Jurgen Klopp says Liverpool cannot just solve their issues by splashing out in the transfer market

Jurgen Klopp on potential summer spending: "With the structure we have here we do not just solve our problems in the transfer market"; watch Man Utd vs Liverpool live on Sky Sports Premier League and Main Event from 8pm - kick-off 8.15pm

Jurgen Klopp says Liverpool do not need to spend big in the summer transfer market to address the problems they have faced in the Premier League this season.

Klopp's side face a challenge if they are even to finish inside the top four this season going into Thursday's re-arranged game against Manchester United at Old Trafford, live on Sky Sports Premier League.

Although Liverpool have two games in hand on fourth-placed Chelsea, last season's Premier League winners are seven points adrift of the Blues and at real risk of missing out on the Champions League.

Klopp bemoaned Liverpool's long list of injuries this season as a factor behind their underperformance, but insisted the club cannot and will not act aggressively in the transfer market this summer in order to regain their position at the top of the Premier League.

Speaking ahead of Thursday's game, he told Sky Sports: "The situation doesn't really change, the world of football, the world itself, is in a very difficult place. With the structure we have here we do not just solve our problems in the transfer market.

"We do not say 'let's swap five or 10 players', it is not that it is just not needed but we could not do it (either).

"If we did not have the injury problems we did this year the season could have looked different, could we have been champions? I don't know, but it would have looked different.

Sven-Goran Eriksson says champions Manchester City still have some way to go to match the stature of Manchester United and Liverpool, but could one day reach that level should their success continue.
"Qualifying for the Champions League is incredibly difficult but we would have had a better chance than we do now, without the problems we had.

"Next year we do not look for excuses but winning the league in a league where teams have the financial resources and the football knowledge like Manchester City and Chelsea is just tricky. United will try to strengthen as well.

"Qualifying for the Champions League is already a big job in this country."

'No one will be forced to stay'
Klopp is also confident that none of his star players will be looking for a transfer away from the club despite the prospect of missing out on Champions League football.

Wijnaldum, who is out of contract in June, could be one of the players to leave Anfield this summer
But the German does admit that if one of his players were to request to leave, he would not consider forcing them to stay.

"I don't expect difficult conversations. At the moment no player has come to me and said anything about that. We will finish the season in the best possible way and have a break.

"Some of us have Euros and Copa America this summer. We pray they will come back healthy and then have a proper pre-season. We'll then see who will be with us or not.

"No one will be forced to stay. My understanding is that the boys want to stay. We want to prove we are better than this year."

Liverpool are all of a sudden back in contention for a top four finish. Crazy!!

Fancy them to finish in the top 4 now, especially with their run-in which looks easier then their rivals.

In Liverpool's entire club history since being founded in 1892, Alisson is the first goalkeeper ever to score a competitive goal for the club.

Such amazing things are only done by Liverpool. A rubbish season but could still finish in the top four thanks to a brilliant header by the keeper!!:yk2

Wijnaldum has been a target for Barcelona ever since they appointed Koeman as their head coach last year. The pair worked together with the Netherlands national team and wanted to reunite at club level. A deal didn’t materialise last year but with the midfielder approaching the end of his contract, he remains on Barca’s agenda.

The La Liga giants do not have the funds to pursue major deals, so signing someone like Wijnaldum on a free transfer would be a smart move. The connection with Koeman makes it an even more appealing option.

At one point, it seemed like the move was a foregone conclusion. But now, according to Football Insider, it is on the brink of collapse.

Koeman is under serious scrutiny after just one year in the Camp Nou hotseat. Barcelona will finish no higher than third in La Liga this season, their lowest placing since 2007-08.

Therefore, there is a genuine chance that Koeman will be sacked. And if that happens, Barcelona will end their pursuit of Wijnaldum.

It would be a major setback for the 30-year-old, who had outlined Barca as his dream destination. Instead, he will have to consider other options.

The report adds that talks over a new contract with Liverpool are still at a stalemate despite his prominent role in the team. It seems more and more likely that he will be leaving in the summer.

Inter Milan and Bayern Munich have been suggested as other exit routes for Wijnaldum to take. It seems his agent is behind the rumours surrounding the latter.

Most recently, Roma emerged as contenders for his signature under the instruction of Jose Mourinho.

Contract talks planned for another Liverpool star
While his next destination remains unclear, it seems extremely likely that Wijnaldum won’t be playing for Liverpool again next season.

They will thus be keen to avoid a similar scenario with more of their players in future. Many of their key men have contracts expiring in 2023, which they will look to resolve.

There is no immediate rush to extend those contracts, but the Wijnaldum situation shows they need to plan ahead.

With that in mind, they have reportedly identified two players to offer extensions to first – including one of Wijnaldum’s midfield teammates.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp says Manchester City would not have won the Premier League this season if they had to deal with his side's injury crisis.

Influential centre-backs Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez missed most of the season with knee injuries.

Fellow defender Joel Matip, midfielders Fabinho and Jordan Henderson and new signing Diogo Jota were among those to also miss large parts of the campaign.

"With our injuries it was not the year to become champions," Klopp said.

"No chance - for nobody.

"As good as they are, if City have their three centre-halves out, no [they don't win the league]. Three centre-halves of [Manchester] United, no.

"We have fought back a bit, accepted the difficulties and made the best of it, and if we win on Sunday, and if we qualify for the Champions League, then we made the best of it. That is it."

Despite being top of the table at Christmas, the impact of the injuries eventually caught up with Klopp's side.

But they have bounced back, with seven victories in nine matches meaning that if they win their final match at home to Crystal Palace on Sunday they should qualify for the Champions League.

During their title-winning campaign last season Klopp frequently hailed his players as "mentality monsters".

"It is clear we wouldn't come to this situation if the boys wouldn't have showed this kind of character. They have very special character," he added.

"The boys proved it now millions of times, it's not about their mentality or character if something has gone wrong.

"Going through tough periods makes you stronger as a unit and in that time we didn't get distracted. Nothing came between us.

"Yes we had our moments, players were not in the best shape or the best mood. I was not in the best mood, but we always found a way to stick together.

"We never blamed each other or pointed a finger at each other and said, 'It is because of you or you'.

So whatever happens on Sunday, we found our way out to bring us to this situation."

Georginio Wijnaldum says he will "miss" his Liverpool team-mates and fans after playing what is set to be his final game for the club.

Finished a good third that is not bad considering all the injuries suffered. Those who thought we would not qualify for the Champions League next season must be licking their wounds. We finished a respectable third only a few points behind the second placed Devil's. We look forward to the new season with some shrewd signings, departures and hope in our heart:D Wijnaldum, Shaqiri, Origi and Keita are most likely off where as Minamino may not return to Anfield either. Griezmann seems to be one possible incoming signing. Next season the swagger will return as will VVD among others.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp said salvaging Champions League qualification from a chaotic season was the "best feeling I could have dreamed of" after victory over Crystal Palace clinched third place.

The Reds' Premier League title disintegrated after Christmas and they fell timidly to Real Madrid in the Champions League but rallied to win their final five Premier League games to claim a prize that looked unlikely until the penultimate weekend of the season.

Liverpool were initially nervous but got the result they needed against Palace - who had Roy Hodgson taking charge for the final time - thanks to two goals from Sadio Mane in front of almost 10,000 home fans at Anfield.

"Outstanding. We wanted this feeling, this game, this atmosphere. Finishing the season in third is incredible," Klopp told BBC Radio 5 Live.

"Credit to the boys - I can't believe how it worked out in the last few weeks, incredible."

Relive all the action as it happened on the final day of the Premier League season
Final farewells and top four decided
A top-four spot looked beyond Liverpool when they sat eighth in early March after a campaign undermined by injuries and a catastrophic run of home form including six successive Anfield league defeats.

Even at the end of April they remained four points off fourth place with just five games to go but won each of those to not only seal a place at Europe's top table again but also leapfrog Chelsea into third.

"It's big. If someone told me five, six, eight weeks ago we can finish the season in third - it was out of reach, barely possible," added Klopp.

"Fighting through this and finishing here in third is the best lesson you could learn in life. From nowhere to the Champions League in five weeks is a massive achievement."

Mane poked home from a corner nine minutes before half-time to ease Liverpool's early anxieties and the Senegal forward wrapped up victory with a deflected shot in the 74th minute.

Andros Townsend gave Liverpool an early scare when he raced clear only to shoot off target but the home side took control from there and eased to victory with few further alarms.

'It feels really, really great' - Klopp delight at Champions League place
No trophies - but Klopp will be delighted
Liverpool were contemplating a season in the Europa League or Conference - or indeed no European football at all - when Joe Willock's 95th-minute equaliser gave Newcastle United a point on 24 April.

Liverpool's players and Klopp looked shell-shocked after that match - five days after another dispiriting draw at Leeds United - as they sat in sixth place and looking anything like a side likely to string a series of wins together.

However, with Fabinho back in midfield after his spell in defence, they found their form and the run of victories mean they will be back in Europe's elite tournament next term despite the struggles of this campaign.

There was nothing more dramatic than that remarkable last-gasp header by Alisson at West Bromwich Albion, when the keeper raced forward in desperation with Liverpool being held 1-1 and their Champions League hopes slipping away.

To finish in the top four is a success, of sorts, given it was delivered in the face of disruption and an astonishing collapse in form - especially at Anfield.

Virgil van Dijk was ruled out for the season by a knee injury in September, soon to be followed by fellow defenders Joe Gomez and Joel Matip while new signing Thiago Alcantara's Liverpool career got off to a false start, also because of injury.

The likes of captain Jordan Henderson and £45m summer signing Diogo Jota were also ruled out for lengthy periods.

Throw in the worst run of home results in Liverpool history and it seems remarkable that a season containing so much poor form can conclude on the relative high of third place ahead of the likes of Chelsea and Leicester City, who had been ahead of them for so long.

Liverpool have not come close to silverware but the scenes when Mane scored his second and at the final whistle - muted celebrations at best - hinted at a mixture of delight and relief that Klopp and his players had made the best of a bad job this season.

There was also a fond farewell to Netherlands midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum, whose contract expires this summer, with a post-match guard of honour.

"It is very emotional for me because I lose a friend and I will miss him but it is normal in football these things happen," added Klopp.

"Each club who is interested in him should call me because I couldn't be more positive about what he did. Now it looks like the time is over but nobody can take our memories from us."

Roy Hodgson's Premier League managerial career is likely to have ended at Anfield, where he endured a short and unsuccessful spell in charge after succeeding Rafael Benitez in summer 2010.

He did not win over Liverpool fans back then, but heard the sound of warm applause from them on Sunday when he made a pre-match appearance at the side of the pitch.

Palace started as if they were in the mood to give Hodgson a victorious send-off and scupper Liverpool's Champions League plans, but once Townsend missed a good early chance and Mane had put Klopp's side in front, the traffic largely flowed in only one direction.

Roy Hodgson, 73, has managed 16 clubs and four senior national teams in eight countries across 45 years
Hodgson has done a predictably steady job but now the Palace hierarchy must decide on their next move, with the hunt on for a new manager and numerous players coming to the end of their contracts.

There will, no doubt, be the usual summer speculation surrounding forward Wilfried Zaha but, no matter whether he stays or goes, it will be a time of change at Selhurst Park.

"It's been a wonderful time. It's quite incredible what the players have done," Hodgson told BBC Sport.

"I'm very proud of the performance. We played a top, top team. As a last game of the season, with nothing to play for, we gave them a really good game."

He added: "I know I have to come to terms with the fact my last game has been played and I am pleased that last game has been played at Anfield, this is one of the temples of football.

"You're in the Premier League to get visits to Old Trafford and Anfield and when I look back on it with a bit more distance I think I will be pleased it was here for the last time, albeit against a team who were much better than us on the day."

Palace's Liverpool woes - the stats

Liverpool finished the season third, and have now been in the top four in all five of their full seasons under Jurgen Klopp. It's the club's longest run of finishing as high as fourth in England's top-flight since doing so in 10 straight campaigns from 1981-82 to 1990-91.
Crystal Palace have lost each of their last eight league meetings with Liverpool, conceding 24 goals in the process (three-per-game on average).
Liverpool won their two Premier League meetings with Crystal Palace this season by a combined 9-0 score; only against Ipswich in 2001-02 (11-0) have they enjoyed a bigger aggregate margin across two Premier League meetings with an opponent in a season.
Liverpool's Mane has scored in eight consecutive Premier League games against Crystal Palace, becoming just the second player to score in eight consecutive Premier League appearances against a single opponent, after Robin van Persie against Stoke.
Mane has scored 10 or more goals in all seven of his Premier League seasons (two with Southampton, five with Liverpool), the most number of campaigns by any player while scoring 10 or more in all of them.

Allowing wijnaldum to go is a mistake for me

Their better getting rid of dead wood like Keita , Shaqiri, oxlade, Woodburn, origi , and some of these players like that Serbian midfielder grujic, Harry Wilson, Milner, ojo, minamino , karius , Adrian, which will lower the wage bill and get players off the book

Even matip and Ben Davies should be moved on since we have gomez , virgil, nat Phillips, rhys Williams , fabinho, kabak who can fill central defence roles .

Wijnaldum is a key player imo and a good player don't understand why the management don't value such a player.

Getting rid of dead wood and bringing in some of the youngsters like Harvey elliot , Curtis Jones and playing them more , using the money from the dead wood for some shrewd signings.

There's a lot of dead wood players that need to be moved on and wage bill reduced

Well konate would be a good addition but whether liverpool need him if the 3 centre backs come back and are fit is up for debate.

I think a left back should be bought in hindsight liverpool should have bought jamal Lewis instead of tsimikas . But a decent cover or competition is needed for Robertson.

Bissouma would be a good signing , alonsigside giving more games to Curtis Jones.

And for attacking I think liverpool can be shrewd and snap up neto from wolves and at same time recall harvey elliot and play him as well and blood in the left winger kaidon Gordon signed from Derby County.

Liverpool don't even need to.break the bank balance , they could also get rid of a lot of players as well.

Liverpool have triggered the £36m release clause of RB Leipzig defender Ibrahima Konate and hope to finalise deal in next few days

Liverpool have agreed to sign French central defender Ibrahima Konate from RB Leipzig on a long-term deal.

The Reds have not disclosed the fee for 22-year-old, who reportedly had a buyout clause of about £35m in his contract with the German club.

He has passed his medical and agreed personal terms, but his move remans subject to international clearance and a UK work permit.

"It's a really exciting moment for me and my family," Konate said.

A bit injury prone but hopefully he develops to his potential an exciting prospect

Vvd gomez back

Rhys Williams loaned out

Then either keep one of matip or phillips and cash on one , probably a good move to cash out on phillips since his stock has risen.

Either keep Ben Davies in the squad or sell him on since kabak liverpool don't want .

Vvd was a big miss last season

You dont live in England, so wouldnt know how much LFC fans are happy with the teams finishing position in a tough season. Hilliarous Arsenal fans can laugh at any other team when they arent even in Europe. Of course we are still the greatest club, this season hasnt changed anything.

Great signing Konate , he and Virgil will be a strong force next season. LFC will be the only team to challenge City again.

I know Liverpool fans are happy, but they are happy because they have been brought back to earth.

They thought they were going to defend the title and did not expect to have a tough season.

They got a dose of reality this season and were humbled after claiming that the 2019-20 Liverpool team was the greatest PL side ever. It was a brilliant campaign but they are far from the greatest team.

They proved to be mediocre champions and their title defense fizzled out within 3-4 months.

No one said anything about the greatest club. Liverpool is the greatest English club but the 2019-20 Liverpool team was not the greatest English side as a lot of Liverpool fans claimed.

The 2019 team didnt play most of the season but will be back in the few months. We have now signed another potential great defender, along with VVD, we will have a solid back line. City is the best side, nobody can deny this but they also had a shocker when we won the title by 2nd biggest points margin ever. This didnt mean City were back down to Earth, they had an abnormal seaon while we were sensational. Next season both teams will be at their best, will be a great title race as it was a few years ago. As an Arsenal fan, watch LFC and City, you'll have more joy than watching the once Gooners who are now Peashooters :afridi

Konate is a good defendar and will boost LP however he is probably the most injury prone player ever, he if does remain fit with VVD i think LP can start challenging for top 4 again without relying on chelsea and other to lose.

We didnt expect top 4 a couple of months ago, so very happy to qualify. We know this was a one off season & we will back competing for the title next season. I think we will win it again.

What a daft thing to say. Every team depends on it's rivals to lose in order to win any competition. The only thing that matters is we finished third, that's all. Now again we have Konate in early and could follow it with Turk midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu. There will obviously be departures as well.

Sources have told ESPN that should right-backs Reece James and Kyle Walker both indicate they have come through the Champions League final in Portugal unscathed as expected -- neither suffered obvious fitness problems to the naked eye -- Alexander-Arnold will be left out of Southgate's final squad.
A third right-back, Kieran Trippier, is also expected to be selected. The news will come as a bitter blow to Alexander-Arnold, who had been a doubt for the squad ever since being dropped for the March triple-header against San Marino, Albania and Poland.

Liverpool intend to open contract talks with goalkeeper Alisson Becker when he returns to the club after the summer.

The Brazil international is currently away preparing for the Copa America and is one of several players the club want to start negotiations with.

Alisson, 28, joined the Reds from Roma on a six-year-deal in 2018 for £66.8m.

That made him the world's most expensive keeper at the time, and he has gone on to win the Champions League and Premier League.

Alisson scored a crucial late winner against West Brom in May and won the club's goal of the season award, becoming the sixth keeper to score a Premier League goal - and the first to do so with a header.

Liverpool had a difficult season after they were unable to retain their Premier League title but secured qualification for the Champions League with a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace on the final day of the campaign.

Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum is close to joining Paris St-Germain on a free transfer.

Wijnaldum opted not to sign an extension to his contract with Liverpool at the end of the season.

It was anticipated the 30-year-old was going to join Barcelona when his Reds deal expires at the end of June.

However, PSG, who finished second in Ligue 1 last season, are understood to have stepped in with a better offer and Wijnaldum has opted to join them.

The presence of Mauricio Pochettino at PSG is also thought to have been a factor.

Wijnaldum spoke highly of Pochettino before he joined Liverpool and although the deal is not completed, it is now anticipated the Dutchman will move to the French capital.

Wijnaldum, who is part of the Netherlands squad for Euro 2020, made 237 appearances for Liverpool, where he won the Premier League and Champions League.

Liverpool FC get green light for Anfield expansion to 61,000

The plan to extend the Anfield Road End by 7,000 additional seats, taking Anfield’s new capacity to circa 61,000, will go before the planning committee next week (15 June) and the council’s head of planning has recommended that the application be granted.

The new application, which is a revision of the previously expired permission, was submitted earlier this year and there has been a delay in the council committee meeting due to the pandemic.

The revised application includes permission to use the stadium for other team sporting events and to host up to six major events per annum, for up to five years. This is less than the 12 events initially requested.

Events would be allowed throughout the year, excluding the month of July, but expected that they would mostly take place in the six weeks immediately following the end of the football season.

This Is Anfield understands that the new plan for the corner of the Anfield Road End and The Kenny Dalglish Stand will see an entry section big enough to bring in large items for stages to convert the stadium for concerts and such.

Preparatory work has already begun and once approved Liverpool will be looking to press on with the construction process, which will see the new stand initially being built directly behind the current Anfield Road Stand.

Anfield Road itself will be re-routed around the back of the new stand, and that will be transferred from public land to the club. New pedestrian and cycle routes will be created on the edge of Stanley Park.

The expanded stand will be similar in appearance to the Main Stand and will have an increased capacity of 7,000 seats (bringing the total capacity of the stadium to c.61,000).

The new application, once approved next week, will expire in three years, but Liverpool expect for the project to be complete in summer 2023.

Liverpool plans to fund the build themselves through existing finance options, and cost is set to be around £60 million.

The plan is to keep the current stand open for the entirety of the project to avoid any loss of matchday revenue.

Chief operating officer Andy Hughes previously explained: “It was very complicated for the Main Stand, we built around the back and over the top and kept match days running pretty much as they were and we are pretty confident we can follow the same process for the Anfield Road expansion.

“We are looking at minimal seat loss on matchdays, hopefully virtually nothing.”

Wij gone, Konate in. Now awaiting more arrivals and departures.

Liverpool have been given the green light to increase Anfield's capacity to 61,000.
The club's plans for a £60m expansion of their stadium were approved by Liverpool City Council on Tuesday morning and will see the Anfield Road stand grow by 7,000.

As well as the increased capacity, Liverpool's proposal includes the development of a new family fan zone, hospitality lounges, and a range of other facilities.
