Archer needs a rest;

Marnus gone, LBW to a Stokes full toss.

Tough on the chap, just lost the ball and missed it, but a really good innings.
 
Labuschagne carrying the batting line up on his back a la Steve Smith.

This Aussie batting line up really is pitiful. Someone get Shane Watson to come out of retirement and pad up. At least he’ll make 30 before getting out (and wasting a review)
 
These are the best bowling conditions I've seen in a long time, I actually think England S bowling been erratic
 
Australia have gone from 136/2 to 179 all out, what a capitulation!!

Archer 6-46, fantastic bowling.
 
England need to bat all day tomorrow and into the third morning. That would give them a lead of at least 100, which would be huge in these conditions. But if they get bowled out tomorrow for less than 220, Australia will be back in the game.
 
179 is an acceptable return for England after inserting Australia. I reckon if they get 250 it could set up the win.
 
Australia score 5 more than Pakistan did last year. Headingley can be a real tough place for overseas batsmen.
 
I think England will put a good total in first inning tomorrow when they come to bat. Conditions will be better and there won't be any scoreboard pressure either.

Australia have a good bowling attack but think England looks in control of the game already.
 
What a turnaround. England have to make it count with the bat tomorrow with the sun coming out.
 
Archer is changing this series around.

The sun should be out for the next few days. England have to take advantage of this.
 
Jofra Archer took his maiden Test five-for on day one of the third Ashes Test at Headingley as Australia finished the day all out for 179.

Archer and England enjoyed a rampant evening session as Australia's final eight wickets fell for just 43 runs. Archer was at the heart of the collapse, finishing the innings with figures of 6/45.

With the Lord’s Test heavily affected by rain, it was a case of déjà vu for both sides in the morning as the start of play was delayed due to the poor weather.

Joe Root opted to bowl with overhead conditions looking in his side’s favour. Archer continued his excellent form by dismissing Ashes debutant Marcus Harris cheaply, the left-hander’s outside edge found with Jonny Bairstow doing the rest behind the stumps.

Rain returned to force another break in play, and lunch was taken before the restart. Another Australian wicket followed soon after, Usman Khawaja strangled down the leg-side for eight by Stuart Broad.

David Warner – batting with four single-figure scores in the series behind him – battled through a tough introduction to get himself and Australia ticking along, as England began to find life a whole lot tougher.

Another couple of interruptions arrived as both the weather and bad light proved to be frustrating, but the Australian batting pair found rhythm. Warner went to his first half-century since his return to Test cricket, and Labuschagne, mightily impressive at Lord’s after replacing Steve Smith as a concussion substitute, once again looked right at home in the heat of an Ashes battle, wristy throughout the leg side and perfectly balanced playing down the ground.

The pair took Australia to 136/2 from 25/2, and it looked as if Root’s call to put Australia in was backfiring. But then Archer was summoned, and within just a few overs England were smiling once more.

The paceman found Warner’s outside edge to get things rolling before Broad had the ball jag away to clip the top of Travis Head’s off stump: a simply sublime delivery. England then found fortune when, seven balls later, Matthew Wade’s thigh pad helped deflect the ball on to the stumps.

In the middle of all that carnage, Labuschagne advanced to his third Test half-century. Skipper Tim Paine resisted for 11 but was shown to be lbw on review from a ball that nipped back in from Chris Woakes. Archer then had James Pattinson dismissed for two to give him his fourth, and Pat Cummins helped him get to a landmark moment: a first five-wicket haul in international cricket.

Labuschagne's excellent innings finished tamely, a full toss from Ben Stokes pinning him lbw, but it had to be Archer who finished proceedings, removing Nathan Lyon for one to make it another day to remember in a short international career that has already been filled with so many highlights.

Australia really need another quality batsman . Will pucovski is supposed to be a once-in-a-generation talent but with his health issues I don't see him realising his potential any time soon. Even Smith can't carry this batting all the time.

Yep, pain needs to be replaced by carey and khawaja needs to be axed
 
Australia opener David Warner was full of praise for Marnus Labuschagne, after the youngster made a second consecutive fifty-plus score in the Ashes, on a rain-marred opening day of the third Test at Headingley.

The 25-year-old South African-born cricketer made his Ashes debut in the fourth innings of the previous Test, at Lord's, coming in as a concussion replacement for Australia's star batsman Steve Smith, who was pulled from the Test after suffering a sickening blow to the neck by a Jofra Archer bouncer on the fourth day.

On Thursday, 22 August, the opening day at Headingley, only Warner (61) and Labuschagne (74) played notable knocks, while the rest of the line-up crumbled as England bowled Australia out for 179. Warner shared a crucial 111-run stand for the third wicket with Labuschagne.

"I thought Marnus was outstanding with his discipline," Warner said after play. "Coming here and playing county cricket for Glamorgan, scoring runs and knowing where his off-stump is has paid off. He’s got a lot of fight in him, and it was great to talk through our innings out in the middle.

"For us, it was about pushing the field. We always spoke about running between wickets and we pushed the field as much as we could. That can break up some tension when they're bowling well. Just little things we were ticking over in our minds, we were running hard, we were leaving well, but make sure we are being ultra positive and that's probably why we got that period."

Warner himself had struggled to find form in the first two Tests, having scored only in single digits – 2, 8, 3 and 5 – before clicking here.

"I was always confident I could find form," he said. "Good balls were getting me out, and that happens in this form of the game. I got another one today. It was very challenging in that first half-hour. I probably played and missed 35 times, but that happens and a little bit of luck comes into it. You just have to work out how to survive."

When Smith comes back straight swap khawja Smith bats 4 labushane 3, in next series Paine out carey in, looks a better batting line up

Until Roy learns how to play the ball under his eyes rather than in front of his body then he's a walking wicket specially in England or Australia or south Africa
 
Good start by Australia. But they should look to stop England under 200.
 
Roy is not worth opening the batting for England and Root should get back to batting at 4. At the end,what matters is that you don't struggle for runs.

No, it didn't. Burns played that shot because he was scared to face the short ball, it had nothing to do with the scoring rate. It was poor technique and judgment.

how do you know he was scared? he was trying to score some runs. misjudged the ball and got out.

pressure mounts when no one is scoring.

Like I said it's a marathon not a sprint, after dismissing Aussies for 179 England have ample time to score big, as for burns getting out is a lapse in concentration
 
England continue to play pathetic white ball cricket shots in longer version of the game :facepalm:

It's a test match, meaning test of concentration, technical ability, the ticker, the mentality , his dismissal is a lapse in concentration

He has been repeatedly getting out to the short ball in this series, he was visibly discomfited every time Cummins bowled short to him. That weak attempt to swat the ball away was a predictable outcome when a batsman is unable to deal with the short ball.

Did you miss the match saving innings last test? Was the only batsman who looked comfortable and was out by bad luck

He doesn't have the numbers in domestic and looked a very bits and pieces player to me. Has played decently this series no doubt.
 
All wickets have been edges gone to first slip or to wicket-keeper.

He looks the part when he bats- looks organised. But the bits n pieces tag will be fair enough call until he starts to produce some tons to prove he's a genuine batsman, who can bowl decent part time stuff/partnership breaker.

Magnificent all round team fast bowling display so far. Just not let off.

I feel Hazlewood needs a rest now though.
 
Unless something extreme happens it looks like Eng isnt winning this ashes if this match finishes the way its looking like. If Eng looses the best possibility for them would be winning the last two to draw the series but thats also highly improbable.
 
Australia had to bat in much tougher conditions yesterday, when the ball just wouldn't stop swinging pretty much for most of the day.

Pathetic batting display from England. Joe Root needs to be relieved of the captaincy after this series, it's clear that the extra responsibility of leading the side is taking its toll.

Holding made the good point- Oz bowlers don't get discouraged if it's sunny. It's every day in Oz but this time they have that nice juicy Dukes ball who will move anyway, not the Kookaburra stubborn rock.

All the excuse of the not been prepared during ireland test ect.. and england will improve can go out of the window.

Really shameful stuff with bat from england and this has been the case for a while.

Australia flawless, England hopeless.

Only realistic chance from an England point of view now is to try and get within 50 of the Australian total by tea, and then plan to skittle them for a low enough score that a 4th innings run chase might be possible tomorrow.
 
Great bowling but some very flawed batting.

Boycott's "lemmings" call is spot on.

Where is a Vaughan, Atherton, Thorpe, Strauss, Stewart etc to just dig in? This does not look like a Test batting lineup.

Nobody is chasing anything above 100 in 4th innings in this test. Both teams are mental midgets with bat.
