Ten Hag: We are looking for a striker

Erik Ten Hag has confirmed Manchester United are in the market for a striker this January window.

Ten Hag speaking after his side beat Nottingham Forest 3-0, said: "We are looking for offensive players. We are looking for a striker.

"We are always in the market, but it has to match the sporting criteria but also the financial criteria. We do what we can to bring in the players we need."

SKY

Really good performance, but Forest are awful. But we did well, and can only beat who is front of us.

Still, I am concerned about our inability to score more goals. Man City would have scored 6 goals against Forest, but we just lack that outright number 9, like Haaland. Rashford and Martial are more left sided wingers than strikers.

I hear Man Utd are very upset at losing Cody Gakpo to Liverpool:usman

I was quite upset about it, but if we don't sign anyone in January and Glazers are gone soon, I will take that.

At some £200 million Man Utd overspent last summer. It is gonna be a long and hard process to sell the club. It will be the same with Liverpool if it is for sale at all.

Man U looked very good in that game last night, against an admittedly pathetic Forest. It should have been 7 or 8 nil to Man U really.

Marcus Rashford turned from villain to hero as he came off the bench to score the only goal against Wolves and move Manchester United into the Premier League top four.

Manager Erik ten Hag left Rashford out of his starting line-up for "internal disciplinary" reasons.

But after a disappointing opening period, in which Rashford's replacement Alejandro Garnacho wasted the visitors' best chance when his shot was saved by Jose Sa, the England man scored 14 minutes from time.

Rashford picked the ball up outside the Wolves area, then, after exchanging passes with Bruno Fernandes, held off three defenders before driving home his 11th goal of the season in all competitions.

It was the first time he had scored in three successive games for United since December 2019.

I wasn't sure about ten Hag at first but he's slowly showing what a good manager he his.

He stood up to the nonsense of Ronaldo, now he's shown Rashford that he won't take any nonsense from him either.

The team is looking more solid and playing some decent football.

Speaking after the 1-0 win, Shaw was asked about Ten Hag's authoritative approach following the decision to drop their in-form striker.

"People can't do whatever they want, maybe that has been the problem in the past - people getting away with silly little things," Shaw told BT Sport.

"At a top club like this it has to be like that, there has to be discipline. The manager takes all of that into consideration. People have got away with silly things before. Like you've seen today, if you don't do the little things right then you won't play."

Ten Hag will be hoping that Rashford has learned his lesson from any mistakes he made and Shaw has praised the forward after another match-winning display.

He added: "When you have someone like Marcus Rashford coming on, you know a goal is coming.

"He is in a really good way at the moment, really positive and really happy. He is world class and can be one of the best in the world if he keeps going."

United might be top four this season.

ETH is a quality coach and has made them annoyingly good.

Some of the away wins this season that he has eked out have been like old era United, solid 1-0s or 2-1s and doing enough to get the result.

3-0 up against Bournemouth.

What a run they are on.

Rashford with another goal too.

Good performance and win. Ten Hag has made us so good defensively. Yet another clean sheet.

Man-U quietly building something

I see us get mentioned for title race yet Man-U haven't been spoken of yet they are in a better position than us

They could by next weekend be sitting in 2nd place, would not rule them out of a title race just yet

Erik ten Hag was happy with Manchester United’s 3-0 win over Bournemouth but claimed it was not the best game from his team and suggested they were lucky.

Manchester United are in talks with Crystal Palace goalkeeper Jack Butland about a move to Old Trafford.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag needs a number two to David de Gea after Newcastle United cut Martin Dubravka's loan period short.

Butland has been with Crystal Palace since 2020 but has only made 10 Premier League appearances for the club and has yet to play this season.

The 29-year-old's contract at Selhurst Park expires in the summer.

Butland has nine England caps and was in Gareth Southgate's squad at the 2018 World Cup.

However, he has not been a Premier League regular since Stoke City were relegated in 2018.

David de Gea confirms talks with Man United over new contract: "I'm relaxed, for sure it's going to end in a good way"

"I hope to finish my career at Man United. I was saying this is my club, it's a huge honour to be here and I'm so happy here".

Manchester United are prepared to offer 4m euros (£3.5m) to take Atletico Madrid striker Joao Felix on loan for the rest of the season but the Spanish club want 12-13m euros (£10.6m-£11.4m) for the 23-year-old Portugal international. (Relevo)

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag says he will be patient reintroducing Jadon Sancho to his team as "footballers are not robots".

Manchester United have signed Crystal Palace goalkeeper Jack Butland on loan for the remainder of the season.

United manager Erik ten Hag needs a number two to David de Gea after Newcastle United cut Martin Dubravka's loan period short.

Butland, who has nine England caps, has been with Crystal Palace since 2020 but is yet to play this season.

"This is an amazing club and one that I am now proud to represent," said Butland, 29.

Tom Heaton, who has three England caps and joined from Aston Villa in 2021, is also part of the goalkeeping set-up at Old Trafford.

Butland added: "I've played against David de Gea and represented England alongside Tom Heaton; they are top-class keepers, and I am relishing the opportunity to compete alongside and support them as team-mates.

"There is a lot that this group can achieve this season and I'm excited to play my part in helping everyone to reach these ambitions."

United are fourth in the Premier League with Palace 12th.

Butland, who was played 87 games in the Premier League, was in Gareth Southgate's squad at the 2018 World Cup.

However, he has not been a Premier League regular since Stoke City were relegated in 2018 and has only made 10 league appearances for Palace.

United football director John Murtough added: "Jack is an excellent goalkeeper with great experience throughout his career. His mentality and personality will be a real asset to our superb group of goalkeepers and the whole squad."

Manchester United exploring loan deal for Burnley's Dutch forward Wout Weghorst

Manchester United are exploring the possibility of signing Burnley forward Wout Weghorst on loan.

United have been in the market for a striker to provide attacking cover for Marcus Rashford, and are understood to have made initial contact with Burnley to find out if a deal is possible.

Netherlands international Weghorst moved to Burnley on a three-and-a-half year deal from Wolfsburg on Transfer Deadline Day in January 2022, but left to join Istanbul-based outfit Besiktas on a season-long loan last summer having found the back of the net just twice for the Clarets.

Weghorst remains on loan at Besiktas for the time being, and any deal may be complicated as it would require both clubs to agree to cut short Weghorst's loan.

The towering 6ft 6in striker scored one of the most dramatic goals of the World Cup, netting an equaliser deep into stoppage time of the Netherlands' quarter-final against Argentina, before the Dutch were eventually beaten on penalties.

A loan move is thought to be United's focus in the current window - with the intention of re-visiting the position in the summer when there will be more options available.

They were in the market for a player of Weghorst's profile last summer - they were interested in Sasa Kalajdzic and Benjamin Sesko.

"There is a reason [Martial has been substituted in his last seven games]. It is because he cannot manage the load," Ten Hag said. "This is why we are looking for another striker.

Manchester United have reportedly introduced a ‘Cristiano Ronaldo rule’ to ensure no first-team player earns more than £200,000-a-week.

The 37-year-old, who had his contract terminated by mutual consent in November, was believed to be pocketing £480,000-per-week at Old Trafford.

It was revealed in September how the Red Devils had set a Premier League record of boasting the highest wage bill at £384million for the 2021/22 season.

And following Ronaldo’s departure, United have put in place a salary cap to ensure no-one at the Theatre of Dreams is paid drastically more than their teammates.

According to the Daily Mail, boss Erik ten Hag, director of football John Murtough and chief executive Richard Arnold are keen to avoid a culture of jealousy in the dressing room.

And this is set to have an immediate impact on goalkeeper David de Gea, whose £375,000-a-week contract expires in the summer – though United have the option to tie him down for a further year.

It has been stated that the Spaniard has been offered a ‘take it or leave it offer’ in the region of between £180,000-£200,000-per-week.

De Gea recently revealed how he is in talks with United over a new deal as he insisted he wants to finish his career at the club.

The ‘Ronaldo rule’ has been brought in to avoid jealousy in the dressing room

Senior figures such as Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro are understood to be earning within the maximum bracket United are prepared to hand out.

Harry Maguire and Raphael Varane are also taking home similar salaries.

Luke Shaw, who is contracted until 2024, will be offered similar terms to De Gea.

But United may have a challenge in trying to persuade Marcus Rashford to agree to that salary, with Paris Saint-Germain prepared to offer him £850,000-a-week, Bild has stated.

Reports in December claimed Rashford was closing in on a new £400,000-per-week deal at United – which he instantly branded as fake news.

The Mail have also declared that United players have wage sanctions written into their contracts should they fail to qualify for the Champions League.

But the club are in a great position to finish in the top four this campaign as they sit fourth in the table having won their last four Premier League games.

Utd have a very high net spend.

But now you've lost out on Joa Felix to Chelsea too lol.

Continue to cry like a 10 year old girl sure.

But this is Utd thread.

Why doesnt a decent player want to join your club? I know but do you have a view or would you like a tissue?

Is Varane, Erikson, Anthony, Martinez not decent players?

Worry about your finished manager, finished team. 1 premier league in 30 years and that too in a covid hit season in front of empty stands. :)))

Varane is on his last legs lol. Anthony is the only decent one in your little list.

Why couldnt Utd secure Joa Felix? If you dont know , you wont know.

lol Utd fans would cut off their left arm to have Klopp, plastic fans wont. Stop with the stats, after us not winning league for 30 years, and you having your greatest team ever, we are still the most decorated team in English football :)))

Varane is still quality. It is Van Dijk who is on his last legs. . The fraud bottled it at the world cup when he missed his penalty in the shootout. And Liverpool fans say he is the greatest centre back in the premier league history. :)))

Erikson is better than all of your dead midfielders except Tiago.

Joa Felix wasn't secured because we weren't willing to pay the hefty loan fee plus his astronomical wages for 6 months.

It is embarrassing that at one stage that Liverpool were miles ahead of Man United in terms of league titles won, but currently Man United sit at 20 league titles to Liverpool's 19 league titles.

I wouldn't want the serial moaner crybaby Klopp as our manager. Liverpool fans try putting him up with Pep Guardiola :))).

Klopp finished mid table in his final season in Germany with Borussia Dortmund. He is now having a similar sort of decline at Liverpool. Klopp will eventually leave Liverpool and you guys will be back to the golden old days of Rogers and Hodgson. Maybe Slippy G will be your next manager.

Manchester United have agreed a deal to sign Netherlands striker Wout Weghorst on loan for the rest of the season.

The 30-year-old Burnley forward spent the first half of the season at Besiktas but is now heading to Manchester for a medical before the move can be completed.

A deal has been reached for his loan at the Turkish club to be terminated.

Weghorst scored eight goals and registered four assists in 16 league games for Besiktas.

The perfect fit? Why Ten Hag wanted Weghorst
Man Utd news and fan views in one place
His latest goal came in a 2-1 win against Kasimpasa on 7 January and, following that match, he appeared to wave goodbye to Besiktas' fans.

The move allows United manager Erik ten Hag to bring in his fellow Dutchman to fill the vacancy he has for a striker in his squad.

Weghorst also scored two late goals for the Netherlands in their World Cup quarter-final with Argentina last month.

He also scored in the penalty shoot-out, which Argentina went on to win.

The 30-year-old scored two goals in 20 appearances for Burnley following his £12m arrival from Wolfsburg 12 months ago, a contribution that was not enough to prevent the Clarets being relegated to the Championship.

Any title talk is silly. Really silly.
We will know more at the end of the month.
If we beat city palace and arsenal -very big if- the owners need to pull their finger out and get 3 players by the end of Jan.
RB, CM and striker.
Then we can talk league title.
We are quite a way off still.

Manchester United midfielder Donny van de Beek has been ruled out for the rest of the season with a knee injury.

The 25-year-old Netherlands international last played for the club in a win against Bournemouth on 3 January.

He was taken off near the end of the first half of that game.

"On the long term it is looking really good, he will be back for the start of pre-season," said United manager Erik ten Hag.

"The rest of the season he is out."

Van de Beek joined United from Ajax for £35m, plus £5m in add-ons, on a five-year contract in 2020.

"I think everyone's thoughts are with him," added Ten Hag. "It is terrible when you are in a season and you get a bad tackle, a bad injury.

"It is always really disappointing and thoughts, feelings are with the player. You express that, our group did that really well, and we are now happy his knee in the long term is good.

"In the same moments, mixed feelings. Disappointment he is out of this season.

"The players are feeling we are building something good and we want to be part of it and everyone wants to be part of it."

Manchester United staged a stunning late turnaround to come from behind and beat Manchester City in a dramatic derby at Old Trafford.

City looked to be closing the gap on Premier League leaders Arsenal after substitute Jack Grealish headed them in front from Kevin de Bruyne's cross on the hour, only for United to send their fans into raptures with a superb recovery.

Erik ten Hag's side drew level in contentious fashion with 12 minutes left as Bruno Fernandes scored despite the presence of Marcus Rashford in an offside position, City's protests that he had interfered with play ignored despite the flag going up.

Rashford was the central figure again four minutes later when he swept in substitute Alejandro Garnacho's cross at the Stretford End to move United to within one point of City, who remain five points adrift of Arsenal.

BBC

What a turnaround it has been since the 6-3 trashing by Man City in October. We wasted three years under Ole, who was a joke of a manager. We get a proper manager now and we look like a proper team. That is 9 wins in a row.

Still, any title talk is premature. We still need more players including a world class striker. I would settle for top 4 and a trophy.

Only one point behind Man City now.

Fantastic turnaround today and looking a better side without Ronaldo.

Rashford was clearly interfering with the play, but I am not complaining. Hopefully Arsenal can win the NLD today & then put United to the sword at the Emirates to pretty much seal the title.

No, we aren't. It took Arteta four seasons to turn Arsenal into title contenders. It shouldn't be expected of Ten Hag to turn Man United into title contenders in just 6 months.

Arsenal’s squad in 2019-20 was vastly inferior to United’s current squad. Arteta wouldn’t have taken 3 years with this team.

United are pretty much title contenders. Any top manager would have taken at best 12 months with this team & Ten Hag is world class.

Man United squad isn’t the greatest. We still need a top class striker in his prime, which we haven’t had since Van Persie. We could also do with another right winger, as I am not convinced with either Antony or Sancho. We also need backups for defensive midfield, centre back and right back. We also need to get rid of deadwood like Maguire, Lindelof, Elanga, McTominay etc.

Ten Hag has done a great job so far but expecting him to turn this United team into title contenders is asking too much.

I don't think it's fair to expect or demand it from him but the situation is that Man-U are in a title race

9 points is not an insurmountable amount and especially as they have to face them

If they don't win then that's no slight on them, I think top 4 would be a very good achievement and I think it's safe to say they pretty much have that sorted

British billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe's firm Ineos has officially entered the race to buy Manchester United.

United's owners the Glazer family said in November that they were considering selling the club as they "explore strategic alternatives".

Ratcliffe made an unsuccessful £4.25bn offer to buy Chelsea last year after owner Roman Abramovich put the London club up for sale.

Would you say that Newcastle are in the title race?

No

We've never ever won it before, don't really have a squad of winners whereas Man-U have multiple CL winners as well as WC winners in the squad, that makes a huge difference

Plus Man-U have won plenty in the past, different players but the club mindset is in a different place to us

We are in a top 4 race with imo more of a realistic top 6 race

United an city for that matter are in the last chance saloon for the title race.
Need to win the next 2 games and hope city beat arsenal.
Then only are we in a title race.
Arsenal should have this because City need to beat spurs wolves and arsenal to have a shout.
Very very tough. If the points gap is not narrowed by to 4 by the time the CL restart- it's done.
Old arsenal used to start cracking up in Feb so there is hope there 2 but our squad is too thin.
Arsenal have had fortune in that they haven't had more than 2 injuries at any one timeso their squad hasn't been tested

Manchester United

Dutch striker Wout Weghorst starts for Manchester United following his arrival on loan from Burnley and he comes in for Anthony Martial, who does not feature.

That's one of three changes from the side that began the 2-1 derby win on Saturday over Manchester City with Lisandro Martinez and Antony in for Tyrell Malacia and Fred.

Midfielders Casemiro and Fred are both one booking away from suspension and will miss Sunday's away game at Premier League leaders Arsenal if they get a yellow card tonight.

Manchester United XI: De Gea, Shaw, Martinez, Varane, Wan-Bissaka, Casemiro, Eriksen, Rashford, Fernandes, Antony, Weghorst.

Subs: Heaton, Lindelof, Maguire, Malacia, McTominay, Fred, Pellistri, Elanga, Garnacho.

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has to do without Casemiro as the midfielder serves his one-match ban for picking up a fifth yellow card in the 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace on Wednesday.

Scott McTominay is the man to come back into Ten Hag's starting line-up.

Manchester United head coach Erik ten Hag, speaking to Sky Sports: "Two games back-to-back really close. It's hard to accept that you lose in the last stage of the game.

"We made mistakes with all three goals, normally we are better in such situations. It can’t happen."

Under too much pressure for the third goal? "No. It’s tough, that’s clear. We've had a lot of games that they didn't have then they come here and are at home. We had moments on the break but we have to defend much better in that situation.

"We started the game very well, scored, are leading and then make so many mistake that are actually unacceptable. We have to learn the lesson and move on.

"The two first goals start with a corner and we make so many mistakes form the corner to the goal. It can’t happen. It’s a lesson we have to take, we will face the players with this because it can’t happen. Good teams don’t make such mistakes."

Reality check? "It can be. Today we have to accept. We are not satisfied with this defining performance because we can do better. You start well and you have to take benefit from that situation. It can’t happen that you concede like we did.

"This is one game. Last week we did very well. We kept them away from our box better and when they were in our box, we defended better."

Progress? "We realise that as well. I’ve said the same in the dressing room but I also said that if you want to win, you can’t make the mistakes I just mentioned."

This defeat in on the incompetent glazers. No adequate backup for Casemiro, no proper top class striker. I hate the glazers with every bone in my body.

Manchester United sought dialogue with Antoine Griezmann and his representative last summer to gauge the possibility of signing the France international, Sky Sports can exclusively reveal.

When football director John Murtough and recruitment consultant Tom Keane flew to Spain to formalise a deal for Casemiro in August 2022, they made calls to arrange a meeting with Griezmann's camp in Madrid to understand his situation and feelings around a transfer to Old Trafford.

The multi-functional player was on loan to Atletico Madrid from Barcelona at that point, but had his game time limited due to a clause that stipulated a permanent buy option of €40m (£35.2m) would be triggered if he played half of the minutes he was available for.

Erik ten Hag says Manchester United's trophy drought has gone on "too long" and insists he will "do everything" to bring silverware back to the club.

United are on their longest run without a major honour in 40 years having last tasted success in 2017, but this season's Carabao Cup gives them an opportunity to change that.

Ten Hag's side travel to the City Ground to take on Nottingham Forest in their semi-final first leg on Wednesday, live on Sky Sports, with the Dutchman looking to take a step closer to adding to the six trophies he won with Ajax.

Erik ten Hag: Man Utd boss urges club to 'strike' in January transfer window if opportunity arises before Deadline Day

Erik ten Tag is urging Manchester United to "strike" in the remaining days of the January transfer window should an opportunity arise.

The market for buying and selling players closes at 11pm on Tuesday night with United having only added goalkeeper Jack Butland and striker Wout Weghorst on loan deals until the end of the season.

With just four days until the window closes, Ten Hag believes the club "should go for it" if there is a chance to make a signing and has identified areas of the squad that need strengthening.

"In the coming days, should we have an opportunity, I would go for it but it's not only up to me. I think that always has to be the approach at this club," he said.

"Every day you have to get better so if there are opportunities to get better then you have to strike, that's my approach. I'm looking, doing research, I have an idea and have profiles to strengthen the squad."

United sit fourth in the Premier League and are on course to reach the Carabao Cup final with an FA Cup fourth-round tie to come on Saturday at home to Reading, plus a Europa League play-off against Barcelona next month amid a packed schedule which will see them play nine games in the next 30 days.

Asked if he thinks the fact United are fighting on four fronts shows they are ahead of schedule with the progress they are making this season, Ten Hag said: "That's good and that's why we need all the players we have in our squad, to develop them but especially to get the right results out of it. We want to stay in the competitions as long as possible. We have to fight for that and I think that's good for the development of the club.

"If we are ahead of the process, I don't know. Every day we have to give our maximum, we have to approach it that good is not good enough, we have do better so that we keep progressing. It never ends, we have to approach it like that. If you are ahead or not in the process, it is not that important it's where we are now. We want to win every game, it doesn't matter the opponent."

Manchester United fans could soon celebrate having new owners in charge after a bombshell report claimed takeover negotiations to be at an ‘advanced stage’.

The Glazer family have run Man Utd since 2005. However, their ownership of the club has been far from smooth. They got off to an incredibly bad start by only paying £270million of the £790m original takeover out of their own pocket. The rest was borrowed against Man Utd, which immediately put the Red Devils into over £500m of debt.

The Glazers have rarely even visited Old Trafford in the last 18 years, let alone attended matches. They have failed to communicate with Man Utd supporters, despite promising to do so regularly at the start. And this has only worsened tensions.

The success of the Sir Alex Ferguson era helped to gloss over some of the problems going on behind the scenes. But Man Utd’s involvement in the failed European Super League saw fans reach a new level of hatred for their owners.

Ever since then, the Glazers have looked into reducing their involvement in Man Utd. They have considered selling a minority stake or finding a new owner to take complete charge.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe is widely viewed as the most likely candidate to buy Man Utd. He is a fan of the club and is also the richest man in Britain, worth an eye-watering £11bn according to Forbes.

Ten Hag on signing replacement after Eriksen injury: “Something on Deadline Day is difficult, you can't make policy on bad injuries”.

“We have players in the midfield, good players, players who can fill the gap”.

Manchester United's Christian Eriksen is set to be out until at least late April after sustaining an ankle injury in his side's FA Cup win over Reading on Saturday.

United manager Erik ten Hag believes the club have the "players who can fill the gap" caused by Eriksen's absence.

"On deadline day it's difficult [to bring in a replacement]. You can't make policy on such bad injuries," he said.

"But we have players in the midfield department and good players."

The Denmark midfielder has made 31 appearances for United this season.

The former Ajax, Tottenham, Inter Milan and Brentford player signed a three-year contract at Old Trafford in the summer.

"[He] is expected to be out of action for an extended period," the club said in a statement.

"There is hope that Christian can return in time to play a role in the final stages of the season.

"While investigations are continuing, initial assessments indicate that Eriksen is likely to be out until late April or early May."

Man Utd transfer news: Marcel Sabitzer at training ground to complete loan from Bayern Munich

Austria midfielder Marcel Sabitzer is at Manchester United's Carrington training ground to complete a loan move from Bayern Munich.

The 28-year-old is available during the current transfer window, and following Christian Eriksen's long-term injury and a short-term problem for Scott McTominay, United explored the prospect of a loan move.

At Tuesday's media conference United manager Erik ten Hag said it was "difficult" to complete any deals on deadline day.

However, Ten Hag is well known at Bayern Munich because of his spell as second-team coach there, and that relationship could help speed up the process.

Sabitzer is a good signing on a loan. I wanted him a couple of years ago. Yeah, he has been underwhelming at Bayern, but he is quality player and is a great replacement for Erikson for rest of the season.

Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood had faced allegations of attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault; Greenwood has now had all charges against him dropped.

Charges of attempted rape and assault have been dropped against Manchester United footballer Mason Greenwood.

The 21-year-old was arrested in January last year amid allegations surrounding images and videos that emerged online.

He was later charged with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

The Crown Prosecution Service said the charges were discontinued after key witnesses withdrew their involvement.

A spokesman said: "We have a duty to keep cases under continuous review.

"In this case a combination of the withdrawal of key witnesses and new material that came to light meant there was no longer a realistic prospect of conviction. In these circumstances, we are under a duty to stop the case.

"We have explained our decision to all parties.

"We would always encourage any potential victims to come forward and report to police and we will prosecute wherever our legal test is met."

Within hours of the allegations surfacing online at the beginning of 2022, the forward, who has made one appearance for England, was suspended from playing or training with the Old Trafford club.

The club has been asked by the BBC to comment.

Greater Manchester Police said it was "only fair" to announce Greenwood would no longer face criminal proceedings.

Ch Supt Michaela Kerr said the decision had "not been taken lightly".

She added: "I would, however, like to use this opportunity to reiterate the force's commitment to investigating allegations of violence against women and girls and supporting those affected, regardless of their circumstances, throughout what can be a hard and upsetting time for them."

As far as I am concerned, Greentrash is guilty and shouldn’t be allowed back at the club. I don’t care if charges are dropped against him.

Critical 2 weeks from coming up for us. Palace and Leeds twice need to end in victory, otherwise I feel that our stretched squad will start to feel the heat from spurs and maybe even Liverpool for the top 4 spot, given Europa starts again

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has asked his players to focus on football after team-mate Mason Greenwood had all criminal charges against him dropped.

The Crown Prosecution Service said on Thursday that charges against the 21-year-old were discontinued after key witnesses withdrew their involvement.

United is to "conduct its own process" before deciding what to do next, with Greenwood still suspended by the club.

"We have always to focus on the game, no matter what," said Ten Hag.

Greenwood was arrested in January 2022 amid allegations surrounding images and videos.

He was later charged with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

Within hours of the allegations surfacing at the beginning of 2022, the forward, who has made one appearance for England, was suspended from playing or training with the Old Trafford club.

Asked whether he had anything to say on Greenwood, Ten Hag said: "No. Nothing. I can't add nothing, I refer to the statement of the club."

On whether he has spoken to the England striker and whether he was part of the club process, the Dutchman added: "As I said, in this moment, I can't give comment about the process.

"I can't say anything about it, I refer to the statement of the club and, at this moment, I can't add anything."

Manchester United and Paris St-Germain will be expected to pay a transfer fee of at least £90m if they are to sign prolific Napoli and Nigeria forward Victor Osimhen, 24, in the summer. (ESPN)

Marcus Rashford continued his post-World Cup scoring streak as a Manchester United side reduced to 10 men survived late Crystal Palace pressure to secure Premier League victory at Old Trafford.

Bruno Fernandes opened the scoring from the penalty spot after the video assistant referee spotted a Will Hughes handball and United seemed to be cruising when Rashford turned home Luke Shaw's cross 17 minutes into the second half for his 11th goal since returning from Qatar.

But the contest turned dramatically when, amid a confrontation that resulted in both Antony and Jeffrey Schlupp being booked, VAR Tony Harrington spotted Casemiro with his hands round Hughes' neck.

After a pitchside review, referee Andre Marriner sent the influential Brazilian off for violent conduct, which triggers an immediate three-match domestic ban.

Schlupp halved the deficit almost immediately and amid increasingly frantic scenes around the home area, United ended the game with four central defenders protecting their goal as Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof were added to starting pair Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane.

Respective managers Erik ten Hag and Patrick Vieira, who started the afternoon laying wreaths in honour of the victims of the 1958 Munich air disaster, ended it ranting at fourth official Joshua Smith and then marching to the centre circle to make their points to Marriner as both argued against decisions that went against their team.

United's 13th consecutive win at Old Trafford lifts them to third in the table while Palace remain 12th.

With Antony Martial ruled out through injury, Rashford's goals output is going to be crucial for United.

He now has 19 in all competitions and the England man also claimed an assist for the hosts' opener when his cross was handled by Hughes and Fernandes converted the resulting penalty.

If Rashford's goals are needed, and with Casemiro now missing two Premier League games within five days against Leeds and the home encounter with Leicester on 19 February, Fred is almost as important.

The Brazilian has tended to be held up as an example of United's profligacy in the transfer market.

He cost £47m in 2018 but has rarely shown anything positive beyond running around furiously to no great end product.

Yet, as Ten Hag pointed out recently, the midfielder partners Casemiro for his country "and Brazil are not a bad side", suggesting the 29-year-old is capable of more than he has produced in his nearly five seasons in the Premier League.

He has looked a different player in recent times.

Fred still hustles and harries but he also links play well, is prepared to shoot from distance and, as he proved when he burst into the box and sent Wout Weghorst's cut-back to the near post narrowly wide of the Palace goal, can be a significant threat inside the area as well.

When he laid on his back deep in injury time and gulped in some air, it underlined the effort Fred had put in during the desperate defending United were forced into at the end.
