My money is on India, just.

A par score is 300, and with the new ball due shortly it seems that the Kiwis will fall below par too.

My guess?

India 165
New Zealand 265
India 360
New Zealand 230 all out

NZ to score 400+ here.
Only if India bowl terribly.

The new ball is just 8 overs away and the tail is longer than usual with Santner out.

This is the sort of position that Pakistan used to win from. Consider Hamilton 1992-93:

Pakistan 216
New Zealand 264
Pakistan 174 (at 39-5 they were still 9 runs behind)
New Zealand 93 all out chasing 127 to win.

Wasim Akram took 5-45 and Waqar Younis 5-22 as New Zealand collapsed from 65-3 to 93 all out, to lose by 33 runs.

That is the standard against which Bumrah and Shami and Ishant need to be measured.

And it’s why some of the recent criticisms of Waqar’s career are absurd.

Good start for India with an early wicket.

And here we had some fans doing bhangra over beating depleted SL and BD sides at home. This is the standard we need to get back to and be measured against.

This is some pathetic batting from us.

Lot of gifts when they should have taken a 200+ run lead and batted India out of the game.

India haven't even bowled well this innings.

Need CdG and Jamieson to deliver today if we're to get a decent lead.

How long has Dar been this bad?

I've read a lot of criticism for him on here.

India appealing for everything.

Think he hit his pad, atleast that's what it sounded like.

Ishant has been a class above every other Indian bowler.

Bowling some real peaches.

Looks like that appeal was on Pant.

The game is on knife edge - kiwis will need to double this lead for a significant advantage; india has second new ball in four overs time.

It's on this pair, CdG on his day can score clutch runs.

Southee should never have batted above Jamieson.

He throws his wicket away and is a slogger.

Early days but I like what I see from Jamieson.

Good with ball and handy with the bat, can score quick and is a fighter with bat and ball.

You gotta be kidding me right? That NZ team didn't have a single notable bat except probably Greatbatch who himself was average at best. Taylor alone is better than that entire line up and not even talking about Williamson and Watling. This is almost like comparing the Flower brothers' Zim with the current one. Ludicrous and makes no sense.

With all due respect to Wasim and Waqar they would not have found it that easy if they were up against this current NZ batting.

Very quick change from Kohli, should have given Bumrah couple of overs more.

It's going to be great to bat here from the second session with the sun out and the new ball seen off.

100 runs can be knocked off for 1-2 wickets.

Bowling short and leaking runs. Should have rather contained and waited for new ball.

CdG playing some classy shots.

He's our Rohit, has all the shots and talent.

Temperament and shot selection is his issue.

I really am enjoying this finely balanced Test.

New Zealand is the opposite of Pakistan: a team with very little talent but good organisation. Usually they are a 8/10 team at home and 4/10 away, but they have gone into a transitional period of decline and are currently only a 5/10 team.

India have been close to the top in a very weak era, but they are a 9/10 team at home but only 3/10 away. If they had more humility they would prepare properly for overseas Test series. But consider the two tours of England in 2018. Pakistan arrived early and literally practised in a public park, then drew 1-1. India refused to do that, believing they know best, and after they tried to score over 400 to win a Test instead of saving it lost 4-1.

India should win Tests like today’s because the gulf in talent is vast. But Bumrah and Shami keep bowling ridiculous lengths and are really hurting their team. You need to adapt before a series, not during it.

Not even watching the match but saw on cricinfo that this jamie guy hit 4 sixes.
rah.
he's taking the game away from India

Anybody else remember Tim Southees debut? Jamieson is bringing back memories of that.

I dont understand why Ashwin is bowling from this end. Footmarks at the other end.

As i type this Bmac brings it up in commentary.

Good analysis. It is sad that current team has been compared to the world beater teams like aussies and windies of the past when they are really far from it. No doubt absolute champions at home but nothing good abroad. Gives more weight to the fact that the Australian win was a fluke and an outlier.

India is not going to win this test from here, and I don’t care if indians have 11 kohlis batting.

Jamieson is really going to be dropped for the next Test lol.

Idk who Jamieson stays in the team for.

Southee has taken wickets too.

Just drop Ajaz. Its rough but hes unlikely to do much at Hagley and Jamieson has played a lot of games there.

How did you come to the conclusion that the 2Ws would have struggled here? Just because of looking at the batting averages?

Boult is the GOAT #11 batsmen.

Think he has the record for most runs and sixes at 11 too.

"Boult thinks he's the best against spin in the team"

:))) :))) :)))

Interesting that CDG walked when India had no reviews remaining. Honest guy it seems.

Aman NZ not far from your prediction of 350. though some posters where ridiculing you.

how do you know they woudlnt. this n.z is formidable at home.

world class team at home. They can beat anyone. 11 series wins 2 losses. You need to be a really good team to draw or beat them away especially after losing the toss.

I love how the number 11 is farming the strike and protecting the number 10 atm.

NZ is so far ahead that they should win this test comfortably.

Chris Martin is at the ground today he must of given Trent Boult a few words of advice.

jamieson scoring 44 was a bit annoying. boult with his antics annoyed india as well. Now it's up to batsmen to bat out in innings 2. Certainly possible. But it will be tough obviously.

Nz tailenders are better than our batsman.

Looks like their tail is better than their batsmen as well.... I think Indian bowlers took it easy, waiting for wickets to fall. What Kiwis did is kept swinging bat instead of blocking. It connected well today.

NZ have probably done enough to ensure at least a draw. They are unlikely to lose this game now unless they collapse badly in 2nd innings.

Lead should have been 83 not 183 especially after NZ were 7 down for 227.
looks like the indians haven't learnt anything from the SA, eng, Aus (Adelaide test) tour.
Not sure whose fault it is, Captain or the bowlers!!
