England made good on their tags as favourites at this ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup with a crushing win against South Africa. In contrast, Pakistan lost their 11th straight one-day international when they were blasted apart by West Indies in their opening match.

Overview:

England v Pakistan

Trent Bridge, Nottingham
ICC Cricket World Cup, Match 6
Monday, 3 June: 10:30am local time, 9:30am GMT

England will be feeling very confident against Pakistan in this match having soundly beaten them 4-0 in the ODI series before this tournament got underway. With Ben Stokes getting runs, wickets and spectacular catches, and Eoin Morgan, Jason Roy and Joe Root also making fifties they will be thinking they can repeat the results of the very recent past.

For Pakistan, there are some serious question marks. Against the West Indies they were battered and bruised by the short ball, with Andre Russell and Oshane Thomas both having them hopping around. With England likely to play Liam Plunkett, Jofra Archer and potentially Mark Wood, there will be a good chance that a number of short balls at very decent pace will be heading their way.

In the past, it has been the Pakistan's bowling attack that has made up for batting shortfalls but in that ODI series against England last month, they ended up conceding more than 340 four times in a row. Against the West Indies, an albeit, small total was chased down inside 14 overs. More is needed from their attack if they are to turn things around.

Key players

Adil Rashid (England): No bowler has taken more wickets in ODIs since the last World Cup than Adil Rashid. He has seven four-wicket hauls and two five-fors. Wickets in the middle overs are so important in modern ODI cricket, and Rashid provides just that. If he ends up towards the top of the wicket-taking charts at the end of this tournament, England will have gone a long way to winning it.

Shadab Khan (Pakistan): Pakistan have a leg-spinner of their own and his job will be to take wickets once the second PowerPlay gets underway. Shadab is not a big turner of the ball, but he is wily and can take wickets. He has an excellent ODI bowling average of 27.74 and an economy rate of under five an over.

Conditions

The forecast is for a cloudy but dry day in Nottingham so there may be some swing early on. The pitch at Trent Bridge is said to be amongst the most run-laden in the world cricket right now, there could be a high score here if one of these teams fires with the bat.

Squads

England: Eoin Morgan (c), Moeen Ali, Jofra Archer, Jonny Bairstow, Jos Buttler (wk), Tom Curran, Liam Dawson, Liam Plunkett, Adil Rashid, Joe Root, Jason Roy, Ben Stokes, James Vince, Chris Woakes, Mark Wood

Pakistan:Sarfaraz Ahmed (c, wk), Asif Ali, Hasan Ali, Shaheen Afridi, Mohammad Amir, Babar Azam, Mohammad Hafeez, Mohammad Hasnain, Imam-ul-Haq, Shadab Khan, Shoaib Malik, Wahab Riaz, Haris Sohail, Imad Wasim, Fakhar Zaman

Points to ponder:

England and Pakistan met in an ODI series immediately before this ICC Cricket World
Cup, England winning all four completed games in that series and scoring 340+ runs
in each match.

• The two highest team totals in ODI history have come at Trent Bridge (where this ICC
Cricket World Cup match between England and Pakistan takes place), England
posting 481/6 against Australia in 2018 and 444/3 against Pakistan in 2016.

• Pakistan come into this game on the back of recording their second lowest total in
an ICC Cricket World Cup match, scoring just 105 against the Windies at Trent Bridge
last week (74 in a N/R v England in Adelaide 1992 their lowest score).

• The last time England and Pakistan met in the ICC Cricket World Cup was in 2003 in
Cape Town, England won that match by 112 runs in large part thanks to bowling
figures of 4/29 by James Anderson.

• This will be the ninth ODI between England and Pakistan at Trent Bridge, the hosts
have won the last three such clashes with Pakistan’s last victory at the Nottingham
venue coming in 1996.

• England have managed to register wins in 16 of their last 17 completed ODI matches
played on home soil (L1); in fact, they haven’t suffered defeat when chasing in this
format in England and Wales since September 5th, 2015, a current run of 19 games
(W18 T1).

• Pakistan have lost their last 11 ODIs heading into this ICC Cricket World Cup match
with England, their longest ever losing run in this format.

• Jason Roy (England) needs eight runs to reach 3,000 ODI career runs, of the 16 other
England players to reach this milestone only three have a better average than Roy
(40.98, Buttler, Pietersen, Root) and only one has a better strike rate (106.2, Buttler
119.5).

• Chris Woakes (England) has 12 4+ wicket-hauls in ODI cricket, only James Anderson
(13) has more than him for England (Darren Gough also 12).

• England captain Eoin Morgan needs 10 runs to overtake Allan Lamb (830) as
England’s leading ODI run scorer against Pakistan, Morgan averages 54.7 against
Pakistan, his best average against any side he has faced more than five times.

Big Game, will be huge if we can win tonight otherwise it will be a long road.

Could not find a better opponent to turn things around.

Can be a nice easy victory for pak if they done their homework!
Prefably bat first and set a decent target. Not hard to do. Archer and wood are going to bowl fast bouncers at pak batsman. Pak batsman should have practiced ducking and weaving. Dont play at ANY bouncers, you are likely to get a wide for them. Thats about it for bowling, the rest of the english bowlers are rubbish. However, pak have a tendancy to give woakes a bunch of wickets. Just see of woakes, dont play at his wider deliveries and they should be fine. Post score of 330, quite easy to do on this small trent bridge pitch.

When bowling to england, bowl in the wickets, give them no room and bowl slow. Pacers should bowl at 70 - 75mph. Bowl alot of cutters. England want to play their shots, then let them generate their own pace. Sure they will hit a few sixes but they will eventually, give their wickets away. Bowl the odd quick bouncer and yorker, to suprise the batsman. No bowling back of a length, bowl a good length but not full.
The spinners should try to keep it simple and not try to take wickets. Keep it tight, no loose deliveries, frustrate the england batsman. They might hit you for a few sixes, but if they bowl tight and slow eventually, the english batsman will throw away their wickets.
Simple plan - bowl tight and good lengths. And bowl very slow( pacers 70mph, spinners 45mp), frustrate the english batsman by not giving them any width or pace. Get them to take chances and generate their own pace. They should SELF DESTRUCT!

Shaan masood would have been ideal for this game with both bat and ball!
Shaan is the best puller in pak cricket, those bouncers wouldnt have bothered him.
And shaan can bowl medium pace(70 -75mph) within the wickets.

After watching BD/SA match, got a good feeling about PAK's change of fortune today. Good luck guys!

Are they playing on the same track, or a different one? Either way, don't think it'll be prepared like the England series tracks.

According to TV reports

Shoiab malik and asif ali to come
In place of imad wasim and haris sohail

Doing the same thing over and over again, and expecting different results, lol. For example; Wahab Riaz's selection for today's game.

Haris Sohail should not be dropped at all. He is a reliable batsman. It will be a blunder to drop him.

Asif for Imad is positive, but what's the purpose of bringing Malik in? And if they don't drop Wahab then there's no way we're winning, even if we put 350+ on the board.

Good luck Pakistan! Today is the day you break that losing streak and cause a major upset.

Cricket’s version of Ruiz Jr vs Joshua. Pakistan the unfit (a few players with very similar physique won’t say who), seemingly everyone talking down about and not giving a snowball’s chance in hell vs the very much predicted champion-to-be.

A green storm is coming! Pakistan can't lose today because yours truly is enroute, Robin Hood is coming!!!

All the best everyone I give you guys a lot of stick as we are passionate fans but hope we win today

Esay pesy win for Greenshirts today, they will break many world records today.

Looking forward to see the performance of GOAT Shadab and ATG Hassan

I do fear a lot of world records will be broken today, hope that England don't bat first.

I think it’s going to be a flat belter.

Don't agree with going in with 4 front line bowlers . . You can't let one game (previous game) dictate your thinking . . you're playing a reactive game . . last 4 ODIs against england, you scored 320 on average . . your bowlers went the distance . . you need 5 front line bowlers!

We have to chase . If England field first And target is less than 350 then no chance

I like the above but Haris can bowl better than Shoaib but if Imad goes which i want anyways they need a fifth bowler

In 1992 we lost to WI and game against england it rained. I want history to repeat itself

Just had a nightmare, Pak were playing Eng in cricket game in Nottingham!!!

Worst format u can imagine; wher pak have to play every othr team... in the past they play 3 games in group format n off home after losing 3 games and finishing last to the likes of Bangladesh/Ireland... no hiding place for them this time...

Agree. You need 5 bowlers against england

Go Pakistan!!
We are hurt. Don’t care you Win or lose today you play like cornered tigers

Now a days I am seeing everybody comes up with playing 11, And the funny thing is no matter which playing 11 we are playing ,it is not making any difference.we are losing

I think World cup organizers took aid of 1992 (which was also round-robin) for scheduling the matches, so the similarities might end there!

Please stop saying that dumb cliche cornered tigers we ain’t no tigers we are mice even that 92 World Cup was a fluke followed with luck and rain etc we’ve never won a tournament with sheer dominance hence we are back base 1 staring at a first round World Cup exit.

Now after saying that all that yet my ******* is up 5:00 am to support these idiots and also watch this thread be so long despite all the fans saying we ain’t watching

Only 2 pace bowlers??? English batsmen going to murder pak spinners

It’s not a cliche. It’s a mindset. Yes these guys might not be good enough to go pass the group stage this time but still the way you show up matters, not giving up after defeat and being strong in the face of challenges matters whether it’s a small thing like a cricket match or any other challenge in life

WHY Sarfraz always lose toss
Now game gone we are batting first

I have little hope of defending against England.
And what if rain comes in play?:(

England have chosen to bowl. Wasim Akram said it was a belter. PAK need to score heavily and choke 'em with spin. It might turn a bit later.

chalo, atleast we wont be getting a 500 target

Sarfaraz never wins a toss.. Would like to know his ratio

It's a proper belter so we should get 300 but it may not be enough.

On same pitch, England almost lost while chasing 350 against Pakistan. This your esteemed chance, brothers. You have to believe....

Like we could ever chase England's total if they batted first...maybe losing first is a blessing in disguise...

Looking at the pitch and England batting, Pakistan should definitely play 5 bowlers. It gives captain an extra option if one bowler has an off day. May the best team wins.

Our bowling looks weak, hafeez/shoaib bowling on this pitch looks bad decision.

Jab waqt bura chal raha ho tu toss b dhoka de jata hai,,, but only consolation is we won't getting world record phainty, Baqi I want them to give their best baqi Jo Manzoor khuda, victory and loss is part of the game but Atleast go down fighting and all guns blazing and show you belong.

no haris and imam

both hafeez ad malik playing

and asif aswell
