Compton basically 9 off 58 he needs to get a move on and help Cookie monster out

Is Compton getting caps purely to 'take the pressure' off Cook? Very debatable selection if so.

I would be tempted to give Joe Root a whirl in the final Test. Compton has done nothing wrong but largely because he has done nothing.

He's doing a fine job. He can play his shots, but if he's going to drop an anchor on day 2 on a flat pitch, can't blame him.

Give Root the chance over Fatel. What use is Fatel in this team?

England playing a proper test match innings. Cannot see anything wrong with it?

They need to bat big and bat preferably only once.

England do not need to do the running, India must do that.

This is test match cricket guys, not that other rubbish. Great to see!

I miss Collingwood :(.

He would have caught all the catches we dropped, and probably one that wasn't even a chance until he made it so.

With Compton I think we are getting fooled because of Cook's godlike form. When Cook's form isn't so good, imagine us being 3 down early and Compton scratching away with Trott or Bell. It's an embarrassing prospect.

Root in for Compton, Fatel out for Bairstow. We need to be blooding young players - Compton is not young and Fatel is...fat.

If he manages to put a third consecutive 100 run opening partnership with Cook, I am willing to give him a bit more time.

I am fine with him sitting there all day if Cook is doing fine.

Might put extra pressure on Cook to keep things moving. He's the key for Eng imo so need to make his job a bit easier the way I see it.

Lets get this series done and then try all the youngsta beauties in Marshyland.

That beautiful record deserves more of a chance. Sure he's slow, but 280 runs more than the next bloke on the list with three fewer games?

He needs a try on different wickets.

England with a great start

dumbass Dhoni hasnt introduced our best bowler,Ojha yet:facepalm:

If any thing I think Compton makes things a bit harder for Cook?

These arguments for Compton do kind of hinge on Cook getting at least a 50 each innings - which will not happen. I know we love Ali but he is only human. Now and again he will get out for 20 or whisper it get a magic ball in the first over. (Sad face.)

Cook's long-term partner has to prove himself to be competent independently of him.

Root averages 38 in FC cricket. He still has some development to go.

That's a bit harsh. I'll carry him around till we play our next couple of home series. Can't believe what could've happened if we regularly lost an opener early in every inns. He didn't made enough runs but he played enough balls to frustrate the bowlers, need to rotate the strike a bit more though.

Okay then, I will accept him for now. But he doesn't look test class yet.

Ojha into the attack now. This could be telling.

50* out of 67-0, 9 fours and a six, supreme effort again

Fair point I guess that's the flip side of the equation. Cook is a calm rational batsman so maybe it's not as bad as it looks from the outside. Maybe they have a good understanding and this is the plan of attack. Who knows lol

Flat pitch? Still not sure, but it's certainly a lightning outfield.

300 has got to be an under-par score, it's just got to.

50 for Cook top knock. Needs to make it count.

One of the reasons I'm rallying for Compton so hard is because of Strauss. While I enjoyed him immensely as a cricketer, as an opener in the past few years he had one good century once every few series, and then exposed the #3 early in the rest. Got pretty sick of it.

Compton has more blocks than a lego set :yk
Six and back into his shell lol

520 would be a great score. 440 would be okay too.

Either way need a lead of least 100 to give Swann and Monty a chance to recreate the magic of Mumbai. :)

Hilarious over. Mistakes all around.

I find it odd that they showed the atrocious lbw appeal for Ashwin yet didn't show the one that Anderson had earlier today that looked out...

Need to calm down, bit of a rustiness shown by our batsmen in the last 10 mins.

So what has happened to Ashwin's mystery ball? Any one seen it? :msd

Well said Sir! Strauss was so poor this year and was putting enormous pressure on other batters. The opening looks a lot more assuring now. It's quite a shame though that Trott has not been able to cash in on these good starts

England marching on. Indian bowlers looking like they did in Australia

India always look like they've given up during a decent partnership.

Just 20 mins more for tea. Hang in there guys.

44444444....

Another 100 runs partnership between openers Cook and Compton.

I think Compton is exactly what we need at the top of the order. This is Test cricket, you don't get prizes for scoring at a high rate, you get prizes for making a big score in the first innings and winning matches. Compton is a steady batsman who doesn't expose the middle order too soon.

If we need fast innings' we have the likes of Cook, KP and Prior but we don't have any real Collingwood-esque players who dig in and can produce a real gritty innings.

How is that possible?

Fewer sweat glands. Probably a less serious version than a complete lack of sweat glands as that would mean no way for the body to get rid of excess heat. It's been said that he doesn't have many, but if he had none, you'd see cold towels constantly on the field to make sure he doesn't die of overheating.

Cook can play that innings, but I'd rather not need him to do so.

Is it true that alister cook does not sweat?

Apparently he hardly does.

Team England did some training sessions in a heat/humidity chamber to see who sweat the least (so they knew to keep the ball away from them when trying to keep it dry for reverse swing or something) and Cook turned out to hardly sweat at all.

Err no, to give the ball to that person.

Cook is their ball shiner because of that because he doesn't have sweaty palms.

I agree totally.

Occupation of the crease is going to be crucial in this game. I suspect this pitch will start to take spin and ideally we don't want India to start their 2nd innings before that happens. India's players lack physical fitness, and once they get tired (as has already started to happen) the runs will come.

Tea round the corner. Eng need to be aware of that , just shut down the shop and play for tea.

With 3 more cook moves on to 77 n o

India would be ruining the dropped catch of Cook.

Compton nearing his personal best of 37, how will he fare?
