What's new

England v Pakistan | 3rd Test | Birmingham | Aug 3-7, 2016 | Day 1

An even session , batting is looking easy now. It will be harder to get wickets in the second session.

We're extremely lucky to have taken these 3 wickets and I say that as Brums finest specimen and a big supporter of the Warwickshire Bears given my understanding of the Edgbaston ground but it doesn't take a genius to make sense of the pitch this morning. So Junaids, which side of the bed did you wake up this morning? was it the blue side or the green side :yk

I've said all along, I want England to win The Oval Test by 1 wicket to take the series 2-1. On the fifth afternoon, with three balls left!

Probably PAK's session.

ENG did get 100 runs for 3, which should have made it equal, but tactically, ENG has lost half their batting, for that PAK can think of it like 90/4 session.

Who ever wins the 2nd session, 'll have a major lead in this Test. Ideally, ENG would like to finish 188/4, PAK 170/6.

Pakistan need to be aiming to get england out for less then 250 here. We need to really bowl with better control in 2nd session.

:))) what if Pakistan are in a position to win in a similar manner?

After 1st session

Considering the bowling conditions and the number of wickets it's 55-45 for Pakistan.

But taking into account that batsmen who are back in the pavilion it has to be 65-35 for Pakistan.

A score of anything below 250 is not going to trouble Pakistan. We need to keep the scoreboard ticking like they are doing now instead of tuk tuk.

Boss, can't you stop predicting. It's becoming boring every time you predict & I need to come back. Just enjoy the game - why bother to post what you like to happen rather than what logic tells.

This wicket should get a bit faster on Day 2, so - ideally PAK should look to finish the day 270/8, so that 1st hour of Day 2, they can get ENG all-out below 300 & bat for the best 2 days, which is a perfect decision from Misbah. Here your disliking of the Man is taking better of you - just like that 560 or innings defeat staff at Lord's.

Batting first or second has very little on a standard Test wicket as long as you are doing the basics correct. If Rahat & Amir bowled similarly like Sohail, England could have gone to Lunch 6 down & same could have been true for Jimmy, Berbi & Finn. Test cricket batting is all-time lowest level, at least for the last 70 years that I have seen some how.

Just enjoy the game.

But that wasn't a prediction! :)

I just don't think this Pakistan team can get much above 500 runs in a Test outside Asia.

This pitch has no live grass and is slower and less bouncy than Old Trafford. So Hafeez, Azhar and Younis might score some runs. But I can't imagine them getting more than 600 in the match. I just can't.

Lunch verdict:

1) Cook and Root are out in the first session so I can't ask for more there. I think having the right-armer Sohail has made a big difference. Like a right-left batting combination can disturb the fielding side, having that variety in your bowling attack can disturb the batsman's concentration. At Manchester, England's batsmen easily adjusted to the left-arm angle from our three seamers.

2) Still too many looseners. In England you have to bowl a fuller length. Look at how England dismissed Australia for 136 and 60 last year in the Ashes - fuller length, getting a bit of movement and the Australian batsmen were nicking off for fun. Whereas we were too short this morning, and at times too straight.

3) Amir was disappointing, however in his last over was just starting to get his length right. Otherwise he lacked patience, instead of sticking to that 4th/5th stump channel and keep tempting the batsman, he wanted to get the wicket-taking delivery with every ball. He bowled too straight at times and was easy for batsmen to play off their pads at times.

4) Misbah was under pressure after sticking England in first. The pitch looked dry and there's been some sunny spells this morning. When you bowl first, you want at least 3 wickets in the opening session and we got it. If we can dismiss these for around 250 I'd be pleased.

Bowling first you have to knock them over for under 250. One more wicket would have been pak morning but we have only bowled well in patches Without Root and Cook at the crease the pak bowlers need to maintain the pressure, Wickets will come.

I will be slightly disappointed from a nationalist point of view, then secretly rather pleased at a team I like doing well.

And then I'll go on a massive rant against Andrew Strauss, comprehensive schools, southern softies and Ant and Dec.

Cricket is stronger when Pakistan is a strong team that is not relegated to the margins of world cricket. I don't care much who wins, so long as the ECB sees fit to give Pakistan regular tours.

Need to go bang bang in the next session. Should get them to atleast 150 for 5

If only pakistani bowlers could find the right line and length . They woulf be all over England .
Years of bowling in the UAE perhaps ?? They have ths ability to bowl good deliveries but are too impatient or just lack control.

I have noticed one thing amir looks rubbish with the new ball but his second spell is better ...whats with that?

Shouldn't you be supporting Australia, failed the Tebbit test

The majority on here still think you're a Pakistani :)) I know you're white though aha and a supporter of England as much as you love Pak to. To be honest many of my white friends in birmingham and especially the older club cricket mates are big fans of Pakistan. Beyond how good and flamboyant the team of old was I think it's mainly due to the county cricket scene filled with Pakistani talent in those days!! many speak fondly of those memories.

Strauss has done a decent job now to be fair he is starting win me over a bit even though am still disappointing with how he buried KP and twisted the knife in his back before letting him go :))

Made an effort to watch it unlike the Imran Khan interview as there's nothing more to add regarding his illustrious career or his political ambitions

Amirs careers on line

He needs to get wickets.

O bhai jazbaati mat ho..every one experiences bat patches through out his career thats what amir is suffering ...he has still got it because the spell vs Nz in 3rd ODI in late january has forced me to belive that and unlike spell vs india it came on a flat pitch on which even we got 280+
Amir will be fine he will get 3 wickets in this innings
Amir will be at his best in the test series in NZ atm he is rusty and a bit unlucky too

Allah mian 200 pe out kara deehh.. pleaseeeeeee :59:

Amir has to improve if we have to get anywhere in this test

Amir is a full FC season away from being to his potential best- needs to play county or shield/grade cricket and get some games under his belt

Any drops or lulloo decisions so far?

surprisingly no drops as of yet !! Although Mubarakbads are in order since Hafeez held on to a catch at slips and that too of Root :O

However, umpiring as far as decision making goes is spot on, but their consistent pathetic whining of the danger zone from Rahat is really annoying :livid: - Rahat isn't even remotely close to the danger zone yet !!!

Nasser and Warne (in the combox) tore into the on field umpires for bashing Rahat for absolutely nothing..

I TOTALLY fail the Tebbit test.

Most of us Poms who live in Australia are complete hypocrites like me. We slam immigrants from other cultures who don't integrate or assimilate, but we don't actually change one little bit ourselves: because 90% of our culture is shared between England, Australia and New Zealand we don't stick out as aliens.

I lived my first 25 years in England then several more in New Zealand, where I could maintain my pantomime-style hatred of Australian sporting teams. So they are still the team I love to hate.

I basically support anyone who is playing against Australia, except for India. But having said that, because I live in Australia and have a kid who plays cricket, I am secretly really fond of several Aussie cricketers - especially Mitch Johnson and Shane Watson who have just departed the scene but also Pat Cummins who I think is everything that Mitchell Starc is not. Apart from fit.

As for today, I think it's pretty even-stevens.

It's really good to watch. I'm having a lot of fun.

The thing is if we don't get them out under 225 we have very little chance to win with our batting.

Fair enough and respect.

Real nice to hear, Junaid.

Sohail shoud have played from game one. He is naturally seam and swing bowler. Would have made an impact better than wahab. What is gone wrong with Mohd Amir. Hope he recovers from the slump, hopefully he can make impact in this game still. Looked tired and out of ideas.

Not too many things more frustrating than having batsmen with techniques like Ballance score runs against you. :fawad

They have already scored 14 runs after lunch..

He's a decent player with a great temperament, nothing too wrong with him technically. Vince on the other hand is a natural stroke player who can't resist a few outside off stump but he's batting really well at the moment and leaving everything outside off

Having a look at the Sky team's analysis of his technique. Apparently he's improved. :sanga

This what you get when you bowl two spray guns in tandem.. Thank you Misbah

Rahat Ali with his usual garbage.. how does this guy keep getting a spot in the side?

He's made a couple of minuscule changes after looking dreadful in that ashes series, always expected him to be back. He's one of their best on the county scene. Amir is a little off colour today but think we should give him a little burst to really have a go at ballance with the short ball, yasir won't be a bad option either.

England not getting bogged down even though they lost their two best batsman for less than 100 runs on the board.

Now imagine what our batsmen would do in a situation like this.

As Nasser Hussain pointed out, need to soften up Balance. Time for Amir to bring on some chin music and Yasir to use some spin music.

Mickey Arthur's words will come back to haunt us.
