India reach 146/3 at close of a truncated Day 2 of the World Test Championship final

Extremely lazy stroke, no wonder he averages so low away from home.

Badly needed for NZ. Jamieson the game changer.

These Rohit backfoot drives are quality.

Problem is he's going to do something stupid in 3...2....

Not much was stupid in that..You get that much edge in these conditions. Good inning but didn't made it count big.

Its an ICC match...so they have not left any grass for game to last long. Yes there is overcast assistance for seamers but not much from the pitch.

England series will be different when ECB would be in charge. Expect lots of green wickets.

Is this 5 day test match because it rained off first day.

Rohit will fail in asking conditions. Pujara and Virat are the key wickets.

If India put 350 they are winning this.

That's about as much we can expect from Rohit opening in England. Gave a very good start.

This is what Gavaskar had to say about India batting

'He might shift to 7': Gavaskar says India should make a change to their WTC XI due to weather conditions in Southampton

Legendary India cricketer Sunil Gavaskar feels India should make a change to their playing XI for the World Test Championship final against New Zealand after rain washed out the opening day.

Continuous rain from Thursday evening at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton meant there was no play possible on Friday. The reserve day (June 23) will come into play if needed to make up for the loss of time and overs.

India had announced their playing XI on the eve of the WTC final, which included five bowlers – two spinners and three seamers – in Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami and Ishant Sharma. Gavaskar now believes India should play an extra batsman seeing the weather conditions.

"Yes, that's the thing. See, they might have announced the team yesterday, [but] nothing is finalized until the captains share the sheets with each other during the toss. So, you can change the team till the very last moment. As a captain, when I used to be confused between playing a spinner or an extra batsman, I used to see the opposition's eleven and scratch and change the team on my paper just before the toss. So, the eleven can be changed any time before the toss,” Sunil Gavaskar told Aaj Tak.

Pujara can remain rooted to the crease and being very static. I think that's why he struggles a bit in England.

Needs to come forward or play back.

We still have the reserve day

NZ should have played Matt Henry?

Nah it was the right decision these four seamers have been so good for us the last two years.

I would of considered playing Henry over Boult since he has become to white ball orientated with this lower arm action. But its a big call to drop your top wicket taker.

Jamieson is a real deal. 6'5'' generates bounce and swing there making it harder for our batsmen.

The point of impact of the batsmen playing the ball this morning has been a couple of metres down the crease, which underlines the tactic to negate the swing by advancing down the wicket.

However, Sharma's dismissal shows the pitfalls of such an approach whereby batsmen that aren't used to moving their feet are prone to be off-balance when striking the ball away from the body.

It's a different approach to the one applied by Williamson, for example, who'd generally want to play the ball as late as possible under his eyes.

Gill out. Indian battes' struggles with balls outside off stump continue.

That's a strong comeback from NZ. This is probably why they went with four genuine pacer. You know all four are quality in these conditions and they will ultimately make it count.

I was hoping Gill to play his authoritative pull shot against Wagner. But gone on an outside edge.

This NZ bowling attack is relentless rather than devastating. They just persist and work away at taking wickets.

Both openers not making it count after getting set, throwing away the advantage....poor stuff

Similar to Edgebaston 2018.

Vijay and Dhawan gave a good start and then currant came on to undo all of it.

It's also a tactic that works only against bowlers with less speed , release height and when theres little seam movement . So it worked against Boult/Southee/CDG on a pitch not offering much lateral movement but against Jamieson you cant pull that off with the bounce he generates. It's why Gill got clocked in the head. Our batting philosophy will never change despite failures

Indian team would really like Kohli to perform here.

I agree, it won't work against Wagner either. I'd be interested to see the point of impact of batsmen hitting the ball off Jamieson, it's likely to be a bit back in the crease. Batting technique can't be one-dimensional.

There is swing obviously due to the Dukes ball and overhead conditions. But there isn't much seam movement in the wicket. And there is decent bounce and pace, which the curator promised before the match. The hot conditions leading up to the match probably resulted in that.

Shami may not be a bad pick in these conditions. Bumrah and Shami will enjoy the bounce and the bit of pace in the wicket. And spinners always enjoy bounce in the wicket.

India’s bowling has been really good in WTC and conditions are supportive for pace bowling (Weather’s forecast is cloudy for almost all the days) so India will be in the game even with anything around 250. Though its a bit surprising that India didnt go with a 4th seamer considering the overhead conditions.

Kane Williamson missed the trick of not bringing Boult against Kohli.

Weakens the batting with a 4th seamer.

This would have been an absolute cracker of a test match. Two high class teams with high class bowling attacks..

But we'll most likely see just two innings of it thanks to English "summer".

Pretty even first session. NZ will be kicking themselves with how wayward they were early on with the new ball.

1 innings the way pujara has started :)) weathers fine you will maybe miss some overs on Monday but majority of the game will be played.

There was possibly a case to include Thakur in the squad. Not sure what exactly Umesh Yadav offers to the squad in terms of different combinations India can make especially when they already had 4 frontline seamers (Looks to be more to do with the thinking that Yadav deserves it as he has been an important member in WTC). Thakur can bat a bit, yes his bowling has limitations but okay enough to be a 4th option under these conditions.

street cricketer I guess NZ having 3 lefties in the top 7 kind of made Ashwin a must have. On the other hand Jadeja’s batting for in last couple of years along with obviously his bowling control made India go with both. A tough call under the conditions but, this combination had enough reasons going for it as well I guess.
