What's new

India vs South Africa | 3rd Test | Johannesburg | Jan 24-28, 2018 | Day 3 | Discussion Thread [#490]

Elgar is all at sea here, expecting to get hit every ball. Crouching low and then suddenly trying to move his hands to weather the bounce. Batsmen have had it so easy for a decade or more, it's a nice change to see the shoe on the other foot for once. The reason why people are so appalled is because it's so rare to see batsmen being hit these days, but it's by no means life threatening. It's test cricket at its most visceral form.

Uneven bounce, which can hit you even when ball is not short, is going to make any batsman behave the same way.

Like I said:

"The players are leaving the field. Aleem Dar is having a chat with Kohli who seems animated and unhappy with the decision"

What an entitled brat

This is a disgraceful decision. Kohli would be fully justified in spewing a few expletives at the administrators. Hope the BCCI back him here.

No, Elgar was batting like an amateur. Even the Indian tailenders weren't batting this way. It's common sense to not plant your balance on the front foot and bat outside the crease when the ball is rearing up. He was bound to get his feet in a tangle and get hit.

The batsmen are being hit every second ball and this is a disgraceful decision? I'm sure you would have said the complete opposite if the roles were reversed.

SA chickening out. Shameless. Their country, their pitch and then they chicken out.

Very poor sight to be honest. Absolutely hate seeing match getting abandoned due to pathetic pitch.

Either they should have abandoned the play long time back or should have continued till the end. It shouldnt have taken ELgar's poor technique to force the hand.

He is a brat but these are far better batting conditions than what SA and Some PPers are making it out to be. The SA bowlers couldn't get the pitch to do anything here even when the pitch wasn't given a roll in the morning

TBH, Kohli has every reason to be riled here. He isn't the one who asked for a pitch to be created where Indians could be taught the lesson of their lives.

This is a farce South Africans overreacting this is how test match pitches behave, it was fine for India to bat on but these cowards wanna run off.

That was a short ball that Elgar couldn't get bat to, stupid to go off for that.

How can they say pitch in india bad, india bat on same pitch here and india too. Now both pitch are bad according to them.

Even with a pathetic Indian show, it looks like the Tosses decided the series, bitter pill to swallow for most but the truth is out there for all to see

Kholi is always a disgrace but SA should own their pitch and carry on. Have some integrity.

Am sure some PP Experts would have had no hesitation calling Virat coward had he backed out. Now when Saffers are batting, pitch suddenly became attorcious

Syed1 bro i know you do not want india to win but kohli is right here. He bats all day here taking blow everywhere

Gavaskar is absolutely correct, that ball was short and wasn't played with the best technique by Elgar.

In saying that, with the amount of time the physio has had to come out this is not a good cricket pitch. No one should ever be wishing for players to be harmed.

What an entitled brat

Watch the match. Short ball that would've done this on any pitch. Kohli's in the right here.

I would have liked SA batting here longer to be honest. Shami and Co. were batting just few overs back. Leaves a bad taste for entire series when it ends like this.

Wondering if the match is called off due to bad pitch would Kohli and Indian management cry that they have been robbed of a victory?

Srini would be recalled if this happens :srini:

I would have said exactly the same if India were batting here, not that that matters given that I have no preference for who wins here.

An Indian victory is not a foregone conclusion.

That did not lift from good length, it was pitched 8 meters away from the crease.

I wasn't talking about last few overs. I was commenting in general for entire match. Even if you see others getting hit , it creates doubt in your head. Anyway, SA didn't want to lose this match. I am sure if role were reversed they may have batted longer. Pitch is not suitable for the test cricket though.

Gavaskar thrashing the hell out of the Proteas on Tv and the "Actor Elgar"
The fact is SA have escaped the most difficult 8-10 overs because of this
Even if they are back India have been robbed off . Gavaskar is completely getting crazy

Gavasker being extremely disgraceful, class less in the com box. Its embarrassing. He said If Indians would have complained they would have been called sissies

Gavaskar saying that if the boot was on the other foot, and India was chasing this target and the match was going to be abandoned then they would have been called sissies for doing so.

Abonden match here will make South africa earlier victory in bad taste. They loose first time toss and it is going to end in bad way.

Its not India's fault that Elgar can't evade a turdler's bouncer despite playing in SA his whole life. He should retire hurt if he is scared to play. Indian tailender batted here when they were targeted with short stuff.

I guess he was under pressure after subcontinental centurion track was criticised by SA team and media.

I didn't agree with criticism. I think criticism should come if batsmen are getting hurt. Lots of sideways movement in green mamba or rank turner from the day 1 is fine for me.

For once Gavaskar says something correct, if India did this we will have people calling us sissies, chokers do it then it is a bad pitch.

Seconded.

I think Gavaskar, for once, is right

I agree.

If they wanted to call this match off, they should have done it during India's innings. Not fair.

Unless the pitch has changed states drastically to the point where it's "much" more dangerous now vs. then.

Gavaskar is right. Bishan Singh bedi is still criticised for declaring the innings to protect his tailenders against the fearsome WI bowlers.

All day indians taking blow on their bodies. Now Sa batsman went outside in 3 4 blows. How can you play all your life in fast pitches and can't take it.

Chalo jee sonay pe sohaga... barish bhi hogayi lol

Someone really doesn't want India to win :ashwin

Still 2 days to go, I think we will have a full game.

de Kock? Seriously? Have you watched a single day this series?

Ok man congratulations on a victory and a series whitewash. This goes in the cabinet with India's series victories in Aus, Eng and NZ.

It all depends on the match officials. He is indirectly calling Saffers sissies who have done nothing wrong here.

He isn't. He's just saying what would happen if it was the other way around.

However, Faf's opinion does play a hand in if it gets abandoned or not.

Gavasker being extremely disgraceful, class less in the com box. Its embarrassing. He said If Indians would have complained they would have been called sissies

Brilliant statement actually. Gavaskar has always been blunt with his views.

India played 2 innings on the pitch. Darpok South Africans are now crying!

I was... but that didn't mean they had won. Still 9 wickets to be taken with ABDV, Alma and De Cock still available.

even if and when match starts, who is going to account for the dangerous 15 overs of batting SA escaped with this Elgar act??

So the pitch where Shami smashed SA bowlers suddenly turned dangerous in an hour?

A match should be cancelled on the first day at best,Not after 3 days.

SA should forfeit if they are too scared to play

Disgraceful stuff by SA. Didn't expect this from them but now I know why they don't win knockout matches. No integrity. No heart. Faf wanted revenge so he should see it through.

its not about right and wrong but sometimes u dont have to say something which is obvious and does not suit ur stature.

What else are you left with? If you cant even call a spade a spade? This is clearly double standard on display.

South African sissies caused the rain as well :sree :sree :sree

Don't be so bitter, answer me, even before rain there was enough time for 8-9 overs for SA to face which they have escaped where every ball looked like a potential wicket. WHO IS GOING TO ACCOUNT FOR THAT, India Batted on almost a similar pitch in the 4th innings of 2nd test

Unless the pitch has changed states drastically to the point where it's "much" more dangerous now vs. then.

But according to some PP Experts pitch has become life threatening all of a sudden

2 days to go, only way there isn't a result is if match got called off.

It will only be called off for the day and they will put rollers etc tomorrow and reassess... you guys are crying as if all 9 Saffer wickets would have fallen today.

This should have been called off before India had to guts it out all day.

Player safety is paramount and there's no way this test should go ahead. It should have been called off yesterday.

So you mean to say the Saffers were misplaying the balls on purpose and taking body blows in the hopes that the match will be called off?
