Pakistan will reach out to the G20 countries particularly with which it has close ties in an attempt to stop India from holding any event or meeting of the grouping in the Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).

India is planning to host certain events of G20 in the disputed territory when it will host the summit meeting next year.

India is set to assume the presidency of G20 in December this year.

India is part of the G20 grouping comprising major economies of the world including Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Germany, France, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Turkey, the United Kingdom and the United States.

While Pakistan has already rejected the Indian move, official sources told The Express Tribune on Sunday that Islamabad would reach out to G20 countries on the issue.

Sources said Pakistan would particularly approach countries like China, Turkey and Saudi Arabia to convey them their concerns.

Islamabad would also speak to the US, the UK and other G20 members in order to counter Indian plans.
Sources said India through hosting such events in the disputed territory is trying to portray normalcy in the disputed territory.

The ground situation, however, is quite contrary to the Indian claims as authorities in the disputed territory are involved in grave human rights abuses, according to the sources.

Since the change of government in Islamabad, there were some hopes of de-escalation in tensions. But such moves by India could undermine those efforts, as per sources.

Indian National Security Advisor Ajit Doval also dashed hopes of any re-engagement when he insisted that New Delhi would talk to Pakistan on its terms, a statement that did not go down well in Islamabad.

If India succeeds, this will be the first international event in the disputed region since New Delhi unilaterally revoked the special status of the disputed territory on August 5, 2019. The Indian move has deepened tensions with Pakistan, which strongly dismissed the changes and termed it violation of both international laws as well as bilateral understandings between the two nuclear-armed neighbours.

In recent months, the Indian government has tried to show normalcy in the troubled region by holding investment conference from Gulf countries and is now going a step further with trying to host a G20 summit.

But the Foreign Office statement here made it clear that Pakistan would not accept such a move.

In response to media queries, FO spokesperson Asim Iftikhar on Saturday stated that Pakistan had seen news items appearing in the Indian media indicating that the government of India might be contemplating to hold some G20-related meeting/event in IIOJK. “Pakistan completely rejects any such attempt by India,” he said.

“As is well-known, Jammu and Kashmir is an internationally recognised ‘disputed’ territory between Pakistan and India. The territory has been under forcible and illegal occupation of India since 1947 and this dispute has remained on the agenda of the United Nations Security Council for over seven decades.”

The spokesperson noted that India was responsible for widespread atrocities and egregious human rights violations in IIOJK. Since illegal and unilateral actions of August 5, 2019, Indian occupation forces have killed 639 innocent Kashmiris in extra-judicial murders. Numerous reports of the UN, including the two commissioned by the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in 2018 and 2019, have re-confirmed ongoing Indian atrocities against the Kashmiri people.

“Most ominously, India has been seeking to change the demographic structure of the occupied territory in flagrant violation of relevant UN Security Council resolutions, international law, and the 4th Geneva Convention.

“Contemplating the holding of any G20 related meeting/event in IIOJK, in utter disregard of the globally acknowledged ‘disputed’ status of the territory, is a travesty that the international community cannot accept under any circumstances.

“It is expected that in case of any such controversial proposal from India, which would be designed to seek international legitimacy for an illegal and tyrannical occupation continuing for over seven decades, the G20 members will be fully cognisant of the imperatives of law and justice and would reject it out-right,” the spokesperson said.

Pakistan also strongly urged the international community to call upon India to end its gross and systematic violations of human rights in IIOJK, revoke its illegal and unilateral actions of August 5, 2019, and free all political prisoners including the true Kashmiri leaders.

“The only way to lasting peace in South Asia is by granting the people of the IIOJK their inalienable right to self-determination as pledged to them in the relevant UN Security Council resolutions,” he said.

Ahead of G20 meeting in Srinagar, Pakistan expresses ‘strong indignation’

Expressing its “strong indignation” over India’s decision to hold the G20 Tourism Working Group meeting in Srinagar on May 22-24, 2023, Pakistan has said that India is exploiting its membership of an important international grouping to advance its self-serving agenda.

A statement issued by Pakistan’s Foreign Affairs Ministry on Tuesday said, “India’s irresponsible move is the latest in a series of self-serving measures to perpetuate its illegal occupation of Jammu & Kashmir in sheer disregard of the UN Security Council resolutions, and in violation of the principles of the UN Charter and international law. Pakistan vehemently condemns these moves.”

Besides the tourism working group meeting in Srinagar next month, it has also raised objections to the scheduling of two other meetings of a consultative forum on youth affairs (Y20) in Leh and Srinagar, calling them “equally disconcerting”.

It said such events cannot hide the reality of Jammu and Kashmir being an internationally recognised dispute that has remained on the agenda of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for over seven decades.

The G20 tourism track meeting will be the first major international event to be held in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir since the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019. Delegates from G20 member states, guest countries and several international organisations have been invited to participate in the event as part of India’s G20 Presidency.

While the G20 member countries comprise Argentina, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, Mexico, the United Kingdom, the United States of America and the European Union, India’s special invitee guest countries this time include Bangladesh, Egypt, Mauritius, Netherlands, Nigeria, Oman, Singapore, Spain and the UAE.

Besides delegates from these countries, those representing international organisations such as UNWTO and International Labour Organization are also expected to attend the Srinagar meet.

With its decision to host G-20 events in Kashmir, India is again exploiting its membership of an important international grouping for advancing its self-serving agenda, Pakistan said. “For a country that has a grandiose vision about itself and its place in the world, India has once more demonstrated that it is unable to act as a responsible member of the international community,” the statement said.

India defends G20 Kashmir venue, countering Pakistan criticism

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - India on Thursday countered Pakistan's objection to the holding of Group of 20 (G20) meetings in the Himalayan regions of Kashmir and Ladakh, saying it was free to hold meetings on its own territory.

Kashmir is claimed in full but ruled in part by the two nuclear-armed neighbours who have fought two of three wars over control of the region.

Jammu and Kashmir was a state having special privileges until 2019, when Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government split it into two federally controlled territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.

Islamabad condemned India's decision to hold the meeting in the two territories earlier this week, calling the move an irresponsible violation of international law.

"G20 events and meetings are happening across India and it's only natural to do them in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, which are an integral and inalienable part of India," Indian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi told reporters.

India is set to host a Group of 20 (G20) meeting in Indian-administered Kashmir, with residents and experts saying the controversial event is aimed at projecting “normalcy” in the disputed region.

The third G20 working group meeting on tourism will be held in the region from May 22 to 24 – the first global event there since August 5, 2019 when India’s right-wing government scrapped the special status of the country’s only Muslim-majority region.

In the years since New Delhi brought Indian-administered Kashmir under its direct control, the government has pushed a series of laws and policies that Kashmiris in the valley say are aimed at undermining their struggle for the right to self-determination of their future.

India is currently the president of the G20, an intergovernmental bloc comprised of 19 countries and the European Union. The group accounts for 80 percent of the world’s gross domestic product (GDP).

‘Putting a lid on our miseries’

India claims the G20 event will boost the region’s tourism industry as it plans to take the delegates for a tour of the picturesque Himalayan valley.

Srinagar, the region’s main city with 1.4 million residents, is getting a facelift for the event. Roads leading to the airport have been given a coat of tar and paint. Lampposts along the streets have been illuminated in orange, white, and green, the colours of India’s national flag.

The security bunkers dotting the city have been painted in blue while the concertina wires that were seen all over one of the world’s most militarised regions have been removed in many places.

The tricolour national flags have also been installed across the city. Schools, colleges and other government buildings have been painted with a G20 logo, in which India has added a lotus, the election symbol of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

A political analyst based in Kashmir told Al Jazeera, on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisals by the Indian government, that “a sense of security in any place does not come with conferences”.

“For such an event, there should have been an elected chief minister and we do not have one. I hope the world does notice these things,” he said, referring to the dissolution of the region’s elected legislative assembly in 2018.

A relative of a prominent Kashmiri activist, who was arrested and imprisoned away from home under “terrorism” charges as part of India’s crackdown after the 2019 move, told Al Jazeera the G20 meeting was “like putting a lid on our miseries”.

“It is not like the international community does not know anything about this place. We are suffering silently and we feel so cut off from the buzz outside. We are just surviving each day,” the 42-year-old said on condition of anonymity.

Michael Kugelman, director of the South Asia Institute at the Wilson Center in the United States, told Al Jazeera that India, by holding the G20 event, wants to claim there is peace in the region.

“[An] underlying goal at play is to capitalise on a perception growing within the international community that Kashmir has been normalised, and that it represents an attractive opportunity, not a dangerous challenge,” he said.

“In effect, for New Delhi, holding this meeting in Srinagar is meant to telegraph a message of ‘all is well’ and ‘all is normal’. And much of the world will buy into that narrative.”

New Delhi-based political analyst Sarral Sharma, however, thinks the meeting is anticipated to showcase not only Kashmir’s tourism potential but also the record increase in tourist arrivals since 2019.

“Hence, the selection of Srinagar as the venue for this meeting is significant,” Sharma told Al Jazeera.

“While certain countries, such as Pakistan, attempt to criticise India for organising the G20 meeting in Srinagar, it is essential to note that Pakistan is not a member of the G20 grouping. Therefore their objections hold no relevance.”

The Himalayan territory of Kashmir is claimed by both India and Pakistan, who govern over parts of it. The two nuclear powers have fought two of their three full-scale wars over the region.

In a statement on Monday, Fernand de Varennes, the United Nations special rapporteur on minority issues, accused India of seeking to normalise the “brutal and repressive denial of democratic and other rights of Kashmiri Muslims and minorities” by holding G20 meeting in the disputed region.

He said the situation in Kashmir “should be decried and condemned and not pushed under the rug and ignored”.

“The government of India is seeking to normalise what some have described as a military occupation by instrumentalising a G20 meeting and portray an international ‘seal of approval’,” Varennes said in the statement shared on Twitter.

The UN expert said “massive human rights violations” have been reported in Kashmir since it came under New Delhi’s direct rule. “These included torture, extrajudicial killings, denial of political participation rights of Kashmiri Muslims and minorities,” he said.

“The G20 is unwittingly providing a veneer of support to the façade of normalcy at a time when massive human rights violations, illegal and arbitrary arrests, political persecution, restrictions, and even suppression of free media and human rights defenders continue to escalate,” he added.

The UN expert said international human rights obligations and the UN Declaration of Human Rights should be upheld by organisations such as G20.

In response, India’s permanent mission to the UN in Geneva rejected the statement as “baseless and unwarranted allegations”.

“As the G20 president, it is India’s prerogative to host its meeting in any part of the country,” the mission tweeted.

However, Kugelman of the South Asia Institute said much of the international community “already appears to believe that Kashmir is no longer a conflict or a dispute”.

“At the least, many if not most governments are willing to set aside any concerns about Kashmir in order to ensure good relations with New Delhi, which much of the international community regards as a key trade and investment partner. This is why even most Muslim-majority countries have stayed quiet on the Kashmir issue,” he told Al Jazeera.

Security has been stepped up in India-held Jammu and Kashmir by the BJP government amid a surge in attacks ahead of a G20 meeting in the disputed territory.

Srinagar is due to host a tourism working group meeting of G20 members on May 22-24, part of a series of meetings before a G20 summit scheduled to be held in New Delhi in September.

Srinagar has been at the centre of an uprising by Kashmiri fighters against Indian occupation since 1989. Tens of thousands of people have been killed although the violence has been reduced in recent years.

Indian officials said they fear Kashmiri fighters could try to promote their cause with an attack before or during the G20 meeting. “The timing of attacks is worrisome as they are planned just before the G20 meeting,” said an Indian army officer requesting anonymity.

Military and police officers said they had intelligence information that Kas*hmiris might target a military-run school in Jammu and take students hostage.

In response, all such schools had been shut and classes moved online until after the G20 meeting, they said.

Security agencies are not taking any chances in Srinagar, officers said.

Vijay Kumar, chief of police in the Kashmir Valley, said that commandos had been deployed in the city and members of a counter-terrorism force would be stationed in various places.

China, Turkey likely to skip G20 summit in IIOJK
Pakistan is hoping that Saudi Arabia and Indonesia may follow suit

China and Turkey are unlikely to attend the controversial G20 meeting on tourism in Srinagar in a move that would be seen as some diplomatic victory for Pakistan, which is opposing Indian attempts to portray the normalcy in the disputed region.

India, the current president of G20, is set to host the meeting on tourism from May 22 to May 24. It is going to be the first major global event in the disputed region particularly after India unilaterally revoked the special status of the Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) in August 2019.

G-20 comprises rich nations plus the European Union. The intergovernmental bloc accounts for 80 per cent of the world’s gross domestic product (GDP).

Countries which have close ties with Pakistan are part of the grouping. Those include China, Turkey, Indonesia and Saudi Arabia.

Since India decided to host the tourism meeting in Srinagar, Pakistan launched a diplomatic offensive to counter the New Delhi’s move. Pakistan’s efforts have achieved partial success as China and Turkey are believed to be not sending their delegates to the Srinagar meeting, according to official sources.

Pakistan is hoping that Saudi Arabia and Indonesia may follow suit. Similarly, other countries given the sensitivity of the issue are only sending their diplomats based in New Delhi to the event.

There has been no official confirmation from the foreign office.

However, Pakistan’s former ambassador to India Abdul Basit said his sources confirmed that China and Turkey would stay away from the G20 meeting in Srinagar.

“My sources tell me China and Turkey are not attending G20 meeting in Srinagar. Almost all other countries are sending their Delhi-based diplomats to the meeting. I expect Saudi Arabia and Indonesia to also show solidarity with Kashmiris,” Basit wrote in a tweet.

While Indian government is trying to show all is well in the disputed territory, independent experts believe that this can’t brush the issue under the carpet.

What can Pakistan do? It should keep quiet and focus more on its economy and its people.

RexRex - this is what I was talking about in Indian politics thread. Read the last line - 'country's only muslim majority region'. Can't you guys (you and your beloved Christian/muslim friends) show them the Indian constitution and preach secularism here? Or that gyan is only restricted to hindu majority regions?

This will be the future across India moment minority population crosses 51%. Thing is, you also very well aware of this but won't accept.

Lately I have been following the developments that are going on in Kashmir and I have also watched many vlogs from young Kashmiri vloggers. I am quite impressed with the developments. Have to give credit where its due. After abrogation of article 370, Kashmir has changed a lot. I don't know what army does there with locals though. Only people from there can tell that better. :inti

China Opposes G20 Meeting In Kashmir, Says Will Not Attend

China has strongly opposed the holding of a G20 meeting in Kashmir, while Turkey and Saudi Arabia have not registered for the event to be held in Srinagar.

On Friday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said that "China firmly opposes holding G20 meetings in any form in "disputed" areas and will not attend such meetings."

This is the first such strongly worded statement by China on the G20 event in Srinagar. The 3rd G20 Tourism Working Group meeting will be held on May 22-24 in Srinagar amid heightened security in the region.

China has not only decided to stay away from the event, but it has also raised the issue of Kashmir's "disputed" status ahead of the first major international event in Jammu and Kashmir since the state was stripped of its special status and statehood in 2019.

Around 60 delegates from G20 countries are expected to attend the meeting in Srinagar. However, earlier it was expected that over 100 delegates would attend the meet.

Sources say Turkey has decided to stay away from the meeting, and Saudi Arabia has not registered for the event so far.

Srinagar is under an unprecedented security blanket. Marine commandos and National Security Guards (NSG) have been deployed in the region as part of the ground-to-air security cover.

Marines, also known as Marcos, have taken over the security of Dal Lake, around the Sher-e-Kashmir International Convention Centre (SKICC), the venue for the G20 meeting. NSG commandos have been conducting area domination exercises along with police and paramilitary forces. On Thursday, NSG carried out searches at Lal Chowk.

Paramilitary troops were seen entering the houseboats and carrying out searches.

Houseboats are made of wood, including cedar, and have exquisite wood carvings. They represent the culture and age-old tradition of Kashmir.

Officials say the G20 event in Srinagar is to showcase Kashmir's tourism potential and also send a message to the world that it is an integral part of the country.

The participation of member countries of the world's most powerful club is seen as an endorsement of India's stand.

Security forces have inputs that terrorists may try to carry out some major attack to disrupt the G20 event. Massive security operations are being carried out to prevent any such attempt. Army, Border Security Force (BSF), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) and Jammu and Kashmir Police are part of the security grid in the region.

If the news is true, this us a huge step from China! I never expected such a move.

Its because Article 370 removal has rendered the existing political mafia of Abdullahs and Muftis and all others such as JK conference toothless. These guys have been concentrating power by stoking fear locally in Kashmir and then saying opposite when they come to Delhi. They were taking privileges form Indian government, giving assurances to Pakistan and consoling local Kashmiri's conveniently to their strengths and keeping power concentrated without any attention to the development and welfare. Basically they figured out a perfect formula to thrive during the dispute by playing everybody else against each other, hence when Article 370 was abrogated these political parties were more concerned than the people on street. I do believe eventually a democratic process needs to be restored but not sure if the central government has any intention to do so. It's fair to say they have their own agenda even though to their credit they have managed it well so far.

Now coming to the state excesses, as a state India will enforce it's writ on its territory when there is violence and it's utopian to expect that there has not been any wrong doings or mistreatment during the counter. End of the day individuals in the army regardless of institutional training on discipline and conduct will be prone to make mistakes, as experiences, biases and temper definitely play a role for some. What will make us stronger is the day when we acknowledge any such incident with the guilty getting it's due without being apologetic to the terrorists or international media as they have their own vested agenda. Bottom-line we don't need to be apologetic to the wrong people and we should not be in denial to the deserving folks specially when they are equal citizens of the country.

Kashmir's future is bright imo.

Pakistan is broke and getting worse by the day, they have no money to pay the stone pelters, heck they barely have much money for themselves.

As Pakistan keeps going down the rabbit hole, India will keep developing it's Kashmir territory and once the misguided youth see the growth, employment, financials etc they will say tata to extremism for good and Pakistan will officially become nothing in this Kashmir equation, they pretty much are now anyway but it will be even more sealed...

Once Kashmir is gone for good and no longer polluting Pakistani minds, they may see light at the end of the tunnel and try to build a successful country.....

I think it's time to start worrying about Azad Kashmir. Kashmiris on both sides are well aware of what's happening. There is only so much fervour and jazba you can create when economy and institutions are failing. It's time to somehow get things right. Or maybe that time has passed.

Developments were expected, issue isnt developments, its the domiciles being issue to outsiders to change the population.

Plebiscite will eventually happen and India will get it done to close this chapter once and for all. It will happen maybe in 20 years. But it wont happen before the demographics are messed with.

There was no reason to issue domiciles to outsiders like what is happening now. Once the demographics have been messed up, a plebicite would be done and its legitimacy would be claimed officially.

Right now Pakistan is trying to record those new domiciles so that whenever India decides to get a plebiscite done, they have a proof that remove these names first than we can talk.

While the removal of article played to Pakistans benefit as it eliminated shimla agreement, the domiciles increase of outsiders is becoming a bit of a concern.

Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari said on Sunday that India would not be able to “suppress the voices of the people of occupied Kashmir” by holding the G20 moot in the disputed region.

The third meeting of the G20 Tourism Working Group under India’s presidency will be held from May 22 to 24 in Srinagar, according to Indian media.

India assumed the year-long presidency of the G20 in December last year. It is set to host a leaders’ summit in New Delhi in early September.

Pakistan has expressed strong indignation at New Delhi’s decision to hold the G20 Tourism Working Group meeting in occupied Kashmir and called it a “self-serving move”.

Talking to the media today after landing in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) on a three-day visit, FM Bilawal said: “It is not possible for India to play an important role in the world by violating UN resolutions.”

“At a time when India is holding a conference in occupied Kashmir, I have been invited to deliver an address to the AJK Assembly,” the minister said.

Bilawal stated that he would also attend a protest rally in the Bagh district to express solidarity with the Kashmiri people. “I believe that when a country takes a step like that India has taken, their real face comes forth in front of the world,” he added.

Blow to India

India has suffered a serious blow as a number of G20 countries have either refused to attend a tourism moot scheduled to begin in Srinagar tomorrow or have yet to commit to attending the event.

China has taken the lead in boycotting the event in the occupied region as its foreign ministry spokesperson said that his country “is firmly opposed to holding … meetings in the disputed territory”.

Moreover, Indian media has reported that Turkiye and Saudi Arabia, both G20 members, have yet to confirm participation while Egypt, which is not a member of the bloc but was invited as a guest, has also not yet registered for the event.

Meanwhile, analysts say India is using the G20 meeting in an attempt to normalise what Pakistan describes as a military occupation of the disputed territory and to create an impression of international approval of its Aug 5, 2019 move that violates the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolution on the disputed status of Kashmir.

A UN human rights expert said the meeting would support a “facade of normalcy” while “massive human rights violations” continue in the region.

“The government of India is seeking to normalise what some have described as a military occupation by instrumentalising a G20 meeting and portraying an international seal of approval,” said Fernand de Varennes, the special rapporteur on minority issues, in a statement.

He asserted that G20 is “unwittingly” providing a veneer of support to a facade of normalcy at a time when massive human rights violations, illegal and arbitrary arrests, political persecutions, restrictions, and even suppression of free media and human rights defenders continue to escalate.“

International human rights obligations and the UN Declaration of Human Rights should still be upheld by organisations such as the G20, he said. “The situation in Jammu and Kashmir should be decried and condemned, not pushed under the rug and ignored with the holding of this meeting,” the statement added.

India, however, slammed the expert’s statement terming them as “baseless” and “unwarranted” in its response shared by India’s mission at the UN on Twitter.

Srinagar Decked Up, Security Tightened Ahead Of Historic G20 Meet
Around 60 delegates from the member countries of G20 are attending the meeting. Officials say the highest number of delegates for the Srinagar event are coming from Singapore.

Jammu and Kashmir will host the third tourism working group meeting of G20 countries in capital Srinagar from today amid tight security. This is the first such international event in the region after Centre revoked Jammu and Kashmir's special status and stripped of its statehood in August 2019.
A glittering facelift has been given to parts of Srinagar city and roads leading to Sher-e-Kashmir International Convention Center or SKICC, the venue for the G20 meeting.

Harshavardhan Shingha, Chief Coordinator G20, said India is halfway through its G20 presidency and so far 118 meetings have been held across the country.

He said the Srinagar meeting has received the highest number of participants in comparison to two earlier meetings on tourism.

Around 60 delegates from the member countries of G20 are attending the meeting. Officials say the highest number of delegates for the Srinagar event are coming from Singapore.

There are also delegates from special invitee guest countries who are attending the meeting.

China has opposed the holding of a G20 meeting in Kashmir, while Saudi Arabia has not registered for the event. Turkey, it appears, has decided to stay away from the Srinagar meeting.

"China firmly opposes holding G20 meetings in any form in disputed areas and will not attend such meetings," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said on Friday.

India countered the objection by saying it is free to hold meetings on its own territory. It said peace and tranquility on its border is essential for normal ties with China.

This was the first such strongly worded statement by China on G20 event in Srinagar.

Ahead of the meeting, Srinagar is under an unprecedented security blanket. Marine commandos and national security guards have been deployed as part of the ground-to-air security cover.

Anti-drone units have been activated and national security guards are deployed at sensitive places and installations.

Thousands of troops from the Army, Border Security Force (BSF), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) and Jammu and Kashmir Police are part of the security grid amid reports that terrorists may try to disrupt the G20 event in Kashmir.

A few countries have refused to attend which is a huge L for India so Pakistan doesn’t really need to do anything.

Think your thinking is a little flawed there.

Not exactly. China and Turkey have a biased stand here. You can't do much. Turkey has been particularly endorsing anti India rhetoric through its media. It won't change no matter what while Erdogan is in power. China is not going to support for obvious reasons.

Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) President Barrister Sultan Mehmood Chaudhry and British MP Mirza Khalid Mehmood have said that the G-20 Working Group meeting being held by India in Srinagar has failed because key members of the group, including China, had categorically refused to attend the conference.

Addressing a press conference at his office in Islamabad on Sunday, they claimed that, along with China, many other members of the group would skip the meeting.

Referring to the Indian government’s nefarious designs to use the high-profile event to achieve its strategic objectives, they said that the G-20 nations’ decision to skip the conference being held in the restive region was a clear indication that they have refused to become brand ambassadors of India’s so-called normalcy narrative on Kashmir.

They said that India’s main motive behind organising the G-20 Summit events in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) was meant to hoodwink the international community by creating a false impression that everything was normal in Kashmir.

My point is China is NOT a small entity and an important part of G20.

What they say/do is significant - whether India likes it or not.

Only China and Turkey.

There is not much Pakistan can do, given the current situation in the country. Pakistan has so many challenges to overcome (if even possible).

how ever China and Turkey not joining this meeting is also a huge deal. One cant deny that.

Ofcourse. China is the new USSR . India better focus on managing its economy and defence to avoid any major disparity which already exists.

Pakistan has done well to ensure Turkey is absent. China anyways is expected

G7 Vows Economic Coercion Will 'Face Consequences'

G7 leaders vowed Saturday that attempts to "weaponise" trade and supply chains would "fail and face consequences," in a thinly veiled warning to China over its economic practices.

Pushing back against Beijing's willingness to wield trade measures in diplomatic disputes has been a key theme of the bloc's meeting in Hiroshima though, in the end, its statement on economic security did not directly reference China.

Still, the target was clear, with the group warning of a "disturbing rise in incidents of economic coercion" that attempt to "undermine the foreign and domestic policies and positions of G7 members" and partners.

"Attempts to weaponise economic dependencies by forcing G7 members and our partners including small economies to comply and conform will fail and face consequences," it added.

The bloc is particularly concerned about its vulnerability in key sectors including critical minerals, semiconductors and batteries, all of which are vital to modern economies.

It pledged to strengthen supply chains and address disruptions, and ensure that technologies with national security applications are "appropriately controlled" -- also likely to be seen as a reference to keeping certain goods out of Beijing's hands.

Earlier, US and EU officials previewed the group's position, including language that will come in a final communique at the end of the three-day summit.

"You will find the China language to be totally straightforward. It is not hostile or gratuitous," National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said.

"There are key elements right from the top of that language that speak to the desire for stable relations with China and the desire to work together on issues of mutual interest," he added.

"It also spells out our concerns, but those concerns are well known to China."

So this is why China is upset and not attending G20 and pressurizing its friends to not attend.

Ahh Well, no big deal, life goes on...

Wow. Not only China but Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia AND Turkey have refused to attend. What a flop this has turned out to be.

In answer to the question, what should Pakistan's response be - nothing. It's a nothing event.

Start small to build the confidence. Things will take time to go from state of political anarchy to a stable state marked by industrial development, tourism and employment.

Large section of Kashmiri people and youth are looking forward to the opportunities that are being created in the state. They have been suppressed by the political mafia and the terror agencies for decades. Hope things take a positive turn gradually and the region sees good progress over next decades.

Egypt is only a special invitee to the meeting, Indonesia already have confirmed their participation in the event

Well said , irrespective of how many participate go ahead with it.

I never expected so many countries to back Pakistan. This is really surprising and embarrassing for India.

So, only China and Pakistan are left.

Take Saudi with a pinch of salt. Both UAE and Saudi are already investing millions in Kashmir.

Remember that Saudi Arabia and Iran refused permission to Pakistan’s missions in their country for holding public events to observe 27 October as a Black Day.

Gulf Arab countries have remained mostly silent as India's government moved to strip the Jammu and Kashmir of its limited autonomy.

They are not backing Pakistan, Pakistan is a non factor in most political circles.

China is not attending because of the world leaders calling them out during the G7 meet recently, Saudis have been getting cozy with the Chinese recently and it is no secret they have a strained relationship with the Biden administration..... Only country genuinely backing Pakistan is a country like Turkey.

Look bro, its embarrassing when such a big meeting is declined by others. It was a foolish move, a desperate weak move to somehow show India and Kashmir is one. All it has done is for others to ask why such huge players are refusing to attend, highlighting the occupation.

Modi once again shoots himself in his little holy foot.

It doesn't even matter whether or not India likes what China does because no one cares. By visiting Kashmir, China stand on Kashmir won't have changed and everyone knows that. China is a very important part of g20 but if anyone thinks Modi organizing a meet in Kashmir has anything to do with g20 then they don't understand politics. Kashmir visit is only about India trying to show to the world that things are normal in Kashmir and even if 75% countries visit, it's a pretty good accomplishment. Fine let's say 25% of countries may not align with India on Kashmir but atleast remaining 75% are aligning. Things got to start somewhere and 3/4th alignment is as good as it can get, atleast now we know only the remaining 25% have to be worked upon.

Please have some respect for India. Coming with this % is daft, as the BIG players arent coming.

You have been watching some daft Indian news channel, making up reasons to save face.

The world wants to work with India, because of his size and population, but its a 3rd world nation , with hundreds of millions in poverty, not 90's USA superpower, so the other players will just laugh and say no.

If you think i am the one saving face here, then you need to work upon your perception skills. Reading your post, even your close friends will concede that you are the one feeling hurt about this Kashmir meet. India is no US and we are still a developing nation isn't something that we already don't know, but i am personally happy that we are in the right direction. Atleast we aren't calling Americans congressmen and pleading them to intervene in our domestic matters :D

This isnt a right direction as India has only helped to bring attention to the occupation. Modi messed up in Kashmir many times inc when attempting to bomb Pakistan, this is yet another blunder.

I do feel hurt but only when seeing humans being occupied, girls being raped, boys being tortured and killed. Its called being a human being, try it sometime.

Yes sir, half your posts are riddled with expletives calling people stupid, muppet and what not, so pretty rich of you to talk about being human. Most fine human beings don't do that, but hey like i said in an earlier post to you, certain things have no limit so carry on with your rants.

I understand why Pakistan hates Modi. The fact
that nothing absolutely nothing happened post abrogation of article 370 inspite of Pakistanis crying their lungs out gotta hurt big time. So you want to feel better by thinking Modi is making a blunder, then you should absolutely think that way. There's nothing more important than thoughts that can help one sleep well at night.

Purely from policy making it's called incrementalism. A dispute around Kashmir can't be solved in one day, there's no way the entire world will align with India on one fine day. So the age old practise of incrementalism works, when you slowly and slowly get people on board. You start with tourism meet, let people get used to it, few might not come but that's fine (btw Saudi is also sending it's tourism delegate for the meet). Then another year you do an economic event there, it's a given more people than last time will turn up. Slowly slowly you get people used to these changes.

Sir lol

Calling out stupid arguments isnt the same as defending rape, torture, murder and occupation. How those who do like you sleep at night is strange.

You've been watching too many dumb Indian news channels. Its a huge blunder but you think this is some sort of incremental tactic lol India wont be using Kashmir as a location for any future G20 meetings, feel free to bump this if they do.

Many Nations will not go to a land which is under Int law is occupied.

What big players???

China and India are having a border stand-off in Aksai cheen. Aksai cheen is part of Chinese occupied territory of erstwhile Kashmir kingdom.

Turkey is a Pakistani ally and have been against India for long time.

So no one in India expected anything better.

Which other players?

I don't think countries are taking their decision on the basis of what Pakistan is thinking.

Modi has settled the Kashmir issue. Pakistan can't do anything about it.

Infact, Chinese support to Pakistan on this means the west and their allied wont support. Works for us.

So you should be happy if India is making a blunder, isn't? Why you getting all worked up. And in order to help people who are suffering from atrocities of security forces, why don't you head to Balochistan and help in finding 1000s of what supreme court of Pakistan once said 'forced disappearances'. The best part is you don't even need a visa to visit Balochistan, while visa to visit Kashmir will always remain a dream. Or like your namesake you will make a uturn now ?

India’s presidency of the G20 group of leading nations has become mired in controversy after China and Saudi Arabia boycotted a meeting staged in Kashmir, the first such gathering since India unilaterally brought Kashmir under direct control in August 2019.

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2...ency of the G20,direct control in August 2019.

China , Saudi, Turkey are big players. They have influence over the Muslim world , African nations and many others around the world.

The people in the world dont make their minds up because RSS supporters like you or dimwits like the extremist Modi, they see nations are not going because the land is occupied.

As I said, this idiotic decision by Hindu extremists has only lead to more highlighting the land is occupied.

Youve been watching too much Bollywood movies of Sanjay Dutt or some other clown. When I reply to RSS supporters who support the abuses in Kashmir, I type in an assertive format as I have no respect for such people at all.

The old RSS tactic of diverting when you have no brain to debate. Balochistan is not occupied. Stick to the topic as such diversions are not even similar. Or are you related to Modi?

Discussion on g20 meet in Kashmir and your responses are centered around Indians film actors, Sanjay dutt, Bollywood movies, India's population, India's news channels, India is not US, india's poverty and finally RSS. Yet i am the one diverting from the topic! You may not be sharpest knife in your friends group, but you are one hell of an entertainment.

Nah disagree brother... Let's look at this objectively, what does Pakistan offer to the world or to the countries that has skipped this meet ?

- Economy = basic minimum to nil,
- Money = nil,
- Political stability = nil.

This is not about Pakistan, Pakistan just happened to be there at the right time and that is all the relevance Pakistan has in this G20 situation.

Quite the opposite really, it was the Modi government that got rid of the article 370, started developing a land that was rotting away under my ammayi Sonya and to now hold G20 meet there is a statement. Indian Kashmir will get so much support and development under the BJP government that Pakistan will have zero influence, well they are pretty much there now anyways.

Pakistan needs to let go of their Kashmir delusions, it has done them no good, your army is using it as a boogey man to control whatever money Pakistan has and look at the mess Pakistan is now. If Pakistanis are insistent on shooting themselves in the feet and keep going as they currently are well then no one can save them.

It seems your mentality is based on watching trash like Bollywood and your understanding is based on watching the likes of IndiaTV news and you call others not the sharpest lol.

I wrote context , you wrote diversion but glad you understand the difference now.

Watch some Bolly movies on Kashmir, where an Indian soldier jumps from a plane with no parachute and saves the world after signing a song while falling.

I never stated this about Pakistan, yet youve ignored my main point and as usual divert.

When you attempt to hold such a big meeting in occupied land, big players refuse to come its foolish because you have only helped to bring attention to occupation. There were people who didnt know much but now they are aware of the decades ages rapes of schoolgirls, murders and the rest.

But hey ho, keep supporting Modi bro.

PS use the quote boxes please, I dont want to think Im replying to Modi himself who thinks clouds ruin radar. lol.

Think what you want.

A country like China that is doing all atrocities to the Uighur's lecturing us on Kashmir ? serious lol ???

Bruh, let it be, we are not going to agree on this and that is OK...

Again ,more diversion. China is not attacking anyone because of their faith and even so not to the extent of what Indian occupiers have done. Ive not heard of mass rapes by Chinese but only Chinese beating up Indian troops.

Sure bro, agree to disagree but its impossible for anyone to claim this was a smart move by Modi lol.

P.s There is another thread I tagged you in, please give your views, would be interested in reading them.

Put it splendidly in a Pakistani point of view the above.

There is no diversion, I stated my points. Countries like US, countries from Europe etc who are allegedly all for human rights or should I say the champions of human rights are attending.

Like I said we wont see eye to eye on this, but that's fine, I have been quite impressed with the development that has happened in Kashmir over the last few years, in a decade I feel Kashmir could become one of India's major economic hubs.

All this was possible because of PM Modi and BJP and gotta give credit where it is due..

Okay. At the end of the day, number of countries are not attending. That is embarrassing. There is no shame admitting it. We have to be honest. I bash Pakistan 24/7 and I am not afraid to admit it. This time, India has been left red-faced.

according to you ... What would be the criteria for you to conclude otherwise ? EVERY Nation invited should have attended ?

Turkey government has not sent any official delegate but has promoted their tour operators to attend. Good strategy in my opinion for keeping options open for reconciliation.

Yes agreed you are not one of those blind Pakistanis. Credit where it is due.

However, imo I do not feel it is embarrassing to India that China or Suadi didn't attend. It would have been if the Europeans and the Americans didn't though as India's semi conductor industry and strategic alliance against China is dependant on them...

Friends of Pakistan shun India’s G20 meet in Srinagar
Protest rallies taken out in AJK, Bilawal says New Delhi misusing its position as G20 chair

India’s presidency of the G20 group was mired in embarrassment on Monday, as it began a meeting on tourism in Srinagar amid boycott by China and Saudi Arabia and a very low-level participation from many other friends of Pakistan.

China already opposed the May 22-24 Working Group meet on Tourism in the internationally recognised disputed territory while other key members, including Turkiye, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Mexico, also avoided a full-fledged participation in the event.

The three-day gathering is taking place at a well-guarded complex on the shores of Dal Lake in Srinagar. With the meeting, New Delhi had hoped to project an image of normalcy in the disputed territory, according to several media reports.

The meeting began amid clampdown in sensitive areas of the summer capital of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).

Soldiers and armoured vehicles were deployed at multiple locations in Srinagar.

India had turned the region into an equivalent of the Guantánamo Bay prison simply to hold a meeting on tourism, former IIOJK chief minister Mehbooba Mufti said.

She accused the Bharatiya Janata party (BJP) of hijacking the G20 for its promotion.

The G20 is a group of 19 rich nations of the world plus the European Union. India holds the presidency of the grouping for 2023 and is holding several evens in various parts of the country, culminating in the G20 summit in New Delhi later this year.

This was the first major international event in IIOJK after Aug 5, 2019, when the BJP government stripped the region of its special status.

Last week, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said his country opposed the G20 meetings on the disputed territory.

Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia and Mexico have reportedly opted for low-level representation. Turkiye, Egypt – special invitee – and several other countries did not confirm the participation of their official delegations till last night.

In Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), meanwhile, protest rallies were brought out in various cities to denounce the Srinagar meeting.

In Islamabad, a rally was staged by the All Parties Hurriyat Conference AJK and submitted a memorandum to the UN mission.

Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari visited Muzaffarabad, the capital of AJK, and addressed the AJK Legislative Assembly.

He termed the G20 gathering illegal, and an attempt by India to seek legitimacy over its control of the disputed region.

“India is misusing its position as G20 chair,” he said, urging the world to take note of New Delhi’s gross human rights violations since India scrapped IIOJK’s independent status in August 2019 and annexed the region as part of its territory.

Bilawal said that holding a G20 meeting in Srinagar was a sheer violation of the UN resolutions on Kashmir, adding that the people of IIOJK had been denied their basic right to self-determination for decades.

What an embarrassment for India. Would have a long lasting effect on our stance on Kashmir.

India is "abusing" its presidency of the G20 by holding a tourism conference in the portion of disputed Kashmir it controls, Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari told AFP.

It is the first diplomatic event in the territory since Pakistan suspended trade and diplomatic ties with India in 2019 when New Delhi imposed direct rule on the part of Muslim-majority Kashmir it controls and enforced a heavy security lockdown.

"I wish I could say I was surprised, but I think that this is a continuation in what is becoming a norm now, of India's arrogance on the international stage," he told AFP in a Monday interview in Muzaffarabad, the capital of Pakistan-administered Kashmir.

"They're abusing their presidency of the G20 to push their colonial agenda, but if they think that by holding one event in occupied Kashmir they can silence the voice of the Kashmiri people, then I believe that they are truly mistaken."

The Indian illegally-controlled portion has been roiled for decades by an insurgency seeking independence or a merger with Pakistan, with tens of thousands of civilians, soldiers and Kashmiri rebels killed in the conflict.

Non-G20 member Pakistan controls another part, and says holding the tourism meeting from Monday to Wednesday in the territory violates international law, UN Security Council resolutions and bilateral agreements.

The G20 participants -- made up of the European Union and the world's 19 top economies -- have been "put in a pretty awkward spot", said the 34-year-old Bhutto Zardari.

"Those countries who make it a point to remind us and protest how outrageous it is that international law has been violated in Europe: I believe that they should be just as outraged when international law is violated in Kashmir," he said, in a reference to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

China, which also claims the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh in full as part of Tibet, has stood by Pakistan in condemning the meeting to promote tourism in the area -- renowned for its lakes, meadows and snow-capped mountains.

Saudi Arabia and Turkey are also not sending government representation, while some Western countries have scaled back their presence, according to reports.

'Patient people'

India is attempting to portray what officials have called "normalcy and peace" in the violence-wracked region by inviting the international community to a sprawling, well-guarded venue on the shores of Dal Lake in Srinagar.

Over the past week, residents have chafed under stepped-up security measures. Hundreds have been detained in police stations and thousands including shopkeepers have received calls from officials warning them against any "signs of protest or trouble".

"One of the most militarised zones in the world can never be seen as normal," said Bhutto Zardari.

The South Asian neighbours have fought three wars since the partition of the Indian subcontinent in 1947.

Since India's 2019 constitutional changes, the rebellion in Kashmir has been attempted to be crushed -- although young freedom fighters continue to join the insurgency.

Dissent has been criminalised, media freedoms curbed and public protests limited, in what critics say is a drastic curtailment of civil liberties by India.

The Pakistani foreign minister ruled out any chance of a warming of ties between the two countries unless New Delhi revoked the change in status of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

"Until this topic is addressed, it really stands in the way of peace in all of South Asia," said Bhutto Zardari -- the son of assassinated former prime minister Benazir Bhutto and the grandson of deposed and executed former premier Zulfikar Ali Bhutto.

Without it, no "meaningful dialogue" could begin on shared threats including militancy and worsening climate change.

The crackdown in Indian-administered Kashmir was ordered by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who since coming to power in 2014 has increasingly used religious polarisation to mobilise the Hindu majority.

Next year, he will seek a third term in power at elections.

"We are patient people," said Bhutto Zardari.
