What's new

England finish Day 2 on 92/4 in response to Pakistan’s first-innings total of 326

You have to admit Shan has exceeded your expectations. The likes of Sami Aslam and Imam, who you previously vouched for, could never produce a knock like this.

I definitely admit. To be honest he exceeded my expectations in last two home series itself when he was able to convert his starts into big scores and I think that gave him the much needed confidence.

One year ago couldnt imagine Shan producing 3 test centuries in 3 consecutive series. This one came in in the first innings of a first test itself so hopefully more to come.

The new ball is a threat but also an opportunity to score runs more quickly when the opposition has less defensive fields.

I give credit where its due, Shadab has rotated strike nicely but we still have work to do, and he must perform with the ball too as he is an allrounder.

Also forgive me for wanting to see a guy who has 30+ FC tons and FC average of 55 to be given a fair chance.

So go back in your hole.

He is better and provides more value with the bat at number 7 than fawad, because he bats at a vastly greater tempo.
He isn't tremendously talented but he has always punched above his weight; this innings, the 3 fifties in 2018, and a 47 not out in South Africa prove this.

And yes, it would be better if you are more respectful in your replies. Being a veteran poster doesn't give you the right to be insolent.

Shadab is doing his bit with the bat so far !

I think, not many had any issues with Shadab playing as second spinner, but as the lead spinner with four pacers - no, and a big no on this track. I in fact wrote that if Gohar was available for this Test Gohar & Shadab could have been a better combination than two leggis.

350+ needed here.

Are England bowling with new ball?

I think Imam is also a gritty player. In tests he can match Shan definitely

Actually, had it not been a drastic move, would have been tempted to swap Imam for Azhar and have Babar or Shan as “floating” captains with lots of input from YK/Misbah off the field. But that’s too novel an idea I think. If PAK are to salvage the series it’ll have to be with these two liabilities AA and AS. Really wish they score and just sign off on a high but that’s wishful maybe. If AS keeps going like this, FA should be in contention or Imam with the order shifted +1 downwards.

One interesting consequence of Stokes not bowling is that both Shadab and Woakes have to score runs from number 7...

He has exceeded mine too but after the series he had in SA, I knew he was a different player to the one we saw before.

Azhar Ali needs to be booted out and Shan Masood should be the new captain.

Whatever happens from now onwards, Pak is in the game big time.

Another positive is that SM seems to not have the New Age Pakistan style of thinking 100 is up, now I can play loose. Maybe YK and Palmer influence.

A reminder to everyone that Shadab is only 22!

Can you imagine what he will turn into 5-7 years down the line. Definitely one to persist with.

Really like the fitness of Shan. Paying off here, look at the quick singles he is taking.

Defo YK influence espically the running

If Azhar's complete series turn out to be as barren as the last two years I think its inevitable and should be done. For the sake of the series I will hope Azhar can turn it around but, Shan should be the eventual test candidate especially if management dont want to burden Babar with a lot at this age.

He should focus more and more an his batting, as he can make this team merely on batting. (he is even better in LOIs)

Proud of Shan. It just shows you that hard work and perseverance pays off.

It is YK who gave Shan the nickname of Commando.

Most crucial partnership for Pakistan. Shadab has done marvellous job with shan .

Let's see what is next excuse for shadab haters

Definitely, havent seen Pak running like this since Inzi, Younus and Yousuf days in the middle order. Younus has turned this aspect around sooner then my expectations.

Absolutely!!!

He’s a real gem and the hate he gets from some is uncalled for.

Shan Masood captain

Grant Flower head coach

Lets make it happen guys!

Someone just posted that Hardwork triumphs over talent. 100% agree. If Asad keeps wasting away, FA’s ethic and hardwork should be given a shot.

Pakistan's running has been superb this afternoon.

Ones, two and threes this Test:

Day 1, Session 1 - 21 Day 1, Session 2 - 15 Day 1, Session 3 - 10 Day 2, Session 1 - 21 Day 2, Session 2 - 32

Did everyone catch that mini Younis interview on Shan's century?

Unfortunately the footage is on mute because I'm at work but I could see him talking with a blue background behind him.

What did he say?

Agreed he knows he cant change technique in 1 month but he knows he can change mindset and self belief

Younis Khan’s work already paying off.

Great running between the wicket.

He said that Shan started his first class career and grew up in front of him so he knows how to deal with him

Praising Shan. Talking about the mentality. Saying he was nervous and would have cried had he lost his wicket in the nervous 90's. Overall, just praising the efforts Shan has put in. Talking about how Shan grew up infront of him and how he has been like a cheerleader for him throughout his career

He works hard like crazy.. hence he got the nickname from YK. It came to light during his epic SL innings.

Last pak opener to score test hundred in eng was saeed anwar in 1996

He was praying that Shan doesn't get out on nervous 90s.

Thanks guys

The biggest challenge for a young batting side is to convert these 100's to big 100's. Younis replying to the question about the difficulties Pakistani's batsmen face when coming to England and facing the duke ball.

Firstly you picked an argument not me.

Secondly, I never wanted Fawad at 7. My point is Azhar Ali averages 28 since the retirement of Misbah and Younis, and about 12 overseas. And he's the captain batting at 3.

Meanwhile Asad Shafiq is good for one knock per series. If Fawad, with a FC avg of 56 and 34 FC hundreds cannot get ahead of these two who right now are being outperformed by guys with a fraction of the experience - then merit in Pakistan is dead.

As for Shadab's Test performances, it's still a small sample size. If he can keep this up after 15-20 Tests then fair play to him. I remember that 50 vs Ireland, he was also the specialist spinner and he couldn't even bowl the Irish out in the 2nd innings which meant a tricky chase of 150. His fifties at Lord's and Headingley were great and I credited him at the time, like I'm crediting this knock now.

Now 320 is within reach... when I first logged in today 220 seemed FAR away.

YK interview on Sky just now in drinks break - summary:

- Shan would have been devastated had he gotten out in 90s
- Not easy to work on mentality in such a short tenure for me; we only worked on mentality/temperament
- He started playing in front of me so I know how he works/thinks, and I can deal with him/groom him well
- Kept encouraging him to follow his own game
- (about opening batting after winning toss) not a surprising choice, even out batsmen wanted to bat first having watched the Windies series - targeting 300+
- pitch was good but cloud cover was tough; just wanted them to apply themselves
- (biggest challenge for Pak batsmen) converting 50s to 100s and 100s to daddy 100s
- don’t get too prescriptive just try to convey the importance of applying yourself

However, I don't think this track isn't that a mine field commis are making out of the turn. It's like typical Indian wicket with a bit more steady bounce on it,which will be good for batting in ENG's first innings as well. PAK should look to post 400+, preferably at a faster rate to stump absolute authority.

Can I say, as an Englishman, this is why I don’t rate Root’s captaincy.

New ball, last two recognised batsmen, and he has an offie bowling at one end and Woakes bowling defensive bouncers at the other end.
