ICC World Cup 2023: Sri Lanka (160/2) extend England's (156) win-less streak with a humiliating 8-wicket win in Match 25

Just three days ago, England were relieved to leave Mumbai, where the weather was harsh, and their opponents, South Africa, formidable. Bengaluru provides a more pleasant climate compared to the coastal city, but the pressure remains high for Jos Buttler's team. They've already suffered as many losses as they did during their championship-winning 2019 campaign, and their title defense is teetering on the brink, just past the halfway mark of this tournament.

Sri Lanka has arrived in Bengaluru from Lucknow, a city that can test one's endurance, but their camp appears to be less tense. They also have only one victory, but it's their most recent result, which they hope will propel them in the remaining matches.

England may not have the time or capacity to draw conclusions from history, even though Sri Lanka has had the upper hand in their last four encounters in the men's 50-over World Cup. Within the Sri Lankan dressing room, this could serve as motivation for a squad that has shown promise at times in this edition.

These two struggling teams in the lower half of the standings, separated only by a slight difference in their Net Run Rate, meet on the precipice of World Cup elimination, hoping to push the other closer to the brink.

When: October 26, 2023, 2:00 PM IST

Where: Chinnaswamy stadium, Bengaluru

Teams

England:

Reece Topley's unfortunate injury has prematurely concluded another World Cup for him, prompting England to bring in Brydon Carse as his replacement.

In their previous match, England made the decision to drop all their allrounders, but it didn't yield the desired results. Moeen Ali acknowledged that the change in strategy didn't pan out and hinted that England might return to their typical approach. This could potentially mean a return to the playing XI for the vice-captain and the likes of Chris Woakes, Sam Curran, and Liam Livingstone.

In terms of tactics and strategy, England's camp openly admitted that, following their humbling defeat to South Africa at Wankhede, they should have opted to bat first after winning the toss. They now recognize the importance of relying on their batting strength to set a substantial total and defend it as the preferred approach for the remainder of the tournament for Jos Buttler's side. In addition to securing crucial points, England also faces the urgent task of improving their dismal Net Run Rate (NRR).

To enhance their chances, England should focus on enhancing their performance in the death overs. In the two matches where they batted first, their batting in the last 10 overs was subpar, managing just 58/3 against New Zealand and a mere 66/6 against Bangladesh.

Sri Lanka:

Angelo Mathews, who has both batted and bowled in the lead-up to the game, is now officially a part of Sri Lanka's 15-member squad, stepping in to replace the injured Matheesha Pathirana.

It's likely that Sri Lanka will immediately include the former captain in the playing XI, potentially taking the place of Chamika Karunaratne. If Dunith Wellalage is fit, he should regain his spot, displacing Dushan Hemantha.

In terms of tactics and strategy, Sri Lanka has competed on two batting-friendly pitches in their recent matches, posting scores of 326 against South Africa in Delhi and 344/9 against Pakistan in Hyderabad. However, they couldn't secure any points as their weakened bowling attack struggled at both venues. The upcoming game at Chinnaswamy on Thursday presents a similar challenge for Sri Lanka's bowlers but provides them with an opportunity to rectify their previous shortcomings.

Left-arm pacer Dilshan Madushanka has impressed greatly thus far and should pose an early threat to England, a team that has experienced shaky starts in three out of their four recent outings.

Squads:

Sri Lanka Squad: Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Perera, Kusal Mendis(w/c), Sadeera Samarawickrama, Charith Asalanka, Dhananjaya de Silva, Dushan Hemantha, Chamika Karunaratne, Maheesh Theekshana, Kasun Rajitha, Dilshan Madushanka, Angelo Mathews, Dimuth Karunaratne, Dushmantha Chameera, Lahiru Kumara, Dunith Wellalage

England Squad: Jonny Bairstow, Dawid Malan, Joe Root, Ben Stokes, Harry Brook, Jos Buttler(w/c), David Willey, Adil Rashid, Chris Woakes, Gus Atkinson, Mark Wood, Brydon Carse, Moeen Ali, Liam Livingstone, Sam Curran

A runfest and with Sl pop gun attack and Eng more determined surely this will be quite a game expecting fireworks from Eng win the toss and bat first go.for 350+

Finally a win coming for England as it will be a belter and opposition is pretty average on flat tracks.

A more in form team lost at home to sri lanka in 2019 and an old fat malinga terrorised them. They are in worse touch now but sri lanka aren't doing much better.

Still edging towards england, but it could go either way.

I think England should win this.

England are in a bad shape but SL are much weaker.

The way Sri Lanka has played so far (patchy win against the Dutch, notwithstanding), I feel England (the return of Moeen Ali should bolster them both in bowling/batting) should canter this.

Eng is the firm fave for the 5th game in a row now lol !😁. Jeez I hope they win and put pressure on others. Wanted eng to qualify as I am a big fan of their bazball approach and believed in them in 2019 as well.. want Eng to bat 1st here and see how SA chokes oops I meant chases 😉..

SL I meant..

Angelo Matthew's returned for SL i think SL will give very tough time to eng.

Eng winning today handsomely and Pak beating SA tomorrow would make the WC semi berth one hell of a dog fight..

Seems likenthebfirst truly dead game in the tournament whereby it feels like the result has absolutely no meaning whatsoever.

Even yesterday's game, however outlandish expecting anything but a crushing loss from Netherlands was, had the potential to affect the standings.

England won the toss and chose to bat first.

TEAMS:

England
(Playing XI): Jonny Bairstow, Dawid Malan, Joe Root, Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler(w/c), Liam Livingstone, Moeen Ali, Chris Woakes, David Willey, Adil Rashid, Mark Wood

Sri Lanka (Playing XI): Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Perera, Kusal Mendis(w/c), Sadeera Samarawickrama, Charith Asalanka, Dhananjaya de Silva, Angelo Mathews, Maheesh Theekshana, Kasun Rajitha, Lahiru Kumara, Dilshan Madushanka

I am backing Sri Lanka to fight out the 4th spot with Australia

They have the most solid and stable Top 6 after India and South Africa and scored 330+ twice, losing both times

They will play India and NZ likely after both have qualified meaning they may not field their best XI vs Sri Lanka

Great bowling so far.. but I fear if they don’t get wickets while it’s swinging here the pitch is fairly flat and England are gonna try for a monstrous total

They are facing NZ and India , hunting for qualification points, after this. No chance for SL.

Sri lanka missed a good chance to get rid of Johny. If they had taken the review on the very first ball, England would have been 1 down for sure.

Chasing is better BUT SL look down and out so it wont matter much.

England however need to win by a massive margin and hope every other result goes their way.

Eng and Pak are two bug guns out of this tournament already.

Rajitha trundler bowling full. Gotta bowl hard lengths even in PP at the Chinnaswamy unless you can swing it back in to Malan.

After 5 overs, England is 39/0. Good start by England considering it is a must win situation for both teams.

England always have a good start but they truly struggle in the middle overs and apart from Root, noone else knows or is consistent enough to rebuild an innings.

Root is not in greatest of forms right now tbh. But if these 2 players can manage to stay on the crease till 20 overs, we will be looking at huge total.

Oh boy, Mathews is making an impact straight away. He got Malan. England is 1 down now for 46.

Fun fact:

Since the 2019 World Cup, Angelo Mathews had only participated in seven ODIs and hadn’t bowled in any match since March 2020.

However, after being called into Sri Lanka’s squad as an injury substitute, he made an impressive comeback by taking a wicket with his third delivery. What a remarkable return to form.

What a horrible way to get out. Root is gone this time. England is 2 down now for 57.

The fab 4 is such a fraud 4. Hate root beyond belief. He was a thorn in 2019 and is a thorn now.

It's a flat belter pitch? Just look at how far the first ball travelled despite hitting the pad? Why is it taking you 10 deliveries to get settled? And then get run out?

Bairstow gone as well... Can't believe the current World Champions look even more amateurish than out current lot...

Maybe this boring world cup can have it's first exciting match. England looks terrible out there.

Shockingly bad tournament for England so far.. they’re trying to smash every single ball while Sri Lanka is actually making the ball talk. In this situation you need someone to stick around if you want to put up a good score. Doesn’t matter if you’re going at a high RR if you’re bowled out in under 30 overs.

For all we know Buttler and Stokes could put on a massive partnership and still win this game, but this is just so terrible from the defending champs. Worse than Pakistan’s tournament meltdown so far and that’s saying a lot.

It's time for jos Buttler to stand up for his team and lead from the front but hopefully he doesn't bat like Babar who scored 74 off 92 against Australia.

Lmao England right now is desperately begging for a 74 off 92 type innings. Right now they’re on track for being bowled out under 200.

Butler now gone...thanks England, for making us not look the worst "Big" team in the World Cup

Lol and he is gone. Terrible world cup continues for him and his team.
Maybe he is even worse than Babar as a leader.LOL.

Now they’re really really begging for a 74 off 92 type innings.

Oh man, Buttler fails again. England is 4 down now in quick time. 77/4

Bro forget us, this is one of the worst meltdowns ever. They’re the defending champs and most people had them in there top 2 favorites for this WC!

Kumaraaaaaaaaa

What a wicket.

Bye bye see you buttler loser.

Let's go lanka

Lol all of the England players are out of form.
And here comes Liam the T20 hack Livingstone.

Not a single decent game this tournament.

We're freaking 25 matches in... Really need some better pitches where 250-280 are good totals.
Undeniably the most boring tournament of all time. If your team isn’t playing, you might as well not watch. The Indian crowds seem to agree too.

Basically, unless it's an absolute motorway, these blokes can't bat. And when they got a motorway at Wankhede, they couldn't bowl either.

Lol and he is gone. Terrible world cup continues for him and his team.
Maybe he is even worse than Babar as a leader.LOL.
I’ve never seen an entire team go into such bad form so suddenly at the same time 😂

I mean they put go at an ODI run rate in Test and now they come to ODI and can’t even bat a whole innings.

If England lose today and get knocked out of the tournament, what even would be the motivation to continue playing the next few games? Just moral victories? I imagine the England press is going to he brutal.

Kumara is also big
90 kg. Strong with a bitvof a belly. He steams in and bowls pretty accurately. What's our excuse?

They were never all that great. They lost to us and Lanka even in 2019
Also they were only good on pattas

ICC have to produce some better pitches. This tournament has lost all hype and it had little to begin with.

Weren't you calling this the GOAT WC? What a disaster this tournament has been. Will be quickly forgotten unless there's some decent games to save it.

Fair enough, but their destruction of Australia in the semi final was legitimately impressive. If only New Zealand had won the final..
