England have announced their playing XI for the rescheduled fifth Test against India at Edgbaston starting Friday, 1 July.

James Anderson has been declared fit for the Test against India at Edgbaston. The veteran star sustained an ankle injury that kept him out of the final Test against New Zealand but a well-rested Anderson is fit and raring to go against India.

Sam Billings will don the gloves behind the stumps for England in the absence of Ben Foakes. Foakes was in a race against time to be fit for the Test after testing positive for Covid-19 in the middle of the third Test against New Zealand in Headingley.

Playing XI: Alex Lees, Zak Crawley, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Jonny Bairstow, Ben Stokes (c), Sam Billings (w), Matthew Potts, Stuart Broad, Jack Leach, James Anderson.

England are trailing 2-1 in the series against India currently but the current team is a whole different side than the one that was in disarray a year ago.

India have named Jasprit Bumrah as their captain for the rescheduled fifth Test against England in Edgbaston after Rohit Sharma was ruled out.

Bumrah will lead India in Edgbaston in what will be the first time he will lead the national side in any format. He is also set to make history as the first pacer to captain India in Tests since the legendary Kapil Dev in 1987. Rishabh Pant has been named vice-captain.

Addressing the pre-match press conference, Bumrah said on being named the captain, "It is a big achievement, big honour. It was my dream to play Test cricket. It is a big achievement that I have gotten the honour to lead the country. It is the biggest achievement of my career. I am very happy."

Rohit tested positive for Covid-19 last week during the warm-up game against Leicestershire. Though he played the first innings, he was forced into isolation after testing positive and did not take part in the second innings.

"Mr Rohit Sharma, Captain, Indian Cricket Team is ruled out of the rescheduled fifth Test against England to be played from Friday," a BCCI release said. "Rohit underwent a RAT Test on Thursday morning and returned a positive result for COVID-19.

"The All-India Senior Selection Committee has named Mr Jasprit Bumrah as captain for the upcoming Test and Mr Rishabh Pant as his deputy."

Rohit's absence will be a massive blow for India. Apart from being the captain, Rohit had shown tremendous form during the first part of the series last year, scoring 368 runs, including a century in the fourth Test.

India have announced Mayank Agarwal as cover for Rohit. Given there is no quarantine for international travellers, Agarwal has already travelled to England and has linked up with the Test squad.

Having only made his Test debut in 2018, Bumrah has quickly become one of the most important players in India's red-ball sides. He has played just 29 Tests, but is already the leader of the pace attack, and occupies the No.3 position in the MRF Tyres ICC Test Bowler's rankings.

He was the vice-captain in the ODI leg of India's tour of South Africa, with KL Rahul captaining in Rohit's absence. He was also the deputy to Rohit during the Test and T20I series against Sri Lanka.

Should India win or draw in Birmingham, they would secure their first Test series victory in England since 2007. There are also crucial ICC World Test Championship points at stake, with India currently sitting at No.3 in the standings.

However, England have looked a much-improved side under the leadership of the new captain-coach duo of Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum, as evidenced by their 3-0 victory over reigning ICC World Test Championship holders New Zealand.

The Test will begin in Edgbaston on 1 July.

England are favorites to win this one. They have the momentum after beating Kiwis 3-0.

Looking forward to the game, rain is however scheduled for Friday and Saturday at the moment, hope this doesnt ruin it.

England should decimate India here.
They have got the momentum they have got the players in the form.
Zak Crawley is a weak link.Ben foakes is a big miss both with the bat and gloves.

agreed but india cant be written off. their young guns are good. bowling in particular.

England should steamroll India considering the form that they were in against the Kiwis. But we never know how will they fare against a different opposition.

Don’t write off India or underestimate them. They could easily win this. England are in the early stages of recovery within their Test setup and they still have a lot of work to do.

Weather permitting England should win this one. They shouldn't take India lightly though but i do expect them to take them.

If we win, we would be the undisputed best team of this generation and best team on current form with test series wins in Australia, England, Sri Lanka and West Indies and not lost anything at home.

Australia drew in England, yet to beat India and lost last time in South Africa in the sandpaper series and also have lost home series to India and South Africa.

New Zealand, England, South Africa and Pakistan are clearly behind.

Kohlis india is already the best ever Asian team of all time.

Undoubtedly, the team between 2015-2021 especially the one in 2020 Australia tour as it was the most incredible win of all.

Some facts going into this match :-

Joe Root is the leading run scorer with 564 runs in this series. 2nd and 3rd are Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul, both not playing this game. Root is probably gonna take the player of series irrespective of the result.

Ollie Robinson is the leading wicket taker with 21 wickets. Jasprit Bumrah is a close second with 18 wickets at a better average of 20. Anderson has 15 test wickets at 24.

England will miss Ollie Robinson. Was easily the biggest challenge for India last year.

I feel England is being overrated alot lmao. Will be funny if India rolls them despite being unprepared.

Would be interesting to watch how Eng apply their batting tactics of taking it to the opponent against Indian attack which has more pace and more variety then NZ offered in the series.

Ravi Shastri saying in Sky Sports that he wanted to finish the 5th test last year with back up players.

Should we trust him?

I firmly opposed that time when Indian team ran away like cowards

Rob Key asked a key question to Shastri that even now India has covid in their camp with Sharma down. But still India playing this test match. Why they didn't play in September last year?

Good question

I am glad that England have not given Bairstow the gloves back. He has scored heavily since returning to his best spot at #5.

As if Rob Key, Ravi Shastri and others don't know the real reason why they postponed that test. :kp

His combination of swing and lift is very effective. I would call him our best bowler when fit.

Shastri should have asked Key why ECB pulled team out of Pakistan for no reason at all.

Everyone is aware why they ran away but I think Brits want to extract the truth from Shastri's mouth.

We could have won the game and series last year when the momentum was with us. Against this England side and that too with our best batsman (KL Rahul) out...literally no chance here.

If it rains out...we will win the series though

:srini

Chalk and cheese comparison. England NEVER went to Pakistan in the 1st place. India was there, played 4 test matches, was roaming around all over the country..going to book launch etc and then left overnight for Dubai to play IPL keeping authorities uninformed.

Both situtations are very different.

India have never won a Test match at Edgbaston. England have 0-6 track record at Edgbaston.

India v England Test results at Edgbaston :

1967 : Lost
1974 : Lost
1979 : Lost
1986 : Draw
1996 : Lost
2011 : Lost
2018 : Lost
2018 :????

England won the toss and bowling.

We lost another toss :))

Change in captaincy dosen't matter...losing toss is permanent

England: 1 Alex Lees, 2 Zak Crawley, 3 Ollie Pope, 4 Joe Root, 5 Jonny Bairstow, 6 Ben Stokes (capt.), 7 Sam Billings, 8 Matthew Potts, 9 Stuart Broad, 10 Jack Leach, 11 James Anderson

India: 1 Shubman Gill, 2 Cheteshwar Pujara, 3 Hanuma Vihari, 4 Virat Kohli, 5 Shreyas Iyer, 6 Rishabh Pant (wk), 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 Shardul Thakur, 9 Mohammed Shami, 10 Mohammed Siraj, 11 Jasprit Bumrah (capt.)

England win the toss and will bowl first.

Interesting decision by England at the toss.

Yes he is much better than bedser, sydney barnes and John snow. Only Fred trueman is better.

Since when is KL so good lmao

am sure we've lost 5 in 2018, one against nz in wtc finals , cant recall what was the score in 2021, and this one.
this has to be some sort of record for loss of consecutive tosses, in Eng at least.

Since when is KL so good lmao

Well, the truth is he is India's best batsman across all formats. Our batting strength is no where as good as in the past but among what we have KL Rahul is the best batsman.

Something for you to cherish

Nothing much for James Anderson here.
It will be seen if England have made a mistake by bowling first.

Hardly any genuine pace in Indian Attack. Both shami Bumrah are brisk fast- medium.

Fast medium? Bumrah can bowl up to 150 if he wants to. Same as rabada who has slowed down recently

Only starcy bowls 140-145 consistently on average. Lockie is more in the clinic.
New zealnd have total trundlers.

Nortje was quick. Post injury not the same.

We have ? Naseem is 140-145. Shaheen is fast medium. Rest are bang average.

England really need to expose this brittle Indian batting Line up.

Agreed. I think this is a very weak Indian batting side for sena conditions. One of the worst infact.
Bowling is good. Pant is overrated. He is very inconsistent. Swings like a wild goose. Mediocre player. Rizwan is better.

When was the last time bumrah was bowling 150k in tests? , no denying his quality but he aint genuine pace.

Big England fan here bud.

He did in England and vs lanka in India. Remember reverse swing ? Vs the same boldstow?
Ofcourse now things have changed because india is out of form.

No denying bumrah shami quality, but their not genuine pace.

Hardly any genuine pace in Indian Attack. Both shami Bumrah are brisk fast- medium.

Bumrah counts in fast/borderline fast category. Can bowl at 140+ kmph regularly. Anderson bowls 135-137 generally. Prasidh also is in fast category.

Actually problem is India may struggle against these trundlers in these conditions more than genuine pace of Archer or Wood unless they are bowling really well with control.

Great technique by Indian Batters and thats why they are the best

No they aren't the best batsmen. England are bowling tripe. I would say English batsmen, even south Africans have better technique vs swing.
India is only good vs pace.

I'd rather we get all them 20 sticks bowling at 140+ or thereabouts rather than be a 145kmph + show pony with nothing to show for in the W column. Jazz boom, Mo Shami & siraj service us wonderfully well - no qualms on that. However, i do wish Umraan was somewhere in the mix. His extra pace wold give our attack a different dimension. Like Shane Bond did to NZ in the early 2000's

Meanwhile Nasser is on about it swinging big when the shine comes off and probably hinting at reverse...

Gill needs to learn the art of leaving balls from the extremely versatile Kannaur Lokesh Rahul. :inti

I like Gill but he has somewhat disappointed after the highs of Brisbane still young though so can improve anytime.

I don't understand what's the fuss about this shubman gill.
He looks very mediocre and averages only 33 after 11 tests.

He is good vs pace, bounce and spin. Much like other Indian batters. Can't play swing and seam.

Exactly. He is a dud. Only played 2 good innings in Australia. Shafique, babar rizwan are far better.

Playing Vihari in tests after tests won't take our batting anywhere.

Poor from gill.
Broad looks tired after three games in a row.
Need another wicket want to see if kohli has anything still left in him

Make or break test for Pujara. Failure in this means his test career will be permanently over.

Why do india stick with this vihari duhari guys? Don't have better talent? Lol.
