England [499/9d] defeat South Africa [209,237] by an inns & 53 runs to win 3rd Test, lead series 2-1

England fast bowler Jofra Archer is set to miss the third Test against South Africa, with Mark Wood likely to play.

The tourists were deciding between Archer, Wood and Chris Woakes to replace the injured James Anderson for the match in Port Elizabeth, which begins on Thursday.

But Archer has not completely recovered from his right elbow injury and Wood is in line for his first competitive game since the World Cup final in July.

The four-Test series is level at 1-1.

"The reason we've been quite cautious in terms of rushing Mark back is his history of injury," said Root.

"But every now and then, you can't worry about whether he's going to get through a five-day game.

"If they've proven themselves to be fit, if they've jumped through every hoop and worked very hard to get back there, you have to give them that opportunity."

Like Archer, Wood offers extreme pace, as well as reverse swing, but had knee surgery after the World Cup and has not played Test cricket since starring against West Indies in St Lucia 11 months ago.

"If he's 100%, bowling at 90mph-plus, the skills he has at that pace are going to cause problems and will be a great asset in Test cricket," said Root.

Anderson, England's all-time leading Test wicket-taker, suffered a rib injury during the second Test victory at Cape Town that has ruled him out of the rest of the series.

Archer played in the first Test, but missed the second with an elbow problem.

Woakes last played in the second Test against New Zealand in December. Along with Archer and Wood, he was struck down with the illness that hit the England squad before and during the first Test defeat at Centurion Park.

Root said that Archer's elbow injury was "a little bit of pushback from his body" after playing a "huge amount of cricket" since making his England debut in May.

"If he's fit and raring to go you want him in your side but you want to make sure he's 100% ready and he can deliver all his skills," said Root.

"We've got to look after him as a player and his career as well as just trying to win the series."

The victory in the second Test was England's first in Cape Town since 1957 and was achieved with five players aged 24 or under. All of the five - Dom Sibley, Zak Crawley, Ollie Pope, Sam Curran and Dom Bess - are set to play in Port Elizabeth.

"Your best win is your next one, but that was a very enjoyable one," said Root of the success in Cape Town.

"It was a massive moment for us, to level it up. It gives us nothing going into this game other than momentum and we have to make sure we follow that up.

"From a young team, it's really important that we don't live off that win for the rest of this tour. We have to try to try to exceed it."

Wicketkeeper Jos Buttler was fined following the second Test after stump microphones caught him swearing at South Africa's Vernon Philander.

"Jos has taken his reprimand and apologised. He knows that's not the sort of language you want to be using on the cricket field," said Root.

"You don't want to take away that niggle, that competitive element that brings the best out of players on the field. Getting the balance right, using the right language, but being competitive is still a good thing. You don't want to completely sanitise the game, but we know our responsibilities.

"In a way you'd like him to choose his words more carefully, but as a captain it shows how much it means to him."

England's Cape Town win was sealed on the final evening by three late wickets from Ben Stokes, who also struck 72 from 47 balls in the second innings.

That followed a stellar 2019, when he was named man of the match in the World Cup final and hit an incredible century to take England to victory in the third Ashes Test at Headingley.

On Wednesday, he was was named as the International Cricket Council's player of the year.

"It's hands down the right decision," said Root. "For me, at the moment, he's the best player in the world.

"He's an invaluable member of our squad as a senior player and a role model."

Proteas to 'rev it up' to Buttler
South Africa captain Faf du Plessis said his side were considering calling up seam bowler Dane Peterson, potentially in place of all-rounder Dwaine Pretorius or left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj.

"We are considering the possibility of looking at someone like Pato but we haven't decided on that yet," he said.

"A big question we would need to answer is 'for who?' If you do that, you're going to have one less batter or spinner. You need a spinner at St George's Park and you need a longer batting line-up, so it's not an easy decision."

Fast bowler Anrich Nortje said Buttler could face some hostile bowling in the third Test after swearing at Philander in Cape Town.

"It definitely gets one or two guys going," said Nortje. "It's not really something you can say on a stump mic.

"That's for umpires and whoever to sort out but it does get the blood flowing, and once we identify a moment, we will probably try to rev it up."

Just the one change from the second test for England - Wood for Anderson. They have a more incisive attack now.

Hope young Crawley gets some runs.

‘Jerusalem’ on the lone trumpet rings round the stands....

I understand SA being bold and playing a 5 man bowling attack, but there batting is seriously weak and will get exposed again in one of these 2 last test matches.

This looks like a really good batting wicket.

Patterson seems worthy but not outstanding. Why doesn’t Rabada get the new ball?

Patta track? Big runs for England coming I feel.

Another century for Sibley coming up.

And this pitch definitely needs two spinners

England openers just ticking over..... last year they would have been 25-4 by now.

Attrition. Wicket too slow to play many shots. Waiting game. Who will lose concentration first?

Good old fashion graft in 1st session, england will want to build upon this start.

It would be nice to see one shot-playing opener out of two, in the Gooch / Tres / Stewart mould. But the important thing is to build a platform for Root and the middle order. That’s what we have lacked, arguably, since Strauss finished. A couple more pieces are slotting in for England. With Leach and Burns back this is a good-looking young side.

I feel much more confident in Root coming in at 100-2 than 20-2.

Not sure what Poms are trying to achieve here. New ball is due in 25 overs and they might be stuck at 180/3 by then!!!!

Wicket seems very slow and dead to me.

Not sure if either team will take 20 wickets here.

This place is getting to you mate.

You've watched FAR too much Test cricket to be saying that before Tea on day 1.

Almost every Test these days sees a result. Nothing wrong with this pitch. In fact, England will be doing incredibly well to be anything better than 7/8 down by days end.

England in a strong position - 450+ looks on at the moment.

MAHARAJ KEEPS ENGLAND BATSMEN IN CHECK

Thursday, 16 January 2020

KESHAV MAHARAJ proved to be the cornerstone of the attack as the Standard Bank Proteas were relatively successful in combating the disadvantage of losing their sixth toss in a row on the opening day of the third Test match against England at St. George’s Park, Port Elizabeth, on Thursday.

In the end England closed the day on 224/4 in conditions that gave the home seamers no assistance at all in terms of pace, bounce, swing or seam and left one wondering which team had had the better day.

If there was no assistance for the seamers who included debutant Dane Paterson among their number, then there was at least some slow turn for Maharaj who bowled unchanged for most of the day after coming on after 22 overs and having a short breather when the second new ball was taken before having another couple before the close of play.

His analysis of 1/55 in 32 overs (11 maidens) was scant reward for his efforts and it could have been so much better as he lost out on a review against Ben Stokes thanks to an umpire’s call and also had England’s key player dropped off a very sharp chance to Pieter Malan at short leg.

The Proteas had looked in position to make a decisive breakthrough when Kagiso Rabada bowled England captain Joe Root to leave the visitors on 148/4. If Stokes had been dismissed at that stage, it would really have opened things up.

But Stokes, as always, played the match situation perfectly. At Newlands there had been the need for quick runs and he exploded; this time crease occupation was the key and the need to get England through the early stages of the second new ball.

He had the right partner in the highly impressive Ollie Pope as the pair added an unbroken 76 for the fifth wicket with Stokes finishing on 38 (86 balls, 5 fours) and Pope on 39 (79 ball, 7 fours).

If England will take one thing home from this tour it will be the fact that the youngster has nailed down a top order spot in the side. He was still a 21-year-old until the day before the Newlands Test started and his innings there which played a key role in their first innings lead together with the one he has played so far this time has underlined his potential.

With the conditions giving his seamers nothing, Faf du Plessis had to think out of the box during the lunch interval after England had reached 61 without loss at the first interval. And the plan he devised with a leg-side strategy similar to the one New Zealand had used with success against Steve Smith in their recent series in Australia worked to perfection between lunch and tea when the Proteas bowled 31 overs and took 2/56. There was more success in the hour after tea when two more wickets fell before Stokes and Pope took charge again as England scored 107 in the extended final session.

England are probably ahead in the match – but not by very much

Pope is batting way too low down the order.

Engs main concern is no. 3 and no. 4
Root has to score more runs.

Interesting point. I think Pope could be #4, Root #5 and Stokes #6. There is no shame in dropping down the order as skipper, even the great Richards did it.

Good old fashioned grind by England. Great opportunity for both Stokes and Pope to register hundreds tomorrow and completely shut South Africa out of the game.

The pitch will break up tomorrow afternoon so unless England have a catastrophic collapse in the morning session, the match is pretty much in the bag already.

Ollie pope is the real deal, just let him establish himself in that position before talking of moving up the order

The first Test match ever was played between England and Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) between 15 and 19 March 1877. 142 years later, England became the first cricket team ever to play 500 Test matches when they took the field against South Africa in the third encounter of the ongoing four-match series in Port Elizabeth. In 500 away Tests, England has managed to win 149 matches, while losing 182. 83 of these have been played in South Africa. They have a positive record of 32 wins, 31 draws and 20 defeats in the country.

England left out Jofra Archer and picked Mark Wood to replace James Anderson as they won the toss on Thursday and elected to bat. Archer, Wood and Chris Woakes had been in contention to replace Anderson, who went home after the second Test in Cape Town as a broken rib cut short his tour.

Archer missed the second test, which England won by 189 runs, because of an elbow injury which flared up again on Wednesday in practice before the third Test. Wood got the nod ahead of Woakes on a pitch where reverse swing is a possibility, depending on the direction of the wind.

Wood has only just returned from injury himself -- having not been in contention for the first two test on tour in South Africa -- and is playing his first test in almost a year since achieving career best figures of 5-41 against the West Indies in St Lucia last February.

“It is a surface that could deteriorate so we want to make good use of it up front,” said Joe root.

South Africa captain Faf du Plessis has now lost six successive tosses and is immediately on the backfoot with the four-match series level at 1-1.

“It would have been tough to decide what to do because with the wind there is a bit of swing on day one, but if I won the toss I would have batted first too,” Du Plessis added.

South Africa handed a debut to 30-year-old Dane Paterson, whose is the top bowler in domestic cricket and seen as likely to make good use of the conditions in Port Elizabeth. He takes the place of all-rounder Dwaine Pretorius.

Cape Town - One of the more puzzling South African decisions to emerge out of day one of the third Test against England in Port Elizabeth on Thursday was to give the new ball to Vernon Philander and debutant Dane Paterson.

Paterson might be a natural new ball bowler at the Cape Cobras, but letting him have first crack at the St. George's Park wicket meant that the Proteas' premier striker bowler, Kagiso Rabada, had to be patient.

Rabada was eventually introduced in the ninth over of the contest, replacing the soon-to-be-retired Philander.

It was a decision that ultimately backfired, with England cruising through the first session to be 61/0 at lunch.

Conditions were tough for the bowlers all day, with the wicket offering very little in the way of assistance to the seamers.

Keshav Maharaj (1/55 in 32) and Rabada (2/48 in 17) were the pick of the bowlers for the hosts as they eventually restricted England to 224/4 at stumps.

Philander, meanwhile, bowled just 11 overs on the day with Proteas bowling coach Charl Langeveldt explaining afterwards that the PE wicket did not suit their new ball ace.

"If you look at the surface it doesn't suit Vern that much. It's quite slow off the wicket and batsman can adjust," he said.

"We went with the extra seamer with Patto (Paterson), who is a bit quicker, and Vern is great with the new ball.

"But as we found out in these conditions previously, we decided that we would use him sparingly."

On the decision to go with Paterson over Rabada or the even quicker Anrich Nortje (1/52 in 15) up top, Langeveldt said the thinking was that the debutant would force the English openers into playing more shots.

"A lot of questions get asked sometimes about why we don't make the batsmen play enough, and we thought about it and decided that on this surface we needed to make the new ball count," he said.

"KG is a wonderful bowler with the new ball and captain and management just thought that we would go with Paterson who does bowl a fuller length and makes the batsman play more.

"Paterson brings something different to the party."

Langeveldt added that the tactics were in now way too defensive.

"You always look to strike. We looked to strike with the new ball and we just thought with a bit of moisture in it this morning, we needed to bowl a fuller length and that was the thought," he said.

"In the second innings KG would take the new ball."

When England resume their innings on Friday, they will have Ben Stokes (38*) and Oli Pope (39*) at the wicket.

England should be aiming to score very quickly now pope and stokes are set and getting at least 400. Scoreboard pressure should then start to effect SA weak batting.

Some rain predicted for tomorrow. Pity, the crowd and band should be in full swing over the weekend.

Clouds have marched over and it is humid. Would be difficult to hit the ball. England just keep ticking over, get to 400 and then decide how to proceed.

Digging this partnership. Absolutely superb.

Pope is a find.

England in “building a steady platform and then attacking” shock.... they forgot how to do this under Bayliss with many wrong selections, but are remembering under Silverwood.

The time has come for Ben Stokes to become Sir Ben Stokes.

It also appears that the team “that cannot play Test cricket” is going to win in South Africa again.

England in “building a steady platform and then attacking” shock.... they forgot how to do this under Bayliss with many wrong selections, but are remembering under Silverwood.

Bayliss won them a World Cup though. I think it was a fair deal to neglect Test cricket for 4 years to win a World Cup.

England will always be a quality Test side, but they may never win another World Cup. It was a very important moment in the history of English cricket.

got to say he impressed me. struggles vs bounce a bit though but that's expected. He is still young. Solid find. potential root replacement.

Root replacement?, he's known to be a good young bat in first class cricket who further enhanced his game in Australia grade cricket, his real acid test will be against a quality all round attack like indias or Australia

Pope is the next Ian Bell. Hopefully he will absorb the pressure of international cricket better.

Bell should have been among the top 5 batsmen produced by England. He had all the technique and talent in the world but not the confidence.

Stokes is starting to become slightly freakish in his consistency. A brilliant cricketer, one of the world’s best at the moment if not the best.

For all his unfulfilled potential , Bell still averaged 40 off with 20 centuries, and won england the ashes against a high class australia attack. The current england team would take someone of that quality gladly.

In what capacity? Root should relinquish the captaincy but has another eight years as a batsman.

Belly was retired too soon. Should have brought him back after they dropped KP.

All that practice and focus is bringing results. The big shock of getting dropped and the court case has done him good, he is maximising his ability now.

If only we had Sibley and Pope for the Ashes instead of Roy and Bowledstow, we would have the urn now.

Yes, and it is a reflect of his immense ability. He should have averaged 50+ with 35 hundreds and multiple Ashes 2013 type series.

Unfortunately he didn’t build on the 2011-2013 patch.

Stokes once again under pressure performing with the bat, which underlines he is England's best bat in the last year and half

Ninth test hundred for Ben Stokes. He must love batting against SA.

Bell was a good player against average bowling, against quality attacks he was average

England dominating this match completely.

South Africa will need a fair bit of rain to get out of this one.

Pope looks so good. The find of the series for England. He will bat at 4 for Surrey next season so expect him to grow and grow. Good by England to ease him in at 6. But he is standing up in difficult circumstances.

what does robert have to say about stokes now?

stokes is just unbelievable.

Like I said before. He’s another Botham with the bat and in the field, but not with the ball.

Surely buttler needs to be axed for this niggtm to end , he's a white ball cricketer

Yeah, I think they are keeping him in case Root hangs up the armband. But surely Foakes must come back, given a decent start with the Brown Hats this year.
