What's new

India (587 & 427/6d) defeat England (407 & 271) by 336 runs in 2nd Test at Edgbaston

Good day for India. Good thing is that akashdeep and Siraj can bowl long spell . :kp

Stumps

England needs 536 runs from 90 overs on day 5

Require rate 5.95

Achievable

That was with kookaburra ball.
Look at the massive totals pre-Kookaburra rounds in April and May.

It's why we're seeing draw after draw in both divisions of CC.

ECB forgetting VARIETY is the key. West Indies in the 80s and Australia in the 90s had so much variety in their domestic surfaces which meant their players were accustomed to all conditions when they transitioned to Test cricket.

Uniformity is not the way to go.

In order for England to win, they need 4 batters to score 150 round about.

I doubt that'll happen even with Brook Bradman.

If 90 overs are played , India should win this , because English batters no longer can control the game , they keep on looking for boundaries , and it takes one mistake to get out. India needs 7 balls in right areas to win this. Only rain can save them here , but its temporary , soon this temperament will cost them heavily , possibly in next few tests.

Gill-inspired India leave England facing defeat

England lost three top-order wickets before the close as India surged towards victory in the second Test after their captain Shubman Gill's run-fest continued at Edgbaston.

Faced with the choice of batting for a draw or going after a chase of a near-impossible 608, Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett and Joe Root all fell to leave the hosts 72-3 at the end of day four.

Crawley played a wild drive in the second over to be caught for a duck and Duckett hit five boundaries before being bowled by Akash Deep for a 15-ball 25.

The electric Deep, who has thrilled with the new-ball in his first Test in England, then struck the crucial blow by sensationally bowling Root for six.

England had been kept in the field until 90 minutes before the finish as Gill followed his epic 269 in the first innings with a dismissive 161 which allowed India to declare on 427-6.

He is the first player to record scores in excess of 250 and 150 in the same Test while his overall haul of 430 this week is the second-highest in Test history.

Despite the forecast of morning rain, Gill's side are now overwhelming favourites to secure the win on day five that would level this series at 1-1.

Decision time for England
England, meanwhile, have an intriguing day ahead. That they do not play for draws has been one of the pillars of their cricket under Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum.

But now, for the first time under this regime, they are faced with a situation where a successful chase is almost certainly out of the question.

They have made 378, 373, 299, 296, 279 in the fourth innings to win under Stokes but the highest chase in Test history is 418.

That leaves the draw as their most likely way of preserving their series lead going to Lord's next week.

Gill's declaration came later than it could have – perhaps fearing England's ability to chase – but the tourists have still left themselves the option of the new ball after tea on day four.

While that weapon allowed Deep to find significant movement late on, when the ball has gone soft batting has looked far easier.

England's tactics may be even more interesting than the eventual result.

Puppet captain making most of the flat wicket. Now his average has increased from 35 to 43.

He gets my vote if he manages to score on seaming & green wickets if England provide those in upcoming matches.

Akash Deep was brilliant today, deserves those wickets for toiling hard in domestic cricket for last 5-6 years.

Good thing India aren't missing Bumrah which is good news going forward.

Most probably India will go 1-1 to Lord's next week.

Going by that Siraj is the best bowler in the world lol THis is a stupid take. INdia was 211/5 at one point.

Failed in both innings. I know you've slithered back into your little hidey hole. But fortunately , there are 3 more Tests when you can pop out and come up with better, smarter refrains than the one above.

You are one 1-0 down but talking like a veggie mahabarthra king . India will lose this series , you stick around.

India bowled well , excellent cricket in the last part of the day but they England a chance by a poor declaration. If England draw it will go down as one of the most cowardly declarations in test history

Guess India want England to play for a draw which is unlike Bazball.

Makes no sense, with 500 runs you want team to play aggressive , more chances to take 10
Wickets.

India should win this now due to poor decision to bowl and a brilliant last hour on day 4 with the ball . England deserve to lose , but if they somehow save the test , it will be worse than the record run chase in the 1st

England now totally have to play convenitonal cricket. Also Indian bowlers cannot be used indefenitely. So they didn't want them to bowl a lot more overs in a single evening.

It's still possible to draw this Test if you are any decent team except Bazball maniacs

No Bairstow, no party for England
===
It's exactly three years since England pulled off the highest chase in their Test history against India at Edgbaston 🔥

But it is because India has only 2 bowlers. SO they have to manage them smartly. Cannot give them long breaks. If India had a decent 3rd seamer things would have been different. TIring these two out will help England salvage a draw easily as the old ball does absolutely nothing.

Don't worry you don't need any bowlers here, when the Bazball stars are ready to throw their wickets...one should not be that dump as Bazball gang. It's nice to attack but they need to be pragmatic too

I thought Root was all set for 300. Root is a softy and when there is little bit pressure he never performed. :kp

Wonder if that crucial catch that Siraj couldn't pull off will turn out to be the game changer here.

Could've had Eng 4 down...

This match can exposed lots of people's, who said india is totally dependent on Bumrah and without Bumrah india can't win.

Now same poster saying this is bad for Bumrah .lol

They are changing the Goalpost with every day.

This is embarassing for them . Good India go smashed the England tullebaaz as well delusional posters.

:kp

it is still India's batting that is keeping things tight... Bwoling is still pretty ordinary

If bowling can reduce England to 83-5 and 50-3 on a highway means bowling is preety good.

And only two bowlers bowl well rest are garbage . All the 13 England wickets taken by Siraj and akashdeep so far , Imagine little bit support from others bowlers?

That's why Kuldeep selection is going to be Very important along with Bumrah for next test.

Nitish Reddy and Prasidh Krishna - both are useless so replacing them with Kuldeep and Bumrah will massive strengthen Indian bowling attacks .

Flukes happen. It was just india's day. BGT and the 1st test painted a picture.

Going off ove one match wonders means nothing.

Lastly it's not embarrassing. Cricket is just a sport, I dont care much about it. Not my fault you treat it like a lifeline and vanished to apply for a job for 5 days 😣

Weather has taken bad turn. I am now in South of England now but hearing its raining in Midlands. Forecast saying it will only stop by 1pm.

Even if this test match gets washed out, I am not too fussed. India has implicted mental scar on England going into Lords test. Saturday (Day 3) of Lords test is one of the sporting highlight of UK summer along with Wimbledon final, British Grand Prix and Royal Ascot. It is suppose to be 31 degrees that day. Cant wait...no rain can save Poms then.

Gill and Jadeja wasting those crucial 10-15 overs with Tuk Tuk have saved Eng from their biggest defeat in history...

Gambhir in the stands making a face like this was his plan all along :ROFLMAO:
Hope IND can win on this horrid pitch .
Just 3 days gap between this & next , wonder what set of bowlers ENG will field .

Its a dead wicket and the ball will go soft in about 8-9 overs.

Looking at it in pure isolation, it will not be difficult for 2 set batters to play 50-60 over partnership. Conditions are in batters favour.

It is only mental game and India needs to induce 5 errors to win game. Eng need to make 4 or less.

Updates from cricbuzz - The rain appears to have stopped for now but the hover cover is in place :kp

I don't think rain will impact play significantly.

It will be a sorry end to the match if it is rained off.

cover is back on , the hover gets its wings out and now the entire square is covered. Lights are on.

Not a great sign for india but good news for England. Rain may saved them.

Unlikely game start on schedule time which is 20 minutes from now on

:kp

England team are doing a prayer for rain.

Bumrah is also praying for it :ROFLMAO:
Why should he ? He is Fully supporting to all the bowler's and even choose the ball for the Indian bowler's. ( Just before the declaration)

He is very humble and Unlike others team player's ,there is no differences between him and Other player's.

:kp

Why are eng dishing out flat pitches for Indians, any bog standard English wicket India won’t cross 150

If India won't cross 150 on any pitch means England tullebaaz will not cross even 100.

England is scared of Bumrah and Other Pacers so they are giving flat wickets.

Indian bowling is better than English bowling in any condition at anywhere in the World

Yeah that's the thing Eng won score more than a 100 on those wickets, so its a double edged sword.... Plus Joe Rooty needs as many flat tracks as possible to get close to Tendulkar. 😇

If England thinks playing for a draw looks weak and boring, they're stupid. Draw is better than a loss. It lets you continue the 1-0 lead. India did right in prolonging the declaration yesterday, now it's on England to do the right thing. Pitch like this should get a demerit.

Indian fans thought their team played a masterstroke by declaring when they did and getting 3 wickets before close of play

Now look lol. The final day will be badly impacted by rain.

Should have declared before tea yesterday. That's what I would have done but I'm a captain with an attacking mindset.

Gill, Gambhir are the musketeers behind the decision.

No chance of rain. Full play will happen. :kp
60% chance of showers tomorrow. What is holding back brave India from declaring?
Typical ignorant stuff from my Indian brother @Devadwal . You are sitting somewhere in India and arguing about rain with someone who lives 15 minutes away from the cricket ground.

There will be play later on in the day, where Indians lost the match was yesterday, shouldve declared 15 overs before Tea. Now it looks like they wont have enough time even if play resumes in a few hours.

From cricbuzz -Down to a drizzle now and some work has begun on top of the covers," is the latest from the ground. "Looks brighter now," :kp

Still can't believe India declared so late with rain forecast.
In fact I was in shock when I saw the scorecard last evening.
How and why did India think England can chase anything above 500?

Become much brighter now, the lights are off too... But umbrellas are still up in the stands. Super soppers are draining the water off the sheets right now. Some puddles on the far end but it doesn't seem concerning, they expect to get it fixed quickly enough"

:kp

More rain happening now. Commies saying ground staff are pessimistic :kp

here's an update from ground ,that would bring a smile on all the Indian fans and tear for wannabe England fans "It has stopped raining. Brightened up too. Now to drain the water and dry the outfield. The first cover has come off, at the far end"

:kp

Rain affected results are honestly just crap for cricket.

Part and parcel of the game. This possibly could be the consequences where Jadeja Gill yesterday where going
No where for a full hour and half. And it may come to bite india where the sun doesn't shine.

Saying it part and parcel of the game is just something we cricket fans are accustomed to now. Yes it is part and parcel but it really shouldn't be.

It doesn’t matter what cricket they play now , perfect bowling conditions on day 5 , should be all over my tea . You always want the batting team to play attacking in 4th innings when needing 10 wickets . This is a myth England being defensive is easier to take those wickets.

They starred the game as soon as rain stop in The last game but here they are taking the time. England is really scared 🤣 :kp

Oops

Update 11:55 am local

Covers are back on. Drizzle has started again.

Why are wannabe England supporters crying so hard that it's showing on the ground .lol
