What's new

England v Pakistan | 3rd Test | Birmingham | Aug 3-7, 2016 | Day 1

Pitch seems decent for batting if you can get past the new ball. Need to dismiss England quickly and take advantage.

All of you are missing the key point here - what is conclusive in Cricket?

I am given LBW on something that pitched 51% with in line, 3rd Umpire 'll keep that. I am not given out for anything 49% within line, the call'll remain Not Out. Same for catches or any other form of dismissal.

Then they limit the DRS options - a mockery that was exposed in Kandy Test. Angelo went for couple of close calls, which could have easily given out & Aussies would have wasted Reviews (if they had any). Then Umpire makes a howler & whole stadium/world could see that - but the DRS policy doesn't allow to rectify that & had rain came couple of hours earlier at Kandy that day ........... you know.

I keep repeating that, DRS should be kept with Umpires. These days, 90% decisions remains with Umpires & many of them ends as one side being upset - take out the DRS appeal, whatever is given by Field Umpire should stand & player would accept that as part of the game. If the Umpire (both on field or 3rd Umpire) is not sure, or can notice a gross mistake - field umpire can cross check or even can call back the batsman (or give him out) before batsman leaves the field or the next ball is bowled.

They are calling back batsman being dismissed of an un-called No Ball.
Excellent post but I think they tried it in early 2000s but it didn't work out that well.

Hope we bat more than two sessions after the england innings , Sohail khan will be very sore tomorrow.

Let's wrap this innings up now. Keep Finn and then Anderson on strike.

I am not sure - can't recall if DRS was ever with Umpire entirely.

lol enough of this, it's not about the lbw, that's all fair enough

but the ball smothers the glove after the pad. anybody on sky can rewind and see for themselves, as the coverage is paying no attention

\Before using LOL, try to read the post & if you don't understand yet, ask question. I also saw the replay & can't say that it was an inside edge - so, the decision might stay with PAK - does it mean it was a correct decision?

I think it was the champions trophy (mini world cup known then ) in Bangladesh or Kenya ..

Sohail's bowling performance reminds me of Tanvir Ahmed. Similar physique. similar skillset , similar pace and what's the most standout thing common between the two is The Grunt! :tanvir

But Tanvir Ahmed was a great batsman. Can Sohail bat like him?

When you send the other team in, you don't want them to be getting any more than 280 so content with these bowling effort though there have been too many freebies at times.

Pakistan should bowl all balls outside off stump and take the last wicket off the final ball of the 90th over. Batting right now wont be fun

If Amir gets Anderson, Sohail Khan should feel cheated.

Sohail did all the hard work and Amir is stealing easy ones.

Everyone will say it's only the tail Amir has been dismissed but England bat deep so glad someone is dismissing them.

Only 8 overs remaining for today.... U know... What do i mean...

We could have bowled better and got England out for under 250 but if we get them out for under 300 that will be a good days work.

Sohail has the ability to hold the bat. Even Tanvir wasn't really classed as an Allrounder when he burst onto the scene. We really got to know about his batting abilities when he played his first innings in test cricket.

Hopefully Sohail also emulates Tanvir in batting.

Restricting pommies under 300 is still not bad. However, they've made extra 18 runs so far.

Should Pakistan be sending a night watch man (not Rahat) e.g. Yasir Shah to survive against 3-4 overs, if Pakistan gets to bat...

Yeah he cd hit some lusty blows but I think sohail is a superior bowler to him. He should hv played all 4 tests.

May be, but that time technology wasn't that robust. Now, it's possible to make 99% accurate prediction.

I think, now it can be better used by keeping with Umpires than with players. Most cases teams take a chance with DRS. There are 3 fundamental confusion in cricket - 1. for LBW - if it's an inside Edge, if it has pitched out side leg & if it's stuck out side the line. 2. For Caught behinds - if it's edge or bat hitting some thing; 3. for close catch if it's bat/gloves/Pad or only Pad. Above a certain level it's never conclusive, therefore still the decision should be with Umpire - what his judgement tells. For that he can ask for assistance.
