England v West Indies: Joe Denly left out of second Test

England have dropped batsman Joe Denly and rested pace bowlers James Anderson and Mark Wood for the second Test against West Indies.

All-rounder Sam Curran and uncapped Sussex fast bowler Ollie Robinson have been named in a 13-man squad.

Denly, 34, averages 29.53 in 15 matches, and was out for 18 and 29 in the first Test loss in Southampton.

Captain Joe Root returns at Emirates Old Trafford and will bat at four, with Zak Crawley moving up to number three.

Root missed the first Test following the birth of his second child.

The squad for the second Test, which begins on Thursday, means pace bowler Stuart Broad is in line for a recall after being omitted in favour of Anderson, Wood and Jofra Archer in Southampton.

With England playing six Tests in the space of seven weeks, their fast bowlers were always likely to be rotated, with Chris Woakes also coming into contention to play in Manchester.

Robinson, 26, has taken 236 wickets in 56 first-class matches at an average of 22.33, and was part of the England Lions team that defeated Australia A down under earlier this year.

England squad for second Test against West Indies: Joe Root (Yorkshire) captain, Jofra Archer (Sussex), Dominic Bess (Somerset), Stuart Broad (Nottinghamshire), Rory Burns (Surrey) Jos Buttler (Lancashire), Zak Crawley (Kent), Sam Curran (Surrey), Ollie Pope (Surrey), Ollie Robinson (Sussex), Dom Sibley (Warwickshire), Ben Stokes (Durham), Chris Woakes (Warwickshire).

England really should make this 1-1.

Arrival of Root should make the team stronger.

Looking forward to this.

England will be hurting after the defeat at Southampton and you'd expect them to bounce back.

Burns
Sibley
Root
Crawley
Stokes
Pope
Buttler
Curran
Bess
Archer
Broad

Should have played Leach in place of Bess.

Foakes and Leach deserved a chance this time especially Foakes who's been on the sideline for quite sometime now.

Something like this for me would do

Burns
Sibley
Crawley
Root
Stokes
Pope
Foakes
Woakes
Leach
Archer
Broad

Woakes has got be in, presumably for Curran.

Yes, Woakes in.

Actually, I typed Woakes first then I saw Sam Curran being named in the squad, so I assumed that Woakes is not a part of 13-man squad and hence edited it again to Curran.

And Woakes also. So Archer at 9, Leach 10 and Broad 11 makes sense.

Btw, how is Foakes doing? England seems to be persisting with Buttler only. Bairstow has been a good keeper over the years as well and averages about 35+ so any chances of his comeback?

Is Leach a better Test bowler than Adil Rashid?

I feel Adil or Moeen should be the spinner.

Bairstow's form really fell away. Averaging just 24 over the last couple of years (16 Tests).

Old Trafford is James Anderson's home ground and he averages 21 there so it would be surprising if he doesnt play.

Once again, rain will play a part in the proceedings

no broad
no root
no curran/woakes

that's the only reason England lost. Lets see if w.indies can compete when all 3 return.

England’s record in recent time at Trafford is insane : 9-1 in last 12 Test with the only loss last year. And that wicket is tailored for English attack. Neither team has any spinner and that track isn’t for spinners either - I don’t think ENG is going to pick Bess; they’ll go with all pace attack and do will WIN.

The weather forecast suggests a bowl first Test, but both teams are so shaky in batting that I think it won’t be a bad idea to bat first - till Saturday it’s gloomy forecast means both first innings will be under demanding conditions.

The difference of this Test from last could be Root - he averages 85 there and he is the regular Captain; also I believe he won’t be worse than Dom Bess as offie.

My hunch is 1-1, but would love to see WIN win this one and series. If Poms indeed lose this Test - it’ll be official: IND-AUS final at Lords.

I am almost certain this is going to be Pom line-up

1. Rory Burns
2. Dom Sibley
3. Zak Crawley
4. *Joe Root
5. Ben Stokes
6. Ollie Pope
7. +Jos Buttler
8. Chris Woakes
9. Sam Curran/Ollie Robinson
10. Stuart Broad
11. Jofra Archer

I would only ever play Bairstow in LO now. No clue why they persist with Buttler when Foakes is the better bat and keeper.

Woakes has gone backwards of late and I would get Curran in.

Also Root is not best at #3. That’s an Australian was of thinking. We put our best bat at #4 usually.

why isn't anyone putting curran in their lineup?

Short trundler who can't do much unless the ball swings. I'm more interested to see Ollie Robinson . Apparently he averaged 18 in the last 3 county seasons and took bucketful of wickets. Bess/Woakes/Broad/Robinsn should be a good attack from the given players. Ideally, Leach should have come ahead of Bess.

The rain is really keeping Cornwall out of the team, the pitch in the first test was ideal for him

Does it ever not rain in Manchester? Lol. Whenever there is a game in Old Trafford...I have seen rain interruptions. Remeber last year Ind vs Pak WC match when more focus was on rain than the actual game? ECB should rethink about this venue or atleast make a stadium roof etc.

A stadium with a roof would bankrupt the ECB several times over.

Well, Archer has proved you wrong there :yk

Completely forgot the 2nd Test started today.

Still not used to this thing they call cricket post-lockdown...

Rotation policy due to 6 Tests crammed in a short space of time.

I see....thanks. Though I would want Eng to play its full strength bowling attack against Pakistan considering they are a much better team than WI.

Right, here we go. Roach's fifth ball to Burns is a beauty.

Gabriel hasn't played much cricket in the last 12 months and it's showing so far in this over.

Roach's speed decline is sad. Makes sense with the accident and all the injuries but sad nonetheless. Grunting with all his might and barely hitting 130kph

1st innings scores at old trafford in the last 15 years have been almost invariably big. with the exception of a game featuring india. terribly negative decision by holder considering they are 1-0 up

Hope windies can justify this decision. Last time a visiting team won the toss , bowled first and won a match in England was in 2008

Think Pakistan's first game is at Old Trafford as well? England will be playing their 3rd game in a row here :mv

Burns and Sibley have faced quality new ball spells from roach and gabriel every time

imo they’ve chosen to bowl first because they don’t rate our batting lineup. And who can really blame them on that point, lol.

England are due to win...wounded and raring to go....WI made the mistake to put them in, pitch looks flat, Roach looks dibbly dobbly....that said curran is an awesome inclusion, so eng go with broad prat for jimgrumpy, curran will shore up the lower middle and tail but still bit of long tail....

if this turns out to be a flat pitch, I doubt the penetrative ability of the English attack with Woakes, Curran and Bess

Massive wicket right before lunch (reviewed). If it’s out it’ll redeem this whole session for windies

Honestly, I think it was a very poor decision . Stronger teams like Australia lost here last summer when Paine chose to bowl first in the fifth test. And this batting lineup was good enough to beat SA in SA.

So after all that hard graft you get out to the spinner over before lunch.

Joe Root will score a big hundred on this wicket. It's an Indian like wicket. Flat and will assist spinners going forward in the third days.

ENG 29/1 (13.2) CRR: 2.17
Day 1: Lunch Break - West Indies opt to bowl

Sibley is consistently slower than Misbah. Tuk Tuk of the 2020s. He will make a 300 ball 50 one day.:misbah3

:tuktukutd

Chase is a nightmare for england, can't even play him at all. Cornwall should have played this game as well

This is the wicket where you play Ashwin and Jadeja both. At 7 & 8. Good turn there to offer for spinners.

Why did they opt to bowl first!!!!!!! Couple of bonus wickets by Chase, otherwise WIN was doomed on first morning. Unless they get Root early, WIN isn’t going to win this game.

England with a strong batting depth in this match with Curran and Woakes at no 8 and 9.
