What's new

India vs England | 1st Test | Ahmedabad | 16/11/12 | Day 2

All 3 bowlers from India so far has bowled very tight line and length (with occasional big turns for Ojha) to English openers. Thus far, Batters did well not to give away their wickets.

Fascinating contest this is.

Ashwin strikes and Compton gone

50 wickets for Ashwin in Test matches (in his 9th test) :14:

As nish pointed out, Bresnan should go home if he isn't interested... strikes anything? :))

Compton was playing like a night watchman too...no difference between him and anderson

Can Eng get to at least 321 to avoid the follow-on? I highly doubt it. Innings defeat me thinks.

Answer to the ultimate question? Are England worse on spinning decks than India are on seaming decks?

Why england players are not trying to score runs rather than defending every ball

Sehwag said England arent Bangladesh, well i can see the funny side of it now

LOL As expected. Happens when you cram your team with SA chokers and combine it with the usual fragility versus spin.

3 down 17 to go. Looks like the fat lady is getting set to put on a show. :wahab

England 3 down already (1 being a tail-ender) but even so its not looking clever here at all!

Cook and KP need to pretty much score big here to save england.

Good move by Dhoni to get pie-chucker on to bowl to KP.

English Batsmen against Spinners

Ashwin may not be Ajmal but he is still very handful in Indian conditions against most of the visiting batsmen. If he can get either of Cook or KP quickly then it will make our task very easy.

280 runs needed to avoid the follow-on with 7 wkts in hand.

Very good day in the end for India.

Still the wickets of Cook and KP are very crucial and need to be taken as early as possible when the play starts tomorrow.

Cook is a tough nut to crack and KP can really tear apart our spinners, if we get this partnership broken early tomorrow, follow-on could be a real possibility.

4 batsmen can potentially play spin well
2 are at the crease the other two being prior and patel.

So the real batting starts now :)

England have done well to lose only 3 wickets.., we should have declared 5-6 overs earlier! Could have got 2 more wickets!

They have no hope

I now even think they would struggle against bangla spinners as well

Hopeless

No need for a follow on...get Sehwag to terrorise Bressie the lassie a bit more...
Rest of England bowling attack deserves respect, but the Yorkie needs a lesson or 2.....

The celebrations are starting too early methinks.

KP still capable of playing the big innings...esp in a country he knows so well.

Cook is capable of the long innings too.

Obviously India are on top here...but a long way to go in this game still. Also - what is the point of selecting Umesh Yadav? Not even going to give him a bowl.

Pujara - great innings. But small criticism. Felt he allowed the game to meander along. Could have tried to hurry things along a bit once Dhoni/Ashwin got out. Instead was happy to accumulate. India ended up wasting a bit of time there. Not saying it will hurt them in this game, as in all probability England will fold early on the fifth day, but its just something that I feel he should work on. Might get bashed for it...but still

England have only themselves to blame and not the pitch. Yes india were brilliant, but they let off atleast 5 chances when india where batting not to mention playing just 1 spinner in a Spinner's heaven

Hey Mumbaikar, what are the first results of the litmus test? Showing any good signs?? :yk

We will know that at the end of day 3, Cook n KP are both capable of playing long & counter attacking innings respectively!

Anybody know why BCCI decided to stop media outlets from posting match pictures? It seems kinda harsh.

Ashwin on for another 10 , I think he is better at getting wickets than Saeed ajmal. A big innings defeat s on cards.

Same old story - England pick the wrong side, oppo bats first and piles up big runs, nasty end-of-play session to negotiate, scoreboard pressure, men round the bat, England wickets fall.

Using Jimmy as nightwatchman regardless of the situation seems silly to me. I wouldn't use a nightwatchman, ever. It's defensive thinking. Send a batsman in to do his job.

Thinking positively: England looked all at sea against the spinners in the first test of the Gower series in '84, but came back to win the series. Then on the Flintoff series they lost the first one and came back for a draw. So all is not lost.

They just have to pick the right team, and be more positive against the spinners. Hopefully Chef and the others can make some runs tomorrow and gain confidence, then they can come back in the second match armed with Finn and Monty.

They didn't. BCCI only stopped agencies such as Getty Images who sell their photos for profit. Agencies such as AFP, Reuters which use their photos for editorial purposes are still welcome. But they also didn't come because they wanted to show solidarity with other profit making businesses.

In such cases, it looks wrong thinking rather than just defensive thinking. When your main batsmen struggle against turn then nightwatchman should be sent to get slaughtered. Tough work should be done by main batsman only.

Who would you drop for Finn? I hope England don't get carried away with what happened in this match. Mumbai track is generally more bouncy and may assist seamers with new ball.
