If Australia hold their own with the bat we're in for a competitive Ashes series. Root and Compton look like utter toss, and with the ultimate bottler Bell in the middle order it'll be down to Trott/Cook/Pietersen to score 90% of the Poms' runs.

i felt asleep watching them bat :inzi

everyone is batting at a snail's pace

excellent bowling by the kiwis though.

All depends on how NZ bat in first innings , if they can score 400 runs , this will be a draw.

NZ quicks keeping things tight. RR under 2 now :hadlee Deserves a couple more wickets though.

Slow wicket, overcast, pretty good swing bowlers. The run rate is not going to be high.

Root is a brilliant young talent. You are so short sighted.

What a joke of a day and then some wonder why people are losing interest in test cricket.

If Test Cricket dies, I will blame it on Cook, Bell and company.

This is the reason people are losing interest in Test Cricket.

this is Test cricket if you want adrenaline switch channels and tune in to the IPL. Its tough conditions out there. Which is what Test cricket is all about.

I'd rather watch attritional cricket than watch Sewahg slog on the roads of the subcontinent, thats not cricket in my opinion.

test cricket is test of patience about temperament...Cloudy conditions and slow pitch is helpful to bowlers that os why they are playing slow

I think England wil bat out Day 2 and score 350

I concur. After the dull middle order players bore and frustrate the Kiwi bowlers into depression, Prior will come in and feast on the tired souls and score an 80 ball hundred with the Poms going on over how he is second only to Gilchrist :kapil

You have opened my eyes brother :moyo

You made me realize how Prior does it? :afridi

Respect :imran

Not very clever losing a wicket before the 2nd new ball. NZ are in total control here. Whats the weather forecast for the remaining four days and tomorrow?

Slow going for England. A touch troublesome, but no major alarm bells.

He is by no means fast, he's as fast as Vinay Kumar. Steven Finn is the fastest English bowler.

Anyway, England won the toss and decided to bat first.

He bowls 84 or so consistently, he's hardly as slow as Vinay. He sacrifices speed for control.

Was Jimmy threatening when he used to be fast? :akhtar

I have never seen him bowling at 90 mph

He used to be pretty pacey when he was younger. And sure he was threatening... And then clattered for four. He was dreadfully inconsistent and would alternate between woeful and magic balls.

Gonna be a cloudy Test match, if we get to 280 that might be useful.

I reckon Johnny and Matty and speed it up a bit tomorrow.

Prior? Wonder if he rates higher than Bradley Wade or whatever headless hybrid oven-gloveman the Aussies are fielding these days.

I know it's tests but if England play like this in the test championship, the response won't be pretty. Sure, it's a game where some days, the team plays slowly. But this was pure attrition. Utter boredom. Hope our comedy performance against swing bowling could spruce up this test a bit.

I don't expect our bowlers to be great right now. Bresnan is the only one in seemingly good form in County right now. Broad and Anderson are still half-baked.

Yawnathon! Matty Prior should strongly disagree with this and move the bloody game please.

For those complaining go watch t20 please. Tests are for those who are patient not ones who want to see a boundary every ball.

England to be knocked over before Tea tomorrow, for a score of around 280-300.

Fake test cricket fans are trying too hard to make it a patience of test cricket.

This was way slower for current standard. Game is at still at the moment.

30 out of 80 overs were maidens, that's like doing literally nothing.

70 pound per day was the ticket price! To do what? Sleep?

England will fall in to trap if they bat like this, they are creating the pressure rather than forced into playing such a way.

Strange to see people who aren't even watching the game making comments. England's rr is low but the slow outfield, good fielding and tight bowling is just making it seem worse than it really is perhaps these people should actually watch the game rather than read scorecards and iplinfo commentary. Strangely its the same people who have ipl dps... hmm.. Maybe these guys should replace the English batsmen and see how they do lol

No Wonder why most people consider watching grass grow or paint dry as more entertaining than watching Cricket ( Test ).

Watching Trentt Boult bowl imo is worth admission alone, the guy has a very bright future ahead of him. I'm glad we have a gem like him in our bowling line up. :)

Indeed what a gem. Amazing record he has :sami

There was a reason that test matches were not played in May in England.

Got injured in the test series and was the second best fast bowler in the ODI series after Irfan and better than Steyn :akhtar
More accuses, he was hyped to the moon by fans for the series and he disappointed when he did play in the tests.

Compare the record of Boult and Junaid please I dare you. :ajmal

Boult is a homeless man's Junaid at best.

Junaid has 3 five wicket hauls already in 9 matches and all that on roads of SC :kapil

This new NZ Pace attack is very good.
Swung the ball nicely yesterday but were a bit off target initially though.

And Martin seems like a decent spinner, much better than the useless Jeetan Patel.

Root is a brilliant young talent. You are so short sighted.

He is a hack, he's a fisherman in the same class as Yasir Hameed.

I knew I forgot someone :butt

I actually think these Ashes will be a decent contest.

People who complaining about Test cricket are annoying. The ironic thing is some of them even love golf. Which takes about 7 hours as well.
Why does nobody ever complain? Because Americans like it? How popular would it be without them for that matter?

Now thats what you call boring. No way is watching a ball swing with 3 slips and a gully boring never!, thats mouth watering stuff.
