These two looking ominous, India look set for a good score here. England will probably rue this decision to bowl first.

We missed a second spinner in 1st match, hopefully its not the same here!

114-3; decent going by these two.. but the ball is swinging and its not easy out there

Thankfully our batsmen didn't hear to Shastri's ugly comments and batted at better strike rate (including Pujara!) Otherwise 90/3 or 100/3 (it would easily have induced to 100/4 or 100/5 with the score board pressure) It would be so uncomfortable to deal with! With 155 on board, the batsmen can play with a calm & positive mood!

Do not judge the pitch. Ashwin will eat Cook, Jennings, Stokes alive and a couple of right handers

The key for Root is not to lose patience with Rashid because he is bowling some long hops on Day 1. That being said he needs to be taken off here as he is leaking a lot of runs. You need to be very accurate as a leg-spinner to merit a long spell on the first day of a test in England.

England need India 5 down before 200 if they want to stand a chance in this test. India is running away with it. English batting will collapse twice if India score 350.

Jinxing ka badshah Syed1 bhai!!!!

350 is the par score. England might score 450 in their 1st innings.

India must take 20 wickets as well.

Until both teams bat game is even

100 run partnership...amazing. this means I have to wait more for Pant to bat..but whatever...this is entertaining

England missing Sam Curran. He adds variety to the attack and India generally struggle with the left arm angle.

Dheka Jani issay khetay hain Pawwa :)) Syed1

We would like to know what strings BCCI pulled to get an Asian track?! :srini

Perfect pitch for the IPL bully, Jos Buttler to hit a test century and cement his spot for a few more tests.

Excellent session, we have to make it count.

Keep in mind that the pitch will be flat for England as well.

So we should aim to rope in scoreboard pressure as a 12th man.

Maybe 400 will do that for us.

Kohli is class. Few teams put everything on one player. If he falters, most of the time, India fail. Sad because India has batting talent, but their temperament and patience seems lacking these days.

Pujara has been a huge disappointment. I think the injuries have taken their toll. He was looking to be the 1-2 with Kohli in the middle a few years ago.

Root messed up here by opting to bowl. He should have batted first. Having said that, there is a 25% prediction that rain may come on 2nd day of the test and if conditions are overcast, India can really make sure that they get England out to a silly score and get a 100+ lead.

England did the right decision to bowl. Overcast conditions, india under pressure. We are forgetting that India is here to play and not make numbers. You expect them to fight back.

Rahane is way better to bat with Kohli than Pujara.

Pujara just stalls the innings.

Finally, the Indian batting lineup has arrived in England.

Good to see Rahane back among the runs. I hope he makes a century here. Kohli, well, is doing a Kohli as usual.

Given how this pitch is, I really think they should have retained Kuldeep. Two spinners may be useful here .

No cloud cover. Sun is shining and England attack looks very average.

Andrew Strauss's weather machine has seemingly malfunctioned.

No seriously, better application from IND batsmen Pujara aside.

Conditions were overcast only in first session. The sun was out after that and the pitch had flattened completely with a few ball being an exception.

Ofcourse, as a captain, you should have opted to bat because once you go through the initial phase, it is quite easy as it can be seen by the two.

England have to bat last , India now has has ingredients , if they mix them well they should win this test

For India, these two have to bat time and bat big. Key to winning the test will be to wear down the pitch.

If England bat for most of tomorrow and Day 3, they will score 400/500+

Thats why India need to keep going until deep into Day 2. After Kohli and Rahane, the rest of the batting looks frail. Pant on debut, Pandya, Ashwin and then 3 no 11s.

350 is par, India need 400/450+ at least to have a chance of getting a positive result, or at the very least, not losing the test.

India well set now. England are beginning to get mildly pasted by this pair.

Rashid was always going to be a hopeless selection in these anti-legspin conditions. His spell was abysmal.

Curran should have played.

And England, who won the toss, should have batted.

Weather looks fairly good for the whole match, so we could be in for a high scoring five day job here.

Glad that even a Yorkshireman can admit how wrong he was!

Just tuning in, what were the conditions like this morning? looks like the top order blunted the new ball quiet well or well enough for the likes of Kohli and Rahane to get their eye in

I wonder if Root is regretting his decision to put us in to bat.

England are getting thrashed. The problem with England’s batting is that none of the batsmen has appetite for runs apart from cook and root.’ashwin will take care of cook while root will go after a 50

17 runs off woake's over. :D ..dry weather isn't helping duke balls.

Kohli - roll up your sleeves to bat with the tail soon.

End of a great innings from Rahane, fantastic catch by Cook. Just switched to the match after the football ended and what luck :D

Eng can now aim for keeping Indians around 300 runs.

And Rahane is gone....

Sad that he had to get out like this after working so hard...

Anyway, time for Pant to show his mettle here. He should seize the golden opportunity.

Correction: Pandya not Pant, yet

I said in the prematch thread that Rashid should have sat out this match.

You had different views before that and actually thought he was making a positive contribution due to a couple of cheap wickets and 20 odd runs or so lol

Pandya might actually like this scenario.

Doubt it's one he has ever been in - with runs on the board. Most times we are in a crisis.

Kohli is looking solid. If he stays, he can grab the game by the scruff of its neck quickly.

Pandya has no idea how to get off the strike!

HE cashed in on the conditions. No cloud cover and perfect batting conditions. Even then, he had some streaky edges initially. Dhawan would have destroyed English bowling green if he had the same conditions.

They should have sent in Pant instead of Pandya. Batting alongside a set and in-form Kohli would have been really useful for this first test innings.
