marry into money.

There are farmers hunting for Mao to guide them, and sycophantic policemen who collude gladly with a scheming politician (Shabana Azmi [ Images ]). And being set in the laconic state of Haryana, the humour is dryer and flatter than usually seen in a farce: the laughs may not come easy, but it's hard not to keep grinning.

But it's not all snorts and chortles. Behind the beguiling buffoonery and unrestrained slapstick lie deeper points, about how barren fields can be more profitable than lush ones, about how politicos justify self-interest by hailing it as another form of altruism, about the way even rain can be co-opted as a farmer's greatest foe.

Why, in one unforgettable moment, glasses are raised and, instead of the often-mispronounced 'chairs' for 'cheers,' the politician raises her drink with a cry for actual seats of power. 'Kursiyaan!'

There is much this film says, about Special Economic Zones and the development myth, and with that subject it -- with a diametrically different approach -- treads on some ground covered by last year's finest film. When the most important filmmakers of our time concentrate on the same issues, we should be paying attention, too.

We must also heed the language, for there is no Indian filmmaker who uses words as deliberately, pointedly and skilfully as Bhardwaj.

An accidental revolutionary, when jeered at, snaps back "ghar mein Mao-Lenin naa hai ke?" instead of bringing up mothers and sisters. Mandola's profanity sounds coarse but is technically innocent, his most colourful bit of cussing --"uski toh Ma ka papad sadega" -- merely sounding dirty.

And in one exceptional scene, when Mandola evocatively outlines his vision of farms turning into shopping malls, he kicks things off with brutal lyricism, by saying this dream has been clawing at the back of his eyelids.

There is much detail to cherish, crammed lovingly between the lines. The flighty Bijli, unsure of herself -- alternating one minute and direct the next, if I may -- is told she has cobwebs inside her. Her father, meanwhile, is a feudal oppressor with his greatest weakness inside him, his moat literally inside his castle.

Fateful rain comes from the sky soon after people from an African tribe dance exuberantly around a fire, perhaps inadvertently willing it. And a father shoves his errant daughter ahead of him, as if making her walk the plank.

Bhardwaj's influence is clear, and, as always, saluted. The brass band in the film is called the Kusturi-ca Brass Band, and while the Serbian master Emir Kusturica is known for his chimerical surrealism, Matru appears simpler and less fluid, perhaps due to its need to adhere to a familiar dramatic narrative.

In that Bhardwaj's film appears closer to one of the loonier Coen Brothers films, or even, ah yes, a PG Wodehouse plot by way of Jim Jarmusch. It would be depressingly bleak if it wasn't as spontaneously fun.

Imran isn't ideal but looks the part and manages to get by, and Anushka -- while stumbling on some of the stranger lines -- is great in a couple of scenes near the climax. Arya Babbar, in a Reggie Mantle like clean-shaven idiot role, is pretty decent and Azmi's reliably good, especially when armed with a scary soliloquy.

But make no mistake, this is a one-actor show, giving the greatest thespian in our country another delightfully odd space. Pankaj Kapur is the best we've had, and -- as he hallucinates, as he rouses the people, as he steels himself -- this is all a reminder of that.

Even the way he gigglingly insists on giving a man who calls himself Mao the bottle with his Left hand.

Laced with both acid and arsenic, Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola isn't everyone's cup of tea. It takes a while to get into its groove, but changes gears with spectacular finesse after that.

And no matter the slight niggles: this is a film that goes far out on a limb, and gives us both bedlam and nuances, enough to warrant repeated viewings. And more than enough to love. Oh boy oh boy indeed.

Rating : 4/5

taran Adarash reviews

Karzzz - 4 / 5

At the box-office, the film should fetch a thunderous start and in due course, should be amongst the biggest achievers of the year in terms of business. Reincarnation themes have a super-successful track record, right from KARZ to KARAN ARJUN to OM SHANTI OM. Now add KARZZZZ to this list. Damn the pseudo critics who even rubbished KARZ three decades ago. Go by your instinct and have a blast!

Black - 2 / 5

But Bhansali is letdown, and terribly at that, by the screenplay department. The screenplay does not offer much in the post-interval portions. In fact, the story takes its own time to unfold in this half. Also, the interaction between Amitabh and Rani gets cyclic and monotonous after a point.

Dev D - 1 / 5

There's no harm if you pick up an enticing story and tell it your way, but Kashyap goes a bit too far, crosses all limits and tends to get abstract once again. And that's the reason for DEV D's downfall. Watching DEV D is akin to doing atyachaar on oneself! On the whole, DEV D is NO SMOKING II. Does one elaborate more?

You try too hard to sound intelligent and different mate...a lot of times over doing ..just my opinion !!!!
