Deshpande turned out to be an impact player for the opposition🤦*♂️

A familiar story for Gujarat Titans, in so many ways as they start their title defence on a winning note.

Earlier in the day, Ruturaj Gaikwad played a classy innings to get everyone excited about the IPL. He fell eight short of a hundred, but his efforts helped CSK post 178 for the first innings.

In reply, Gujarat got off to a flier as the first ever impact substitute Tushar Deshpande was shown the roof by Wriddhi Saha. His cameo ended within the powerplay, but that set the tone for the innings.

Shubman Gill took on the role of the anchor, and played a few expansive shots here and there, as the rest accelarated. GT got handy contributions from their impact substitute Sai Sudharshan - who came on for an injured Williamson, and Vijay Shankar.

They lost two quick wickets at the death as CSK's debutant Hangargekar impressed with a three-fer, but who else but Rahul Tewatia to seal the game with his trademark finishing cameo? And not to forget that six and four from Rashid Khan who continues to be a thorn with the bat as well

Watched an IPL match after 7 years. Nothing has changed. It's all the same, high quality batting, club level bowling, big crowd, lots of music & dancing.

Does a bowling attack consisting of Shami, Joseph, Santner, Rashid, Jadeja, and Josh Little seem like a club-level bowlers to you? Worlds best bowlers from major cricket teams except Pakistan are playing in the IPL. Even so called great Pakistani PSL bowlers will be taken to the cleaners by the quality batsmen.

Kane Williamson has been ruled out of the IPL 2023, as per a report in Sports Tak. Williamson picked up an injury in IPL 2023 opening game against Chennai Super Kings. Williamson got himself in a tangle while trying to save a boundary during CSK's innings.

Punjab Kings vs Kolkata Knight Riders, 2nd Match

Kolkata Knight Riders have won the toss and have opted to field

Teams:
Punjab Kings (Playing XI): Shikhar Dhawan(c), Prabhsimran Singh(w), Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Jitesh Sharma, Shahrukh Khan, Sam Curran, Sikandar Raza, Nathan Ellis, Harpreet Brar, Rahul Chahar, Arshdeep Singh
Kolkata Knight Riders (Playing XI): Rahmanullah Gurbaz(w), Mandeep Singh, Nitish Rana(c), Rinku Singh, Andre Russell, Shardul Thakur, Sunil Narine, Tim Southee, Anukul Roy, Umesh Yadav, Varun Chakaravarthy

Crazy start but Southee ends Prabhsimran 's 23(12) innings

Good strike rate but ...

Both the teams playing today look surprisingly bad squad-wise. Is there a reason for that?

Why do you say that?

Andre Russell is the most known player playing in today's match. I expected there to be more world-class players given the hype but maybe it's just these two teams that are light on elite players.

Excellent pship at the moment between Rajapaksa and Dhawan.. 77(49)

Legendary India cricketer Sunil Gavaskar feels that the Indian Premier League teams will take some to ace the new Impact Player Rule which has been implemented in the cash-rich league from this season itself. Chennai Super Kings made the first use of the Impact Player rule on Friday in the season opener against Gujarat Titans as Tushar Deshpande replaced Ambati Rayudu after the first innings. However, it didn’t work out well for CSK as Deshpande leaked 51 runs in his 3.2 overs and claimed just one wicket.

Gujarat Titans also used the special rule but it was more of a forced call for them as Sai Sudarshan replaced the injured Kane Williamson and he came out to bat at number 3. Sudharshan scored 22 runs in his 17-ball stay in the middle. Williamson injured his knee while fielding and unfortunately he has been ruled out of the tournament.

Deshpande was among the five substitute players named by CSK after the toss. The others were Subhranshu Senapati, Shaik Rasheed, Ajinkya Rahane and Nishant Sindhu.

On the other hand, Gujarat Titans had named Jayant Yadav, Mohit Sharma, Abhinav Manohar, K.S. Bharat besides B. Sai Sudharsan as their substitutes.

The Impact Player rule is implemented for the first time in this year’s edition of the tournament after the Board for Cricket Control in India (BCCI) tested it out during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy tournament.

While teams in IPL are taking nascent steps on how to ace it, the experts, meanwhile, have given thumbs up to the ‘Impact Player’.

“You need some time to understand new rules and acclimatise with new playing conditions. The same will be the case with all ten teams in the TATA IPL 2023. They will need some time to ace it,” Gavaskar told Star Sports.

Former India cricketer Harbhajan Singh, meanwhile, lauded the think tank in IPL for coming up with this innovative rule.

“It’s a very innovative move as you can now replace a player whom you feel is not suitable or has served his purpose with someone who can make an impact in the current playing conditions. So, kudos to BCCI, it’s a very good rule,” he added.

IN: Venkatesh Iyer
OUT: Varun Chakaravarthy

One of the worst games in IPL I have seen. What a poor team KKR is...why have they hold back Russell for so long? Batting Rinku Singh, Venky Iyer etc before him is just

Lucknow Super Giants vs Delhi Capitals, 3rd Match

Delhi Capitals have won the toss and have opted to field

Teams:

Lucknow Super Giants (Playing XI): KL Rahul(c), Kyle Mayers, Marcus Stoinis, Deepak Hooda, Krunal Pandya, Nicholas Pooran(w), Ayush Badoni, Mark Wood, Jaydev Unadkat, Ravi Bishnoi, Avesh Khan

Delhi Capitals (Playing XI): David Warner(c), Prithvi Shaw, Mitchell Marsh, Rilee Rossouw, Sarfaraz Khan(w), Rovman Powell, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Chetan Sakariya, Khaleel Ahmed, Mukesh Kumar

19:17 Local Time, 13:47 GMT, 19:17 IST: They are playing on in the rain. And now they are calling for the covers. KKR are behind on DLS par by 7 runs. Three big covers come to cover the square and the outfield. If we don't get back on, that's the game and PBKS will win.

Except for 2-3 teams every team in IPL seems to be wearing the same blue colour jersey. Pathetic. Learn a thing or two from. BBLs jerseys, every team has a refreshingly different colour.

PBKS 191/5 (20)

KKR 146/7 (16)

Punjab Kings won by 7 runs (DLS method)

India's fast bowling resources are in massive crisis. This is the 3rd IPL game and not a single decent seamer on show yet. I fear what will happen to Indian side once Bumrah and Shami retires

That drop by Khaleel will prove very costly. Kyle Myers now taking on the bowlers

PBKS 191/5 (20)

KKR 146/7 (16)

Punjab Kings won by 7 runs (DLS method)

Top knocks from Bhanuka Rajapaksa and Shikhar Dhawan, followed by a three-wicket haul Arshdeep Singh guided Punjab Kings to a win by seven runs (DLS method) in a rain-curtailed match of IPL 2023 on Saturday.

Asked to bat first, PBKS posted a whopping total of 191/5 in 20 overs after Rajapaksa smashed 50 while Dhawan scored 40. For KKR, Tim Southee scalped two wickets while Varun Chakaravarthy, Sunil Narine, and Umesh Yadav scalped one wicket each.

Later, PBKS dominated KKR as they removed early wickets before Andre Russell and Venkatesh Iyer brought some momentum in the game.

However, the duo departed after scoring 35 and 34, respectively. Later, rain played a spoilsport in the game as the match had to be called-off and PBKS were declared as the winners by 7 runs due to the DLS method.

Crowd seems low for the day night LSG vs DC game. Any reason why? I was expecting a filled out stadium

Bowlers like Sakariya can instantly remove your interest from cricket, he is that bad.

Anyone remember Supersub back in 50 over game a couple of decades ago so nothing new

That was different, in super sub you had to nominate only one player before the toss. Here you have more options.

But these gimicks are not good.

Question for the Indians on the forum...seeing lots of Indian players with tats and diamond ear studs...is this a cultural thing or are they emulating the West?

Prithvi Shaw has really declined. A few years ago he was heralded as the next big thing for Indian batting but he has fallen way down the pecking order. I wonder if the big IPL money takes away the hunger and incentive to work hard at their game down the line.

Rap culture. Its cool to wear expensive watches and Jewelry.

What a dismissal! Bouncer from Woods....Sarfaraz somehow manages to get a touch to redirect it but straight to a fielder!

One of the worst games in IPL I have seen. What a poor team KKR is...why have they hold back Russell for so long? Batting Rinku Singh, Venky Iyer etc before him is just
Coz too many overs left, Russell often fails when there's too many balls left..

Wood is unplayable on this pitch. He is jagging the ball right back into the right handers. No time to react after the ball kissing the grass and nipping back.

Isn't he the young bowler with a Junaid Khan type run up. Was hyped for a while thought he'd be good

Happy to see that Pakistanis aren't the only ones struggling to play wood

David Warner is horribly past it now. He is surviving purely on reputation now in both international and franchise cricket.

5 for 14 from 4 overs

WOOD should be man of the match. Exceptional fast bowling skills on display.

That's a pretty comprehensive win for Lucknow Super Giants and they've opened their season in style. The LSG players haven't disappointed the thousands of fans present at their home venue.

Their batters set the tone by posting a massive total, and the bowlers have made sure to complement that with a wily performance.

Mayers who was dropped by Khaleel made sure that Capitals paid for their mistake. He scored a brisk fifty following the powerplay, and Pooran too chipped in with a handy cameo as the Giants finished with a massive total of 193/6.

In reply, the Capitals got off to a brisk start, but Mark Wood came into the attack and completely derailed DC's innings. He knocked over Shaw and Marsh with jaffas on back-to-back deliveries, and the Capitals could never recover from those blows.

The spinners built further pressure, and although there was a handy partnership between Warner and Rossouw, the required run rate had inflated so much, that there was no chance of a comeback. In short, it was a clinical performance by the Lucknow boys

This is the first time i am watching the IPL properly since 2009 because i want to study and assess the differences with the PSL. Biggest difference is the creme top players and ex players involved in the IPL i.e Ricky Ponting, Jonty Rhodes e.t.c. No wonder the league got a broadcast deal of $6 billion for the next 5 years.

You may also have noted that Saudi is sponsoring some bits of IPL also. Shame that our people cannot get the same sponsorship

It will take some while for the PCB and Pakistan to get there.

I am sorry but the number of visits Shehbaz Sharif has made to KSA and the way they got money for loans from them, the least they could have done is to ask for some investment Pakistan's flagship product.

Yes Saudi Gov - big thing but also means they are paying money

Last year it was Dubai something.

Qatar is sponsoring RCB.

Sponsorship is all about RoI.

Btw, what's their to visit in Saudi if i am a non muslim and not going for hajj or Umrah.

Indians visit UAE a lot. Tourism money might run into millions and billions. Perhaps Saudis also want people from India visit there.

I would think it’s up to the franchises to obtain sponsorships. At the end of the day there’s nothing in it for Saudi or UAE or others to sponsor psl teams because the purchasing power of Pakistanis is zilch.

If we can beg for loans, we can beg for this. Visit Saudi is a Gov initiative.

Even a token gesture could have helped - just another source of sponsorship.

The prize amount can vary based upon the economy so IPL one would be higher.

Visit Saudi.

Seems like promotion of Saudi as a tourist place.

Indians visit UAE a lot. Tourism money might run into millions and billions. Perhaps Saudis also want people from India visit there.

That's not a problem and should be encouraged.

Saudi is amazing for tourism - lots of natural beauty - have a look at their website

IPL ain't fun anymore. Just an odd overseas pacer producing an odd memorable spell here and there but aside of that nothing much really.

RR and SRH( once the South Africans back) have exciting teams though.

Where are the likes of Tyagi and Kuldeep Sen? These two guys bowl 140+, don't they?

Now Umran Malik, fastest bowler in the world is bowling. So there is a bit of pace for you...enjoy :steyn

Are bowling speeds being shown?

Can you add some for Umran in his thread, please.
