Toss is going to be crucial. Expect both teams to want to bowl first. Team winning the toss will be favorites to win the match.

Asif would have been a nightmare for the english batsman to face now.. Will be cloudy for today and tomorrow.. chance for both teams to unleash their swing brigades and tough days for batsmen.... sunshine comes in day3... day3 would be a good day for batting..

Lets hope we bat first and survive at least 100 overs.

Batting first would be the ultimate disaster, if my memory serves me right; the last time we tried batting first on this track we were bundled out of 70 odd runs. Plus the record of teams batting first in Edgbaston isn't that inspiring as well.

Most logical decision would be, if we win the toss, is to bowl first and try to utilize the early moisture / spice on the track. If we somehow manage to get them around 250 odd runs then maybe, and that's a huge maybe, we might have a minuscule chance of toppling them in this game.

Its a tough call: balancing between "the right thing to do" and the recent history of this ground. Like any sporting pitch the first two hours need to be given to the bowlers and thereafter batting becomes more manageable. Whereas, just as recently as 2015 Australia batter first, made a mess of it and were dismissed for 168 runs in their first innings. Its tempting to hide your weak suite and put the opposition in to bat if you win the toss, as a Pakistani captain. But the right thing should be to bat first.
I would be surprised if Cook doesnt bat first after winning the toss.

And this is based on a hunch, recent numbers, natural game (Pakistan version of gut feeling) or something as subjective as aggression and positive play ??

The reason why our cricket isn't evolving because in all honesty we are the only nation that does not rely on scientific logical process reasoning in making decisions  I mean.......seriously..... SMH

Depends on the pitch.

The last county game showed it was a bat-first pitch. Hampshire put up 531.

http://www.espncricinfo.com/warwickshire/engine/match/946881.html

In fact, the last five county matches on the ground have had a similar story. The team batting first has put more runs on the board than their opponent.

after the second test, lost all the excitement. It's more like Ya Allah phainti na paray is match main right now :))

i'm torn. If we bat first i wont be surprised if we get rolled over for nothing. And then the match is over..but if we bowl first our lullo brigade may start bowling pies and letting them score a massive score again..dont forget we dropped a few catches in the last match..glad I'm not Misbah.

I would bring in IK not sohail. IK can give us control and should (he says) prosper in English conditions. Sohail however could give us a strike option. My issue is he leaks runs and is a little mediocre...could end up going around the park..

I think Pakistan have been fighting the ghosts that don't exist on this tour. Prior to their arrival (and their training) was all for seaming pitches. we havent seen any of those so far. The Lords pitch was just right for them medium bounce, but no seam. The OT pitch had bounce which was their undoing (but also the scoreboard pressure). Plus as folks have pointed out, its been a pitch full of runs this season. More and moe, batting first seems like the right thing to do.

Need to be brave and bat first.

In the last 7 Tests at Edgbaston, the team batting first has lost 5 times and drew twice thanks to rain.

The last time the team batting first won at this venue was in the 2005 Ashes.

I'll, as for now, buy into the positivism that you're generously handing out on this thread (pretty reminiscent of the Nikkah kay Chuwaray) however, barring Papa Shafiq and Sarfraz to some extent; I have no confidence in our batting lineup to negotiate any sort of swing that Anderson or Board might extract today !!

It has been raining for the past few days in Birmingham. The pitch would have been covered and there will be plenty of moisture and plenty for the bowlers. Friday and Saturday look like the best days to bat. Tough decision for the captains.

whatever the case is, our bowling needs to shows their mojo. it has always been our bowling that wins us matches.

Excited!!! After the damp squib that our 2nd test has turned out to be, more than ready to tune into (touchwood) sunny England, and hopefully much more of a real contest.

Wow, that pitch looks dry and a bit rough too. Should be some reverse and maybe even some turn.

Hope Misbah doesn't win the toss.

He is going to get ripped of by the fans regardless of whichever decision he chooses. It's that sort of a toss conundrum we have today..

Im not too far from edgbaston and looking out my window it is definetly overcast, with the sun trying to break through.

Dont know which way the weather is to go and im not sure whether pak should bat or bowl.

Well i guess when in doubt - BAT first if given the choice!

Any idea if Pakistan will go for a 5th bowler today? I would really say it would be more important to shore up their strengths first, before relying on an additional batsman.

You should be at the ground.

The county games recently have been a different story.

As far reports, no chance of 5th bowler. And may be, just may be we are going to see same crippled bowling attack.

You may be right but it quite warm and the moisture could decipitate after 1st session and if the sun wins it battle with the clouds, it could become a beautiful pitch to bat on today after lunch.

WHO KNOWS?

Will be a bit disappointed then :(

At the very least they should opt for an additional line of attack from 3 LFMs to 2 + 1 RFM maybe ...

But then the only disposable bowler would be Wahab, and if the pitch is rough as somebody mentioned, he is the best guy for some reverse stuff. Decisions!!!

Need to win the toss and bowl 1st and do some early damage against englands batsmen, if we are inserted 1st i can see us been bowled out for less then 150 on 1st inns, Massive toss this and crucial to which way series will go.

I think Pak will be batting first in this match.

If Eng win toss, they will put Pak in.

If Pak win it, they will want to bat as their team are set up for yasir bowling in the 4th inns.

Pakistan have to bat first.

First session will be tricky but not very difficult to bat. It's no minefield.

Maybe, but i dont think england want to bat last on this pitch with yasir to face on a worn pitch.

Trust me England will bat first if they win toss. They don't want to bat last on it, especially against Shah.

Hafeez on sky sports. The guy just can't accept his limitation as a player.

Athers asking Hafeez on Sky [previously filmed interview] about helping Shan Masood to cope with English conditions.

Not sure whether to laugh or cry as he staggers through his answer.

Every wicket so far in the tour has been bar wicket, no mambas seen so far, from what I am hearing this one is not the same seaming track that Australia faced.

Bat first pitch ??

I would say bowl first.

It might be more interesting to watch for neutrals if Eng bat first. This is potentially the best opportunity for Amir and party to show what they have got. Historically the liveliest ground.

I hope Yasir has sorted out his lengths too.

This pic must be photoshopped!

Its overcast - PAK should definetly BOWL FIRST if given the choice!

If it stays like this i can see pak bowled out for less 200 and barely lasting 2 sessions, if they bat first in these conditions!

Don't know i should laugh or cry on you, guess you should search about Saj Sadiq :)

If i am not wrong, last time we won toss batted first and we made 70 in first innings at same wicket.

What does wicket looks like today? - that's more important.

Is it a seaming track, aka green mambas or more like OT kind of track?

Putting England in to bat?

Is Misbah out of his mind?

So Yasir doesn't bowl fourth.

We have never won on this ground, plus this is English GABBA, does not raise the confidence of fan base [emoji80][emoji80][emoji80]

Things are gloomy is an understatement [emoji17][emoji17][emoji17]

As expected, Sami Aslam in for Shan Masood & Sohail Khan in for Wahab Riaz.

good decision by misbah. It might be a fear of facing the England bowlers but best time to make the most of the pitch.

As Michael Vaughan has just said on TMS, this is a MASSSSSIVE RISK.

Just because there are a few clouds is absolutely NO reason to bowl first.

This is a batting track. Yes, there might be a couple of early wickets. But if they don't get at least 3 before lunch, this Test is ours (England's) before lunch on day 1.

we is bowling...mnnnh..if we are doing this then we need to attack..otherwise it will be OT part two..

Cook indicates he would have batted first. Would not have said that if he lost the last match

Sohail Khan with a test average of 245.

Well, that can only go down and he couldn't ask for a better pitch than this.

Pakistan will mentally lose the match today if they don't manage to take 10 English wickets today.

Masood out for Aslam, Wahab out for Khan. Was hoping they'd stick with Wahab for another test because of his pace but he's not unlucky to miss out after how he's bowled.

Bowling first isn't the best decision when one of four bowlers would've benefited from bowling 2nd/4th innings but the sky and the pitch should help the pacemen.

C'mon Amir!
