Should be a competitive game between two well balanced teams.

I don't think there is a clear favorite here.

colin de grandhomme gives new zealand a slight edge.

also bumrah is coming off injured and was poor in odi series, shami also has been overbowled in limited overs.
test match pitches in nz are very flat, so alot of bowling has to be done. indian quicks may break down.

If India is batting first most probably will wake up to see 5/34or all done for 176

India have lost 8 of their last 9 Test series in SENA.

They won their last one, but Aus were without Smith and Warner.

India bowled out under 180 here if they bat first.

no neil wagner is a massive blow for nz.

have a feeling ashwin will bowl well this match

They have to leave as much balls as possible in first session but our openers play attacking game ..not easy here..The match can be lost within a session here..I will be happy if we can score 250 in first inning..

Given what I saw of Pant and Agarwal in the ODIs, I don't see them faring too well here. Both looked pretty ordinary against the moving ball and didn't last, will only be harder against the red ball in favorable conditions and going a lot longer.

Man if CdG runs through India after the grief they gave Pakistan for the 5fer on debut :)))

Their job is to not let MO face the newish ball.
I'll be surprised and disappointed if we don't have at least 2 wickets in the first session. Boult and Southee will need to bowl pretty bad not to.

Is Saha injured?Except for him I have no issues with the team..

Agarwal is a good bat , can't say the same for pant ...

Prithvi?

Always get Pant and Shaw mixed up..

Shaw will have harder job as he will open the inning. Don't see him succeeding now considering his inexperience but let's see. Not too convinced with Agarwal also but he has more experience than Shaw.

This can be 75 all out or something situation?

yes. You can't practice anywhere these kinds of scenarios. You just have to suck it up and find a way. I remember India team that had guys like Dravid, Tendulkar folded for 99 runs i think on day one against Tuffy. But responded by bowling them out for 94 runs.

How is Pant starting ahead of Saha ? And Ashwin starting ? Did not expect those two selections but atleast shores up the batting. Looks like a 50/5 kind of pitch and hope we survive first session.

Always a pleasure watching Boult with a red cherry on a pitch like this.

Pretty much all lineups fail in these conditions.

ball is barely carrying to the keeper one ball and bouncing the next, does this have safrican variable bounce? . better than the typical flat road pitch that nz usually serves up

It is typical at basin reserve. It is the movement that batsmen in not the pace. It will quicken up as the game goes on.

Bowled. pitched straight. Ball didn't even do anything. Just straight ball. How the heck he missed it.

Well, started watching late - first ball, absolute beauty, almost unplayable leg-cutter. I think, if Shaw was better batsman, he would have edged it to 2nd slip!!!!!!

Damn India missed bowling in this day 1 pitch in the morning. They might bowl late in the evening today.

But Ishant and Shami specialise in bowling short anyway. That usually doesn’t work on Day 1 at the Basin.

Ishant doesn't even bowl back of length that much anymore, leave along short.

Looks like the ball is going to continue moving for 40 overs or so. Conditions, pitch always favor the seamers.

Better to squeeze out whatever little rohit sharma has for test cricket and make him open for a few years

Prithvi is not ready for tests.

Shaw too eager to play his shots. Missed a straight delivery by miles.

He looked good when he played his shots.

Kiwis are not capitalising the toss win, bowling too short here. They have to take 4 before lunch to make that call count - didn’t have much choice either as well, batting first against Indian trio, Kiwis could have gone to first lunch at 62-5.

thats why i always say bowling speeds are overrated. Speed off the pitch can ready totally different. bumrah's 140 will be a lot quicker than a 145 from say a wahab or even a Ferguson.

jamieson's 135 is a lot quicker than a 139-140 from someone like say a Gabriel.

This is the kind of wicket that is very common in the first session , first day. He didn't do a lot wrong there. Just kissed the edge.
