After the first T20I ended in a washout, India would be itching to get on to the field against a new-look South Africa for their first home fixture since March 2019.

Overview

India v South Africa, 2nd T20I
Punjab Cricket Association Stadium, Mohali
Wednesday, 18 September; 07:00pm local time, 01:30pm GMT

In an attempt to groom new talent before next year's ICC Men's T20 World Cup, India have persisted with Rahul and Deepak Chahar, Washington Sundar and Krunal Pandya for the series against South Africa. While Hardik Pandya has made a return after being rested for the West Indies tour, regulars such as Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and MS Dhoni are not a part of the 15-man set-up.

Rishabh Pant will be India's wicket-keeper batsman once again, and as pointed out by his head coach and captain, will be expected to make better decisions at the crease. India's wrist-spin duo of Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal have been left out to strengthen the lower-order batting.

South Africa will hope to start their new era with a win against a strong Indian unit. With Quinton de Kock in charge, Anrich Nortje, Temba Bavuma, Junior Dala, Beuran Hendricks and Jon-Jon Smuts, who were not a part of the 2019 World Cup, have all been included with an eye on testing their credentials.

Remember the last time

Forties from Shikhar Dhawan and Suresh Raina, followed by two scalps from Bhuvneshwar Kumar, helped India claim a seven-run victory in Cape Town in February 2018. JP Duminy made a fighting 55 for the hosts, while Christiaan Jonker made an impressive debut with a 24-ball 49. The last time the teams met in any international fixture was at the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2019, when South Africa were kept to 227/9. India chased it down with six wickets to spare, courtesy Rohit Sharma's 122*.

What they said

Virat Kohli, India captain: "There are a lot of T20s and Tests before the T20 World Cup next year and we are pushing youngsters into the system at every possible chance because it is important to finalise on a system."

David Miller, South Africa batsman: "Quinton has been around for many years, and he's got an incredible cricket brain. It's exciting times – new skipper, new players and a lot of young, fresh faces."

Conditions

The weather forecast for Mohali is more positive than it was for Dharamsala, and clear skies are expected. The PCA stadium has seen big T20I totals over the last few years – the lowest team total at the venue is 158/5.

Quinton de Kock is prepared for the extra responsibility of being South Africa's new white-ball captain and hopes to deliver his best as a leader.

De Kock, 26, last led South Africa in the final two one-day internationals of the five-match series in Sri Lanka in 2018, both of which ended in defeats. Now in charge of a young and relatively inexperienced side in the Twenty20 Internationals against India, he wants to make a positive impact.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, 17 September, ahead of the match on Wednesday, de Kock shrugged off suggestions that the extra responsibility of captaincy would weigh on his mind. "I'm not too concerned," he said. "It's just a new stepping stone in my career.

"[It] just gives me a bit of extra responsibility in the team. We'll see how it goes. It can affect me negatively or positively – I'm not sure at the moment. Hopefully, it gives me the positive energy and I give the best I can do."

The wicket-keeper batsman won't have the experience of AB de Villiers, Faf du Plessis or Hashim Amla to count on in his side. However, he doesn't expect their absence or his new responsibilities to change his style of play, or that of the younger lot.

"I think they (de Villiers, Amla and du Plessis) gave me lots of room to play the way I want. I don't see it why that would change without them here," he said. "Even they in their careers went through the same things that we're going through right now. So, we will take it as it comes.

"In the leadership group within the team we have discussions, we've had a chat about how we're going to go about things. So far it is under control, but we are also still learning. We are still quite a young leadership team. Hopefully, when our careers finish ... the youngsters coming through would learn from our mistakes."

With the first game at Dharamsala washed out, the series is now a two-match affair, with the second game in Mohali on Wednesday.

"Obviously, it was a bit of negative," de Kock agreed. "Now that we have only two games in this series, we better take our chances. The focus before the World T20 is to prepare in different conditions and to lose a game is not ideal."

This thread didn't get many posts. Wow!

South Africa - 149/5 after 20 overs.

Should be easy for India.

RSA 149/5 (20.0)
IND 15/0 (1.3) CRR: 10 REQ: 7.3
India need 135 runs

some seriously fast bowling by Anrich Nortje

Two sixes from Rohit in one over.

India are in a hurry.

India - 21/0 after 2 overs.

Rabada is losing it. He is out of form in LOI formats.

India are on a rampage.

30/0.

South Africa currently have below-par LOI teams. They finished 7th in WC and they were always shaky in T20I format.

Kohli touched batting average of 50 in T20I format.

India - 93/1 (11.2 overs).

57 runs needed from 52 balls.

One more failure for Panty boy. Time to try Samson, Kishen etc.

Pant has no brains. He needs lots of luck to score big. He can lose his composure at any instant and play a rash shot.

Try explaining this to jnaveen1980 please. :inti

And some fans thought he will play sensibly if a senior player like Dhoni or Kohli are at the other end. He is a tullaybaaz and doesn't deserve to bat above Shreyas Iyer. :inti

I’m fast losing my patience with Pant. The guy lacks any temperament.

South Africa filled their team up with too many pacers. You don't need more than 3 pacers in India.

You have nothing else to say about his poor performance today? :inti

He will be kicked out if he doesn’t do well
Lol what is there to say. Your favorites like useless Vijay Shankar is not coming back.
You went awfully quiet about Pandyas bowling lol he cleaned up miller

Easy win for India.

What is impressive is that absolute mediocre cricketers like Vijay Shankar have been completely discarded and hopefully India won't play such players any longer.

It's good to see some young blokes like Iyer and Gill Gil in.

Yeah Vijay Shankar won't come back as long as hypocrites like you are our selectors lol. They have different criterias for different players. Iyer was dropped after 4-5 T20 games whereas Pant has gone on to play 20 without getting dropped.

Pandya was going at 9 rpo after 3 overs and miller gifted his wicket away in the end. Nothing special.

You are such a despo. See how once again you brought other players into discussion when your favorite boy was called out for poor performance. :inti

No Vijay shankar won't come back. Because he sucks lol Your life depends only Pant's failure at this point.

Two excellent catches

VIRAT KOHLI and David Miller both took spectacular one-handed catches that were totally sensational in the second T20 International match between the Standard Bank Proteas and India at Mohali on Wednesday.

India won the match by seven wickets with an over to spare to give them a 1-0 lead in the series with just the final match of the series to be played at Bangaluru on Sunday after the opening match at Dharamsala last Sunday was washed out.

It was the Kohli catch that turned out to be the turning point of the match as it accounted for South African captain Quinton de Kock (52 off 37 balls) at a stage when he and debutant Temba Bavuma (49 off 43 balls) were setting the Proteas up for a challenging total after being put into bat.

But the departure saw India, deploying all their death bowling skills and particularly their changes of pace superbly, to restrict the Proteas to just 61 runs off the 54 balls they faced after De Kock’s dismissal.

Andile Phehlukwayo and Dwaine Pretorius did manage to hit a six each in the final over but the target India faced of 150 was some 30 runs short of what the Proteas needed.

Up to the time of De Kock’s dismissal the match had been extremely even with the two teams being locked on identical totals of 105/3 going into the final six overs.

But, with Kohli in charge (46 not out off 38 balls, 2 fours and a six), India were able to get home comfortably enough.
Miller’s catch on one of his home Indian Premier League grounds was as good a boundary catch as is ever going to be taken and certainly inspired the South African fielding standard which, even allowing for a couple of run out chances that went astray, was right up to the best levels that have been associated with the Proteas over the last three decades. Appropriately, it was Miller’s 50th catch in T20 International cricket.

The Proteas fielded three debutants of whom Bavuma was the pick. His ability to run smartly between the wickets and turn one’s into two’s is a special talent while the left-arm spinner, Bjorn Fortuin, could also be satisfied with his outing.

As was the case with all the quicker bowlers in the match Anrich Nortje was expensive but he revealed enormous potential in pushing the speed gun close to the 150km/h mark and the experience will have done him the world of good.

Right now its Pant who is in the team and performing badly. How about you talk about him and forget about my life for once?

You said you are not a Pant fan yet you are the first one who starts crying whenever I criticise him. Why is that? This guy is wasting the most important position of number 4 in the LOI teams and you want people to keep quiet and don't talk about your boy lol. He should start batting at 8 then nobody will give a damn about this tullaybaaz. :inti

Quinton de Kock, who led South Africa for the first time in Twenty20 Internationals, conceded India read conditions much better following a seven-wicket defeat in the second T20I at Mohali on Wednesday.

South Africa, who arrived in the country one week prior to the series opener in Dharamsala, were geared up for that one, but as fate had it, the match ended was abandoned without a ball being bowled.

Put into bat in Mohali, De Kock gave South Africa a good start smashing a 37-ball 52, but following his departure, the innings tapered as they were restricted to 149/5 after 20 overs.

The side included three debutants in Temba Bavuma, who missed out on a maiden T20I fifty by one run, left-arm spinner Bjorn Fortuin and pacer Anrich Nortje.

“We got off to a good start and towards the end they bowled pretty well and they assessed the conditions better than we did. There was a lot of pressure on some of the new guys and I think they did pretty well against this world-class opposition,” De Kock said at the post-match presentation ceremony.

Defending their below par target, South Africa’s pacers Kagiso Rabada and Nortje were not to effective which is why De Kock was forced to take the second option – pace off the ball – which worked.

“KG (Kagiso Rabada) upfront tried to pick up wickets and unfortunately, with pace on the ball it looked easier to bat on and pace off the ball seemed to be the better option on this wicket. I was quite hungry to get out there and hopefully next time we do better than what we did today with the bat,” De Kock said.

I won't be harsh on 21 year olds. He deserves time. He already proved in Tests. Matter of time he figures his game out. T20 internationals are waste of time. IPL >>>> T20 internationals. ODI is where he has to improve. He will improve. If he can't improve he should be replaced. You have been gunning for his head since his debut lol so you have an agenda.

Well done, India. I don't see India losing any game in this series.

This present South African team is toothless.

Good win for India. South Africa trying to experiment with some new players is a positive for them.

Those same 21 year old blah blah blah excuses. It seems he is going to keep getting selected on the basis of those 2 hundreds in test cricket out of which one was in the lost cause in a dead rubber match. You are no better than Umar Akmal fans. They also used to give these young age excuses. Find some other excuses please. :inti

He is in as a wicket keeper. He is the promising among the lot. Isan Kishan will run away moment he sees a genuine quick bowler. Others are makeshift keepers. Samson is a frontfoot plonker.

He should be dropped from the LOI teams as soon as possible. I said the exact same thing about KL Rahul after England tour last year. I wanted him out of the test team because when you are performing poorly in one format you are going to take that poor form to other formats as well. Same thing is happening with Pant. He has performed poorly in LOI's so far. And his test average also dropped after the test series in West Indies.

It took you one match to call samson a front foot plonker but I can't call Pant a tullaybaaz after watching the way he played in his first series followed by other series?

And you want me to not discourage a 21 year old Pant but in your opinion Kishan who is another 21 year old will run away after seeing genuine quick bowlers. Mind you he hasn't even played a single match for India so far. Can you see your double standards and hypocrisy clearly now? :inti

I have been seeing samson for years. HIs game is exactly the same. Just plants his frontfoot and swings through the line.

if you are 21 and you are good enough to start then you should. Pant has been underperforming so it's time to drop him in odi and t20. If you are good enough then you are good enough at any age.

Some are early bloomers and some are late bloomers like ishant and shami for instance. We don't have to stick with pant. But Samson is trash and so is kishan the little pee wee. Go put on some muscle mass first. both of you.

Its going to be a long series for SA.

Miller is pretty useless these days- he doesn't fire much at all.

One bad phase in our batting let us down' – Bavuma

www.icc-cricket.com

Chasing a target of 150 on Wednesday, 16 September, India, riding on skipper Virat Kohli's unbeaten 72, completed the task with an over to spare. Bavuma, who had scored 49 on T20I debut, blamed the loss of momentum in their batting innings for the defeat.

Bavuma had put on 57 for the second wicket with skipper Quinton de Kock and with eight wickets in hand for the final eight overs, South Africa seemed on course for a par score. However, a disciplined bowling effort by the hosts restricted them. They had just one boundary between overs 12 and 15, while overs 17, 18 and 19 yielded just 11 runs.

"There was just one phase that we let ourselves down," said Bavuma. "And a quality side like theirs is going to make us pay.

"Just after the halfway stage, when David [Miller] came in at the 13th over, I was thinking 180 was on the cards and that would be a good score," he added. "That's where we failed a bit in our batting cause. I wasn't really able to get the momentum going so maybe I was to blame because the platform was set for the big-hitters."

They are a formidable side but I do not think they are unbeatable.

Temba Bavuma

Bavuma, however, insisted the visitors weren't completely outplayed, and is keen to build on the positives. "They are a formidable side, but I do not think they are unbeatable. There will always be moments in the game where we can win and for us it's more about being aware of those moments and making sure that we're in the right mental space to seize them."

Bavuma's innings was cut short by Deepak Chahar, who conceded only three runs in the 18th over to pull things back for India. Chahar, who had produced a match-winning spell of 3/4 in the last T20I on the West Indies tour, backed it up with another clinical performance, finishing with 2/22.

"We had played against the South Africa A side prior to this series and that helped me plan things," Chahar said. "I had worked on my yorkers and also slow ball variations.

"When Bavuma was playing, I knew which ball to bowl at him. He is strong against short bowling, so my focus was to try variations in my pace and make him play forward and I am happy that it helped the team.”

Chahar said he prefers bowling at the death more than with the new ball. "I see bowling in death overs as easier, as compared to the bowling in the Powerplay or in the middle overs," he explained. "I always think that there are two fielders outside the circle when I am bowling and I plan accordingly."
