What's new

England v Pakistan | 3rd Test | Birmingham | Aug 3-7, 2016 | Day 1

man, your damned if you do damned if you dont..batting second may keep us in this game..getting blown away in the first hour may not have..

ok...time for predictions. I expect England to be 2 down by lunch.

I don't mind the changes though I think Azhar could've opened and Rizwan should've been brought in. Rahat will be better than Wahab at edgbaston. Wonder who will get the new ball. Amir and Sohail?

Pakistan will mentally lose the match today if they don't manage to take 10 English wickets today.

We need atleast 3 if not four before lunch, including both double O's otherwise OT part 2 [emoji45][emoji45][emoji45]

Amir and Rahat.

yes, it is a defensive move. He is hoping that the demons in the pitch (and in their minds) will be gone even if England score 500 runs. His decision is based on chasing a win but giving himself the best chance to draw if things go wrong.

I suspect one of their weak-links - Hales, Vince, Ballance etc. will score big in this innings.

To justify this decision Pakistan need to get minimum 3 wickets but ideally 4 before Lunch.

Anything less and Pakistan will be in trouble.

The bowlers have to be on the money, they have to deliver.

Credit were credit is due Mr Misbah ul Haq!

Right decision according to weather conditions and whatever will be wil be!

Cook just playing mind games here and trying to put pressure on pakistan bowlers.

We cant afford to waste the new ball here, god knows why Rahat is still in the team, both him and wahab should have been dropped.

Time for us to do some damage and have england bowled out by end of the day at the latest.

Lets see how many catches the slip cordon drops before going out to bat and score torturing 20s and 30s.

yes a defensive move..he can look to slow the game down and at least this gives his team a chance to save the game if required..getting blown away first up may have ended everything early..looks like batting on day three may be a bit easier so I can understand where he is coming from...batting first would have been the riskier decision in our case...

I suspect that if Amir fails to deliver today, even his loyalists will begin to question his abilities.

Probably worried about what Jimmy did against Australia last year.

Will need to bowl out Eng under 250, otherwise Its a bad decision.

Weather is worse for tomorrow

Not to sure, every commentator saying they would've bat first and Cook saying he wanted to bat first.

Just hoping here that our bowlers pitch it fuller this time. Idk why they are so keen on bowling shorter of good length that too outside off stump. Should get it right this time.

Let me be brave and proclaim that I am delighted at Steven Finn's inclusion in the team. Him and Moin are the scoring opportunities.

Amir can be mighty effective if Sohail opens bowling with him... It's not easy for batsmen to adjust against left-right bowling combo, especially if there is something in the pitch for bowlers...

Amir has had a poor Test series by now (although he has bowled some good spells). It's probably the best chance for him to shine and make pre-lunch session his own.

If Cook and Root get out cheaply, England will settle for a par-type score, i.e. 300 odd, because they won't mind bowling tomorrow morning given the forecast.

Problem is we know our batting, which can't survive under such cloudy conditions. So that's why i would say Misbah decision is good.

As Michael Vaughan has just said on TMS, this is a MASSSSSIVE RISK.

Just because there are a few clouds is absolutely NO reason to bowl first.

This is a batting track. Yes, there might be a couple of early wickets. But if they don't get at least 3 before lunch, this Test is ours (England's) before lunch on day 1.

Good evening.

I think, it's a good decision - not for the wicket, but for the overcast condition. Batting first PAK might have gone to lunch 6 down. The weather forecast says, 1st 2 days of cloud, therefore ideally PAK should look to bowl tight & get ENG all-out early morning tomorrow for anything less than 300. There after, batting must be easy, going by the recent FC scores.

Once Ian Chappel said that you put someone in, on a 1st morning of a 5 Day Test, you have to take 3, to be at per. Anything less than that, you have lost the initiative. I do agree with him.

I think, 2 key for PAK here is making use of the new ball - make them play as much as possible & over rate - PAK must bowl as many overs as possible in morning session. There is no point inserting ENG in & then bowl 23 overs in the morning session.

How many catches do you think PAK is going to drop in 1st session? Because to me, that's going to be the key - if PAK can get ENG 2 down in 1st hour, ENG's middle order would be tested, big time.

What would your bowling attack be then?

Amir is the best we have at the moment.

Need a big performance today from him- needs to rip out the top order with the others and get them 6 down by lunch.
Im being serious.
Bowling first is the optimal decision only for today. Misbah was worried about batting first because he knows with our top order as it is we could have been 60-5 by lunch and that is the only reason he has batted first.
In a test match it is normal to give the first session to the bowlers by being extra watchful.

Optimal decision for the game duration would have been to bat first and see out first 30 overs like a normal test match. Misbah didn't want to take that risk so Aamir and Co need to come seriously good.

And no flipping dropped catches please!

Amir is due some luck. I wouldn't be surprised if he gets a few wkts today.

Hope it is a start stop day so that there are only 60 overs and the quicks can have regular rest, and we don't have to use Shah as much.
165 all out please

The bowlers have to be on the money, they have to deliver.

Pakistan should bowl England out very cheaply in first innings if they want to win here and i reckon it should not be more than 200 runs . Anything around or more than 250 Pakistan will be in trouble.

Infact when 4 of your top order are struggling seriously it is very difficult to hope for a win in a test match against a top test side.I am just hoping a fighting loss for Pakistan, not like that cowardly surrender at old Trafford

I didn't say he should be dropped, but that doesn't make him beyond criticism.

He needs to step up to justify the hype. Today is the day.

TMS commentators getting nervous. bit of humidity in the air...

They have got to make the batsman play, make them drive. 4 slips.

This is a probably the most crucial session for both teams. Could decide the series.

In my experience there's a bit less movement at Edgbaston from the moment that cloud cover turns into drizzle. The ball just gets damp and hard to move.

And Misbah has only given him 3, so he's bowling too straight.

we have to bowl well..keep it tight, play on their insecurities..hales is ripe for removal and we then need to attack Root..get him out..

Overcast conditons and a bit of grass in the pitch. This is the best chance for Pak to take the advantage and get Eng all out at lesser possible score. Someone need to take the initiative to collapse the Eng batting here and get them under 200.

If this was Pak batting, most likely Eng would have knocked them at 100.

Star Sports is not telecasting the match. Whats the reason ?

The grass is brown. There's nothing to make it move off the seam.

Sohail Khan another bang it in the pitch bowler. Needs to go pitch further up to get some swing.

Not much swing for sohail a bit there for amir

Need to give england no easy runs here early on, Sohail does need to pitch the ball up here though and allow ball to swing.

sher khan is being watched by england..once they realise he isnt swinging it he may get clattered a bit..
