Freddie's not having a good match so far, seems like he's spent after his efforts at Lords, the decision to retire seems more sensible now!

Agreed , Its a good decision to reitre from tests to continue his ODI career.
Is freddie playing in this match with painkillers ?

^^^Not quite!

Clarke adjudged LBW - Rudi lifts the finger

Aus 5 down

Jimmy strikes

Poor decision by Rudi to give that LBW - was missing leg stick by 3-4 inches.

Manou off the mark with a boundary

Graham Manou starts his career with a four of his 2nd ball . Has below average FC stats , Wonder why he's picked :13: ?

Manou - 2 boundaries in 3 balls!

Man, Stuart Broad is rubbish! - He is to Eng what Malik is to Pak!

Because he is a specialist wicket-keeper 1st & foremost.

Here's one you wont hear often!

Great catch by Prior!!!

Marcus North is OUT!

Aus are 6 down!!

Jimmy on a hat trick!

Mitchel Johnson out1st ball! - looked high to me

202-7

Rudi having another poor game - given out 2 LBWS that were clearly missing the stumps!

Ponting wont be happy :)

300 is looking like good score considering the current conditions , Anything above that would be splendid.

The Aussies came with too many over-hyped players like Phil Hughes and Mitchell Johnson set themselves up for a fall.

Aussies need to buck up or the ashes might be gone by the ends of this match

Ponting's getting a taste of his own medicine...........I don't think Rudi's getting a pay check this time ;-)

Why England persist with Broad is beyond me - he's a passenger.

A debutant Wicket keeper and a tail-ender on the crease . What would you expect the final total to be?

Jimmy bowls Manou!

Thats lunch - what a session!!!

7 wkts for about 70 runs this morning!

Jimmy takes 4-4 in 2 overs!

203-8 [Lunch]

Electric atmosphere at Edgbaston. Ashes has won me over

The aussies are cooked and ready to be served .
Well done Jimmy , who knows maybe you are the 3rd best bowler in the world.......

7/77 in a session. England on top, they bowled alot better today and drew alot of the Aussies batsmen onto front foot and also forced them into playing shots away from their bodies against the moving ball.

Intresting to see how England bat and Aussies bowl later.

Very ordinary stuff from the OZ. Same issues as at Lords - when conditions are overcast and the ball is swinging they couldn't adapt. It's one thing to screw it up once, because you can learn from it - it's another thing to make the same mistakes again.

That said, as long as the conditions remain like this for the whole day hopefully England will have to deal with it as well.

But will Mitch be able to adjust his lengths to take advantage? not to mention bowl reasonably straight?

The Troubling thing is that English batsmen can adapt easily to swing conditions so the Aus bowlers would have to work extra hard.

Not talking about Mitch - I'm not relying on him to do anything at the moment. I'm hoping Hilf and Siddle can do a job on them. This is where Nathan Bracken would have been useful - he's not a Test bowler but in these conditions he can take fifer.

Should've been the end of the innings, poor Onions should've had it even better today, Bopara's the guilty party this time, pretty pathetic effort to be honest.

should clarke have been included..a bit of experience may have done the OZ some good!

65.6

Anderson to Hilfenhaus, 2 runs, Hilfenhaus was several minutes too late on this one, but still got it away to leg. What a legend

Looks like someone's in a funny mood today.

Hayden was in a funny mood.

The Ashes battle is hotting up on the airwaves as well as the pitch after a falling out between Matthew Hayden and Geoff Boycott on the opening day at Edgbaston while working for Test Match Special. Hayden, who has joined for the rest of the summer, said Boycott's batting style "emptied cricket grounds" and Boycott promptly stormed out of the commentary box saying "don't need comments like that at my stage." They shook hands later, but things could still be tense

This partnership is building , 25 runs of 6.3 overs so far.
Haurtiz is looking quite set , has faced 46 balls so far.

It's embarrassing to see tailenders putting in more application than specialist batsmen though. Maybe the conditions aren't as bad as I thought. What's the weather like? Still overcast?

Manou takes his 1st dismissal in test cricket - off Siddle

Cookie is gonie

2-1

Absolutely ridiculous that Johnson isn't taking the new ball.

This is turning out to be a cracking match Bopara needs to make runs here this might be his last chance.

Ravinder is a dead cert for the whole series - esp with KP ruled out

All out. Hopefully they're not tempted to open with MJ.

Still no swing for Hilfenhaus - cricinfo

Very good recovery by Eng. Strauss 7(12) - Bopara 9(20)
Eng 16-1 after 6 overs- trail by 247 runs

Amazing how he was swinging it during the warmups but not now.

Plenty of 'obsene' chanting going on from the Eng fans...

Siddle bowling with lots of aggression but Aussies realy need to make some deep inroads into this england inns.

HAHA! Sarcastic 'Super Mitch' chanting from Eng fans!

Well they love him to bits, he was effectively England's 12th man in the last match able to play a full part in proceedings.

Hauritz comes on before Johnson! Thats a bit embarrasing!

Haha, '05 wasn't enough? Great test so far, already some vicious turns in momentum have taken place in a day and a half.

2 overs ago

19.2 Hilfenhaus to Bopara, OUT, he's dragged it on! Technical weakness exposed by Hilfenhaus as Bopara goes back, his bat coming down diagonally and he gets a thick inside edge into his stumps

RS Bopara b Hilfenhaus 23 (54b 4x4 0x6) SR: 42.59

Eng 60-2 after 21 overs
Strauss 37 - Bell 0

SHane Warne doesnt seem to know the meaning of being neutral as a commentator :))

I guess you have to admire his ability to keep talking positively about his team even as they continue to show they are a very ordinary outfit indeed.

if australia loose the ashes, do you guys think he will still be captain of australia. they have lost only two test series to south africa and india but I think his days are numbered if he looses the ashes.

Totally ^_^ , I expect Pup to take the big dog's place.

Need a wicket before stumps, and need to pray for overcast conditions tomorrow. A day interrupted by rain showers would be nice.

wow that was plumb...Ian Bell was gone plumb..RUDI RUDI

it was so plumb that i diddnt realize i am at work and once i saw the reply i went 'OHHHH' really loud only to realize i am at the office

LOL, even Lady Luck has deserted MJ

I'm sorry, but that is an awful decision. That was dead plumb. Pitched in line, straightening, very low down on the pad, no inside edge. Oh dear.

33.3

Johnson to Bell, no run, howzat? Oooh, a very quick shake of the head from Rudi. Johnson finally gets one to swing in and strikes Bell in line. Not out lbw.

MJ needs to just pick himself up and keep trying. He's bowling better, he needs to keep his spirits up.

Spitting with rain at the ground according to a friend who is there.

Rain and/or bad light will stop play soon.

Hard to see this being much else than a draw.

OZGOD whats the reaction to the games in australia. any one calling for ponting to go?

People will be calling for Dubya to go like they always do when there's a loss. The response is usually more muted than it is in Pakistan or India though. Generally in OZ when a captain is stripped of his captaincy it's the end of his position in the side, because we don't want division in the team when some players support the previous captain and others the new one.

The main reason that people were calling for his head in 2005 was because he made some boneheaded decisions like bowling first at Edgbaston and because at the time there was a clear replacement in Shane Warne.

I guess we understand that our team is in a transitional phase right now and that the young blokes need a bit more experience.

That said, this is the Ashes...

Some of England's best bowling in a long time today. Fantastic comeback that has given me a real buzz throughout the day of work, kept on pulling out my phone to check the score online! It's going to be raining a lot but there could still be enough overs for a team to win, depends on how the pitch holds up. I reckon England will be after 400+ to have a lead and put Australia under the pressure of days 4 and 5 being behind in the game. However I still anticipate a few twists, we could collapse from this position in the same fashion that Australia did!

To have a 1-0 lead after two tests was beyond my wildest dreams, as for being 2-0 up after three tests I'm nearly exploding with excitement at that prospect. Wowwwww. :D
