David Miller is a more experienced T20 player than Jos Buttler, but Buttler has a longer CV as a captain. Might details like that matter in the hurly-burly of the three-match T20I series between England and South Africa that starts in Bristol on Wednesday?

Perhaps. Or perhaps not. Miller summed up the uncertainty during a press conference on Tuesday: "As captain you can't control everything. It's about having trust in the players, which I do have."

Miller has played 382 T20s - 100 of them internationals; 97 for South Africa, the other three for an ICC World XI against Pakistan in Lahore in September 2017 - to Buttler's 319, including 91 for England. Buttler has led teams in 38 games, among them 23 white-ball internationals. Miller's leadership credentials amount to 14 matches. His only time at the helm of South Africa's senior side was in two T20Is against Pakistan in February 2019.

Buttler, England's appointed white-ball captain, has presided over the five losses his team have suffered in eight completed matches in the two formats this month. He is thus under scrutiny to turn things around. Miller is standing in for the injured Temba Bavuma, and so is under less pressure to succeed as skipper.

While Buttler would have liked to have Ben Stokes around - the allrounder is being rested for the series - Miller will welcome back Kagiso Rabada from his break for the ODI rubber, along with Rilee Rossouw, the former Kolpakian who is likely to play his first match for South Africa since October 2016.

South Africa have played 139 international matches of all descriptions on 14 different grounds on their 22 trips to England since their first visit in 1907. But they have never played an international in Bristol. By Friday next week, they should have played three - their two T20Is against Ireland next are also scheduled for WG Grace's home ground.

England and South Africa will play the second match of their series in Cardiff on Thursday, just 41 kilometres away from Bristol, with the third game in Southampton on Sunday.

The teams last met in the format at the World Cup in Sharjah in November. South Africa won by 10 runs, inflicting England's only loss in their five group matches. This series will be important preparation for the next edition of the global showpiece in Australia in October and November.

With England currently ranked second and South Africa fourth, high octane cricket can be expected.

When: July 27, 2022; 6.30pm Local Time

Where: County Ground, Bristol

What to expect: A dry day/night. Bristol's boundaries are on the short side both straight and square of the pitch, which tends to be slow but sound.

Jonny Bairstow's devastating 90 helped England beat South Africa by 41 runs in a breathless, high-scoring first Twenty20 international in Bristol.

Continuing his stunning Test form, Bairstow bullied the Proteas' bowlers throughout his 53-ball assault as England racked up 234-6 - their second highest T20 score.

Bairstow added 106 with Moeen Ali, who smacked 52 from 18 balls, in a riotous fourth-wicket stand lasting just 37 balls, as one over went for 33 runs.

In total, England hit 20 sixes, the most they have ever hit in a T20 game, while Moeen's 16-ball fifty was the fastest by an England player.

The pair heaped misery on a ragged South Africa side, who dropped Bairstow four times in a fielding performance that bordered on comical.

Despite losing both Quinton de Kock and Rilee Rossouw in the second over, the visitors threatened to pull off what would have been their record chase as 21-year-old Tristan Stubbs smashed an astonishing 72 from 28 balls.

But Chris Jordan bowled a nerveless 18th over and, with 51 needed from the final two, Stubbs was caught at long-off from the bowling of Richard Gleeson.

The Lancashire seamer took two further wickets in the over and South Africa ended on 193-8.

The second match of the three-match series takes place on Thursday in Cardiff as both sides build towards the T20 World Cup in the autumn.

Runs flow in Bristol as records fall for England during T20I triumph

A host of records were broken as England registered an impressive 41-run victory over South Africa in a high-scoring encounter in Bristol.

South Africa were left to rue dropping Jonny Bairstow on three occasions as the in-form batter smashed a career best score of 90 to lead the hosts to an impressive score of 234/6 in Bristol.

It was England's second-biggest score in Men's T20 cricket, with veteran all-rounder Moeen Ali putting the finishing touches on an excellent performance with the bat by scoring a quickfire 52 from just 18 deliveries.

Moeen's knock was England's fastest T20I fifty of all time, with the left-hander smashing six maximums during his innings while combining with Bairstow for a 106-run stand through the middle overs.

England also combined to hit 18 sixes during their innings, which was a new record for Matthew Mott's side.

Impressive Stubbs shows promising signs

South Africa were going to need everything to go right for them if they were to chase down England's lofty score and half centuries to Tristan Stubbs (72) and Reeza Hendricks (57) kept them in the contest for much of the chase.

Stubbs in particular stood out in what was his third T20I match and first innings, with the 21-year-old hitting eight sixes during a 28-ball stay that showed he's a player of immense talent and one to watch in the future.

Stubbs was eventually dismissed on the first ball of the penultimate over, putting an end to the Proteas' hopes after an entertaining cameo.

Jordan comes through with the goods in the clutch

Chris Jordan might not receive the plaudits that some of his teammates receive, but the veteran pacer remains a key component of England's T20I setup and once again showed his wares in the final overs of South Africa's chase.

The visitors were still in the game when they needed 54 from the final 18 deliveries, but Jordan found a bit of swing and nailed his yorker with ease to concede just seven runs in total from his final two overs to seal the deal for his side.

While Jordan went wicketless from his four overs, he conceded just 30 runs from his spell and came through with the good when the game was there to be won.
