So no return for Bairstow, and Stokes and Moeen swap places in the same team as for the first test.

Thoughts?

Bairstow has been poor in tests for a while. If at all, I would have him in the team instead of Leach. Moeen and Rasheed will be the spinners.

Sri Lanka vs England | 2nd Test | Pallekele | Nov 14-18, 2018 | Match Thread

England were by far the better side in the first Test, but Sri Lanka, usually solid at home, will back themselves to level the three-Test series in Pallekele.

Overview
Sri Lanka v England
2nd Test
Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, Pallekele
Wednesday, 14 November, 10:00am local time, 04:30am GMT

The first Test was also Rangana Herath’s international farewell, and it didn’t go too well for the champion left-arm spinner or his team. Herath picked up just three wickets in two innings, and Sri Lanka went down by 211 runs after folding for 203 and 250.

They need a lift now. Unfortunately for them, they will have to do it without the services – and leadership – of Dinesh Chandimal, who will be out for around two weeks because of a grade one muscle tear in his groin.

In his place, the Sri Lankans have Charith Asalanka, the promising 21-year-old batting all-rounder with no international experience.

Whether Asanka gets into the XI remains to be seen, but Suranga Lakmal will definitely be leading the team out in Chandimal’s absence, and he will hope to build on his incredible captaincy record – Sri Lanka have won all three Tests Lakmal has captained them in, twice at home against South Africa and once away in Barbados.

One of the other constants for Sri Lanka in those two Tests against South Africa – in July 2018 – was Dimuth Karunaratne. He was Player of the Match in both games after hitting 53 and 85, and 158* and 60.

More of that is something Lakmal, and Sri Lanka, will hope for from their star Test opener. Karunaratne didn’t have a good time in Galle, but he must lead the Sri Lankan revival with the bat, along with the likes of Kaushal Silva, Kusal Mendis, Angelo Mathews, and others.

From England’s point of view, most boxes were ticked in Galle. They countered the threat of Herath and the rest of the Sri Lankan spinners with some excellent application. It could have gone away from them in the first innings, but debutant Ben Foakes shone bright with a 107, and Keaton Jennings took centre stage the second time with an unbeaten 146.

More importantly, their spin trio of Moeen Ali, Adil Rashid and Jack Leach picked up eight wickets in each Sri Lankan innings – that’s a big reason for confidence for the visitors and something to be wary of for the home team.

Key players

Dilruwan Perera (Sri Lanka): Herath came into his own after Muttiah Muralitharan’s retirement, and now it’s the turn of Perera as well as the other Lankan spinners to come to the fore, emerge from the shadows, so to say. Perera picked up seven wickets in Galle, and he might be the man to lead the attack in Pallekele.

Moeen Ali (England): He got 4/46 and 4/71 in Galle, and though he didn’t do much up at No.3 with the bat, Ali is exactly the sort of performer who can make a difference, especially in conditions of the sort in Sri Lanka. Expect more from him – wickets, and runs too.

Conditions

Rain had been forecast in Galle, but it stayed away. It’s the same in Pallekeke, and the hope will be that it remains dry. On the pitch, it should be typically Sri Lankan. Runs for the batsmen, and lots of turn for the spinners.

Squads

Sri Lanka:
Suranga Lakmal (c), Akila Dananjaya, Charith Asalanka, Dhananjaya de Silva, Niroshan Dickwella (wk), Dimuth Karunaratne, Lahiru Kumara, Angelo Mathews, Kusal Mendis, Dilruwan Perera, Malinda Pushpakumara, Kasun Rajitha, Lakshan Sandakan, Roshen Silva, Kaushal Silva

England: Joe Root (c), Moeen Ali, James Anderson, Jonny Bairstow, Stuart Broad, Rory Burns, Jos Buttler, Sam Curran, Joe Denly, Ben Foakes (wk), Keaton Jennings, Jack Leach, Ollie Pope, Adil Rashid, Ben Stokes, Olly Stone, Chris Woakes

Stokes to bat No.3 for England

England captain Joe Root says Ben Stokes is eager to shoulder the "added responsibility" of batting in the problem position of No.3 in the second Test against Sri Lanka.

The tourists will field an unchanged XI at Pallekele Stadium on Wednesday following their resounding victory in Galle, leaving out the fit-again Jonny Bairstow and promoting their star allrounder to arguably the most crucial spot in the order.

Root, the team's best batsman, vacated the No.3 role in the summer and Moeen Ali's double failure in the previous Test has forced another rethink.

"Ben's game is in good shape and he is more than capable of batting at three. He is relishing the added responsibility of doing a job at three," said Root.

"Ben's technique is sound and he will be able to adapt to this role."

The talk of responsibility is pertinent given Stokes lost the vice-captaincy last year, in the aftermath of the Bristol street fight that saw him miss the Ashes and ultimately be acquitted on a charge of affray.

Despite surrendering the formal leadership role, he has never relinquished his influential status in the group and will not shrink from the challenge that comes with his elevation.

He has played 64 of his 85 Test knocks as a No.6 but will now have the opportunity to define the innings rather than rescue or polish it.

England are mindful of over-working their allrounders, and last week pencilled Jos Buttler in to swap with Moeen if the spinner was tired from his efforts with the ball.

Buttler could play a similar safety net role for Stokes, though it seems unlikely his headstrong nature or seemingly endless reserves of energy would allow for that.

"We are in a fortunate position that many in the side could bat in that position. If we feel that he has done a tremendous workload with the ball, then we can adapt and alter the order if it's necessary, but I don't expect that to happen," explained Root.

"Ben is one of the fittest guys in the side, so the intensity of batting in the top order and bowling as one of our three seamers, will not faze him."

Root also opened up on breaking the bad news to teammate Bairstow.

He arrived on this trip inked into the side as first-choice wicketkeeper-batsman only for an ankle injury suffered while playing football during the one-day series to rule him out of the first Test.

His replacement Ben Foakes, originally called up as cover, went on to enjoy what Buttler dubbed "the best debut ever", making himself effectively undroppable with a composed century and a fine outing with the gloves.

"Jonny understands the situation and is aware that we have to pick the side that are best suited to conditions we can expect in Kandy," said Root.

"He is an integral part of our plans and his experience around the group is important."

ENG has survived quite few close calls & now in dominating position - need 250 here. I believe this track is going to explode from 2nd session!!!!! - quick runs are key here.

2-0 to ENG, and this is 1st hour of Day 1!!!!

So if ball banana swings from first over in ENGLAND ,none points out..but if it spins in sub continent ,eyebrows will be raised

Although I don't mind seeing the ball spinning from day 1. Swing happens because of the overhead conditions not the pitch conditions.

SRL has to do something against sweep - 5 lefties against 2 off spinners & 2 right handers against Malinda are going out of trouble through sweeping.

What else do you expect the ball to do in England?

Whereas you expect a Bunsen in SL.

Is Sri lanka this bad now or England really strong?
This SRL won against us in UAE and whitewashed Australia, beat SA

Tense times for England on Day 1 of the 2nd Test vs Sri Lanka as they reach 120/4 * (30 ov) at Lunch; Burns, Jennings, Stokes and Root the batsmen back in the pavilion with Lakmal, Perera, Pushpakumara and Dananjaya taking one wicket apiece

Awful shot from Moeen to trap himself leg before, the commentators seemed very confident it was drifting down but I knew it was out, good review from Sri Lanka.

Looks increasingly likely that Bairstow will have to bite the bullet and concentrate on his batting. I have already seen a few journalists state that Bairstow has been treated insensitively, but that's sport. Root, Bayliss, and Smith need to look out for the best interests of the team.

It was evident since the thrashing in Australia last winter that England needed more from Bairstow the batsman. His strop during the summer when asked to relinquish the gloves was utterly unprofessional, but he needs to buckle down and realize that he has to bat in the top 4 or risk being out of the side for a long time.

Quality innings from Buttler, if England get to 200 - with their 3 semi-decent spinners to bowl at Sri Lanka on a tricky pitch - then it might just be enough to stay in the game.

If lower order can get some runs, it will help England over a longer course. England should look to get to 250.

I may be wrong but with Cook's retirement, I have seen better performance from both young openers, not sure if that has got to do anything with a newer partner on other end.

A middle order of Root, Bairstow, Buttler and Stokes will be fantastic to say the least. Following them will be Foakes, Curran and the rest.

Cook was mediocre for a long time anyway, he will not be missed as a batsman currently. Better give opportunity to the younger ones.

I think this is a straight shootout..and could be over in three days if lanka dont bat well..it will take a good innings from one batsman to put pressure on either team..

What's happening to Root?

He's batting like a Pakistani these days

He can still improve, however the fabulous 4 term was making big expectations out of him. Root never had a great series outside England in tests. Still a great batsman, but not ATG material.

It doesn't really help for a youngster when you have got a senior player alongside you not performing in 90% of matches. I think England might see good competition between openers for the top slots.

Same is the case with Dhoni's presence in the middle order for India in LO. It just doesn't help the younger players to develop themselves and establish themselves in international arena.

Jos Buttler’s counter-attacking 63 and Sam Curran’s explosive 64 helped England to a first innings total of 285 on day one of the second Test against Sri Lanka in Kandy. Sri Lanka finished on 26/1 at the close of play.

Joe Root won the toss and elected to bat, but the visitors were dealt an early blow when Keaton Jennings, who starred in Galle with his second Test hundred, edged behind for 1 off the bowling of Suranga Lakmal.

Ben Stokes’ promotion to three in England’s batting line-up did not amount to much, as he was trapped on his crease by the wily off-spin of Dilruwan Perera. Root followed soon after, bowled through the gate by Malinda Pushpakumara. Buttler arrived at the crease intent on upping the ante, employing the sweep and reverse sweep to good effect.

He struggled to find support from elsewhere with Rory Burns the only other frontline batsman to go past 20. The Surrey opener survived for 81 balls, battling to 43 before edging to slip from an Akila Dananjaya delivery. Buttler negated the threat provided by Sri Lanka’s spinners on a turning wicket with aggression, hitting seven boundaries during his 67-ball stay at the crease.

After Buttler departed, Sam Curran took responsibility for England’s innings, helping his side get to tea with the score 212/7, ably supported by Adil Rashid. Rashid departed after the break for 31, and Jack Leach followed soon after, falling to a sharply turning off-break from Dananjaya.

With James Anderson in support, Curran decided to launch some hefty blows on the Sri Lankan bowling attack, frustrating them with some stunning drives down the ground. The young all-rounder decided to take the aerial route, hitting six sixes, with one of those shots taking him to his third Test half-century. Each of those innings has seen him reach the fifty landmark with a six.

Curran eventually departed after he holed out to Dimuth Karunaratne at long-off from the bowling of Perera. Perera was the pick of the Sri Lankan bowlers, finishing with 4/61.

Karunaratne and Kaushal Silva began the Sri Lankan innings against the pace of Anderson and Curran, but the spin of Jack Leach and Moeen Ali entered the attack quickly.

Leach had Silva bowled, rattling the top of off stump with a magical delivery which turned past the outside edge. Pushpakumara joined Karunaratne at the crease, as they took Sri Lanka to stumps without losing any more wickets.

Amazing to get to 285 in these conditions. This Sam Curran kid is some player.

England might just run riot tomorrow and take a giant step towards winning the series. Leach is flying at the moment, bowling brilliantly.

Pleasantly suprised at how well England are playing in Sri Lanka, they have got the tactics spot on. In the past England became timid against spin esp in the first session but it seems they have decided to be very positive and not wait for the unplayable delivery to send them packing.

Curran what a find :bumble

Would be a fantastic series win by England if they do it.

Think it is their next away series win after 2016 SA series win.

Root maybe struggling as a batsmen but I don't think he is doing a bad job as captain. Even Breeley wouldn't have won the ashes with that squad last winter. Young players seem to be doing well under his watch. He isn't afraid of trying things. Just needs to find a way to improve his own performance.

Curran has put England slightly ahead here. First session tomorrow is key.

Lankan batting lineup is too dependent on Karunaratne at this point. Minnow batting lineup without this guy

Brears would have fought the ECB and got a couple of quicks on the plane instead of all medium pacers.

Really didn’t help to lose Stokes, though. He would have done well on their wickets.

It doesn’t help Root that he his constantly coming in at 20-2 but captaincy is quite clearly affecting his batting as it does to most Englishmen. I would give the captaincy to Buttler and unencumber Root.

Sri Lanka reach 244/7 * (77.5 ov) at Tea on Day 2 of the 2nd Test, still trailing England by 41 runs; The homeside desperate to reduce deficit to a manageable level and ideally take a significant lead; ARS Silva is 46* whilst Leach and Rashid have taken 2 wickets each

Still don't think it would have made a difference as Australia are better in those conditions.

I think he is just going through a rough patch, he will come good. I love Buttler, but captaincy could affect his game.

Have to say wonderful fight back by SRL on this track, didn’t except. That last wicket partnership kept ENG in game otherwise a 100+ lead could he been decisive here.

And, from scorecard, I can see Karuna run out for 65, which changed the game otherwise SRL could have crossed 400 here - must have been drunk, otherwise your best batsman doesn’t get run out in Test match for a petty single.

I think, still ENG’s game to lose - but they need 250 to score in 2nd innings.

Half-centuries from three batsmen and resistance from the lower order saw Sri Lanka record a 46-run lead on day two of the second Test against England.

Nightwatchman Jack Leach, who went out to bat alongside Rory Burns, played out one over in England's second innings before the close of play.

Sri Lanka, who started the day at 26/1, posted a total of 336 after batting through almost the entirety of the second day. Opener Dimuth Karunaratne notched up a 125-ball 63 and middle-order batsman Dhananjaya de Silva supported him with 59 off 98 balls.

The best performance with the willow, though, came from Roshen Silva, who was the last Sri Lankan wicket to fall in the innings. He scored a splendid 85, batting smartly with the tail to take his team to a sizeable first-innings lead.

Roshen was resolute in his innings, facing 174 balls and adding 125 runs with the last three batsmen in his valuable effort. He came into the middle with Sri Lanka in trouble at 165/6, even as the England spin attack continued to wreak havoc on the dry surface.

All the wickets that fell on the day – barring the Karunaratne run-out – came from spin bowling. Jack Leach, the pick of the English bowlers, returned figures of 3/70 in his influential bowling effort, while Adil Rashid claimed three scalps for 75 runs in his 22-over spell.

Sri Lanka looked in a spot of bother at 31/2 in the morning session, when Malinda Pushpakumara fell to Moeen after adding just four runs to the total. However, Karunaratne and De Silva steadied the ship with their 96-run stand for the third wicket.

The momentum swung back in England's favour, however, when Karunaratne fell to a moment of brilliance in the field by Ben Stokes, who sprang from gully, picked up the ball at point, and threw down the stumps with only one to aim at. The visitors tightened their hold on the game by dismissing Kusal Mendis, De Silva and Angelo Mathews within the next 15 overs.

Just when it started to look like the hosts would have to accept a first-innings deficit, Roshen brought his A game. He stitched a 46-run stand with Niroshan Dickwella before the latter was dismissed by Joe Root in the 67th over. He then built formidable partnerships with the last three batsmen, denying England the chance to cap the innings on a high.

Dilruwan Perera, Akila Dananjaya and skipper Suranga Lakmal scored 15, 35, and 15 respectively, facing 106 deliveries between them as Roshen steered Sri Lanka to a first-innings lead.

Gah.... Sri Lanka in a bloody good position now.

England need to set them 200 to win as an absolute minimum, that will be a massive ask though.

England have regained the lead in quite comfortable fashion, shockingly.

Rory Burns looks a useful player.

Burns has been impressive. A shame he didn’t get to partner Cook.

Best all-rounder in the world. Next Botham in making.

Fails when matters.

Stokes?

He scored an important innings of 60 just in the previous Test, and in the previous innings when Sri Lanka were coasting he changed the dimension of the game, with an ingenious run out and then a quality slip catch for 2 quick wickets before lunch.

I agree that he played an extremely poor shot this morning but let’s not just punish his failures, let’s also praise his contributions.

Good progress for Sri Lanka as they have reduced England to 131/4 at Lunch on Day 3 of the 2nd Test; Burns (59) and Stokes (0) the latest wickets to fall, lead is 85 runs

Buttler to the rescue again! How many times has he saved England since his comeback earlier in the summer. Once again playing a gem of an innings.

Lankan spinners looking under a lot of pressure.

250 should be achievable considering that sam curran and adil rashid are in next. England favourites here.

High quality inning from skipper.

Johannesburg 2016
Pallekelle 2018

Root playing a complete blinderoo.

Might be the match winning hand.

He has got good starts in this series but let us not hype him for that. Doing a good job for his country but not anything extraordinary to keep praising him for 30s-40s.

What an amazing performance by Root. If England win, it could be the innings of the year.

England in a relatively strong position on Day 3 of the ongoing 2nd Test vs Sri Lanka as they reach Tea on 259/6 * (59 ov), with a lead of 213 runs; 3 wickets for Dananjaya, whilst Joe Root is on 98*

Target over 200, four wickets left. Curran in next. Brilliant test cricket.

Come on Rooty, come on Foakesy.

A magnificent century from the MOOAT! *

* Most Overrated of All Time. It even rhymes with Rooooooooot.

As I have stated numerous times, Kohli is the only better all-round batsman than Root in the game today. Yes he should be scoring more tons, but overrated? Lol.

Some people act as if he is in the class of batsmen like Azhar, Pujara, Rahane, Shafiq etc. He is a league above those players.

But does he have that gear in white ball cricket
