What's new

Liverpool FC | 2022/23 Season

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp felt as though his side "could've turned the match around" but lacked "conviction" in their 2-1 defeat at Manchester United.

For any team, losing for the first time in a calendar year, in August, would be little more than a blip but for Liverpool there's a feeling that it is more concerning than that.

The Reds' 2-1 loss at Manchester United on Monday saw their opponents leapfrog them in the table and leave Jurgen Klopp's side without a victory so far this season.

It is unfamiliar territory for Klopp. Liverpool have never failed to win at least one of their opening three games during his tenure, and a total of just two points from nine available leaves them five points behind defending champions Manchester City and seven adrift of leaders Arsenal.

"At this stage it feels big," said former Reds defender Jamie Carragher on Sky Sports.

"I don't think they can be thinking about City, Liverpool need to get themselves back on track. They have had a really poor start. They set such high standards but they are a million miles off them right now.

"They have to fix it quickly."

Liverpool had 17 shots on goal with five on target - one more than Manchester United - and Klopp felt his side had done enough to take all three points.

"We should have won this game, I know it sounds ridiculous but that is how I saw it," he said.

"I am concerned about our situation, but that is how it is."

Regardless of whether Klopp believes his side did enough to win, that task is always going to be made harder by the poor starts Liverpool have been making to games.

They finished just one point behind City at the end of last season after a strong finish to the campaign saw them push Pep Guardiola's side for the title.

But even then, they were having to come from behind in their final few games and that has continued into this season.

Jadon Sancho's 16th-minute goal meant Liverpool have now conceded first in seven successive league games, the first time it has happened to them in the Premier League era.

"We give every team a goal start," said Liverpool full-back Andy Robertson. "We can't give ourselves an uphill battle. That is what needs to change.

"In the warm up it was the quietest I have heard this stadium and they wanted something to lift them and we gave them it.

"Two points from nine is not the start we wanted. We need to pick up our performances individually and collectively."

The more games that are played, the more Sadio Mane - who joined Bayern Munich in the summer - appears to be a big miss for Liverpool.

The Reds have had a lot of injuries to contend with and they were without the suspended striker Darwin Nunez for Monday's game, but the absence of Mane's energy and movement in their attack was glaring against Manchester United.

"Losing Mane was a big deal and he is tough to replace," said former Chelsea striker Chris Sutton on BBC Radio 5 live.

For Carragher, it is midfield that provides the biggest concern.

Jordan Henderson, James Milner and Harvey Elliott all started but it was not until Fabinho - on the bench because he's not fully fit - was brought on 14 minutes into the second half that Liverpool really started to take control.

"Liverpool have a huge problem in midfield," said Carragher. "It is the area supporters question continuously and those questions won't go away with performances like this.

"When people talk about injuries, the first 11 isn't a million miles away but look at the bench - they don't have players who can change the game."

Liverpool's next opportunity to get their season up and running is at home to Bournemouth on Saturday.

"To play the football we are able to play, we want to fight," said Klopp. "We have a good home game on Saturday and Anfield has to be rocking. We have to set the fire and the rhythm.

"We will try absolutely everything that every Liverpool supporter will expect - we will fight for our lives."

2 points from 3 games.

Not the start Liverpool had wanted or expected.

Lots of injuries but they just haven't clicked at all.

Injuries ruined Leeds Unted's season last season as well. Had to play many u23s.

Currently Liverpool 9, Bournemouth 0...

Liverpool kick-started their campaign in ruthless fashion by thrashing newly promoted Bournemouth at Anfield to equal the biggest victory (9-0) in Premier League history.

Manager Jurgen Klopp had described the beginning to his side's campaign a "false start" after two draws and Monday night's defeat at Manchester United, but the Reds responded in stunning fashion.

Manchester United have achieved that margin of victory twice, against Ipswich in 1995 and Southampton last year, and Leicester City did likewise against the Saints in 2019.

Liverpool got off to the perfect start with two goals in the opening five minutes against the Cherries to set a raucous Anfield rocking.

Luis Diaz rose to head home and Harvey Elliott curled in his first top-flight goal with a sublime strike from outside the box.

Full-back Trent Alexander-Arnold thumped a long-range shot into the top corner, with all three goals assisted by Roberto Firmino.

The Brazil forward went from provider to scorer on the half-hour mark when he acrobatically converted from inside the six-yard box and Virgil van Dijk headed in the fifth from a corner - all before half-time.

It went from bad to worse for Scott Parker's men in the first minute of the second half when Chris Mepham stretched to divert the ball into his own net and Firmino poked home the seventh of the afternoon.

Liverpool had some harsh words thrown their way after the defeat at Manchester United on Monday.

Former vice-captain Jamie Carragher called it "embarrassing" as they started the Premier League season in sluggish manner with two draws and the loss at Old Trafford.

It came just a couple of months on from last season's exploits, when they came agonisingly close to football immortality, winning the Carabao Cup and FA Cup but then finishing runners-up in the Premier League by a point and losing the Champions League final against Real Madrid.

Manager Jurgen Klopp has set high standards during his time at Anfield and his side failed to meet them so far this term, but Bournemouth's arrival on Merseyside gave the Reds a chance to remind their rivals of their credentials.

Liverpool's performance was an impressive display of relentless, attacking football that led to the home side winning 9-0, equalling the biggest victory in Premier League history - with fans left chanting for 10.

Liverpool equal record in thrashing of Bournemouth
Asked by BBC Sport how the result ranked personally, Klopp pointed to the performance of his team.

"9-0 is a strange result, it will not happen often and it will probably never happen again," said the German.

"It just feels a very important result, it is not that we worked less in the last eight weeks, we were all in a really good mood, liked what we saw most of the time but you don't get it on the ground.

As expected we saw a furious Liverpool hammering Bournemouth like their daddy. Hardly any missed chances with all the top players performing on the day. No doubt Jurgen must have had a few harsh things to say after a poor start to the season giving the boy's the hard kick they needed. I am confident this will kick start our season now albeit a bit later then I had expected.

Still hoping that we sign a few midfielders before the transfer window closes. I would be delighted if we as rumoured got Ruben Neves within the next few days then followed it up by signing Jude Bellingham next year.

Verbal agreement mean nothing. If another club offers more money the verbal agreement will move to them.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp was asked if he is still looking to bolster his midfield options...

"Ish. Somehow, yeah. But the closer we get to the last minute, the more unlikely it gets. That's just how it is. We're not out. I couldn't tell you names if I wanted to, but it's difficult because there are few players out there who could be the right ones.

"They're contracted to clubs who don't want to sell. We cannot force it.

"There is still time, but when it is over, signed or not signed, I'll be really happy as we can stopping thinking about it and just focus on the team and squad we have.

"We have a good football team, and we must be ready to face all the problems we'll have in the season.

"I'm not careful - I get told what's possible and what's not possible - and that's it.

"We didn't sign anyone in the summer before we became champions. It's not the most famous approach to take after finishing second the season before but you have to remember you have an existing team.

"All the players we have here, we want them here and we want to work with them.

"From time to time, I'd be ready to risk a bit more, but I'm fine with it. I don't think one second back."

We keep signing injured midfielders who spend more time in the takeaway then on the field of play. I am absolutely sick and tired with Keita, Thiago and particularity Ox Chamberlain who are all a complete waste of time and money. This is why we are always struggling to make numbers in the middle of the park. For heaven sake check the players injury record before signing him.

Jurgen Klopp calls Liverpool's late winner 'perfect response' to Newcastle time-wasting at Anfield

Jurgen Klopp hailed Liverpool's last-minute victory the "perfect response" when asked about Newcastle's time-wasting at Anfield, calling the 2-1 win one of his "best nights".

The visitors, who looked set to secure a deserved point thanks to Alexander Isak's first-half goal, had frustrated Klopp's side with a number of incidents of running down the clock in the final 10 minutes of the game, and during the five minutes of added time indicated Nick Pope also called on the physio for treatment on his shoulder.

However, the addition of more than two extra minutes before Fabio Carvalho's last-gasp winner from a corner was enough to leave the visiting bench incensed, and tensions boiled over as Liverpool's backroom staff and substitutes celebrated the youngster's goal.

"When we scored after 90-plus-eight minutes, it's the perfect response to that, to be honest. I'm really happy about that, but nothing else to say," he told BT Sport.

"It was the perfect moment to win this game because it was a difficult game, very passionate, aggressive defending. It's difficult to pick up the rhythm from a game where everything clicked immediately and you find yourself in situations where it isn't clicking immediately.

"I told the boys at half-time even before we were 1-0 down, we looked a bit desperate already, we didn't play the extra pass. When we did that, we were really dangerous, so we had to force ourselves to keep calm a little bit more and to keep going."

Klopp then showed off his trademark fist-pump celebration in front of the exuberant Kop come the final whistle, before heaping high praise on Liverpool's night.

"It's a massive boost from a frustrating night," he said. "One of the best nights we ever had, that's how football is.

"But we have to make sure we use these two days really well. The last two games we got six points, but we have to improve.

"It will not be that Everton open up for us now. We know it will be tough so we have to be ready."

Carvalho, who turned 20 on Tuesday, scored his second goal in five days to earn Liverpool only a second win from their opening five games, despite playing only 84 minutes to date for the club he joined from Fulham this summer.

"He's a fantastic boy," added Klopp. "We changed pretty much everything, we went very offensive orientated but he can also play there. If a boy is as good as he is then he needs the moment.

"It's a massive result, which we will remember it for years and years. We had a 3-2 win at Newcastle once where Divock Origi scored late. I'm not 100 per cent sure they all believed until the end - but from now on we have to as we showed again it is possible."

Yeah it was ridiculous how much time the Magpies were wasting. Poetic justice that we score a very late winner against them not for the first time I may add. This does not conceal how much we need some creativity in the middle before tomorrow's transfer window deadline. We huffed and puffed all evening without creating any serious problems for the Newcastle that is a major concern now. As early as the season as it is we just can't afford to many draws any more in the season if we're gonna be in the title run in come the end off the season. Hendo, Ox, Keita, Milner and Thiago are either too old or injury prone to have any serious impact even this season. Elliott is the one who carried us against Newcastle with an excellent performance.

Arthur Melo is flying to Liverpool as the club close in on a loan move for the Juventus midfielder.

The Football Association is reviewing an incident where a Newcastle staff member appeared to throw an object towards the Liverpool technical area during the Reds' 2-1 win on Wednesday.

Players and staff from both teams clashed after Fabio Carvalho's 98th-minute winner at Anfield.

It is unclear if the incident, captured on television, sparked the melee in front of the dugouts.

Newcastle declined to comment when contacted by BBC Sport.

The FA will also consider other factors in the build up to the confrontation.

Boss Eddie Howe called the late winner a "sickener" after his side had led 1-0 through a debut goal from £60m record signing Alexander Isak.

Roberto Firmino equalised for Liverpool before Carvalho hooked in from close range to win the game with almost the last kick.

Referee Andre Marriner had added on five additional minutes, but several Newcastle players went down with cramp, while goalkeeper Nick Pope also suffered an injury during the extra time.

When asked about Newcastle's apparent time-wasting, Klopp said of Carvalho's goal on BT Sport: "It's the perfect response to that. I am really happy about that."

The German added: "I don't know when the kicking the ball away stopped being a yellow card. When did this rule die?"

So we have signed Melo on loan with no obligation to buy. Being a Brazil international he can't be that bad. Firmino, Fabinho and Allison will all be delighted to have another Brazilian at Anfield. Perhaps JK can kick start his career again.

Arthur set for Liverpool debut at Napoli

Liverpool will be without injured captain Jordan Henderson for their opening Champions League Group A trip to Napoli on Wednesday.

Fabio Carvalho, Curtis Jones, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are also unavailable for the Reds.

However, fellow midfielder Thiago Alcantara is set to make his first appearance for a month.

Winger Hirving Lozano and forward Victor Osimhen could be available for Napoli after returning to training.

Injuries have left Liverpool particularly light in midfield, which led to their deadline-day loan move for Arthur Melo from Juventus.

The 26-year-old has not played a competitive match since his substitute appearance in May's Coppa Italia final and could make his Reds debut in Naples at the imposing Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.

"Arthur just needs football now, training especially, that's how it is," said Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, who has seen his side lose on each of his three previous visits to the Italian club.

"Can he play minutes? Yes. Should he play a full game? No, because he needs to get used to the intensity in each competition.

"It's not like the Champions League is like you have to work less than the Premier League. He's doing well, he's really giving his absolute all in training. We have to be careful with him as well and then we will see when we can use him.

"Thiago is back in training. It means he is ready. For how long we will see. Hendo, we had the results of the scan and it will be after the international break, I think, he will be back."

Napoli 4-1 Liverpool

Looks like Klopp might be joining Tuchel at job centre soon.

One of the worst defensive performances Liverpool have ever had under Klopp.

Last season Liverpool were so close to an unprecedented quadruple of major trophies. Yet four months on from defeat in the Champions League final, Jurgen Klopp is now asking whether his side need to "reinvent ourselves".

Wednesday's 4-1 humbling by Napoli meant Liverpool have now picked up just two wins in their first seven games in all competitions this season.

Former England defender Jonathan Woodgate told BBC Radio 5 Live how Napoli had 'destroyed' Liverpool and the Reds lacked energy.

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand described the defeat as "embarrassing" on BT Sport, while ex-Liverpool striker Michael Owen said it could be "shaping up to be a season to forget".

Klopp has overseen success at Liverpool since his arrival in 2015 but after a worrying start to the campaign is it time to make changes?

'I need time to think about it'
Liverpool were 3-0 down at half-time as they slumped to their joint worst defeat in the Champions League.

"We played bad in the first half but usually we don't concede three goals," said Klopp, who has seen his squad hit by injuries this season and lose Sadio Mane to Bayern Munich in the summer.

"With Alisson in goal, you have to be really bad for that to happen. It looks like we have to reinvent ourselves. There is a lot of things lacking.

"We have Wolves on Saturday and they cannot stop laughing probably. They would say - and I would too - it is the perfect moment to play them [Liverpool]. We have to set up better in pretty much everything.

"In football there are always solutions. We don't play good enough, that is obvious and that is why we lose games. There is a job to do, my responsibility and I need time to think about it."

You can now get Liverpool news notifications in the BBC Sport app - find out more
Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson said the players needed to "get back to basics" following a defensive debacle.

"We were miles too open. You can't come to a place like this and not be compact," he added.

"We deserved this result. You have to be ready to fight. We weren't close enough to our mates. We have to wake up and quickly because we can't perform like that."

Liverpool 'lacked desire and fight'
Individual errors were costly in Naples as Joe Gomez and Trent Alexander-Arnold particularly struggled against the lively Italian side.

Piotr Zielinski put Napoli ahead from the spot in the fifth minute before Andre-Frank Anguissa and Giovanni Simeone made it 3-0 at the break.

Zielinski scored again two minutes into the second half and by the time Luis Diaz scored the damage had already been done.

Ferdinand said you could "see the anger with Klopp" and questioned the desire of Liverpool's players, while ex-Reds defender Jamie Carragher described it as a "defensive shambles".

"The cutting comment is ' we have to reinvent ourselves' - that is a big statement to make," added Ferdinand.

"There are players there he is going to grill. You can't have players where you question their desire. His success is built on commitment and he is not getting that with the way the team is playing right now.

"There are not many times where you can say Liverpool lacked desire and fight and [here] they lacked all those things. Too many of their big stars are nowhere near the levels we are used to."

Owen added: "Napoli had strength and desire but it is a catalogue of errors from Liverpool. Liverpool fans have been expecting it for a while. They haven't been great in the last few weeks."

But is Klopp "too good a manager" to not find a solution?

The German boss, who has won every domestic trophy with Liverpool, as well as the Champions League during his time at the club, said he needed "time to think about it".

"We were not compact defensively or offensively," added Klopp.

"Everything is obvious but why it happened, I cannot answer now. It is a really tough cookie to take, but I have to take it."

On the day Chelsea sacked manager Thomas Tuchel, Klopp was even asked in the news conference if he was concerned for his own position.

"Not really, our owners are rather calm and expect me to sort the situation and not think someone else will," he responded.

After last season's efforts, which led Liverpool to within a point of Manchester City in the Premier League title race, the Champions League final and two domestic cup wins, the contrast in performances during 2022-23 have been stark.

And they don't have long to reinvent themselves as their next match against Wolves in the Premier League is on Saturday at Anfield (15:00 BST).

Watched this one. Liverpool were absolutely awful, particularly in the first half where it could have been 6-0. The high press seems to have run its course. Klopp needs to change things around quickly or he will soon be waking up to his P45.

Klopp has some major issues to resolve. The sudden dip in performances is alarming. Looks like the Klopp system has taken it’s toll and has become predictable.

Also, FSG buy to sell model is crippling the squad. There simply is no depth.

Worrying times indeed.

Joel Matip's late header gave Liverpool their first Champions League win this season with a dramatic victory against Ajax at Anfield.

Manager Jurgen Klopp demanded a reaction to the "horror show" of the 4-1 defeat away to Napoli in their opening Group A game and this was certainly a vast improvement.

Liverpool created plenty of openings and were deservedly ahead after 17 minutes when Mohamed Salah swept home Diogo Jota's pass.

Ajax had barely threatened but were level 10 minutes later when Mohammed Kudus thumped in an emphatic finish off the underside of the bar after he was played in by Steven Berghuis.

Liverpool created chances in front of The Kop - while Daley Blind missed a great chance to put Ajax ahead late on - before Matip rose to head home from a corner in the closing moments.

BBC

Again we huffed and puffed all evening. Created our chances as usual yet the poor midfield was again for everyone to see. At least Salah showed some glimpses of his old self with a clinical finish putting us in front. They scored a fine goal too somewhat on the counter attack with another great finish. At Anfield the roar of the fans pulls the ball in the net as was the case again.

JK is the one to rebuild our midfield when and if the owners loosen the purse strings. Those few LFC fans demanding the manager be sacked should be in a mental asylum. Dare I say VVD has been somewhat struggling since he has returned from that major injury he suffered.

Virgil Van Dijk: Liverpool defender feels responsible for inconsistent start to the season

Virgil Van Dijk says he feels responsibility for Liverpool's inconsistent start to the season.

The centre-back has captained the side in the absence of Jordan Henderson, with the Reds failing to hit top form.

Liverpool have won just two of their first six league games and suffered a 4-1 Champions League defeat to Napoli.

"If we do well I obviously get praise and if we don't then I don't," said Van Dijk. "But I still think I need to improve and that's fine."

The Netherlands international added: "The only way to do it is to play the games, learn from the mistakes, don't listen to the outside world too much, speak to the people close to you.

"I've said it many times, we are all human beings and we all want to do as well as we can and the same goes for me. I know for a fact I can do much better, but we all can do better.

"I feel very hurt if we concede goals and don't keep clean sheets and I feel that responsibility, but that's a good thing.

"I want to turn this season around not for myself, but for all of us associated with the club."

Van Dijk also mentioned criticism Liverpool had received from pundits.

"What we did last week [losing against Napoli] was unacceptable, all of us, and the days after that game we definitely had a reality check," he said.

"The obvious criticism is there, but ex-pros and players who have played at this level know there are times when you can have a blip, a period like this unfortunately, and it is how you react to it.

"They have been in our situation and everyone has been acting like you can't have a bad period, a difficult game or a difficult situation.

"It is too easy to say these type of things, but they are doing their job and that is what they do."

The 2-1 win over Ajax on Tuesday, which gave Jurgen Klopp's side their first Champions League points of the campaign, came after they took the lead for only the second time in eight matches this season.

Even then they were not defensively resilient enough to keep out their opponents and that frailty has been one of the major causes of their problems.

Van Dijk believes the Ajax win has given them a base from which to build and improve.

"We showed glimpses [against Ajax] of what we normally are. We are good if we perform as a team," he said.

Liverpool coach John Achterberg and Newcastle head of performance Daniel Hodges have been fined and banned by the Football Association after an incident in the Reds' 2-1 win.

Members of both teams' coaching staff clashed after Fabio Carvalho's 98th-minute winner on 31 August.

Achterberg has been fined £7,000, while Hodges has been fined £6,000.

Both have been banned from the touchline for one fixture and warned about their future conduct.

Achterberg, Liverpool's goalkeeping coach, has accepted he used abusive and/or insulting gestures, while both men have admitted their behaviour was improper.

It follows a review by the FA into an incident where a Newcastle staff member appeared to throw an object towards the Liverpool technical area.

Jurgen Klopp would pick "exceptional" Trent Alexander-Arnold in any team after the full-back was overlooked by England manager Gareth Southgate.

The Liverpool defender, 23, did not figure against Italy and was dropped from the squad that drew with Germany.

Reds boss Klopp says there is "space for improvement" in Alexander-Arnold's defensive game, but his offensive ability is "so extreme".

"I'd decide obviously differently, but I'm not in charge," said Klopp.

"My point of view, it's an easy pick. Whichever team I would coach in the moment, I would sign him because he is exceptional."

Southgate has said he feels Alexander-Arnold's "all-round game" is behind that of right-back rival Kieran Trippier.

Alexander-Arnold, who missed last year's European Championship through injury, has made just one international appearance this year.

He has been a key player for a Liverpool side that has won the Premier League and Champions League in recent years, but he has struggled to transfer that form to international football and has won just 17 caps since his 2018 debut.

"You really want to open this box?" said Klopp.

"We are fine here because it's completely different because I see him differently. It's obvious.

"There are stories out there all the time that talk about him and say he's not a good defender, but that's not true.

"He is a good defender. He doesn't always defend good, that is true as well, but that is what we're working on - he is a young player, he is 23.

"There is space for improvement, definitely, but we only discuss it on the level we discuss it because his offensive impact is so extreme for us. It could be for each team in the world."

Southgate prefers to start with Chelsea's Reece James, who can also play as part of a back three, with Trippier as back-up, making Alexander-Arnold's chances of being in England's World Cup squad increasingly slim.

But Klopp believes Alexander-Arnold could still find a way to prosper in the current squad, and has no concerns about his player's response to his latest England setback.

He added: "Trent came back and was not in a party mood, but he just accepts the decision of the manager as well because he understands football pretty well.

"He is an extremely smart boy and in football you cannot offer more than you can offer.

"For me he is a world-class player, and not playing for your country is difficult, but it is only because there are other world-class players as well.

"England is obviously blessed with a lot of really talented players in a similar position and it's difficult to line them all up together.

"In this case, it could work. Reece James can play in a three in the back, and that would be interesting to see how they could interchange positions."

Trent is terrible at defending. Must improve drastically at the back if he's gonna become a Liverpool legend.

3-3 against Brighton today.

On 10 points and now 11 points behind leaders Arsenal.

Leandro Trossard scored a hat-trick as Brighton marked new coach Roberto de Zerbi's debut with a hugely entertaining and battling draw against Liverpool at Anfield.

The Seagulls had raced into a two-goal lead with the Reds, playing their first Premier League game in 28 days after the international break, having made a sluggish start.

Trossard got the first after just four minutes when he thumped into the bottom corner from Danny Welbeck's pass before adding a second in near identical fashion 13 minutes later, this time from Solly March's ball.

Roberto Firmino started a Liverpool fightback before half-time when he drove in, with the goal given by the video assistant referee (VAR) after initially being ruled out for offside.

The Brazilian equalised nine minutes after the break when substitute Luis Diaz found Firmino, who coolly wrongfooted his marker before firing in from close range.

There was a sense of inevitability as a hungry Liverpool continued to come forward and they duly got a third when Adam Webster turned into his own net under pressure from Firmino.

But Trossard had the final say as he scooped in at the back post late on to secure the match ball and a point for his side.

The draw means Brighton remain fourth but Liverpool are ninth, 11 points behind leaders Arsenal but with one game in hand.

This was a game that arguably highlighted both the best and worst of this current Liverpool side.

On the one hand, their fightback was like the Liverpool of old where, after a dreadful first 25 minutes, there was the growing sense the Reds would get themselves ahead at some point.

But on the other hand, it was another poor start that ultimately cost them the three points.

Liverpool have now conceded the first goal in five of their seven Premier League games this season and working out how to get the Reds starting on the front foot once again is the challenge facing manager Jurgen Klopp at the moment.

The determination and character that took Liverpool to within a point of champions Manchester City last season is there but they need to rediscover their focus before the title race slips away from them.

VVD has not been the same after the injury he suffered. Trent is a liability at the back and we sold the wrong player in Mane over Salah. This is what happens when you keep depending on OAP's like Milner instead of signing new players. Had it not been for Alisson we would have easily lost this match. Darwin must start seeing how much we spent on him otherwise it defeats the purpose. Now JK will again try to explain something that only he can understand like Rafa Benitez did. Although I'll support the team evermore every LFC fan will be spitting blood today. I think Rangers will beat us on Tuesday if there is no massive improvement

Manager Jurgen Klopp says Liverpool "could have won, but didn't deserve to" as they drew 3-3 with Brighton at Anfield.

Next 4 fixtures for Liverpool:

Rangers (H)
Arsenal (A)
Rangers (A)
Man City (H)

Klopp I think needs 3 wins out of 4 from these games, or he could find himself in a bit of trouble.

Liverpool will beat Rangers at home this week, but the other three fixtures look pretty tough.

Ya know we are linked with every top player but never get him. Other teams with more money can easily out bid us like they will with Bellingham.Until the owners loosen the purse strings we'll always have to settle for our second or third choices. Our midfield is an embarrassment compared to other top sides where as the once water tight defence now leaks more then the titanic. Opponents can cut our defence like a knife does hot butter.

Liverpool: Trent Alexander-Arnold could be one of best ever - Gary Neville

Liverpool's Trent Alexander-Arnold can be one of the world's best ever right-backs if he works on his defending, says Gary Neville.

Alexander-Arnold, 23, has come under increased scrutiny and criticism this season as he has struggled for form.

He was picked for England recently but did not play against Italy and was dropped from the squad to face Germany.

"No full-back that I've ever seen in this country can do what he can do," Neville told Sky Sports.

"So, if he can just work on those basic [defensive] things and get consistency, we won't just have one of the best attacking right-backs this country has ever produced, we will probably have the best right-back the world has ever produced.

"This is a [Brazil legend] Cafu - that level of full-back, this is something unbelievably special."

Former England right-back Neville played 85 times for his country and made 602 appearances for Manchester United.

He said there was an "imbalance" to Alexander-Arnold's game, with the attacking element outweighing the defensive side.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp defended his "exceptional" player after his England omission by manager Gareth Southgate, but agreed there is "space for improvement" in Alexander-Arnold's defensive game.

"I think Trent has to work on his defending," said Neville. "I said it a few years ago that there was a lack of seriousness in his defending and there was a lack of alertness. At some point in his career, it will hold him back."

Following the recent round of international games, Southgate said Alexander-Arnold's "all-round game" was behind that of Newcastle United right-back Kieran Trippier.

There is a danger the Liverpool player could be left out of the England squad for the 2022 World Cup, but Neville thinks that could be a blessing in disguise.

"This is an important juncture of his career. What does he do, does he think I don't have to do that, I don't want to do that?" added Neville.

"There might be a negative of him not going to the World Cup [but] that might be the biggest positive of his career, if he can have five to six weeks here just literally being coached."

liverpools next to league games are Arsenal and city. They are capable of winning both as they are a good team still.

If they fail to win both, then that would be just 2 league wins from 9 games, is that then sackable?

Definitely getting close to sackable if that happens.

Definitely getting close to sackable if that happens.

In reality they win both games and there game in hand (chelsea away) current gap at top isnt that bad.

Not win both and they could be around 14 points a drift and for a club like liverpool is not acceptable.

Virgil van Dijk says wellbeing of players is 'forgotten' after Alexander-Arnold criticism

Virgil van Dijk says the well-being of players in the UK is "forgotten" amid criticism of Liverpool team-mate Trent Alexander-Arnold.

There has been an intense focus on the defender's recent performances after an indifferent start to the season.

"Everyone here is very good to praise a player very high up to the sky and let them fall as hard as they can," said Netherlands defender Van Dijk.

"That's what we, as players, have to deal with."

Van Dijk, 31, added: "We forget about the wellbeing of players, we forget about that stuff and everyone is talking about how we should all accept it.

"For him to just carry on working - not only him but other players as well - and deal with it and show a reaction is what we need, all of us.

"To do that I think it's important that we back him and the manager and the club and the fans."

Klopp: We are work in progress

On where Liverpool are after their poor start: "When you spot a problem, and you think about it, you want the solution instantly to click. Immediately.

"We are still in progress to find a way out, that's how it is. You can't say we were in a dark place and now we're back, we need consistency, and for that we need to defend the rubbish out of everybody, pretty much.

"I'm not interested in short-term diagnosis, that was good, that was bad, we have to good until we are outstanding. I know, Arsenal and Rangers away and then Man City - what can I say, yes we are through the tunnel and I can see the light, but we have to perform.

"The body language was good [against Rangers], but other things have to be good and remain on Sunday."

Jurgen Klopp says Liverpool "have to be more unpredictable" to get back to their best and acknowledged low confidence has hit their previously relentless pressing game.

<b>Liverpool midfielder Arthur Melo is set for months on the sidelines as he needs surgery on an injury sustained during training.</b>

The Brazil international, 26, was a deadline-day signing on a season-long loan from Italian club Juventus.

Speaking on Friday, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said Arthur had suffered the injury in training on Monday.

He is now reportedly expected to be out for three to four months as he recovers.

The injury means any lingering hopes he had to play at the World Cup in Qatar this winter are likely to be over.

Arthur hasn't started a match for Liverpool since he joined, his only minutes of senior football coming as a late substitute in September's 4-1 Champions League defeat at Napoli.

Jurgen Klopp: I hope Mohamed Salah is close to exploding like Liverpool

Jurgen Klopp hopes Mohamed Salah and Liverpool are close to rediscovering their best form ahead of their Super Sunday trip to Premier League leaders Arsenal.

Liverpool have endured a difficult start to the season, winning just twice in the league so far to leave them a mammoth 11 points behind Mikel Arteta's team, albeit with a game in hand on the Gunners.

Meanwhile, Salah - last season's joint-top scorer in the Premier League - has scored only two goals in the league so far this campaign, although Klopp thinks the Egypt forward could be returning to his best form.

"With Mo, I hope it's like us, we are close to exploding," Klopp said. "Even when his goalscoring numbers aren't crazy, his goal involvements are good.

"His passing is good. Nobody can cope with the [Erling] Haaland situation, it's crazy what he's doing. Exceptional player in an exceptional team and we shouldn't compare anyone with that.

"Mo wants to score goals desperately. Call him in 20 years, it will be the same."

Klopp has predicted a tough afternoon in the capital on Sunday against an Arsenal side who are on top of their game, having lost just once all campaign, a run of results that sees them lead champions Man City by a point.

"Arsenal was always there, City was always there with Manuel Pellegrini when I first arrived, I think," he said. "Their football is now better, quicker, more intense.

"If you are a top manager, you arrive here pretty much in a year. Top-class managers all round makes it more difficult.

"I'm pretty sure arsenal fans are pretty happy with situation they now find themselves.

"Maybe similarities to when I took over at Liverpool. A big club and we've had big games against them. Now they are ready for the next step."

As for his own struggling team, Klopp dismissed suggestions Liverpool could currently be suffering the effects of having been coached by the German for seven years.

Klopp, who arrived at Anfield in 2015, left both his two previous jobs - at Mainz and Borussia Dortmund - after seven years at the helm.

However, it is a comparison he rejects.

"I had no plans for seven years," he said. "I think I mentioned four years at that first press conference. That day I was happy to survive the press conference!

"I should have done that before I signed a new contract. Seven-year itch? At Mainz the club needed a change, a fresh start.

"I went to Dortmund and was fine. Seven years and it was just the situation, players got bought up by other teams. Constantly two steps back, which was really intense and exhausting.

"And I thought I'd give a holiday a try and that only lasted four months for that!

"We are in a difficult moment, but it's not to do with seven years. Does it look like we will be champions? Probably not, but not impossible."

It’s gone from bad to worse. Liv looking like a old, laboured side.

Salah retired After new contract.
TAA retired at HT during Arsenal game.
Klopp to be sacked after man city game next week, good times 😂

10th place, 14 points behind the leaders.

Disastrous season so far.

The players look lost out there.

Our downfall coincides with the departure of Sadio Mane. There is a complete lack of energy and closing down tactics that have been the hallmark of how we have played over Jurgen's reign. When you spend next to nothing in the market whilst your rivals are spending millions for fun then this is to be expected. Jurgen's tactics of either signing our top target or no one is not working anymore, he should stop dreaming of signing Jude Bellingham if we finish outside the top four as it seems very likely. It appears as if we have swapped places with the Arsenal side from over the years defending terribly in particular Trent is a joke at the back and VVD seems finished to me.

It is in the midfield where we are lacking in big numbers. Ox Milly, Keita and even Hendo are either past their sell by date or too old to be in the starting line up. Salah again was anonymous hardly getting a touch all match until he was substituted. This season so early on is a complete right off as far as winning the EPL title is concerned. Disappointed, very disappointed indeed.

Then we sign Melo a clear panic buy who is already out for this entire year. Not gonna say it's all doom and gloom but we ain't winning the league. We need to sign some world class players in January to give us a chance of having a decent season. The American owners will again be giving us small change to spend in a few months.

Mikel Arteta thanked the Arsenal fans for generating an atmosphere he has never witnessed before after his side claimed a seismic 3-2 win over Liverpool.

The Gunners clinched an eighth victory of the season and reclaimed top spot in the Premier League after Bukayo Saka's winner from the penalty spot ended Liverpool's challenge after they fought back from a goal down twice at a feverish Emirates Stadium.

Arteta called on his players to give the Arsenal faithful something to cheer about and Gabriel Martinelli's 58-second opener did just that, setting the tone for a memorable victory which further fuelled the lofty expectations growing in north London.

"Thank you so much to the boys and our supporters for experiencing an afternoon like this," Arteta said. "It's why we are here, and I really enjoyed it, especially the way we won.

"I've never seen it like this. You cannot imagine how much it helps the players and how much belief and confidence, how much support… it's one of the nicest things we've done since we've been together here - to unite everybody and feel like you go here and you're going to have some experience. It's great.

"The feeling of winning is so powerful and so meaningful for me today for me, I saw a team I really identify with, the personality they show in difficult moments, how they stick to what they have to do but at the same time, the belief, the courage, and the free mind to just go for it and attack them and put them under pressure."

Despite striking in the first minute, Arsenal saw Liverpool wrestle back momentum and deservedly equalise through Darwin Nunez on 34 minutes.

The Gunners restored their lead on the stroke of half-time through Saka's first, but that was not enough to escape the wrath of Arteta during the interval, where he delivered a 'lively' team talk which equipped his players for an improved second period.

"It was a lively half-time team talk, but I wanted to give them some encouragement and confidence the game was there for the taking," Arteta added. "There were obviously a few things we had to adjust and be better at; more composure and more courage to play.

"Everything was better in the second half. The organisation, the timing of the press, we won every duel and second ball. I was really happy with that."

By contrast, Liverpool's third defeat of the season confirmed their worst points return at this stage of a Premier League campaign in 10 years.

The Reds have 10 points on the board after eight games - 14 shy of leaders Arsenal - and their early-season stutters have forced manager Jurgen Klopp to concede their title chances are already over.

"We're not in the title race," Klopp said. "We have problems at the moment, but we have to continue. In a situation like ours, we will go out there and fight. We are not here for being happy with the situation and thinking about last year.

"We are very disappointed. Around all three goals we made decisive mistakes. The first goal is not what you need. A bad start.

"We start controlling the game against a very aggressive, full-of-confidence Arsenal side. We showed we're here for a reason, scored an equaliser, a wonderful goal. Then it's an open game and advantage for us.

"Then we make a bad decision before half time, what are we doing? Worst possible start, worst possible end."

Klopp questioned the decision to penalise Thiago Alcantara's challenge on Gabriel Jesus, which handed Arsenal their winner, and not to punish Gabriel Magalhaes for handball in the first half.

The Sky Sports pundits all agreed the foul for Arsenal's winning penalty was contentious but Paul Merson would have awarded the spot-kick
"Arsenal came out very aggressive [for the second half]. We scored an equaliser, then a real open game, slight advantage for us. Then the penalty happens," he added.

"He thought immediately it was a penalty, which was interesting. [VAR] Mr England had a look and if two refs think the same it's the truth we have to live with.

"If there was contact - and I'm not sure there was but there might have been soft contact - the player goes again on both feet and then down and that's an indication something might have been made up… But not for the refs.

"But they thought it was clear not a handball in the first half when Diogo put the pull on [Gabriel's] arm. We cannot change that."

With Manchester City travelling to Anfield next, Liverpool's defeat was compounded by injuries to Luis Diaz, who was withdrawn in the first half, and Trent Alexander-Arnold, who was brought off during the interval.

"Luis Diaz we had to change, something with the knee, not good," Klopp explained. "He will have a scan.

"On top of that, Trent's is bad with his twisted ankle. Trent never in seven years went off if he could play on. Much pain, swelling immediately...

"Our situation now is a really difficult one. With injuries on top of that. These decisions go against you, it's kind of typical but doesn't help. We've lost the game with a lot of good moments, and could have got a result. A draw would have been a deserved result."

And it gets worse:

Liverpool forward Luis Diaz is expected to be sidelined until December after suffering a knee injury in Sunday's 3-2 Premier League defeat at Arsenal.

The Colombia international, 25, had a scan on Monday and does not require surgery but will not play for the Reds again until after the World Cup.

The Reds are due to play 10 matches before England's elite clubs break for the tournament on 13 November.

Liverpool return to action with a trip to Aston Villa on 26 December.

Diaz, who has been one of Liverpool's better performers in a disappointing start to the campaign, left Emirates Stadium on crutches wearing a knee brace having limped off shortly before the break after Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey landed on his knee.

Trent Alexander-Arnold was also withdrawn at half-time after sustaining an ankle problem with manager Jurgen Klopp saying that it did not "look good for both".

BREAKING: Liverpool defenders Joel Matip and Trent Alexander-Arnold are both expected to be out injured for up to two weeks

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp criticises officials' decision-making during Premier League defeat to Arsenal

Jurgen Klopp has criticised referee Michael Oliver's decision-making during Liverpool's 3-2 defeat to Arsenal and also hit back at former Liverpool midfielder Dietmar Hamann for claiming his side "lack spark".

The Reds controversially conceded a penalty when Thiago Alcantara made light contact with Gabriel Jesus in the 18-yard box, which led to the Gunners' third goal, and they were denied one of their own when Diogo Jota's cross struck defender Gabriel on the arm.

It later emerged that the Gabriel Martinelli's opener after just 58 seconds at the Emirates might have been ruled out had Bukayo Saka not been in a camera blind spot when he received the ball from Ben White in the build-up, meaning the VAR could not draw the lines to determine whether he was offside.

Speaking in his press conference ahead of Liverpool's Champions League clash with Rangers on Wednesday, Klopp said: "On Sky Sports' Ref Watch, when Mr Dermot [Gallagher] twice says the decision was wrong by the best English referee Michael Oliver... the TV ref usually always says exactly what the ref decided was right.

"Before the season, we had a big meeting with the refs and they said no soft penalties anymore. Then we've seen already this season which kind of situations we have for handball and there were penalties with exactly the same situations, but not in this game.

"We conceded silly goals, especially the second one in the first half, but between the first and second goal, we played against a team in form in the league a really good game.

"Then I get the information only later after that because nobody could show that before, Saka was probably offside around the first goal and all of a sudden a bad defending situation becomes a good defending situation because he would have been offside, just the assistant didn't see it or thought VAR would check it and VAR had no camera.

"We are responsible for the situation around the penalty situation. We should have cleared it before, but it was still no penalty. We are responsible for going through a set-piece and conceding a counter-attack, of course, and we cannot be responsible for the first goal because it was good defending and it was offside.

"It's really tricky and yes we can play better, but we didn't go to Arsenal to show how good we are, we went to Arsenal to win the game.

"We lost it in the way we lost it so now it's difficult to judge, so what did we miss in this specific game? Just the right ref decisions would have been helpful, to be 100 per cent honest, then we could judge the game. Then, if we win that game, to the outside world, our problems are completely sorted. We know it's not like that. Now we lost the game and three players and that's the exact opposite what should have happened."

The German was in no mood to tolerate Hamann's claim, either, when it was raised again in the press conference.

"He is a fantastic source, well respected everywhere," Klopp said, sarcastically.

"It [having played for Liverpool] doesn't give you the right to say whatever you want, especially when you have no idea. I actually think Hamann doesn't deserve you to use his phrase to ask me a question. Do me a favour and ask your own question.

"We have to keep fighting. It will not happen overnight."

BREAKING: Liverpool defenders Joel Matip and Trent Alexander-Arnold are both expected to be out injured for up to two weeks

Matips injury is genuine.

TAA is not injured and its just a cover up to keep him out of side for a few weeks.

Only thing hurt on sunday was his pride.

Injuries, poor form, manager doesn’t seem to have many answers, and Manchester City about to pay them a visit after Haaland has been rested.

Klopp needs to squeeze out a result from somewhere this weekend otherwise he will be on the verge of being called into a board meeting.

Liverpool put their recent Premier League struggles behind them to end Manchester City's unbeaten run in an enthralling and hot-tempered encounter at Anfield, which saw Jurgen Klopp sent off.

City, fuelled by the goals of Erling Haaland, were in prime condition but Liverpool finally found the form which has deserted them for much of the season to overcome the reigning champions.

Haaland, for once, was not on the scoresheet and it was Liverpool's talisman Mohamed Salah who made the vital contribution, racing on to a clearance from keeper Alisson after Joao Cancelo's slip to beat Ederson with a composed finish with 14 minutes left.

Ederson had produced a brilliant save to deny Salah in a similar one-on-one situation while City manager Pep Guardiola was furious that a Phil Foden goal that would have put his side ahead was ruled out by the video assistant referee for Haaland's foul on Fabinho.

This was not to be Haaland's day, although he did bring two saves from Alisson, but Anfield was left exultant as Liverpool at last showed why they have consistently been City's biggest threat.

In a frantic finale, tempers boiled over and Klopp was sent off by referee Anthony Taylor for his protests after he felt Salah was fouled - but when temperatures cool he will be overjoyed by a statement win.

Great performance by the boys particularly VVD and Salah. Created many chances as did City in what was an evenly contested match. Good decision by the ref when disallowing City's goal after Fab was clearly pulled down by Haaland. With so many first team players on the treatment table this win is not to be under estimated even if we're not in the title race. We are a team who plays with high energy right from the start we need to have the momentum behind us.

Massive win, we needed that. Bossed the game, could have had more.

All of them players were excellent in their positions. Special mentions, James Milner 36, at rb pocketed Foden. Gomez was immense him and VVD dealt with Haaland quite easily.

Mohamed Salah! Put some respect on his name! Looked angry and played hard!

Great win today.

Much needed and showed some grit.

Could kickstart their season.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has just confirmed that Portugal forward Diogo Jota will miss the World Cup after sustaining a calf injury in Sunday's win over Manchester City.

Great win today.

Much needed and showed some grit.

Could kickstart their season.

There next 4 out of 5 fixtures in league are easy on paper so they could easily start to real of points again.

Very inconsistent LFC this season. Not gonna work.

Certainly don’t look like a Top 4 side in this game.

We have to shake it off and go again'

FT: Nottingham Forest 1-0 Liverpool

Liverpool

Liverpool's James Milner speaking to BT Sport: "Obviously we didn't perform how we wanted to. We had a lot of chances to score goals and didn't take them. We weren't alive enough for the second balls and we didn't create enough chances. Ali has made a lot of good saves and we could have defender better. We did everything we wanted to do other than put the ball in the back of the net."

On shaking this defeat off quickly: "That's where are. Games come thick and fast. You've got tonight to be disappointed but we have to shake it off and go again."

It is the midfield that needs to be sorted. Ox and Keita need to be shown the door for sure. Fab seems out of form and Hendo is also past his sell by date. Milner is too old to command a regular place where is Thiago is another injury prone crock. JK said "we don't need another midfielder" only to panic a few days later then bought in Melo who also got injured too. It must be the training method or JK not doing his homework on players that we always have so many injuries. No matter what we should have easily defeated Notts Forest yesterday.
