Manchester United have signed Brazil winger Antony from Ajax for an initial fee of 95m euros (£82m).

The deal, which includes a potential 5m euros (£4.3m) of add-ons, is the fourth most expensive signing in Premier League history.

The 22-year-old has signed a contract until 2027, with the option of an additional year.

"This is an incredible moment in my career to join one of the most iconic clubs in the world," said Antony.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag names the same team once more after successive wins against Liverpool and Southampton got his reign up and running.

Cristiano Ronaldo is on the bench as he stays at the club despite a summer of speculation while new £82m signing Antony is unavailable.

Youri Tielemans, another player surrounding by transfer talk, starts for Leicester City so safe to assume he isn't going anywhere either.

Manchester United owners the Glazers would sell the club for £3.75billlion, according to reports. That could open the door for a potential takeover from a Dubai sovereign wealth fund.

United supporters have continued to protest against the Glazers despite the club's upturn in form in the last two weeks. Fans marched to Old Trafford ahead of the 2-1 win over rivals Liverpool last month in an attempt to make a stand against their ownership.

In August, it emerged the Glazers would be open to selling a minority stake in United. But now it has been reported how much they would consider for the sale of the whole club.

The Mail says an offer of around £3.75bn would be enough for the American family to sell up. The report is unsure whether Britain's richest man Jim Ratcliffe, who recently failed to buy Chelsea, would be interested at that price.

But it could be of interest to a Dubai sovereign wealth fund. Abu Dhabi own Manchester City and Saudi Arabia took over Newcastle last year, but Dubai are yet to follow suit.

United fans and some ex-players have been long against the Glazers' ownership of the club. Defeats to Brighton and Brentford at the start of this season only increased the volume of the protestors, who haven't seen their club win a trophy since 2017.

The Red Devils have since won four league matches in a row, ending Arsenal's unbeaten start to the campaign in their last outing on Sunday. But supporters continue to chant about wanting the Glazers out at matches.

4 wins in a row knitted one after another United looking like a team now shame they didn't qualified for UCL

It’s taken a number of weeks and some embarrassing setbacks, but Ten Hag has now implemented a system and he has a winning set of Premier League tactics figured out.

United are going to be tough to play against this season — they are happy to invite steady possession and absorb pressure, and then they absolutely murder teams on the transition with their accurate long passing, high pace, and ruthless finishing. Opponent loses possession — ten seconds and a few kicks later — it’s in the net.

No wonder Ten Hag was so determined to hold on to Rashford when PSG came knocking, because he is a key player in this system. It’s simple, direct, and brutally effective. This could even work against the likes of City.

4 games, 2 against top sides, 2 away games with clean sheets — 4 wins.

Pains me horrendously to say it, but they’re back. Top four contenders for sure.

Casemiro could start in Man Utd Europa League opener

Casemiro could make his first Manchester United start and Cristiano Ronaldo may return when they face Real Sociedad in the Europa League.

Midfielder Casemiro has made three substitute appearances since joining from Real Madrid, while Ronaldo has made just one start this season.

But with United at Crystal Palace on Sunday, United boss Erik ten Hag is set to make changes for the Group E game.

Club captain Harry Maguire may also feature against the Spanish side.

Ten Hag was asked on Wednesday about trying to keep all his players happy.

"Maybe I cannot keep them all happy every game but everyone gets their game-time if they perform well, it's quite clear," added the Dutchman.

"But what I say, we need everyone - we have a lot of games to cover. There is a lot coming in front of us, and the national teams of course - the World Cup - but also all of the cups in England.

"The Europa League where we are now getting in and, of course, the Premier League."

United, who have won their past four games to climb to fifth in the Premier League, knocked Real Sociedad out of the Europa League at the round of 32 stage in 2020-21.

Sociedad have won two of their opening four games in La Liga and sit ninth in the table.

Manchester United's Europa League group stage campaign began with a 0-1 home defeat by Real Sociedad at Old Trafford.

The game was played after consultation with the Football Association and Uefa following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

No music was played in the stadium around the match and both sides wore black armbands and stood for a perfectly observed minute's silence as a mark of respect.

Brais Mendez scored the only goal from the penalty spot after 59 minutes following a disputed handball decision against substitute Lisandro Martinez.

In his first European game outside the Champions League since 2002, when he was a teenager at Sporting Lisbon, Cristiano Ronaldo's first-half header from Diogo Dalot's cross was disallowed for offside.

Ronaldo also headed Bruno Fernandes' cross wide at the start of the second half.

Manchester United play their second group game against Sheriff Tiraspol in Moldova on Thursday, 15 September.

Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford will miss Thursday's Group E Europa League match against Sheriff Tiraspol.

The 24-year-old, who was tipped to return to the England set-up when Gareth Southgate announces his squad on Thursday, is out with a muscle injury.

United boss Erik ten Hag did not give an exact timescale on Rashford's return but expects it to be "quite soon".

"I think this season he has had a great comeback," Ten Hag said.

"He has showed his great potential and quality."

Rashford, who made his last appearance for England in the Euro 2020 final defeat to Italy, sustained the injury in United's last Premier League match against Arsenal after scoring twice.

He was absent from their opening Europa League defeat by Real Sociedad at Old Trafford last week.

"When you lose the first game, you have to win the second, so we know what our task is," Ten Hag said.

The United boss recognised that Moldovan side Sheriff Tiraspol, who beat Real Madrid in the Champions League last season, are more than capable of causing an upset in European competition.

"It's quite clear, they beat Real Madrid and Shakhtar [Donetsk], they are capable," he said.

"We have to make it our game but we are conscious of that fact. They are a serious and decent opponent and we have to play our best for the win."

Ten Hag needs at least 2-3 years to build this team. I am happy that he has had the guts to drop rubbish like Maguire and Shaw, who are both stealing a living at the club. Ronaldo doesn't suit his system so he has done well to drop Mr Egomaniac. I like what Ten Hag is doing so far. Hopefully the clown Glazars leave soon, so Ten Hag can get properly backed in the transfer window.

Cristiano Ronaldo ended his barren spell with the first Europa League goal of his career as Manchester United earned victory at Sheriff Tiraspol.

Erik ten Hag's men suffered defeat at Old Trafford in their Group E opener against Real Sociedad but responded by claiming all three points in Moldova.

The Red Devils opened the scoring in the first half as a lovely team move was coolly finished off by Jadon Sancho from Christian Eriksen's reverse pass.

Sancho, who was left out of the England squad earlier in the day, came close to a second but his low shot was brilliantly cleared off the line by Sheriff captain Stjepan Radeljic on the stretch.

But United did double their advantage before half-time courtesy of Ronaldo's penalty, awarded after Patrick Kpozo tripped Diogo Dalot in the box.

Ronaldo could have taken his tally to 700 club goals but side-footed over from the edge of the area while at the other end, Sheriff could not force David de Gea into any meaningful saves.

In the group's other game, Real Sociedad made it two wins from two with a 2-1 victory over Neil Lennon's Omonia Nicosia.

United's revival following a poor start to the season was brought to a halt at home by Real Sociedad last week, but the side got back to winning ways with a professional job against Sheriff.

Portuguese star Ronaldo played a key part in the triumph, having requested to leave Old Trafford during the transfer window for Champions League football, but ending up staying as no club came in for his services.

The 37-year-old had not scored in his previous eight games for United, a run stretching back to the end of last season, but he showed signs of ending that goal drought when he blazed over from an angle.

He did get off the mark of the campaign by slotting in a spot-kick - which was the 699th club goal of his career - but will not get the chance add to that until 2 October against rivals Manchester City, as Sunday's scheduled Premier League against Leeds has been postponed.

Ten Hag's squad will then be tested to its limits after the international break with a gruelling period of 13 games in the space of 43 days before the season stops in November for the Qatar World Cup.

The visitors started slowly in the Moldovan capital of Chisinau, the match being played there for security reasons, but netted with their first real attack of the contest.

Winger Sancho has been in good form recently but failed to make the Three Lions squad for the forthcoming Nations League matches against Italy and Germany and his World Cup place is now in serious doubt.

But he sent manager Gareth Southgate a reminder of his capabilities by turning a defender and calmly converting his third goal of the season and should have had another but for Radeljic's last gasp interception.

United were in control of the contest but could not add to their tally in the second half, with captain Bruno Fernandes' first-time strike straight at goalkeeper Maksym Koval.

Sheriff unable to repeat past heroics

Sheriff caused one of the biggest shocks in European football history last season when they defeated eventual winners Real Madrid in the Champions League group stage.

Many of that squad have now departed, including manager Yuriy Vernydub, who left the club earlier this year to join Ukraine's territorial defence following February's invasion by Russia.

The side are six points clear at the top of the table in their domestic league but their challenge petered out after a bright start against United, with Cedric Badolo's long range effort and well struck free-kick straight at De Gea.

Iyayi Atiemwen twice came close, a strike from range bouncing just wide as well as curling a free-kick narrowly over.

Man City vs Man Utd: Erik ten Hag urges his side not to focus only on Erling Haaland in Manchester derby

Erik ten Hag believes Manchester United can beat Manchester City in Sunday's derby but insists they will not focus their entire attention on trying to stop Erling Haaland.

Haaland, who joined City from Borussia Dortmund in the summer, has scored 11 of his side's 23 goals in the Premier League this season.

The 22-year-old has easily adjusted to life in English football and will face United for the first time at the Eithad on Sunday, live on Sky Sports.

He is likely to come up against Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez, who have been key to United's recent mini-revival under Ten Hag, but the Dutchman would not be drawn on how to stop the imposing centre-forward.

"We don't play against Haaland, we play against Manchester City," Ten Hag, who was named September's manager of the month on Friday, said at his pre-match press conference.

"They have a team, more than 11 players, but also we are convinced of our capabilities and if we act as a team, in and out of possession, then you can beat such opponents.

"That is the belief we have to take with us when we line up, when we start the game and we do it over more than 90 minutes on Sunday, clear."

Man City 6-3 Man Utd: Roy Keane says Manchester United players should be 'embarrassed' after trailing 4-0 in derby

Former Manchester United skipper Roy Keane has branded the club's 6-3 derby defeat by Manchester City as "hugely embarrassing".

Hat-tricks from Erling Haaland and Phil Foden saw the reigning Premier League champions, who led 4-0 at the break, cruise to victory at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday afternoon and prompted a withering assessment from the Irishman.

Keane told Sky Sports: "Man City were magnificent. Watching Man City, it is a pleasure. Watching them live, they are one of the best teams I've ever seen.

"But Man United, [it's] a huge setback for them. We were giving them a little bit of praise over the last few weeks, but this is a huge step back.

"Four-nil down at half-time - they were 4-0 down at Brentford - and the performance in the second half, it's no good, even as consolation. They scored a few goals - the game's over.

"There's nothing for Man United to take out of this game. From the players' point of view, they really should be embarrassed. You can't go in at half-time 4-0 down in a derby game, it's hugely embarrassing.

"Haaland and Foden were brilliant, but if they're getting the service from people like De Bruyne and you're giving him time and space, you're looking for trouble, and they got punished and rightly so.

"This game is brutal. When you're not quite at it, you get hammered by your local rivals. They should be embarrassed.

"I just can't imagine going into a dressing room at a big club like Manchester United and you're 4-0 down at half-time.

"It must be bizarre - but saying that, they must be getting used to it because they did it at Brentford.

"The manager must be scratching his head with his staff and thinking, 'We've made progress over the last four games'. Huge setback."

<b>Everton 1-2 Man Utd</b>

Cristiano Ronaldo scored his 700th club goal as Manchester United came from behind at Goodison Park to end Everton's two-game winning run.

It has been a frustrating season so far for Ronaldo, who has been reduced to the role of substitute after failing to get his hoped-for summer move away from Old Trafford.

But introduced as a first-half substitute after Anthony Martial suffered another injury just three games into his comeback from the last one, Ronaldo raced on to Casemiro's through ball and beat Jordan Pickford with a low drive to the England man's near-post.

It was the 37-year-old's first goal on this ground since 2005 and was enough for United, who kept Everton at arm's length after Alex Iwobi capitalised on Casemiro's early mistake to put the hosts in front.

Antony became the first United player to score in his first three Premier League games when he levelled after being sent through by Martial.

The evening would have been more comfortable for the visitors had Marcus Rashford not had a goal disallowed for handball eight minutes from time and it took an acrobatic clearance from David de Gea to deny Amadou Onana and preserve their victory.

If Ronaldo grabbed the headlines with a return to goalscoring that was well received by the visiting supporters, it was also a mixed night for one of his former Real Madrid team-mates who has joined him at Old Trafford.

Erik ten Hag has committed £70m to buying Casemiro, on a large contract his club will still be tied to when the Brazilian is 35.

Given his price tag and experience, the midfielder's absence from last weekend's hammering at Manchester City was a surprise. Under the circumstances, handing him his first league start was a fairly straightforward decision for Ten Hag.

Yet, even at 30, with so many honours to his name, Casemiro evidently still has some learning to do. In Spain, he might have got a free-kick when he was barged off the ball by Onana, leading to Everton's opener. Tonight, referee David Coote waved the game on.

Casemiro didn't let the setback affect him.

He should have scored when he ran unmarked on to Rashford's cross, slapping the turf in frustration as his header bounced wide. But he made amends with the through ball that sent Ronaldo running towards the Everton goal for his landmark effort.

Casemiro continued to contribute in an unfussy way, taking the ball in tight spaces and laying off close-range passes.

However, he was hustled out of possession more often than Ten Hag would have liked and by the end, the United boss had introduced Scott McTominay and Raphael Varane for additional defensive solidity to see the game out.

<b>Manchester United: Sir Jim Ratcliffe told by Glazers club not for sale</b>

Britain's richest man Sir Jim Ratcliffe says the Glazer family told him they do not want to sell Manchester United - but he is still interested in buying a Premier League club.

Ratcliffe, 69, was unsuccessful in his bid to buy Chelsea in May.

The billionaire, whose Ineos group owns Nice in France and Swiss club Lausanne, met brothers Joel and Avram Glazer.

"It is owned by the six children of the father and they don't want to sell," Ratcliffe said.

He told told a Financial Times Live conference: "I met Joel and Avram and they are the nicest people. They are proper gentlemen.

"If it had been for sale in the summer, yes, we would probably have had a go following on from the Chelsea thing.

"But we can't sit around hoping that one day Manchester United will become available."

United have been owned by the Glazer family since 2005.

Their Premier League home game against Liverpool in May last year was postponed because of an organised protest by United fans against the owners.

Thousands of supporters marched to Old Trafford in protest before the same fixture this season, in August.

Lancashire-born Ratcliffe, the majority shareholder of chemical group Ineos, made a late bid for Chelsea worth £4.25bn but lost out to a consortium led by American investor Todd Boehly.

In a BBC Sport interview following that offer, Ratcliffe said he is originally a United fan has "split loyalties" between the two clubs.

On still being in the market for a Premier League club, he said: "The most popular sport in the world is football and it is the sport closest to us.

"So we should have an asset. Not a Premiership (club), I think a premier club."

Manchester United will be without forward Anthony Martial for the Europa League game against Omonia Nicosia.

Martial, who has missed seven of United's 11 matches this season, went off injured after 29 minutes of the 2-1 victory against Everton on Sunday, after setting up United's equaliser.

Defenders Harry Maguire and Aaron Wan-Bissaka, and midfielder Donny van de Beek will also miss Thursday's match.

Erik ten Hag's side are second in Group E, behind Spanish team Real Sociedad.

United had to come from behind to beat Omonia Nicosia in Cyprus last week as they trailed 1-0 at half-time before winning 3-2, thanks to two goals from Marcus Rashford and one from Martial.

During his news conference on Wednesday, Ten Hag, speaking about the Frenchman, said: "It's disappointing for him and disappointing for the team as well.

"On Sunday the assist for Antony, the pressing was good, he was an important factor and played well.

"Of course I want every player to be available, sometimes it's disappointing when they're not available, especially with all the games coming up.

"When they're not available you have to deal with the situation and focus on the players available."

Manchester United footballer Mason Greenwood has been arrested for allegedly breaching bail conditions.

The 21-year-old striker was arrested on suspicion of rape and assault in January. He was also questioned about claims of making threats to kill.

Greenwood, who has made one appearance for England, has not been charged and his bail was extended in June.

The BBC understands the latest arrest was made at his home in Bowdon, Greater Manchester.

In a statement, a representative for Greater Manchester Police said they were "aware of an allegation regarding a 21-year-old man breaching his bail conditions and an arrest has been made on Saturday".

They added that "enquiries are ongoing at this time".

Within hours of the online allegations in January, Greenwood was suspended from playing or training with his club until further notice.

Nike ended its sponsorship deal with him and Electronic Arts removed him from active squads on its Fifa 22 game.

Manchester United footballer Mason Greenwood has been charged with attempted rape, engaging in controlling behaviour and assault.

Prosecutors said the charges all related to the same complainant.

The 21-year-old footballer, who has also played for England, is due to appear at Manchester and Salford Magistrates' Court on Monday.

He was arrested in January after allegations were made.

Marcus Rashford sent an injury-time header wide as Manchester United were held by Newcastle United and slipped three points off a top-four place.

With virtually the last touch of a disappointing game, Casemiro floated a cross to the far post. Substitute Rashford climbed highest but his effort went wide of the far post.

A goal at that point would have been harsh on Newcastle, who came close to securing only their second victory at Old Trafford since 1972 but after Joelinton's first-half header had hit the bar, the Brazilian failed to head the rebound into an empty net.

The hosts' frustrations were summed up by Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Portuguese striker, who had two second-half efforts disallowed, shook his head in irritation when he was replaced by Rashford 18 minutes from time.

He carried on chuntering to himself and shaking his head until he reached the dug-out, when he slumped down in simmering discontent.

Erik ten Hag calls on players to 'kill' opponents after Newcastle draw

Erik ten Hag says a failure to take chances meant his Manchester United "didn't kill" opponents Newcastle United at Old Trafford.

The Dutch manager saw his side waste two great late chances in a 0-0 draw.

Fred turned a Marcus Rashford cross wide after then England striker had taken the ball round Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope.

Then, with virtually the final touch, Rashford headed Casemiro's cross across goal despite being unmarked.

"We broke them but we didn't kill them," said Ten Hag.

"Newcastle are one of the most physical teams in the league. They all had cramp and we didn't because we were good on the ball and let them run.

"We had the chances, 15 attempts. But our strikers will score a lot. I'm confident about that."

The United boss added: "We score in almost every game. Today we didn't but in the other games we score. It's clear it's about taking responsibility, I am convinced our strikers will take responsibility, but also other players, midfielders, and defenders can also score goals."

The result may have only been 2-0 but it could have been a cricket score. Man U were unstoppable last night, against a solid side with a good defence. They have the spine of a consistent new team emerging and have hired a very competent head coach. Casemiro's looping stoppage-time header gave Manchester United a deserved point in a dramatic finale against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. (1-1)

Jorginho's late penalty looked to have given Chelsea a narrow win when he sent goalkeeper David de Gea the wrong way from the spot after substitutes Scott McTominay and Armando Broja tangled at a corner three minutes from time.

Defeat would have been harsh on United but they got the reward their performance merited when Casemiro rose to meet Luke Shaw's cross deep into six minutes of stoppage time, Chelsea keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga getting a fingertip touch but unable to stop the ball crossing the line as it bounced back off the inside of the post.

United, with Cristiano Ronaldo left out of the squad as a disciplinary measure following his refusal to come on as a substitute in the win against Tottenham, had the better chances as they dominated the first half.

Erik ten Hag's side were well on top and far more dangerous, Kepa saving well from Marcus Rashford and Antony, the latter also missing a great chance when clean through.

The second half was closer and concluded with that frantic finish, but the main worry for United now is an injury to defender Raphael Varane, who left the pitch in tears as he clearly fears for his World Cup chances with France.

France defender Raphael Varane left the pitch in tears during Manchester United's 1-1 draw at Chelsea after suffering a knee injury less than a month before the World Cup in Qatar.

Varane, 29, fell awkwardly while trying to challenge Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and was replaced by Victor Lindelof.

United boss Erik ten Hag said it was too soon to know how bad the injury is.

"We have to wait 24 hours and then we will know what [the injury] is." the Dutchman told BBC Sport.

"I can understand (his reaction), we can all probably understand he will be emotional but he also has to wait, you don't know.

"He's experienced but the medics have to do their job, have to make an assessment, set the right diagnosis and from there on come to the conclusion."

Varane, whose career in England has been hampered by injuries since signing from Real Madrid in the 2021 summer transfer window, refused to leave the pitch on a stretcher but walked round the perimeter with his face in his shirt and then buried in his hands.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag confirmed that France centre-back Raphael Varane will be out of action until the World Cup.

Manchester United: Erik Ten Hag not afraid to 'correct' showboating Antony

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag says he will "correct" Antony if he feels the Brazil winger is unnecessarily showboating.

Antony, United's £85m summer signing, entertained the home fans during Thursday's 3-0 Europa League Group E win over Sheriff Tiraspol by producing a 720-degree spin with the ball stuck to his left foot.

His next move was to knock it straight out for a Sheriff goal-kick.

Ten Hag denied it was the reason he substituted Antony at half-time.

"I don't have a problem with tricks as long as it's functional," said Ten Hag, who also managed Antony at Ajax.

"I demand more from him - more runs behind, more often in the box and more playing in the pocket.

"When there is a trick like that, it's nice as long as it's functional. If you're not losing the ball, then it's OK - but if it's a trick because of a trick, then I will correct him."

Antony has started all of United's eight matches so far in a busy October, playing the full 90 minutes of last Saturday's 1-1 Premier League draw at Chelsea, but was replaced with Marcus Rashford at half-time during the 3-0 win against Moldovan champions Sheriff.

Asked if that substitution was a reaction to Antony's showboating, Ten Hag said: "No. It was more or less planned if we were up.

"I wanted to see Marcus Rashford and Cristiano Ronaldo close together and the dynamic on the right side."

Teenager Alejandro Garnacho scored an outstanding goal as Manchester United ended Real Sociedad's flawless Europa League record, but had to settle for second place in Group E.

Erik ten Hag's side needed to win by two goals or more in Spain to finish top of the group, and their spirits were lifted when Garnacho showed terrific pace before firing Cristiano Ronaldo's pass into the corner of the net.

It was a wonderful moment for the 18-year-old Madrid-born winger, who was making his second start for the Red Devils.

Ronaldo missed a great chance to double the lead with a lob on to the roof of the net, before David de Gea produced a fine double save to keep out Andoni Gorosabel and Pablo Marin.

United finish the group stage level on 15 points with Sociedad, who advance to the last 16 with a superior goal difference.

The Red Devils will now play in February's knockout-round play-offs, where they will face one of the clubs dropping down from the Champions League.

Teams they could meet over two legs include Barcelona, Ronaldo's former club Juventus, Ajax, who Ten Hag managed for five years, and Ukraine's Shakhtar Donetsk.

Bayer Leverkusen, Sporting Lisbon, Red Bull Salzburg and Sevilla are also in Monday's draw for the knockout round.

Manchester United owners to explore sale as Glazers seek new investment

Manchester United Football Club could finally be sold by its American owners after a 17-year reign dominated by fan protests and declining on-pitch performance.

Sky News can exclusively reveal that the Glazer family is preparing to formally announce its intention to examine potential sources of outside investment that could include a full-blown auction of arguably the world's most famous football club.

Sources said on Tuesday that investment bankers were being instructed by Manchester United's owners to advise on the process, which is likely to include a full or partial sale, or strategic partnership with third parties.

A statement confirming their intentions could come imminently, one of them said.

The announcement of a review of financial options that could include a sale process would signal an end to years of speculation over whether the Glazers might be persuaded to offload a club which for the past decade has experienced an almost-unmitigated footballing decline.

The Old Trafford side has not won the Premier League title since 2013, and has sacked a succession of managers in the aftermath of the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson.

More recently, the club has become embroiled in a bitter legal fight with Cristiano Ronaldo, its best-known player, over an interview in which he questioned United's ambition and lambasted the Glazers' approach to owning it.

On Tuesday, United announced that Mr Ronaldo had left "with immediate effect".

It remains possible that the family, which took control of United in 2005 in a £790m deal largely funded by debt, opt not to sell.

A partial sale to new investors, with capital being raised to fund an overdue redevelopment of Old Trafford, is one potential outcome from the process.

The Glazers have acknowledged the need for new infrastructure investment to transform the stadium into a genuinely world-class venue, while substantial funds are also required to enable the men's team to compete once more at the top of the European game.

If United was sold outright, it would be the latest top-flight club to change hands, after Roman Abramovich agreed a £2.5bn sale of Chelsea to a consortium led by the American businessman Todd Boehly earlier this year.

United's valuation in a sale would inevitably exceed the roughly $2.15bn market capitalisation implied by its share price during Tuesday's trading session on the New York Stock Exchange.

Reports in recent months have speculated that any transaction would need to value the club at anywhere between £5bn and £9bn to persuade the owners to sell.

The Glazers listed a minority stake in the company in 2012 but retained overwhelming control through a dual-class share structure which means they hold almost all voting rights.

For more than 18 months, the club has been promising to introduce a modestly sized supporter ownership scheme that would give fans shares with the same structure of voting rights as the Glazers.

The initiative has, however, yet to be launched despite a pledge to have it operational by the start of the 2021-22 season.

It was one of a number of commitments made by Joel Glazer, United's co-chairman, in the wake of the European Super League (ESL) debacle, in which the club played a pivotal role.

Manchester United was one of six Premier League teams to agree to join the project, which collapsed within hours of its official launch amid public and political acrimony.

In May 2021, Red Devils fans forced the postponement of a home match against rivals Liverpool after protesting against the ESL and the Glazer family.

"Love United, Hate Glazers" has become a familiar refrain during their tenure, with supporters critical of a perceived lack of investment in the club's infrastructure while the owners have extracted hundreds of millions of pounds-worth of dividends as a result of its continued commercial success.

If a formal sale process is initiated, attention will turn to the identities of potential buyers.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe, the Ineos billionaire who has supported United since childhood, said in August that he was keen to buy the club but has since suggested that English football's elite names are overvalued.

Billionaires from around the world will be linked to bids, as will sovereign investors seeking to emulate the kinds of takeovers seen at Newcastle United - now owned by Saudi state-backed investors - and Paris St Germain, which is Qatari-owned.

There will also be speculation that the Red Knights, a consortium led by former United director and leading economist Lord O'Neill, could revive an attempt initiated in 2010 to take control of the club.

Significantly, the prospective auction of Manchester United comes as Fenway Sports Group, the owner of Liverpool, also weighs selling all or part of the Anfield club.

Simultaneous sale processes for two of English football's so-called 'big six' - the others being Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur - would be unprecedented.

One analyst said the timing suggested that some investors believed the value of top clubs could be approaching its peak, especially against a backdrop of tough global economic forecasts for the coming years.

United's announcement is also likely to be made during a World Cup fuelled by Gulf petrodollars, underlining the shifting financing of the global football industry.

Manchester United declined to comment on Tuesday.

Manchester United: How 'scavenger' Glazers bought club - and left Old Trafford 'rusting' and in a 'mess

It's nearly 20 years since the American tycoon Malcolm Glazer bought his first stake in Manchester United - now his family's controversial tenure at the club could finally be coming to an end.

Chants of "Love United, hate Glazers" are regularly heard at Old Trafford and news that the owners are exploring a sale will delight many United supporters.

Here, Sky News tells the story of the Glazers' ownership of the Premier League club and explains why the family have been so unpopular with fans - even attracting criticism from one of their own star players, Cristiano Ronaldo, who left the club with immediate effect earlier today.

Glazers buy Man Utd - and saddle club with debt

Malcolm Glazer owned the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, an American football team that were then the Super Bowl champions, when he began his investment in United in March 2003.

At the time, United had dominated the Premier League and were one of the most successful clubs in the world, winning an array of silverware under Sir Alex Ferguson.

Glazer took full control of United in June 2005, but the deal was hugely unpopular with fans because it was financed primarily through loans secured against the club's assets.

Within a year of the leveraged buyout, Glazer had two strokes and his six children - Avram, Joel, Bryan, Kevin, Darcie and Edward - ran United, all of them sitting on the board of directors.

The Glazers' £790m takeover loaded United with debt that is now around £500m. The club were debt-free before the takeover.

Fans have been enraged by the more than £1bn it has cost the Glazers to service the debt, while cashing in themselves by receiving dividends from the club.

Fan protests and FC United formed

The Glazer family's first visit to Old Trafford ended in ugly and violent scenes in June 2005 as police clashed with supporters who had effectively barricaded United's new owners inside the stadium.

Joel, Avram and Bryan Glazer reportedly had to be smuggled down the players' tunnel and out of the ground in two police tactical aid vans for their own safety.

The Glazers' controversial takeover prompted a group of disaffected Man United supporters to form a new football club.

FC United began their first season in 2005-06 and now compete in the Northern Premier League Premier Division, the seventh tier of the English football league system.

Success on the pitch

Under the continued management of Sir Alex, United initially remained successful under the Glazers' ownership, winning five Premier League titles in seven seasons between 2007 and 2013.

With star players Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney, United enjoyed a prolific three-year spell from 2007 to 2009, winning three Premier League titles, a Champions League trophy and the League Cup.

But fans' anger at the Glazers remained.

Green and gold scarf campaign

In 2010, United fans began donning yellow and green scarves to protest against the Glazers' ownership.

United are known for their famous red shirts, but the club was originally founded, in 1878, under the name Newton Heath Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Football Club, which played in a bold yellow and green strip.

At the height of the protests, former United player David Beckham put on a green and gold scarf that was thrown on to the pitch during his return to Old Trafford with AC Milan in 2010.

That night, Joel and Avram Glazer were inside the stadium but Beckham later distanced himself from the protest, saying the ownership of United was "not my business".

Red Knights takeover bid

A group of wealthy supporters were expected to make a bid of about £1bn for United in 2010, despite United insisting the Glazer family owners would "not entertain any offers".

The Red Knights group, which included former Football League chairman Keith Harris and Goldman Sachs chief economist Jim O'Neil, said that one of its priorities was to reduce debt levels at the club.

The proposed bid was put on hold after the group said media speculation of "inflated valuation aspirations" had hampered its plans.

Post-Ferguson problems

Since Sir Alex called time on his illustrious managerial career nearly 10 years ago, United's form has gone downhill.

Despite appointing high-profile managers such as Jose Mourinho and Louis van Gaal, the club has failed to win the Premier League since 2013 - while spending more than £1bn on players in that time.

United have also not won a trophy since their Europa League triumph in 2017.

To make matters worse, arch rivals Manchester City and Liverpool have enjoyed huge success as they regularly compete for Premier League and Champions League titles.

Malcolm Glazer death

Malcolm Glazer died in 2014 at the age of 85, having never visited Old Trafford during his ownership of the club.

Although he was a controversial figure in Manchester, tributes poured in from the US, where the businessman was hugely respected for turning Tampa Bay from a laughing stock into a Super Bowl-winning franchise.

After Glazer's death, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said: "Malcolm Glazer was the guiding force behind the building of a Super Bowl-champion organisation.

Saudi Arabia's sports minister says its government would "definitely support" private sector Saudi bids for Manchester United and Liverpool.

The owners of both Premier League clubs are exploring potential sales.

Newcastle United already has Saudi Arabian owners after a takeover backed by the Saudi Public Investment Fund was completed in October 2021.

Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Faisal said there was a lot of "interest and appetite" in United and Liverpool.

He told BBC Sport: "From the private sector, I can't speak on their behalf, but there is a lot of interest and appetite and there's a lot of passion about football.

"It's the most-watched league in Saudi and the region and you have a lot of fans of the Premier League.

"We will definitely support it if any [Saudi] private sector comes in, because we know that's going to reflect positively on sports within the kingdom.

"But if there's an investor willing to do so and the numbers add up, why not?"

Little more than 12 months since their takeover, Newcastle are third in the Premier League table and unbeaten in all competitions since 31 August.

The Magpies have spent more than £200m on players since the takeover, breaking their transfer record to sign Swedish striker Alexander Isak in the summer.

"They've done an excellent job," added Prince Abdulaziz.

"They still have a long way to go - they've brought the right people on board.

"I'm sure they have targets to win the league and the Champions League and so on because they strive for the best and always bring the best on board, so I think it's going to be a bright future for Newcastle."

Ronaldo to Saudi Arabia?

Prince Abdulaziz also said he would "love" to see Cristiano Ronaldo join a Saudi club following his departure from Manchester United.

The Portugal forward left the Old Trafford club with immediate effect on Tuesday following a controversial interview in which the 37-year-old criticised United and said he had "no respect" for manager Erik ten Hag.

In the interview with TalkTV, Ronaldo also said he turned down a £305m deal to join a Saudi Arabian club in the summer - a move that would have seen him become the highest-paid footballer in the world.

Spanish newspaper Marca reported that Al-Hilal had offered him a two-year deal.

"Anything is possible, I would love to see Ronaldo play in the Saudi league," said Prince Abdulaziz.

"It would benefit the league, the sports eco-system in Saudi and it will inspire the youth for the future. He's a role model to a lot of kids and has a big fanbase in Saudi."

Ronaldo is currently playing at what is likely to be his last World Cup, a tournament Prince Abdulaziz would be keen to bring to Saudi Arabia.

The state is in the running to host the women's and men's Asian Cup in 2026 and 2027 respectively and, if the bids are successful, he believes it will "for sure" increase the chance of Saudi bidding for the World Cup.

"Why not? Who wouldn't want to host the World Cup?" he added. "We host a lot of events in the region.

"Any country in the world would love to host the World Cup. It's an amazing tournament and it's good for every country to host such an event.

"We need to uplift some of our venues. We have a lot of stadiums that meet the requirement that we need, but hosting such an event is not just about the stadiums, it's about the infrastructure, the people, about preparing everyone to such an event

"And making sure that when you're ready to host this competition the whole nation is behind that."

'We will always be criticised'

Through its hosting of major sporting events, including Formula 1 races, world title boxing fights and golf tournaments, Saudi Arabia has been accused of sportswashing - the act of using sport to improve reputation and project a positive image of a country.

Like current World Cup hosts Qatar, campaigners say sport is being used as a soft power by the Saudi government to hide long-standing issues, including women's rights abuses, the treatment of the LGBTQ+ community and the restriction of free speech.

"We were criticised in Saudi before we hosted such events, that we don't host these events, and now that we are now, we're criticised for hosting them," said Prince Abdulaziz.

"We look at the facts - the numbers don't lie - when you look at participation in boxing, from six gyms in 2018 to 57 gyms today. A 300% participation increase, 60% are women, which was a shock for us.

"When you see appetite from the youth, men and women, they learned from it. So, at the end of the day if it's making the country better and fixing a lot of the social issues we have in terms of participation then that's a benefit for us and that's what we look at.

"I think we will always be criticised but we have to look at what's best for our country and our people, and what is actually developing our youth towards the future."

The owners of Manchester United have "taken the money" out of the club rather than investing in Old Trafford, a former director has told Sky News.

In a wide-ranging interview with Sophy Ridge on Sunday, Greg Dyke also said all United fans will be "pleased to see the back" of the Glazers who are considering selling the Premier League outfit.

The billionaire US family has not spent enough money on the club, according to Mr Dyke, echoing the comments of recently departed star player Cristiano Ronaldo, who had hit out at the lack of investment in the Carrington training ground.

Mr Dyke, a former United director, told Ridge: "There is no doubt the money has not been invested. Old Trafford used to be a ground ahead of its time, it's no longer like that.

"The training ground is no longer like that, the world catches up and you have to spend capital and they haven't spent it, they've taken the money out."

<b>Man United consider Christian Pulisic loan in January to replace Cristiano Ronaldo - sources</b>

Manchester United are open to a loan move for Christian Pulisic, sources have told ESPN, with the United States forward expected to be allowed to leave Chelsea in the January transfer window.

United, Newcastle and Arsenal have all been made aware of Pulisic's likely availability when the transfer window opens, and sources told ESPN the player's representatives are keen to find him a new club four years after he signed for Chelsea in a £58 million transfer from Borussia Dortmund.

Sources have told ESPN that United are not planning to make substantial moves in January, although the club's decision to cancel Cristiano Ronaldo's contract has left manager Erik ten Hag needing a proven forward to replace the former Real Madrid and Juventus player.

Sources have said Pulisic's versatility across the front line has made him an appealing option to United, whose other attacking options have been hampered by injury or inconsistency this season.

Pulisic, 24, has played every minute of the USMNT's World Cup campaign in Qatar so far. Gregg Berhalter's team heads into Tuesday's Group B game against Iran knowing that a win will secure qualification for a round-of-16 clash against either the Netherlands, Senegal or Ecuador.

The forward has endured sporadic appearances for Chelsea this season, starting just three Premier League games. His only 90-minute outing for Chelsea came in their Carabao Cup defeat against Manchester City earlier this month.

United have had an interest in Pulisic in the past; Chelsea had to move quickly in 2019 to beat off competition from United and Liverpool to sign him.

ESPN reported that United also enquired about his availability for a loan move in August, but a deal failed to materialise.

Sources told ESPN that Pulisic's injury problems at Chelsea have been noted by United, but he remains a player of interest in January because of the lack of proven options expected to be available on loan.

Manchester United: Manager Erik ten Hag says a club sale would be good

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag believes the sale of the club would be a "good thing" as he looks to compete with cash-rich Manchester City and Newcastle.

Last month, United's owners the Glazer family announced they were considering selling the club as they "explore strategic alternatives".

The Americans bought the club for £790m ($1.34bn) in 2005.

"There will be more investment possible which is good," said Ten Hag.

The Dutchman says when he was informed of the plan by chief executive Richard Arnold, he was reassured by what it meant.

"We spoke about the culture we want, we spoke about objectives, goals and the culture and he confirmed it won't change," he said.

"It will be even better because more money will become available for this project."

Ten Hag says he has not spoken to the Glazer family about the situation, although BBC Sport understands nothing substantive is likely to happen until the festive period is over.

Demonstrations against the owners have become commonplace over the past few months, with complaints growing about the financial state of United.

In their first quarter results revealed last week, the Glazers took the unprecedented step of not paying themselves a dividend. However, it was also revealed the club now owe more than £300m in unpaid transfer fees on various recent deals.

Ten Hag is more single minded about the situation - he wants the funds to compete with the Premier League's other leading clubs.

"There's a change in circumstances when you compare [the Premier League] with five or 10 years ago," he said. "The competition is much tougher.

"Newcastle are coming, even West Ham, maybe not now in the table but they have huge investment. Spurs definitely and I don't need to talk about City and Liverpool or Chelsea. You can quickly count seven or eight clubs that can compete in this league.

"It's also about strategy not just money. But it's clear that when you don't have the right players and quality players you will not be successful and achieve the targets you set."

Manchester United: Frenkie de Jong still a target for Erik ten Hag

Manchester United have not abandoned all hope of signing Frenkie de Jong despite their failed pursuit of the Dutch midfielder in the summer.

United boss Erik ten Hag made the Barcelona player his top transfer target on his arrival from Ajax.

De Jong, 25, whose contract at the Nou Camp was complicated by the club's financial restructuring, never gave any indication he was willing to leave.

But it is understood Ten Hag wants to revisit the situation in the summer.

After missing out on De Jong, United instead bolstered their midfield by signing Brazilian Casemiro from Real Madrid for £70m and Christian Eriksen, who has proved to be an astute free transfer arrival from Brentford.

Yet even with last summer's influx of new arrivals, Ten Hag feels De Jong would fit perfectly into his squad.

Next summer is also when England's Jude Bellingham will need to decide his future.

Bellingham famously went on a tour of United's Carrington training ground in 2020, where he met Sir Alex Ferguson. Some United staff were convinced they would secure the services of the then Birmingham youngster but he eventually signed for Borussia Dortmund.

Given the opportunity, United feel they could still make a compelling case for why Bellingham should join them, although with every major club in the world interested in a player who was outstanding in England's run to the World Cup quarter-finals they accept they are not the favourites in a competitive field.

After Cristiano Ronaldo's exit, getting a new striker remains a priority for Ten Hag.

PSV Eindhoven's Cody Gakpo is on United's radar but given the club's ownership situation, making any significant signings next month has to be open to question.

Man Utd trigger contract extensions for Diogo Dalot, Luke Shaw, Marcus Rashford & Fred

Manchester United have triggered one-year contract extensions for a quartet of first-team stars, including England's Marcus Rashford.

Negotiations continue with goalkeeper David de Gea, whose deal is due to expire at the end of the season.

Last week, manager Erik ten Hag said United would be triggering options for Rashford, England's Luke Shaw, Portugal defender Diogo Dalot and Brazil's Fred.

All four players would have been free to leave Old Trafford in June.

However, De Gea's case is different.

If United triggered an extension, it would be on the £375,000-a-week salary the club committed to when they last extended De Gea's contract in 2019, when he became the highest-paid goalkeeper in the world.

The option for a shorter contract on reduced terms for the 32-year-old Spaniard has been raised.

Without an agreement by 1 January, De Gea, who earlier this season became the 11th player to make 500 appearances for United, will be able to agree pre-contract terms with an overseas club.

Manchester United’s January transfers: Gakpo is top option to replace Ronaldo

Manchester United do not typically make signings in the winter window, feeling that clubs are reluctant to let go of genuine talent midway through a season. This time, though, there is a pressure to replace Cristiano Ronaldo.

Manager Erik ten Hag told reporters at United’s Spain training camp during the World Cup break that he wants to add to his attack: “We do everything in our power. We are doing research on every opportunity and we do everything we can if that opportunity is there to contract them.”

Manchester United: Erik ten Hag confirms search for striker after Cristiano Ronaldo exit

Erik ten Hag says Manchester United must replace Cristiano Ronaldo with another striker, be that in the transfer market or promoting within.

Ronaldo's acrimonious departure from Old Trafford was confirmed on November 22, leaving Ten Hag with a depleted attacking force with which to tackle the remainder of United's campaign.

In the form of Alejandro Garnacho, Anthony Elanga and Facuno Pellistri, Ten Hag believes United possess players capable of filling the void left by five-time Ballon d'Or winner Ronaldo, but revealed he would be prepared to enter the transfer market, providing the right target became available.

"Two things," Ten Hag said. "Impulse can come out of our own club, see Garnacho, see Elanga, see Pellistri, who made a good impression at the World Cup and also in training. That is first.

"Second, yes, we are aware we lost a striker, so I think we have to get a striker in, but it has to be the right one.

"The right one is a player that brings quality to the team, not just adding to the squad because that only gives you problems. And, you know the criteria is high here at Manchester United."
