What's new

England v Pakistan | 4th Test | The Oval | Aug 11-15, 2016 | Day 3

They didn't pick anyone who wasn't from Yorkshire! The legendary TV interviewer Michael Parkinson like many Yorkshiremen living outside the county drove his wife back from London to Leeds just to give birth, just in case. Because otherwise a son would have been ineligible to play for Yorkshire.

My mum's from Yorkshire, but she took no such precautions - I was born in Lancashire.

Even Michael Vaughan was quite a shocking recruit for them, because he was born in Lancashire.

This nonsense was surprisingly common in British sport. In Glasgow, Celtic used to refuse to employ Protestant players and Rangers used to refuse to pick Catholics. And at the recent Euros, the Republic of Ireland football team contained several Northern Irish players who didn't want to play for their own country because they identify as Catholics first, Northern Irish last!

Thanks for explaining. This is weird to see and we always thought stuff like this only happens in SC countries :yk we had a huge karachi v lahore cricket lobby back in 70s and 80s but it's almost dead now.

no cheap tickets like big bash? last season big bash had a 80,000+ crowd in a normal match wasn't even a KO match

Tickets for kids are £5 at most grounds I think, £20 probably about standard for an adult. Most clubs will do very affordable membership for kids generally at most about £35 for entry to every county game in all formats across the season.

Over here we obviously don't have an 80,000 capacity ground but the 2 London derbies will sell out the oval and lords with 25,000, not sure if the roses games do but they will surely get close if not.

Yes, but that really doesn't count.

Firstly, Big Bash makes no money from gate receipts because they virtually give the tickets away.

Secondly as I've written before, Big Bash occupies a very specific social niche in Australia. Everyone is either on summer holidays or working massively less intense days. And so Dad takes the kids to the Big Bash so that Mum can go out with her girlfriends and get drunk and disorderly. Everyone's a winner by the end of the night.

Plus, don't forget, that most of the Big Bash cities have virtually nothing to do of a summer evening apart from cricket, grog, or both.

Heard Saqi a couple of time and he mentioned how trend is changing now in England and youngsters are more interested in shorter format so ECB also realized it and is investing in it. (the famous over coaching and text book coaching is also removed by ECB and counties)

but the things is at least they are some how managing to fill the stadiums and that will help to keep the youngsters interested in the game although Australia is a county with many sports so the excuse shouldn't be used for home of cricket (England) that more kids are going away from cricket because of other sports.

Wow episode 1 of Coke Studio Season 9 released a few minutes so enjoying it while watching the cricket!

Very true, but that's a different story.

In England, cricket is no longer shown on Free-To-Air TV, so most kids never watch it. Ever. It's a mystery to them like Polo or Tennis or Golf.

In Australia all home international cricket is on Free-To-Air TV and so is the Big Bash. Cricket Australia get much less money for the TV rights, but know that EVERY male and almost every female watches it.

I got an SMS from a middle-aged female nurse who is a friend of mine an hour ago about an absurd catch that Shaun Marsh tried to claim in the Colombo Test.

But because the TV coverage in England is hidden away, there is no such interest there. Over 90% of males aged 15-30 apparently watch neither Test, ODI or even T20 cricket in England now.

And heard that Sky charge just too much extra money if you want to open the sports channels just for 1 month to watch a series. Even in India cricket isn't on FTA anymore but still Star charge very less so that general public can access it. Thanks GOD in Pakistan it's still FTA for all home/away series of Pak and even for Ashes and all other major series/tournaments otherwise cricket will die just like hockey/squash here because we didn't promoted them.

A bit of resistance by the batsmen right now should be normal, we're going to go into the tail if we lose a wicket, need to make sure we build a healthy lead.

Vince isn't scoring as many runs as he'd like but absolutely terrific in the field

Wake up lads bit quiet here

Am always awake brother!

Hope safraz does not get impatient failed to find the gaps a couple of times.

It's an easy pitch, although there's a little swing in the air.

The outcome of this Test hangs on the concentration and self-discipline of Younis Khan and Sarfraz Ahmed.

If they sell their wickets dearly, you get a big lead. But if they don't, Cook will set you a big target.

Sarfraz would have scored 60 runs by now were it not for Vincent Kennedy McMahon

Pakistan on a roll.

Whats the situation reg the pitch?

This is gonna break today or tomorrow?

Overcast conditions and the ball is doing a bit but England bowlers lengths are not quiet right, bowl jaffas here and there but also overpitch or bowl wide allowing batsman to smash a boundary. Danger man Woakes is on now.

It will break a little today but not too much, but the conditions for the seamers are pretty decent today; doubt the sun will be out as much

I thought it was suppose to be sunny today, where did this cloud cover come from.

I really hope Younis Khan gets a double and Sarfaraz at least gets his century!

We need 150 run more lead. YK needs 150 and Sarfraz needs a century. We also need our tail to wag a few 20s and 30s willl do nicely

A big deal and England will crumble on its own weight.

100 run lead and Eng can manage before the pitch crumbles (if it does).

My stream not working now. lol.

Need to keep England bowlers out here for as long as possible. They ran our attack in yo the ground in the last game. Need to do the same here as we want them as tired as possible for the last innings

Knowing how powerful England's batting is, pak will need a lead of 200 minimum to put them under pressure imo just look how they wiped out the deficit in the last Test and we had a lead of 100 ! 200 will be really tough and unlikely

Not too bad so far, looks to be quite a threatening partnership if it builds up over a certain time

England hasn't looked like a team which takes any pressure at least in this series.

This is different.

Eng wouldn't want more than 100 run lead.

Unless of course, the pitch is deadish (by English standards) where runs can be scored at will in which case, they may try to rack up a big score and go for a draw.

All you have to do is Boolieve!!!!!!!

Need 100 more from these two and we are in pretty good position.

The only thing I'm concerned about is the lead we'll finish with, Eng have managed to gun down our lead in the previous Tests and we really need to build a good platform from here.

On the flipside, England are just 1 wicket away from running through this lineup.

So this is the moment where the game hangs in balance.

The now-dead grass will hold it together.

I don't expect much spin at all, or at least not before Day 5.

We're less than halfway through the match. It's quite similar to Pakistan's drawn 708 Test in 1987.
