Red Devils face scary October

Manchester United will have their squad depth tested to the limit in October as they will have to fit three Europa League group games around a gruelling Premier League schedule.

The Red Devils have six tricky league fixtures during the month, beginning with a Manchester derby at the Etihad and featuring a trip to Chelsea straight after the midweek visit of Tottenham.

However, the fixture computer has cut Erik ten Hag some slack, with the mid-season break for the World Cup bookended by matches against two of the promoted teams and a relatively easy run-in.

With international players likely to have one eye on the World Cup by the time November rolls around, Man City, Liverpool, and Spurs have also been handed favourable fixtures either side of the Qatar showpiece.

Thomas Frank's Brentford can once again feel a little hard done by, with games against three of last season's top four scheduled around the World Cup. The Bees' woes are compounded by a two-day trip to West Ham on New Year's Eve before hosting Liverpool on January 2.

Frenkie de Jong to Man Utd latest

While their rivals are wrapping up deals quickly, Manchester United are doing anything but. Erik ten Hag is still waiting for his first transfer splash of the window and is chasing Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong.

Recent reports have suggested that the two European heavyweights are still locked in talks, but have a £17m difference in valuations to bridge before a deal can move forward.

Manchester United chief executive Richard Arnold headed off a planned protest outside his Cheshire house by meeting some fans in his local pub.

Arnold, the club's most senior executive, discovered the supporters had met up in the pub before their protest and went to meet them instead.

Part of the discussion was secretly filmed and posted on social media.

Arnold, 51, appears to be filmed saying United had "burned" through £1bn on players over the past few years.

He also says the money that new manager Erik ten Hag and director of football John Murtough want to spend on new players "is there".

It is understood talks are continuing with Barcelona over Dutch midfielder Frenkie de Jong, who is Ten Hag's number one summer transfer target.

United have not won the Premier League since 2013 and last won a trophy in 2017. They finished last season in sixth place, having sacked Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and replaced him with interim boss Ralf Rangnick.

Arnold described last season as "a nightmare" but he also criticised the fan protests that were held at many of the club's final home games of the season.

Fans held various protests against the Glazer family's ownership of the Old Trafford club last season at home games and the training ground.

Tyson Fury urged Manchester United to have a clear out of all the ‘prima donnas’ at Old Trafford.

The retired WBC heavyweight boxing champion is a huge Red Devils supporter and now has a lot more time on his hands to watch them.

Fury called time on his career after knocking out Dillian Whyte at Wembley in April, despite fans wanting to see an undisputed clash with either Anthony Joshua or Oleksandr Usyk.

The 33-year-old is yet to relinquish the belt and he told talkSPORT this week that it would take around £500million to get him out of retirement.

Fury knows a thing or two about what it takes to be at the top level of sport, and ripped apart the current state of United.

Fury told The Mirror: “I’ll be getting to Old Trafford a little bit more now I’m retired although, to be honest, every time I go there to watch them, they lose. And I don’t do second place, I don’t do losing, I don’t do all that s****. It’s win or nothing, so watching United at the moment, it’s crazy because I don’t get why these people aren’t running after that ball for 90 minutes.

“A lot of people blame the managers, the coaches, but at the end of the day there are too many prima donnas at Manchester United and the best thing that could have happened is having a clearout, like what’s happening. They need to knuckle down.

“They need someone strict, like Sir Alex Ferguson, who’s going to tell them what to do and if they’re not listening say, ‘It’s the bench for you, I don’t care how good you are or how famous you are, you’re not playing until you decide to work hard’. The word ‘team’ means everybody pulls their own weight, they don’t rely on someone else to score the goals or to run for them.

Man United recorded their worst Premier League points total ever last season

“It’s everyone working hard for a common interest, a common goal, and that’s winning. I know nothing about managing football but I know everything about winning and I know everybody has to muck in to get results. If I go into the gym on my own to train for a world title then I’m not going to be that successful.

“Which is why I have a full team — my masseuse, my strength-and-conditioning guy, my sparring partners, coaches, that sort of stuff — and we’re all pulling in the same direction to go in there and get results, because that’s what’s needed. If some of these guys are pulling in different directions and doing it for their own benefit, we wouldn’t be getting the results year in, year out.”

Fury also offered up his own theory on United hero Cristiano Ronaldo, who scored 24 goals in all competitions last season since his move back from Juventus.

He added: “It’s good news Ronaldo is staying on, but here’s a theory: when they didn’t have him the season before last, they finished second in the Premier League, then we had Ronaldo and we finished sixth. People will say, ‘Well, if we hadn’t had him scoring 20 goals we’d have finished a lot lower last season’, but we didn’t the season before and we finished a lot higher.

“When you have a superstar like Ronaldo, everybody relies on him to score goals and if he wasn’t there they’d be scoring the goals themselves, like they did the season before last.

“I’m not saying he’s a bad asset, he’s a great asset, but sometimes with a star player, he carries the team and the young people are overshadowed by it all, they don’t get their chance to shine because ‘the great Ronaldo’ is on the pitch.”

Manchester United: Christian Eriksen contact made as Erik ten Hag plots Old Trafford rebuild

Manchester United have made initial contact with Christian Eriksen's representatives over a summer move to Old Trafford, Sky Sports News understands.

The 30-year-old is set to become a free agent at the end of the month following a short spell with Brentford, though he is thought to be weighing up his options before making a final decision on his future, with former employers Tottenham also interested.

New United boss Erik ten Hag is a long-term admirer of the Danish international and the feeling is that a deal could be done, but, ultimately, it will come down to the player.

The news follows growing unrest from Manchester United fans on social media about the lack of transfer activity so far this summer.

Speaking on Sky Sports News on Monday evening, reporter Dharmesh Sheth provided an update on the goings-on behind the scenes.

"The message I'm getting is there is no panic at Old Trafford," he said.

"United have a strategy about how they are going about their business. Yes, there are significant funds available to Erik ten Hag - but now more than ever, the emphasis is on getting the right players at the right price.

"Under the guidance of [football director] John Murtough, United are using a more streamlined scouting operation with strengthened data analysis."

Manchester United are in talks to sign Daniel Bachmann from Watford with the club in need of a new back-up goalkeeper.

Following Lee Grant’s retirement, United have three senior keepers, namely David de Gea, Tom Heaton and Dean Henderson.

However, Henderson is set to spend next season on loan at Nottingham Forest, with the 25-year-old looking for first-team football ahead of the World Cup in November.

As such, Erik ten Hag will require another shot stopper to serve as second or third choice behind De Gea, and Bachmann has been identified as a potential signing.

According to Fabrizio Romano, talks between the two clubs have already begun although Watford are only interested in selling the Austrian international on a permanent deal.

The transfer should not cost a great amount however, given the Hornets’ recent relegation from the Premier League.

Last season was not a good one for Watford, as the club laboured to 19th in the table, conceding 77 goals in the process, with only Norwich and Leeds having a leakier defence, and going through three different managers in the form of Xisco Munoz, Claudio Ranieri and Roy Hodgson.

Bachmann, 27, shared goalkeeping duties with former United player Ben Foster, but was unable to prevent Watford’s demise, shipping 32 goals in 13 games and failing to keep a single clean sheet.

United are linked with a number of different players this summer as Ten Hag begins his rebuild of the Red Devils with a £40million deal for Ajax winger Antony said to be very close.

Ten Hag is also still pushing for Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong, but the defensive midfielder is proving hard to get, with the La Liga side wanting upwards of £70m for the Dutchman, who himself is keen on staying at the Nou Camp.

Manchester United are close to agreeing a deal with Barcelona for midfielder Frenkie de Jong

Sky Sports News has been told the clubs have a "broad agreement" on the fee - believed to be €65m plus performance related add-ons

Manchester United are "waiting" for Feyenoord left-back Tyrell Malacia to approve a move to Old Trafford after the Dutch club confirmed a fee had been agreed.

Manchester United hope to complete the €15m (£13m) signing of Tyrell Malacia after agreeing a deal to sign the full-back from Feyenoord.

A move for the 22-year-old has been complicated by an issue involving Malacia's representation.

The Dutch international was looked after by the same agent who deals with another United target, Frenkie De Jong.

However, Malacia wanted a family member to look after the contract discussions and the issue has now been resolved.

The left-back, who has five Dutch caps, was part of the Feyenoord team beaten by Roma in last season's Europa Conference League final.

He was also a target for French club Lyon before United stepped in and made their interest known.

United's international players are scheduled to return for pre-season training next week ahead of the club's departure on 8 July for their first pre-season game with Liverpool in Bangkok four days later.

The club's football director John Murtough remains in discussions with Barcelona over De Jong, who is new manager Erik Ten Hag's number one summer transfer target.

Manchester United have signed full-back Tyrell Malacia for £13m from Feyenoord on a four-year contract until June 2026, with the option of a further year.

The Netherlands defender, 22, made 136 appearances for his childhood club Feyenoord.

Malacia is the first new arrival of Erik ten Hag's tenure as United manager following his move from Ajax.

"It's an incredible feeling to have joined," he said.

Malacia added: "This is a new chapter for me, a new league with new team-mates and a tremendous manager leading us. I know from playing against his teams in the Eredivisie, the qualities that he has and what he demands of his players.

"While I know that I am still young and will continue to develop, I can promise the United fans that I will leave everything on the pitch every time I pull on the red shirt."

He had been in talks with French club Lyon before United stepped in.

It had been hoped the deal for the Dutch international would be done on Monday but it was delayed waiting for a work permit.

It is anticipated Malacia, who plays on the left side, will be part of the United squad that leaves for its pre-season trip to Thailand and Australia on Friday afternoon.

Barcelona have claimed that Frenkie de Jong is not for sale - even though Manchester United have a broad agreement in place to sign the midfielder.

Last week, United agreed a 65m euro (£56m) fee, plus add-ons, with Barca for the Netherlands international and that deal remains active.

But Barca president Joan Laporta said: "[De Jong] is a Barca player and unless we have a need or interest in selling him, we don't want to sell him."

De Jong joined from Ajax in 2019 for a fee of £65m plus £9.5m in variables, and signed a five-year contract. However, Barcelona may now need to sell high-earning players to balance the books.

BBC Sport understands an outline deal is in place with Premier League side United but progress towards completion has been slow.

A move to the Red Devils would reunite De Jong with his former Ajax boss Erik ten Hag, who is taking charge in his first season at Old Trafford.

Laporta added: "We know he [De Jong] has offers. If at some moment we were interested, we would consider it, but right now, we're not selling the player."

Senior Manchester United figures Richard Arnold and John Murtough have flown to Barcelona in a bid to break the impasse over the club's pursuit of Dutch midfielder Frenkie de Jong.

The 25-year-old is new manager Erik ten Hag's summer transfer priority.

However, any potential deal is being hampered by a contractual issue involving De Jong and Barcelona.

The problem centres on wages De Jong deferred during the pandemic which are due to be repaid over four years.

De Jong delayed receiving the funds to help the financially troubled Catalan club and the money would have been given back over the course of a new four-year contract which is about to take effect.

De Jong is reluctant to leave Barca given what he feels he is owed.

United have consistently stressed they have alternatives should their attempts to sign the former Ajax man prove unsuccessful.

However, the fact chief executive Arnold and football director Murtough have chosen to fly in for face-to-face talks with Barca officials underlines the desire to sign De Jong.

Under normal circumstances, at least one of them would have been in Thailand, where United begin their pre-season preparations against Liverpool on Tuesday.

BBC

Maybe things aren't as bad as it seems:

Erik ten Hag enjoyed a winning start as Manchester United manager as three first-half goals set up his side for an impressive 4-0 success over rivals Liverpool in Bangkok.

Jadon Sancho opened the scoring before Fred and Anthony Martial increased United's lead against a Liverpool side that made 21 changes across the 90 minutes, including half-hour cameos for new signings Darwin Nunez and Fabio Carvalho.

Young Uruguayan Facundo Pellistri added a fourth near the end as, in front of over 50,000 enthusiastic supporters in the Thai capital, Liverpool were made to pay for a combination of their profligacy at one end and defensive errors at the other.

It is, of course, only the start of pre-season, with some Liverpool players literally returning from holiday in the hours before Saturday's tour departure.

Of the starting line-ups, United's also contained far more players expected to be involved on the opening Premier League weekend.

But still, after the torture their fans have experienced over the past 12 months, this was a blessed relief and Ten Hag was applauded by the United contingent when his face was shown on the big screen in the dying minutes.

Fred's goal was outrageous. The Brazilian polarises opinion like no other United player, but his brilliant chip over fellow countryman Alisson, executed with precision from 20 yards, was jaw-dropping and will doubtless provide some fun when the pair next meet up on international duty.

Sancho's finish was calm, Martial's clinical. If Marcus Rashford had taken another opportunity, offensively, United would have been almost perfect.

Ten Hag, though, will also know his side were fortunate at times.

There was one ridiculous passage of play, during which impressive Liverpool new boy Carvalho and Luis Diaz, who also fluffed an easy rebound, both struck the post.

In addition, David de Gea needed to make four good saves, including one to deny Nunez, who was among Jurgen Klopp's final tranche of substitutes. They also included Mo Salah, who curled a shot against the post in the latter stages.

Boy ho boy! Ok it's a pre season game, but that was a mauling. Already under Ten hag we have a clear identity which we been crying out for.

Man Utd comfortable in Frenkie de Jong pursuit | Christian Eriksen deal 'progressing positively'

Manchester United remain comfortable in their position regarding a potential deal for Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong, while the signing of Chrisitan Eriksen is 'progressing positively'.

United have a "broad agreement" with Barcelona on the fee - believed to be €65m (£56m) plus performance-related add-ons.

Chief executive Richard Arnold and football director John Murtough continue talks with Barca officials over the transfer, but the deal is problematic because De Jong has backdated wage issues. It is thought he is owed £17m after taking a pay cut during the pandemic.

Meanwhile, the deal to bring in Christian Eriksen is said to be "progressing positively" and United are continuing talks with Ajax over defender Lisandro Martinez and remain interested in forward Antony.

United continue to insist that want-away Cristiano Ronaldo is not for sale.

Still an issue:

Manchester United have agreed a £63.5m deal with Barcelona for Frenkie de Jong but there is still no guarantee the move will go ahead.

Senior club figures have travelled to Barcelona to try to push through a deal for the Netherlands midfielder.

They now know what they have to pay for manager Erik ten Hag's number one target, with a bigger up-front payment and an additional £8.5m in add-ons.

However, the 25-year-old is locked in a contract dispute with Barcelona.

The contractual disagreement centres on deferred payments that were included in the playmaker's new four-year deal, which only became active on 1 July.

There have been widespread reports in Spain that Barcelona have told De Jong he needs to leave for financial reasons.

However, De Jong knows Barcelona must honour his contract if he chooses to remain at the Nou Camp and he is understood to be reluctant to leave without an agreement over his exit terms, which would take into account the deferred payments.

United have alternatives should De Jong not join but are willing to give the situation more time to resolve itself before taking an alternative course.

Meanwhile the club are also still unsure if Cristiano Ronaldo will return to pre-season training.

Confirmation that Chelsea are no longer interested in signing the 37-year-old has reduced his options away from Old Trafford.

BBC Sport understands there is substance to reports of a huge offer to Ronaldo from Saudi Arabia but the player is believed to want to keep playing at the highest possible level.

<b>Man Utd beat Melbourne Victory to maintain 100% pre-season record</b>

Manchester United came from behind to beat A League outfit Melbourne Victory 4-1 as they maintained their 100% start to pre-season.

Two goals in as many minutes from Scott McTominay and Anthony Martial at the end of the opening period turned the match around after Chris Ikonomidis' early effort had given Victory a shock lead.

As he did against Liverpool on Tuesday, United manager Erik ten Hag made 10 changes at the interval and Marcus Rashford added a third when he ran on to Eric Bailly's through ball.

Their comeback was completed when Tahith Chong's low cross was turned into his own net by Victory youngster Edmond Lupancu.

New manager Ten Hag's preferences are starting to show themselves as pre-season progresses.

Jadon Sancho played on the right of the attack in the first-half and Rashford on the left after the break.

Skipper Harry Maguire also started as the right centre-back, which is perhaps significant as Lisandro Martinez, the Argentina defender United are close to signing from Ajax, plays on the left.

England defender Maguire lacked the speed to match Ikonomidis as Melbourne took the lead when he finished a low cross after Victor Lindelof had to pull out wide to challenge Ben Folami with Luke Shaw out of position.

The noisy home fans behind the goal responded with a cheeky 'Getting sacked in the morning' chant.

Ten Hag looked stern and displeased as he stood on his own on the touchline watching his new charges struggle to break down a side at the beginning of their own pre-season preparations who were prepared to sit deep.

McTominay then enjoyed two bits of luck that led to his equaliser and once Martial had put them in front, United were never seriously threatened.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer spent 12 months trying to sign Sancho.

The Norwegian did not survive as United boss long enough to see if Sancho would be worth the £73m investment United eventually made in the England winger.

After a patchy debut campaign, more is expected this time around and while it is too early for snap judgements, the early signs are positive.

The former Borussia Dortmund's quick feet and excellent balance had the home defence in trouble and his combination with Diogo Dalot was the most effective in the United side.

It was Sancho's through ball that set up Bruno Fernandes for United's first chance, which Izzo saved, and the 22-year-old provided the pass that set Dalot away to deliver the cross Anthony Elanga touched on to Martial to put them in front.

Ten Hag spoke in the build-up to this game about the need for more penetration from the right-hand side.

If Sancho can build on his first two pre-season appearances, he might solve that issue for Ten Hag.

Manchester United have completed the signing of Denmark midfielder Christian Eriksen on a free transfer.

The former Ajax, Tottenham, Inter Milan and Brentford player has signed a three-year contract at Old Trafford.

"I still have major ambitions in the game. There is a huge amount that I know I can achieve, and this is the perfect place to continue my journey," Eriksen, 30, said.

"Manchester United is a special club, and I cannot wait to get started."

Earlier in July, Eriksen agreed in principle to sign for United after his short-term contract at Brentford ended in June.

He is United's second signing under new manager Erik ten Hag after Netherlands full-back Tyrell Malacia from Feyenoord.

Manchester United agree Lisandro Martinez deal with Ajax worth £45m

Manchester United are on the verge of completing their third summer signing after agreeing a £45m deal with Ajax for Argentina defender Lisandro Martinez.

United manager Erik ten Hag was keen to be reunited with the 24-year-old, who he signed for Ajax in 2019.

The Dutch club were reluctant to let Martinez leave but United chief executive Richard Arnold and football director John Murtough progressed the deal when they visited Amsterdam last week.

Martinez prefers to play on the left side of two central defenders and Ten Hag appeared to be planning for his arrival with his team selection against Melbourne Victory on Friday, when he moved captain Harry Maguire from his normal left-sided role to the right.

Martinez has flown to Manchester for a medical and to wrap up the remaining elements of the transfer, including getting a visa.

It is thought unlikely he will fly to Australia to play any part in United's current tour and instead will link up with his new team-mates when they return to England on 24 July.

It has been a busy few days for United's recruiting staff.

On Friday, they confirmed Christian Eriksen had signed a three-year contract while efforts continue to lure Frenkie de Jong to Old Trafford from Barcelona.

Dutch full-back Tyrell Malacia was their first summer signing at the start of the month.

Lets see how he goes, man utd havent had the best success with CB since vidic/ferdinand left - varane the only good one. With Martinez its his size which bothers me + he's not a strong defender like Fabia cannavaro was, he's not the greatest tackler either.

With the same money should have gone for Pau Torres / Presnell Kimpembe - both are currently better and have higher potential ceiling.
2 Above players have actually been linked with away moves for 40meuros and not pounds, torres to juve replacement for de ligt- kimpembe to chelsea.

Or even try and get Torino-brazilian defender Bremer - got voted best italian CB last yr - torino want 50m euros - inter offering 35m euro's with 10m add ons.

Maybe even go for wesley fofana - young but proven at Leicester City.

If Martinez doesnt go well - he wont have a resale value - most likely £20m - that be to a club like west ham

Manchester United have agreed to sign Argentina central defender Lisandro Martinez from Ajax in a deal worth up to 67m euros (£57m).

The 24-year-old is expected to sign a five-year contract with the option of a further year.

The move, for an initial £49m, is subject to a medical, personal terms being finalised and a UK visa.

The deal includes £8.5m in add-ons and £2.2m in solidarity payments to Martinez's former clubs.

He made 120 appearances for Ajax after moving from Argentinian side Defensa y Justicia for £6.3m in 2019, and also played for Newell's Old Boys.

Martinez has won seven caps for Argentina since making his senior debut in March 2019.

He is United's third summer signing after Tyrell Malacia joined from Feyenoord and Christian Eriksen moved on a free transfer.

The Old Trafford club said it was "delighted" to announce an agreement had been reached with Ajax.

"The transfer is still subject to a medical examination and the contractual agreement of both clubs with the player," said the Dutch club in a statement.

"The defender is still under contract with Ajax until 30 June, 2025. Ajax agreed a transfer fee of 57.37m euros with the English side. That amount can increase to 67.37m euros through variables."

Martinez played under new United manager Erik ten Hag at Ajax and won the Eredivisie title with the club in 2021 and 2022, as well as the Dutch Cup in 2021.

He was also Ajax's player of the year for the 2021-22 season.

Manchester United defender Raphael Varane says he has no regrets about moving to Old Trafford.

The France international, 29, joined United last summer, but a combination of injuries and his new team's form cast a shadow over his debut season.

By leaving Real Madrid, he missed the chance to win a fourth La Liga title, and a fifth Champions League success.

But he rejects the notion he made the wrong choice, telling BBC Sport: "No, absolutely not."

He added: "In football, you have to challenge yourself and try to improve. I wanted to live another experience after 10 years in the same place.

"The Premier League is absolutely fantastic and Manchester United are a great club. There was no doubt about my decision."

Manchester United have completed the signing of Argentina defender Lisandro Martinez from Ajax in a deal worth up to 67m euros (£57m).

United manager Erik ten Hag was keen to be reunited with the 24-year-old, who he signed for Ajax in 2019.

He joins the club on a five-year contract which keeps him at Old Trafford until 2027, with the option of a further year.

"It's an honour to join this great football club," Martinez said.

"I've worked so hard to get to this moment and, now that I'm here, I'm going to push myself even further."

Martinez made 120 appearances for Ajax after moving from Argentinian side Defensa y Justicia for £6.3m in 2019, and also played for Newell's Old Boys.

He has won seven caps for Argentina since making his senior debut in March 2019, and played once in the country's successful Copa America campaign in 2021.

"I've been lucky enough to be part of successful teams in my career and that's what I want to continue at Manchester United," he said.

"There will be a lot of work to get to that moment, but I firmly believe that, under this manager and coaches, and together with my new team-mates, we can do it."

Martinez played under Ten Hag at Ajax and won the Eredivisie title with the club in 2021 and 2022, as well as the Dutch Cup in 2021.

He was also Ajax's player of the year for the 2021-22 season.

"He's a warrior and I think the fans will admire him. He has an attitude, fighting spirit," Ten Hag said.

"He brings aggressiveness in the game, in a good way. I think we need that.

"But he's also skilful, he can deal with the ball and he's left-footed."

United's football director John Murtough added: "We are delighted that he has chosen to join Manchester United and we are looking forward to seeing him develop further and help the team achieve the success we are aiming for."

The centre-back is United's third signing of the summer following the arrivals of Christian Eriksen on a free transfer and Dutch full-back Tyrell Malacia.

Efforts continue to lure Frenkie de Jong to Old Trafford from Barcelona.

Is the squad better than last season?

Will they finish in the top 4?

I feel the answer is No to both questions.

The manager is probably better.

Not sure that he can drag this lot over the line into the top 4 though.

The Ronaldo situation is causing problems and Maguire is an awful incompetent captain.

It was a friendly in name only when Manchester United and Atletico Madrid faced each other in Oslo.

There were bookings, feisty challenges and a red card for Fred, with the Spanish side winning 1-0.

McTominay and Oblak came together before the end of the first half, which sparked a reaction from the Atleti players

It began with Scott McTominay showing he wasn’t going to take a step back against a notoriously no-nonsense team.

As half-time approached, the players clashed when the Man United midfielder accidentally elbowed goalkeeper Jan Oblak.

It provoked an angry reaction from Diego Simeone’s players, but it was quickly calmed down as McTominay protested his innocence.

He was later seen explaining to Oblak’s teammates his side of the story, with the referee calling him over and booking both him and the keeper, who reacted to the challenge.

The teams went in at the break goalless though among the other bookings were Fred, Thomas Lemar and Reinildo.

The breakthrough came four minutes from the end when Joao Felix settled things with the only goal of the game.

Cristiano Ronaldo was unable to mark his return to action with a goal as Manchester United ended their pre-season campaign with a 1-1 draw against Rayo Vallecano at Old Trafford.

Ronaldo's United future has been the subject of intense debate this summer.

The 37-year-old is keen to move away from the club to pursue his desire to compete in the Champions League.

And he was allowed to miss United's pre-season tour of Thailand and Australia for personal reasons.

Ronaldo made a point of applauding fans on both sides of the stadium as he led the outfield players out for their warm-up before kick-off, with the supporters reciprocating to show there is no lingering ill-feeling despite the summer speculation.

The Portuguese had one clear chance during his 45-minute appearance against the La Liga side but drove over after running on to Donny van de Beek's lay-off.

Although Ronaldo seems certain to still be a United player when his club open their Premier League campaign against Brighton on 7 August, it is doubtful whether this cameo will get him a starting slot against Graham Potter's men.

New signings Christian Eriksen and Lisandro Martinez both featured for an hour in a game set up by new manager Erik ten Hag for the players who were not involved extensively in Saturday's 1-0 defeat by Atletico Madrid in Oslo.

In Ten Hag's first game in charge at Old Trafford, Ronaldo was upstaged by 18-year-old Argentine Alejandro Garnacho.

In a goalless first-half, Garnacho carried the greatest threat, cutting in from the left-wing to cause the visitors problems.

Garnacho is one of a number of young players Ten Hag is still to decide whether to keep or allow to leave on loan.

Ivorian Amad Diallo is another after spending last season at Rangers.

And it was the 20-year-old who put the hosts in front at the start of the second half when he turned home the rebound after Alex Telles' shot had been saved.

United's lead lasted just nine minutes before Alvaro Garcia equalised in similar fashion after Tom Heaton had saved Isaac Palazon Camacho's initial effort.

Man Utd: Christian Eriksen spoke to three previous managers before joining club

Denmark midfielder Christian Eriksen says he held talks with three previous Manchester United managers about a potential move before finally joining the club this summer.

The former Ajax, Tottenham, Inter Milan and Brentford player has signed a three-year contract at Old Trafford.

Eriksen spoke to ex United bosses Louis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer but the timing was wrong.

Eriksen added that new United boss Erik ten Hag was key to him now joining.

"I've spoken to every manager who's been here at Man United to see what the situation was, but the timing wasn't there" said Eriksen, 30.

"I was at Spurs for a long time and wanted to try something abroad. I went to Inter and ended up having a lovely time.

"But then obviously something happened that changed the career path I had in mind. To be here is something I didn't think could happen a year ago."

Eriksen returned to football earlier this year after having an Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD) fitted following his cardiac arrest at last summer's Euros.

Unable to remain at Inter because of rules in Italy which prohibit anyone playing with an ICD, Eriksen spent the second half of last season with Brentford on a short-term deal.

Bees boss Thomas Frank was keen to keep Eriksen and in the end, it came down to a straight choice between them and United as Tottenham boss Antonio Conte backed away from trying to lure the midfielder back to north London, where he spent seven years after join Spurs from Ajax in 2013.

"Tottenham was only talk," Eriksen said. "They never really came with anything so it wasn't really a thing for me to go back.

"I had good conversations with Manchester United. It was very positive from the first few phone calls and it felt like the club wanted me, so it was on for a long time.

"[Ten Hag's presence] definitely helped. How he sees football and how he wants to play suits my style of play and how I developed as a player at Ajax many years ago."

After pre-season appearances against Atletico Madrid and Rayo Vallecano, Eriksen has put himself in with a chance of selection for the Premier League opener with Brighton at Old Trafford on 7 August despite missing the pre-season trip to Thailand and Australia.

The major uncertainty is where Eriksen will play.

Against Rayo Vallecano he operated behind Cristiano Ronaldo in a role usually occupied by Bruno Fernandes.

Choosing between the pair would seem like a waste of their creative abilities and Eriksen is convinced they can fit into the same team.

"I can't see any problem playing with Bruno," he said.

"I'll be happy to play wherever, I've always been like that. I try to adapt to the position I'm playing in.

"From the outside it might look like when you play as a 10 you have to stay in the middle. It's not like that anymore, luckily. But obviously, there's good and bad in every position."

<b>Cristiano Ronaldo & Harry Maguire most abused players on Twitter - report</b>

Manchester United's Cristiano Ronaldo and Harry Maguire have received the most Twitter abuse of any Premier League players, a new report has found.

Ofcom analysis of 2.3 million tweets in the first half of last season found nearly 60,000 abusive posts, affecting seven in 10 top-flight players.

Half of that abuse was directed at just 12 individuals - eight from United.

However, the study by the Alan Turing Institute also found the vast majority of fans use social media responsibly.

"These findings shed light on a dark side to the beautiful game," said Kevin Bakhurst, Ofcom's group director for broadcasting and online content.

"Online abuse has no place in sport, nor in wider society, and tackling it requires a team effort."

The report identified two peaks in the frequency of abusive tweets.

The first came on the day Ronaldo rejoined Manchester United on 27 August 2021, generating three times more tweets than any other day (188,769), of which 3,961 were abusive. At 2.3%, that is marginally lower than the daily average.

The volume of posts can largely be accounted for because of Ronaldo's 98.4m followers. On this day the Portugal forward was mentioned in 90% of all tweets aimed at Premier League footballers and 97% of abusive tweets.

The second peak came on 7 November when defender Maguire tweeted an apology following Manchester United's 2-0 home defeat by Manchester City.

nt - 10.6% of the total that day - with many users reacting to Maguire's post with insulting or demeaning language.

The report also found a duplicated tweet - using the same exact phrase - was sent to Maguire 69 times by different users within two hours.

The study says "it is possible that this duplication occurred because users saw the abusive message and decided to replicate it - indicating organic organisation rather than coordinated behaviour".

The Alan Turing Institute said that understanding the organisation of online abuse is of increasing interest given the harm caused by co-ordinated attacks and "pile-ons".

Other players were targeted by large volumes of abuse following a "trigger", despite receiving relatively few tweets overall.

Newcastle defender Ciaran Clark, now on loan at Sheffield United, was sent off against Norwich in November, with 78% of the abusive tweets he received coming on this day.

Meanwhile, Crystal Palace's James McArthur was also the subject of a spike in abuse after being yellow carded for stepping on Bukayo Saka against Arsenal in October.

Researchers will also look at whether a spike took place when an incident that saw West Ham defender Kurt Zouma kicking and slapping his cat came to light, as that took place after the data was collected.

As part of its preparation to regulate tech giants under new online safety laws, Ofcom teamed up with the Alan Turing Institute, the UK's national institute for data science and artificial intelligence, to analyse more than 2.3 million tweets directed at Premier League footballers over the first five months of the 2021-22 season.

The study created a new machine-learning technology to automatically assess whether tweets are abusive, while a team of experts also manually reviewed a random sample of 3,000 tweets.

Of that sample, 57% were positive towards players, 27% were neutral and 12.5% were critical. The remaining 3.5% were abusive.

Of the 2.3 million tweets analysed with the machine-learning tool, 2.6% contained abuse.

"These stark findings uncover the extent to which footballers are subjected to vile abuse across social media," said Dr Bertie Vidgen, lead author of the report and head of online safety at the Alan Turing Institute.

"While tackling online abuse is difficult, we can't leave it unchallenged. More must be done to stop the worst forms of content, to ensure that players can do their job without being subjected to abuse."

The UK is set to introduce new laws aimed at making online users safer, while preserving freedom of expression, with rules for sites and apps such as social media, search engines and messaging platforms.

"Social media firms needn't wait for new laws to make their sites and apps safer for users," said Ofcom's Bakhurst.

"When we become the regulator for online safety, tech companies will have to be really open about the steps they're taking to protect users. We will expect them to design their services with safety in mind.

"Supporters can also play a positive role in protecting the game they love. Our research shows the vast majority of online fans behave responsibly and, as the new season kicks off, we're asking them to report unacceptable, abusive posts whenever they see them."

Twitter says it welcomes such research to help improve conversations on its platforms, while also pointing to a number of online abuse and safety features it has implemented to stop such posts reaching individuals.

A Twitter spokesperson said: "We are committed to combating abuse and, as outlined in our Hateful Conduct Policy, we do not tolerate the abuse or harassment of people on the basis of race, ethnicity, gender, gender identity or sexual orientation.

"As acknowledged in the report, this type of research is only possible because our public API is open and accessible to all. However, our publicly-accessible API does not take into account the range of safeguards we put in place, so this does not completely reflect the user experience."

Twitter said it had not seen the data, but claimed 50% of all "violative content" is found by its own processes to help the burden on an individual to report abuse, adding "we know there is still work to be done".

European football's governing body, Uefa, last month pledged to work with social media platforms to tackle online abuse as part of a Respect campaign during the European Women's Championship.

Other projects have included BBC Sport's Hate Won't Win campaign, alongside Sky Sports, while in April 2021 football clubs, players, athletes and a number of sporting bodies undertook a four-day boycott of social media in an attempt to tackle abuse and discrimination.

<b>Manchester United have agreed a deal with Sevilla to loan defender Alex Telles for the upcoming season.</b>

Telles, 29, has been allowed to leave Old Trafford after falling down the pecking order at United.

Sevilla do not have an option or obligation to buy Telles at the end of the loan spell. The Spanish side will also cover his full salary as part of the deal.

Erik ten Hag decided to immediately strengthen his options at left-back by making Tyrell Malacia his first signing since taking over the reins at United.

Malacia, a £12million arrival from Feyenoord, will compete with Luke Shaw for a starting spot while Brandon Williams can also be deployed at left-back if he remains at the club past this summer.

United signed Telles from Porto for £15.4million in October 2020. His contract at Old Trafford runs until June 2024 with the option of a further year.

The Brazil international has played 50 times for United since moving to England.

His only goal for the club came in last season’s Champions League group stage win over Villarreal.

Telles, who has been capped six times by his country, will now join a Sevilla side which finished fourth last season.

Sevilla, who will compete in next season’s Champions League, will open the new La Liga season away at Osasuna on August 12.

Anthony Martial out of Man Utd vs Brighton, says Erik ten Hag - will Cristiano Ronaldo start in his place?

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has confirmed Anthony Martial is out of Sunday's visit of Brighton through injury, but refused to reveal if Cristiano Ronaldo will start in his place.

Martial's absence leaves United with only Ronaldo and Marcus Rashford as direct striker replacements, unless Ten Hag opts for a false nine as he experimented with in pre-season.

However, Ronaldo, who has asked to leave United, only has 45 minutes under his belt from pre-season and is behind the rest of the squad on fitness after a family issue kept him away from the summer tour.

Asked if Ronaldo will start in Martial's place, Ten Hag said: "We will see on Sunday."

Ten Hag also said he is "really happy" to have the five-time Ballon d'Or winner in his squad.

The United boss is unsure how long Martial will be unavailable for, but is confident he has the tools at his disposal to cope without the France international.

Asked about the length of Martial's injury lay-off, he added: "It's always difficult to say, I hope not too long. I think we will have solutions to sort it out."

Well, new manager but same old rubbish from the players.

Home defeat to start the season against Brighton.

Very ordinary performance once again from United.

Brighton survived a late onslaught to secure a first win at Old Trafford and condemn Erik ten Hag to a losing start (1-2) as Manchester United manager.

Pascal Gross' first-half double stunned the home supporters, who were desperate to see their team put a miserable end to last season behind them.

However, United were totally outplayed in that opening period by Graham Potter's side, who beat them 4-0 at the Amex Stadium in May on their way to a ninth-placed finish, their highest in history.

Not even the second-half introduction of Cristiano Ronaldo could deny Brighton, although United did threaten a comeback when a scramble inside the visitors box ended with Alexis Mac Allister turning the ball into his own net after goalkeeper Robert Sanchez had touched it into his path under pressure from Harry Maguire.

In nine previous league visits, Brighton had managed only one draw, so this victory was historic.

BBC

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag speaking to BBC MOTD 2: “First of all I'm disappointed that’s clear.

"We have to take the lessons. We could have been better on the ball, making too many easy mistakes. Also out of possession the organisation, [they were] goals they should not have scored.

"Brighton is a good team but I look to my team and we should have done things better and I thought it was unnecessary to give two easy goals away if we are better on the ball and make better decisions, not only with technical skills but with our choices and then we could have dominated the game.

"[In the second half] I saw a team that sticks together, who battles and also creates chances. We came back in the game but it was also about execution I think we had really good chances with [Marcus] Rashford. At least we created chances.

On the scale of the job: "I’m aware of it from before and this game does not change it. It’s a hell of a job and we have to work really hard, analyse, learn the lessons and move forward.

On Cristiano Ronaldo's fitness: "This game will help [Cristiano Ronaldo] get a better fitness level but not only Cristiano the whole team has to work. The team has to learn especially on the execution of the game plan, we could have done things better."

Manchester United have reportedly pulled out of the race to sign Marko Arnautovic

Manchester United have ended their interest in Bologna striker Marko Arnautovic.

New United boss Erik ten Hag was considering a move for the 33-year-old Austria international, whom he worked with at Dutch side FC Twente.

But is understood United pulled out because of a combination of Bologna's growing transfer fee demands and the negative reaction.

United reportedly received complaints from fans opposed to the move.

Ten Hag dismissed talk of potentially signing the former West Ham United and Stoke City forward after the 2-1 defeat by Brighton in United's Premier League opener on Saturday.

Midfielder Christian Eriksen started the game at Old Trafford in a false nine role, while Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho operated in wider positions.

Striker Anthony Martial was ruled out by a hamstring injury and Cristiano Ronaldo was not deemed fit enough to start after playing for only 45 minutes during pre-season.

Arnautovic scored 43 goals in 184 games in the Premier League between 2013 and 2019.

BBC pundit Chris Sutton said news of United's interest was "a PR disaster".

"That's madness," he said on BBC Radio 5 Live's Monday Night Club.

"I thought it was a spoof. It's ridiculous. It's a real wrong move in terms of the eyes of the supporters."

Manchester United are preparing a move for £35m-rated PSV Eindhoven winger Cody Gakpo.

United boss Erik ten Hag, who shares the same agency as Gakpo, is keen on signing the 23-year-old to boost his attack.

Lisandro Martinez and Tyrell Malacia have been signed in defence along with midfielder Christian Eriksen already this summer, but the Dutchman has been unable to strengthen his front line yet.

With Anthony Martial currently injured and concerns over Cristiano Ronaldo's future, United are looking for more options up front.

They missed out on striker Benjamin Sesko, who will join RB Leipzig next summer, and recently withdrew their interest in Bologna's Marko Arnautovic.

United have spent much of the window chasing their primary forward target Antony, but it had long emerged that Ajax plan to keep him and would expect just shy of £70m for that to change.

Gakpo, currently managed by former United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy, has emerged as a more long-term solution to the lack of quality options in the forward department.

The Netherlands international is a product of PSV's academy and scored 21 goals in 47 games last season.

PSV's stance has been if a club with strong financial resources come in, it is implausible to retain their star players.

Meanwhile, United have agreed a deal to sign Juventus midfielder Adrien Rabiot.

There is still work to do until the transfer is complete, with personal terms still needing to be negotiated with his agent and mother Veronique, but it is expected to go through.

Rashford's representatives met with French side Paris St-Germain, who have a long-term interest in the player.

But Ten Hag wants the England forward, 24, to remain at Old Trafford.

"He's really important, you have seen from the first day I'm here, I'm really happy with him, I don't want to lose him, he's definitely in our plans at Manchester United," he said.

Rashford struggled last season - failing to make an impact after missing the start of the campaign following shoulder surgery.

He scored four goals in 25 Premier League appearances and lost his place in the national squad.

But he started Sunday's Premier League opener which ended in a 2-1 defeat by Brighton.

In a turbulent week following the Brighton loss, United have withdrawn from talks with former Stoke and West Ham striker Marko Arnautovic but negotiations are at an advanced stage with Juventus' midfielder Adrien Rabiot.

Ten Hag refused to discuss individual targets but is adamant he is on the same page as the club with regard to potential signings.

And, asked by BBC Sport whether he expected to have a stronger and more rounded squad when the transfer window closes on 1 September than he has now, he said: "We have to. I am convinced we will have."

He added: "I'm happy, I think we're cooperating really well. I cannot talk about players under contract at other clubs."

Ten Hag confirmed striker Anthony Martial and defender Victor Lindelof will miss Saturday's trip to Brentford, but Cristiano Ronaldo is in contention after his substitute appearance against Brighton.

"He has had a good training week," said Ten Hag. "He has had two half games now [including pre-season]. We will see tomorrow."

PSG want him as a forward to come and strengthen the attacking line. He is the player they want, but I don't think they will let him go and I think he will be happy to stay at Man Utd.

It was interesting from PSG to move to someone like him. It is not strange because he is talented but he has been out of form for 18 months and would need to relaunch his career.

It could be partly the agent game, but PSG asked the agent to come and meet them. They met, they discussed positions and contracts, which means there was a positive response from the Rashford entourage. We also know Rashford and Kylian Mbappe are quite good friends.
