England v Australia | 4th Test | Headingley | 7-11 Aug 09

England need another 220 runs to even have a chance of winning. I would give us a chance with Prior and Broad in, but we've lost too many wickets. It's actually a shame the top/middle order have been so abysmal in this game because we could have got a lot closer to the Aussies, goes to show there is really not much of a gap between the two sides.

I reckon a bit of slogging and lashing, all out in an hour and take at least a bit of momentum from the day. to avoid the innings defeat would be incredible, under the circumstances.

Swann gone caught behind off Johnson for 62 off 72 balls

He didnt look quite happy with Bowden's decision

Ponting didn't give Hilffi a chance for 5fer. Now Johnson looking for 5fer

As I said its all over!

Onions clean bowled by Johnson! Johnson ends with 5 wickets!

Well played Australia!

Ashes is now open with 1-1 with 1 match to go! Oval will be good!

England's tail doing some level of damage control - showing the top order how to bat.

Its not a shame to be defeated by the AUS team after 4 tests but the manner inwhich they lost is really poor ! I still cant understand why Strauss wabted to bat first.

I still back ENG to win the oval test and the ashes :)

Huge win and really important in the context of the series. We needed this win bad.

Broad and Swann did well during the morning but I'm less worried - it's easy to cowlash when there's absolutely no pressure. Though they did ruin some bowling figures lol. Now the question will be: will the same side be picked for the Oval Test or will the Poms prepare a square turner to get us to play Horroritz instead of Clark? If this happens the selectors should all retire. Did we even use any spinners in this match?

As for England, I think they have some serious problems with their batting, less so with their bowling. I know their bowlers sprayed it everywhere but I still think having Barmy Harmy there strengthens them as Flingtoff has been very ordinary with the ball. What they're missing is a momentum-changer type of player, someone like Flingtoff who can galvanise a side around them, and whose deeds have an effect far out of proportion to the actual actions themselves. (E.g. Flingtoff might bowl a hostile spell that takes no wickets but roughs up the batsmen and gives his teammates confidence.) They may have to replace Jimmy Anderson though.

We'll see.

England have some serious issues with their middle order and lack of runs Bopara, Bell and collingwood. Atleast 2 of these guys should be dropped.

I think the recall of Stuart clark brought stability to bowling line up and also return to bowling form of MJ was a huge boost.

Hopefully will get a cracker at the oval.

Stuart Clark's initial spell set the tone for the match and the other guys stepped up accordingly.

there's no excuse for the Aussies to lose the Ashes now...right combination of bowlers, batsmen in good touch, rejuvenated Mitch and Siddle, and an England team lacking KP and Fred...they can't lose it even if they tried now :P

We will be burning effigies if they lose it from here. :inzi

Bell has serious temperament issues, he just cannot lift his game against the Aussies especially in pressure situations. Bopara at best should be batting lower down the order. Collingwood does not have the technique to cope with seaming conditions. England need to get another proper batsman in the team.

Harmison had a really poor game at Headingly where the conditions were perfect for him. Anderson looks injured so he may have to go as well. Siddebottom should get a game now.

Actually I would have said the conditions did not suit Harmison because:

a) the bounce in the pitch was spongy and his natural delivery sat up to be hit

b) it was a high pressure game with a lot at stake ;-)
