More than five bids will be made for Manchester United before Wednesday evening’s deadline for second offers - and there could be as many as eight.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his INEOS delegation have been described as impressive and sophisticated in their approach to buying Manchester United.

So much anti Qatar narrative in the media. Same nonsense that we saw during the world cup. English media is so bloody xenophobic and Islamophobic. It makes me so angry.

Ineos owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Qatari banker Sheikh Jassim will submit improved bids to buy Manchester United before Wednesday's 21:00 GMT deadline.

The two parties, the only publicly-declared bidders, met with United officials this month.

Both are understood to have held positive meetings while visiting Old Trafford and United's training ground.

Ineos want to buy the combined Glazer shareholding of around 69%, but the Qataris are targeting 100% of the club.

BBC Sport has learned that United officials met eight different potential investors over a 10-day period of high-level meetings recently, including Ratcliffe and representatives of Sheikh Jassim.

The amount of their initial bids have not been disclosed (with reports both are in the region of £4.5bn), but they are clearly far below the £5-6bn valuation that the club's American owners - the Glazers - have established.

Whether they - or any other prospective bidders - are able to submit an offer that persuades the Glazers to sell is the next key question.

If not, and with United's fortunes improving significantly in recent months under manager Erik ten Hag, the Americans may well yet decide to retain the club and perhaps instead look to sell a minority stake to the likes of US hedge fund Elliott Investment Management.

The Glazer family said in November they were considering selling United.

Announcing its initial bid Sheikh Jassim's Qatari consortium said the offer "plans to return the club to its former glories".

Described as a life-long Manchester United fan, Sheikh Jassim is chairman of Qatari bank QIB and the son of a former prime minister of Qatar.

The Ineos group, owned by 70-year-old British billionaire Ratcliffe, has a history of investment in sport and owns French Ligue 1 club Nice and Swiss club Lausanne.

Its sporting portfolio also includes high-profile sailing team Ineos Britannia - led by Sir Ben Ainslie - a five-year partnership with Formula 1 team Mercedes, and took over the British-based Team Sky in cycling in 2019.

At the time of the first bid it was understood its proposal would emphasise Manchester-born Ratcliffe would be "a British custodian for the club" and would aim to "put the Manchester back into Manchester United".

Ineos owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Qatari banker Sheikh Jassim are set to submit new bids to buy Manchester United after a deadline was extended at their request amid confusion on Wednesday night.

Bidders were told they had until 21:00 GMT to submit second, revised bids.

BBC Sport has been told several other proposed investors made their submissions by that time.

It is unclear when the new deadline will be.

Ratcliffe and Sheikh Jassim are the only publicly declared bidders.

Initially on Wednesday evening there had been strong indications from sources close to the pair that they had submitted fresh bids.

But it then emerged over the past 48 hours first the Qatari team and then Ineos had submitted requests to Raine - the investment bank conducting the sale - for more time to make their second offers, which was granted.

The situation is described as "live and fast moving" by someone close to the talks but sources insist that both Sheikh Jassim and Ineos are committed to making second bids.

However the twist in the sale process will only reinforce concerns among some fans that American owners the Glazer family may decide not to sell the club.

Ineos wants to buy the combined Glazer shareholding of about 69%, but the Qataris are targeting 100% of the club.

Both sides met with United officials earlier in March.

Finnish entrepreneur Thomas Zilliacus says he has submitted a bid to buy Manchester United.

Zilliacus wants to buy half of the club with the purchasing of the other half by fans, who will be involved in the club's decision-making process.

Interested parties had until 21:00 GMT on Wednesday to put their bids in but the deadline has since been extended.

"Any sport club ultimately should belong to its fans. My bid is built on equality with fans," said Zilliacus.

"The current development, where billionaire sheiks and oligarchs take over clubs and control them as their personal playgrounds is not a healthy trend.

"The current market value of the club is just under $3.9bn (£3.17bn). That means that if every one of the fans of the club would join in buying the club, the total sum per fan would amount to less than $6.

"My group will finance half of the sum needed to take over the club, and will ask the fans, through a new company that is being set up for this specific purpose, to participate for the other half.

"If every fan joins it means less than $3 per fan."

Zilliacus plans to give fans a say through an app from which they can "participate and cast" their vote "when deciding on footballing matters relating to the club".

Ineos owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Qatari banker Sheikh Jassim are the only publicly declared bidders and are expected to submit second, revised offers having met with United officials earlier in March.

It is also understood US investment company Elliott has made an offer to purchase a minority stake, irrespective of who ends up owning the club.

Zilliacus, who has previously been involved with HJK Helsinki and ice hockey champions Jokerit in his homeland, is the founder and chairman of new social media group novaM Group.

He wants to buy United through XXI Century Capital, which is an investment firm owned by his holding company.

Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani will submit his new bid for Manchester United over the weekend.

The deadline for second bids was 9pm on Wednesday but Sheikh Jassim's representatives asked for an extension on Tuesday and they have been given more time. There is no new deadline for his bid.

Qatari banker Sheikh Jassim has joined Ineos owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe in submitting a second bid to buy Manchester United.

A representative for Sheikh Jassim said on Saturday they put in a revised bid overnight.

On Thursday, Ratcliffe put in his second bid after Wednesday's confusion and extended deadline.

It followed Finnish entrepreneur Thomas Zilliacus stating he has submitted a bid to buy the Old Trafford club.

Zilliacus wants to buy half of the club with the other half bought by fans, who will be part of club decision-making.

Interested parties had until 21:00 GMT on Wednesday to enter their bids before the deadline was extended.

On Thursday, an Ineos spokesperson said: "Ratcliffe and Ineos can confirm we have submitted a revised bid."

The Glazer family, who bought Manchester United for £790m in 2005, announced they were considering selling the club in November.

This takeover business has become a bit of a circus. I hope it is concluded soon, because I fear that it could still drag on for months and that could have an affect on our summer transfer activity.

Manchester United owe £969.6m through a combination of gross debt, bank borrowings and outstanding transfer fees with associated payments, according to new figures.

The club released its second quarter results to 31 December on Thursday.

Unlike previous years, there was no investors call afterwards as a direct result of the ongoing "strategic review".

BREAKING: Manchester United have agreed a new long-term deal with Luke Shaw

Erik ten Hag is hopeful Marcus Rashford will be fit for Sunday's Premier League clash with Newcastle

Terrible again today against Newcastle.

If Spurs get a point against Everton tomorrow, then Man Utd will slip out of the top 4.

Luke Shaw: Manchester United lacked passion, desire, hunger and attitude at Newcastle

Luke Shaw has admitted Manchester United were beaten by "passion, desire, hunger and attitude" in their 2-0 defeat at Newcastle - describing the nature of their defeat as "unacceptable".

In a one-sided encounter, second-half goals by Joe Willock and Callum Wilson saw Newcastle surge to an impressive 2-0 win and leapfrog Erik ten Hag's side into third in the Premier League.

"I don't think they won the game on quality today, they won it on passion, desire, hunger, attitude, and they had higher motivation than us and that can't be possible," Shaw told Sky Sports. "I feel I say the same things every time we lose. It's not acceptable. At Manchester United that can't be possible."

While the scoreline was sufficiently damaging for Manchester United's top-four hopes, the devil was in the detail as Newcastle registered an XG of 3.54 compared to Man Utd's 0.54 and the hosts made 134 sprints compared to the visitors' 93.

Man Utd boss Ten Hag was equally unimpressed with his team's limp display.

"Luke Shaw was right, I agree with him, Newcastle wanted it more," he said. "They were more determined, passionate and had more desire."

Speaking to Sky Sports, the United manager added: "I hate to say it, they were better today. Especially in determination, passion and desire. They wanted to win more this week. So they won.

"We had our opportunities but then you have to go for goal with the determination they did. It wasn't good enough. We allowed them too many chances. In the past we were better. You have to be hungry, give everything, every game.

"Our attacking game was not good enough."

Since winning the Carabao Cup final by beating Newcastle on February 26, United have failed to score a goal in their three subsequent Premier League matches, losing 7-0 at Liverpool, drawing 0-0 at home to Southampton before suffering this Sunday's setback.

"They have been well beaten today, let us be clear," summarised Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville.

"They play Brentford and Everton in the next week. If they get six points, they look like they are in a great position again.

"But they are not fooling anyone in terms of the bigger picture of where they need to go. Erik ten Hag will know that they need to make sure they continue to improve but there are worrying signs in these big matches away from home.

"They just do not turn up. They were never in that game today. You are thinking they are going to improve in the second half but they did not. They were really poor in the second half as well as the first half. They deserved to get beaten.

"Newcastle did want it more. When you look at Manchester United's season, I am happy overall. But you have got to turn up in the big games away from home. You have to know you can play well in the biggest games.

"Barcelona away was an outlier. They played really well in Barcelona [in the Europa League]. But other than that, against the top teams, they have not shown up. There is too much evidence now. If you cannot play in the big games for Manchester United you have no chance.

"Erik ten Hag needs to work out which ones he can take forward and which ones he can't."

I'm not going to laugh at Man U for losing against Newcastle because we still need to go there and it's a tough place to get points.

But I have to laugh at Man U fans (and deluded pundits like Gary Neville) who thought they were in the title race :)))

Manchester United defender Luke Shaw has signed a new four-year contract to keep him at the club until June 2027.

The 27-year-old will extend his stay at Old Trafford to more than a decade, after joining from Southampton in 2014.

Not at their best tonight against Brentford but they did enough to win 1-0 and move back into the top 4.

Erik ten Hag says "it's the truth" Manchester United are too reliant on goals from Marcus Rashford after the England striker hit the winner against Brentford at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils climbed back into the top four thanks to Rashford's 15th Premier League goal - and 28th in all competitions for his club - this season.

"Yes, it's the truth," said Ten Hag when asked whether United were too reliant on Rashford.

"But we know other players can score as well. Bruno [Fernandes] can score as well. We have many more players across the squad who can score."

Man Utd: Marcus Rashford injury 'does not look well', says Erik ten Hag

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag says it "does not look well" for Marcus Rashford after the striker picked up an injury during Saturday's 2-0 win against Everton.

The 25-year-old England international pulled up with an apparent groin injury towards the end of the match.

TV pictures showed Rashford walking slowly up the tunnel afterwards.

When it was mentioned to Ten Hag that the damage looked serious, the Dutchman replied: "You are a doctor?"

However, he had already told BT Sport of his concerns and then complained about United's schedule, which involved them playing a late Sunday game last week and an early Saturday one in this round of fixtures.

"We have to wait. He doesn't look well," Ten Hag said of Rashford.

"This was avoidable. All science and research tell you players need a certain time to recover.

"It is also part of the schedule that we are now finding ourselves in this situation and now we can only pray he is not dropping off."

Manchester United are preparing for a summer clearout with up to 13 players set to leave Old Trafford this summer.

BREAKING: Parties interested in buying Manchester United have been told their will be a third round of bidding.

Bidders have been given until the end of April to submit their revised offers.

Forward Marcus Rashford will be out for "a few games" with a muscle injury, Manchester United have said.

The 25-year-old England international left the field holding his groin during the second half of United's win over Everton on Saturday.

United did not give a specific timeline for his return but said he is expected to play again this season.

"I can't give more details of it because we don't know," manager Erik ten Hag said.

"We have to see how it develops, the injury.

"Of course it's a setback and he's disappointed about it, but he's not totally broke because he knows he will return quickly. He's optimistic and he's started straight on his recovery and his rehab so that helps to get back soon."

Rashford has scored 28 times in 47 games this season and has featured in all of United's league games. He has scored 20 goals in 28 matches since returning after the World Cup in December.

United play Sevilla in the Europa League quarter-final first leg on Thursday at Old Trafford.

Fellow forward Anthony Martial could feature in Rashford's absence, having scored his first goal since December after coming off the bench against Everton on Saturday as he continues his comeback from injury.

Ten Hag said the France international was "ready" to start.

"The frontline against Brentford [United beat Brentford 1-0 with Martial coming off the bench] did really well and then we decided to continue that against Everton and they did again very well," Ten Hag added.

"The advantage was also we can bring Anthony Martial slowly back but in the team, give him minutes, get him used to the game at the highest level, to high intensity.

"But I think already against Everton he was ready to start a game."

Ten Hag also backed Brazilian forward Antony, who has not scored in the Premier League since the World Cup, to improve his threat in the final third.

"He has to work on that," the Dutch manager said.

"He is not scoring in the Premier League but scored a really important goal against Real Betis and the winner against Barcelona [both in the Europa League].

"You cannot say they are not big games.

"He can also do it in Premier League. I have no concerns. He has to step up. He likes challenges. When he is in the team, it is winning. That is why he plays for Brazil."

Great. Our only goalscorer injured. Now, we are left with always injured Martial and awful weghorst.

Finnish entrepreneur Thomas Zilliacus has withdrawn his offer to buy Manchester United, saying the decision of current owners the Glazers to go to a third round of bidding is a "farce".

The 69-year-old said the Glazers were giving "no respect" to the club.

Zilliacus, Qatari banker Sheikh Jassim and Ineos owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe have publicly submitted second bids.

"The delays will make it very difficult for any new owner to build a winning team for next season," he said.

Writing on Twitter, Zilliacus added: "The bidding is turning into a farce, with Glazers giving no respect to the club.

"Jim Ratcliffe, Sheik Jassim and myself all were ready to negotiate a deal to buy United. Instead Glazers chose to start a new round.

"I will not participate in a farce set up to maximize the profit for the sellers at the expense of Manchester United."

Zilliacus, who has previously been involved with HJK Helsinki and ice hockey champions Jokerit in his homeland, is the founder and chairman of new social media organisation novaM Group.

He wanted to buy United through XXI Century Capital, an investment firm owned by his holding company.

When publicly announcing his bid last month the entrepreneur said he planned to buy half of the club with the other half bought by fans, who would be part of club decision-making.

The Glazer family, who bought the Red Devils for £790m in 2005, announced they were considering selling in November and have established a valuation of £5bn-6bn.

The decision to go to a third round of bidding means potential purchasers, either of the whole club or just a partial stake, must put more offers forward in the hope of concluding a deal.

It had been initially hoped the process being run by the Raine Group would be completed by the end of the season, but the additional time for new bids means that is now unlikely to happen.

Sheikh Jassim will be expected to submit a new bid to buy 100% of the club, with Ratcliffe having followed a strategy of attempting to purchase the Glazer family's 69% shareholding.

2-0 up at HT against Sevilla.

McGuire comes on at HT.

Final result - 2-2.

Sevilla to win at home and send Utd packing.

Quite an introduction for Harry Maguire.

Dear me, how bad is he.

Lisandro Martinez: Manchester United defender visibly upset after injury

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag says Lisandro Martinez's injury during the Europa League quarter-final with Sevilla "does not look that great".

United, who had used all five substitutes, were reduced to 10 men when defender Martinez was helped off with the home side leading 2-1.

United conceded a 92nd-minute equaliser and are likely to be without Martinez for the return leg next Thursday.

Ten Hag said afterwards that it was not an Achilles injury.

"There was no opponent involved," said Ten Hag. "We'll have to wait and see."

Martinez, who joined United from Ajax last July in a deal worth up to £57m, looked visibly upset when he went off in the 86th minute.

The World Cup winner with Argentina was helped off the pitch at Old Trafford by Sevilla's Gonzalo Montiel and Marcos Acuna, who also play for Argentina.

He was then placed on a stretcher and carried away for treatment.

"Let's hope it's not so bad, but the fact that he was stretchered away from the technical area and he was in tears, it's difficult to say what's happened but he was holding on to his ankle," said former Manchester United keeper Peter Schmeichel, who was at Old Trafford for BBC Radio 5 Live

Misses the cross leading to the first goal and then scores an OG in injury time.

Sevilla had 12 men on the pitch 2nd half. :)))

Maguire has to be worst singing of all time. He is awful in every aspect.

I can’t believe Southgate picks him for England.

Weghorst is absolutely crap. I grew up watching strikers like Cole, Yorke, Sheringham, Solksjaer, Van Nistelroy, Rooney, Berbatov, Tevez, Van Persie, all great strikers. But now we got Weghorst, a Burnley reject playing for us. Absolutely shocking stuff.

Lisandro Martinez: Manchester United defender out for rest of season with fractured foot

Manchester United centre-back Lisandro Martinez will miss the rest of the season after fracturing a metatarsal bone in his foot.

The 25-year-old sustained the injury in United's 2-2 Europa League quarter-final against Sevilla on Thursday.

Erik ten Hag's side were reduced to 10 men when Martinez was helped off in the 86th minute with United leading 2-1.

Martinez's centre-back partner Raphael Varane also sustained an injury and is expected to be out for a few weeks.

"Everyone at Manchester United sends Lisandro and Rapha our best wishes for a speedy recovery," the club said.

Martinez, a World Cup winner with Argentina, was helped off the pitch at Old Trafford by Sevilla's Gonzalo Montiel and Marcos Acuna, his international team-mates.

He was then placed on a stretcher and carried away for treatment.

Need to get top 4 and get out of here.
Things could really go bad if spurs win their next couple and then beat us.
Next 2 league games very very important now without our first choice defence

I can't believe Man Utd signed him.

When I was told about the signing, I thought it was a wind-up.

BREAKING: American financial investment giant Carlyle is in talks for a minority investment in Manchester United.

Easy win at Forest.

2-0 but it could have been a few more.

Up to 3rd place now and looking good for a Champions League spot.

Marcus Rashford has returned to training for Manchester United before Thursday's Europa League quarter-final second leg in Sevilla.

Rashford, 25, has not played since he sustained a groin injury during United's home Premier League win against Everton on 8 April.

United had said the England striker, who has scored 31 goals this season, would "miss a few games".

Luke Shaw, Marcel Sabitzer and Tyrell Malacia also trained at Carrington.

Rashford was unavailable for the first leg against Sevilla at Old Trafford, which United drew 2-2, as well as Sunday's 2-0 win at Nottingham Forest.

Sabitzer, who scored twice against Sevilla, was withdrawn from the starting line-up at the City Ground after picking up an injury in the warm-up, while Malacia also missed the trip with a knee problem.

Shaw, meanwhile, has not played since he was substituted in United's 1-0 win at home against Brentford on 5 April.

Should he be fit to play, the England defender could provide much-needed cover at centre-back, with Lisandro Martinez ruled out for the season and Raphael Varane also picking up an injury against Forest.

Bruno Fernandes is also out of the Sevilla trip, with the Portugal midfielder serving a one-match suspension.

After Thursday's Europa League game, Manchester United take on Brighton at Wembley in the FA Cup semi-finals on Sunday and face a key Premier League clash at Tottenham on 27 April.

Sevilla 3-0 Utd

What was De Gea thinking there :))

FULL-TIME
Sevilla 3-0 Manchester United (Agg: 5-2)

Manchester United are out of the Europa League after a horror night in Spain.

They were 2-0 up in the first leg, before being pegged back to 2-2 at Old Trafford. Yet they were still expected to advance.

But United have been absolutely terrible. Harry Maguire lost possession for the first goal, Sevilla headed in a second from a corner before David de Gea gifted the third goal. Two goals for Youssef En-Nesyri and one for Loic Bade.

United outplayed, embarrassed. Over and out.

I swear to God, I genuinely dislike Harry Maguire. My dislike for him isn't just football related, it is personal. I have never thought that a footballer would make me hate football, but that is exactly what watching Maguire does to me. I can't stand the sight of him.

DDG needs to be replaced in the summer too. He has been a great servant, but he isn't a modern day goalkeeper.

Sancho is a talent but he needs to be sold in the summer. He will never come good for Man United.

It was a quarter-final to forget for Manchester United - but a second leg in Seville which is likely to stick in Erik ten Hag's mind when building his squad for next season.

In the first leg at Old Trafford, United were 2-0 up and cruising only for a pair of late own goals to leave the tie in the balance. The worst was yet to come.

Amid a thunderous atmosphere at Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium, Sevilla ran out comfortable 3-0 winners - 5-2 on aggregate - with two of their goals directly down to United errors.

Ten Hag's side only have themselves to blame. No wonder the United manager was furious in his post-match interviews.

United face Brighton at Wembley in the FA Cup semi-finals on Sunday before visiting Tottenham in a key game in the Premier League top-four race four days later.

They have won a trophy this season, but if they repeat their performance in Seville in these games, their season could be in tatters.

Of course, the opposite could be true - with so much to play for, there is the immediate opportunity for United's players to put this debacle behind them. However, this felt like a tipping point for many of the squad.

With Bruno Fernandes suspended, they created almost nothing. Marcus Rashford, their top scorer this season, was thrown on half-fit at half-time as he continues to recover from a groin injury - demonstrating their lack of cutting edge.

In midfield, Casemiro was well below his best and picked up a yellow card which would have ruled him out of the semi-final first leg - not that United ever looked like making it that far.

Harry Maguire endured another torrid evening in the centre of defence, giving the ball away for the opener, while alongside him Victor Lindelof was not much better.

Without the injured Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez, United are simply not good enough in defence - and must surely reinforce in the summer.

Without the injured Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez, United are simply not good enough in defence - and must surely reinforce in the summer.

He should have been sold in 2019-2020. He was a top keeper 6-7 years ago, but in modern football, keepers are meant to be more than just shot stoppers. They are meant to be good with their feet, which De Gea isn't. Ten Hag will never be able to fully implement his philosophy with DDG in goal.

Unacceptable for players not to give best - Ten Hag

Erik ten Hag says he will "not accept a team that is not giving its best" as Manchester United prepare to face Brighton for a place in the FA Cup final at Wembley on Sunday.

Twelve-time winners United crashed out of the Europa League quarter-finals on Thursday with a 3-0 defeat by Sevilla..

It was a result which manager Ten Hag said had left him "really mad".

"We played a quarter-final in Europe, you have to give everything. But we didn't. It is unacceptable," he said.

"As a manager, I cannot accept a team that is not giving its best. I will never accept it. I made them aware of my feelings. They didn't manage the standards of how I manage a team in professional football.

"Even if you don't play at the highest level we still have to win. That is what we have to learn. If we have setbacks, we have to stick to the plan, stick to the game. You have to keep the confidence."

His Brighton counterpart Roberto de Zerbi, meanwhile, said appearing in the semi-final was an "honour" and that his side will play with "emotion".

The Seagulls are seeking to reach the final for the first time since 1983 - when they lost to United in a replay.

"We are excited. We want to play with our DNA," the Italian said.

"Since working in the UK, you understand the importance of the FA Cup. It's special."

Tottenham's fightback against Manchester United was driven by "anger" after last weekend's "unacceptable" defeat, says forward Son Heung-min.

Tottenham lost their previous game 6-1 at Newcastle and trailed 2-0 on Thursday before pegging United back.

Pedro Porro's goal gave Spurs hope before Son completed the recovery with a 79th-minute equaliser.

"We wanted to give everything and that was the dressing room speech," said Son.

The draw at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in Ryan Mason's first game back as interim manager was enough to lift Spurs above Liverpool and Aston Villa into fifth spot.

They sit six points behind fourth-placed Manchester United with five games left.

Son added: "We couldn't let the game go. We were really angry about it, we didn't deserve to be 2-0 down at half-time.

"The last week was unacceptable and we didn't want to repeat that. We feel really, really sorry for the performance and result and today we wanted to bring a good energy.

"We really appreciated [the fans'] support and they were fighting with us."

Former Tottenham player Mason, who also took interim charge when Jose Mourinho was dismissed in April 2021, said it was important for Spurs to build on the result after a torrid run that has led to three different managers in a month.

Cristian Stellini was put in charge following Antonio Conte's departure but was sacked after the Newcastle thrashing on Sunday, with Mason taking over until the end of the season.

"It has been difficult after Sunday as the manner of the defeat wasn't nice," added Mason.

"The most important thing now and until end of the season is to act as a team. Small details can change results. The most important thing to me will always be together.

"To see a team that was fighting for each other, it's important in football and probably the most important thing."

Some thought 90% is enough - Ten Hag

Manchester United travelled to Spurs on the back of beating Brighton on penalties in the FA Cup semi-final on Sunday and went 2-0 up following first-half goals from Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford before failing to secure the win.

"The time is enough to recover," said United manager Erik ten Hag.

"Our players are in demand to be ready. Today we are not ready. Some thought 90% is enough. But we lose focus.

"That's why we give goals away. We did not do our jobs in positioning."

United have a six point advantage and two games in hand on Spurs and sixth-placed Aston Villa, who they host on Sunday.

"I know they are not robots and it is a tough schedule. But when you are playing for Manchester United, you have to give [everything] on every occasion," added Ten Hag.

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has praised Bruno Fernandes for being willing to "suffer and sacrifice" to get fit to face Tottenham.

Fernandes was substituted in extra-time of his side's FA Cup semi-final win on penalties against Brighton on Sunday.

The midfielder was later pictured wearing a protective boot on his right leg but played the whole game as United drew 2-2 at Tottenham on Thursday.

"It was tough. A big compliment to Bruno," said Ten Hag.

"He absolutely didn't want to miss this [Tottenham] game and did everything to get fit.

"He is the example that you have to suffer and sacrifice when you want to play at the top level - when you want to achieve something."

Portugal international Fernandes, who has five goals and seven assists in the Premier League this season, has helped United to fourth in the top flight and an FA Cup final outing, having already won the League Cup with the Old Trafford side earlier on in the campaign.

However, he was criticised for his behaviour and attitude during a 7-0 defeat by Liverpool in March and his role as United captain was subsequently questioned.

Ten Hag came out in support of the 28-year-old at the time and has again praised him after the trip to Spurs.

"Once again he showed how great a captain he is, how he has taken responsibility," added Ten Hag, whose side play Aston Villa on Sunday.

"Even though he is not 100% fit, he did the job. He was important in this [Tottenham] game as well and, hopefully, others in the team can see him as an inspiration and do the same."

Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad al-Thani is expected to lodge an improved third bid of less than £5bn for Manchester United by Friday’s 10pm BST deadline. The offer would be markedly less than the £6bn valuation of the club’s owners, the Glazers.

Sheikh Jassim, a Qatari banker, remains intent on purchasing 100% of the club but will not pay more than what he believes United are worth. The Guardian understands this is more than £1bn below the American family’s asking price.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe, the only other publicly declared buyer for a controlling interest, is thought to want to acquire a little more than 50%, leaving Joel and Avram Glazer with a 20% stake. Ratcliffe, one of Britain’s richest people, may have to borrow to complete that deal.

A third option may be that one or more of the Glazers retain their stake and take investment into the club, with Elliott Investment Management and the Carlyle Group interested in doing so.

Manchester United: Sir Jim Ratcliffe & Sheikh Jassim make final bids

Qatari banker Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani and Sir Jim Ratcliffe's Ineos Group have submitted their final bids for Manchester United, BBC Sport has been told.

They are the two main parties looking to take control of the club.

Club owners, the Glazer family, will now assess their position after the latest bid deadline passed at 22:00 BST on Friday.

Both bidders are eager for a resolution to a process that began in November.

BBC Sport has been told the offer from Sheikh Jassim is around £5bn and includes one figure that would go direct to the sellers.

It also includes a plan to make a significant amount of additional capital and infrastructure investment into the club.

Manchester United will make a move for Paris-St Germain and Brazil forward Neymar, 31, if the Qatari bid, led by Sheikh Jassim, for the club is successful

Sir Jim Ratcliffe's Ineos Group may have taken a significant step towards taking control of Manchester United after it emerged its bid put a higher value on the club than Sheikh Jassim's.

Sources with knowledge of the bidding process have told BBC Sport that the Ineos offer received before 22:00 BST on Friday was the highest, relative to the stake they intend to take.

Qatar banker Sheikh Jassim wants to buy 100% of the club and has offered about £5bn, but British businessman Ratcliffe only wants a controlling stake.

This was initially viewed as the Glazer family's 69% stake but over the past week, it has been suggested Ratcliffe may reduce that figure to allow co-chairmen Joel and Avram Glazer to retain some link, although Ratcliffe's ownership would not be less than 51%.

It is not unusual for bidders trying to secure a smaller stake to pay a higher percentage figure than a purchaser looking to buy the whole thing.

It is understood the investment funds which have offered to buy a minority stake were not given the same deadline as those looking to buy the club.

The Glazer family must now decide how they want to proceed, with the '1958' fan group pushing their planned demonstration around United's Premier League game with Aston Villa with a 'Full Sale Only' message.

Manchester United: Boss Erik ten Hag unsure of summer transfer budget amid Old Trafford takeover saga

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag admits he does not know what his summer transfer budget will be due to ongoing uncertainty over the club's takeover.

Sheikh Jassim and Sir Jim Ratcliffe last week submitted bids to buy varying controlling stakes in the club from the Glazer family and await a decision.

United sit fourth in the Premier League in Ten Hag's first season, are in the FA Cup final and won the Carabao Cup.

"I don't have influence on that," the Dutchman said about available funds.

"I don't know.

"The only thing I know is that Manchester United is one of the biggest clubs, among maybe the two biggest clubs in the world from a fanbase perspective.

"So, I think this club has to compete for the highest in the world, so Champions League, Premier League.

"But in football you need funds to construct squads because the level from your players makes you successful or not."

Erik ten Hag on loss of focus against Brighton as Luke Shaw owns up to handball error that cost Man Utd

Erik ten Hag was left frustrated by Manchester United’s finishing and their lack of focus when they succumbed to a stoppage-time defeat at Brighton.

Alexis Mac Allister's 99th-minute penalty following Luke Shaw's handball earned Roberto De Zerbi's side a 1-0 win at the Amex Stadium to move Brighton up to sixth as United missed the chance to move third. Missing chances was the story of their evening.

"In the first minute we create a great chance but we do not score so we have to be more clinical with the chances that we create in the first half," Ten Hag told Sky Sports.

"We had the chances, clear. Antony, Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Casemiro. One has to go in. But if you cannot win it because you do not take your chances, do not lose it. We gave away a goal, maybe we lose a little bit of focus. That cannot happen.

"Also, we were a little unlucky because it was never a free-kick that the corner was coming from. There were so many bad tackles tonight where there was no whistle and this was nothing, a fair block, and there is a whistle.

"We cannot bounce back [on the night] but that is what we have to do on Sunday."

Shaw owned up to the mistake afterwards, his stray arm making contact with the ball as a late corner came into the box, although he was disappointed that a foul was awarded against him just prior to that for the lightest of touches on Julio Enciso.

De Gea close to new Man Utd deal

David De Gea has agreed terms on a new contract at Man Utd, reports the Daily Telegraph.

The goalkeeper, who is out of contract at Old Trafford this summer, is close to signing a new deal with a lower basic salary but more performance-based incentives, the paper claims.

De Gea has remained Man Utd's No 1 this season but has suffered from a series of gaffes, including for West Ham's winner in their 1-0 defeat at the London Stadium on Sunday.

Man Utd prepare record-breaking Ramos bid

Man Utd are preparing a bid worth up to a potential £100m to bring Benfica striker Goncalo Ramos to Old Trafford, reports the Daily Mirror.

The 21-year-old has netted 24 goals for his club this season and also scored a hat-trick for his country in their 6-1 demolition of Switzerland in the World Cup last 16 in December.

The Mirror claims United will enter discussions over a deal worth between £70m-£100m with the Portuguese side.

Manchester United: Erik ten Hag optimistic over 'quality' signings this summer

Manchester United can attract "quality players" this summer despite uncertainty over the club's ownership, says manager Erik ten Hag.

He said it was difficult to convince players to move to Old Trafford after he took charge at the end of last season.

"I see a big difference in comparison with last year," Ten Hag said.

"Now many players see the project, what's going on, the dynamic and the ambition."

Last summer midfielder Casemiro joined from Real Madrid for £70m and United also signed midfielder Christian Eriksen, forward Antony and defenders Lisandro Martinez and Tyrell Malacia during the summer transfer window.

Netherlands forward Cody Gakpo was heavily linked with a move from PSV Eindhoven in December before moving to Liverpool.

Ten Hag said: "There were a lot of reservations last year, a lot of doubts when we approached players. This year many quality players really want to come."

Qatari banker Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani and Sir Jim Ratcliffe's Ineos Group, who have submitted bids for United, are the two main parties looking to take control.

United's owners, the Glazer family, have yet to name a preferred bidder.

Man Utd moving closer to Champions League return

After beating Aston Villa in their last game at Old Trafford, Manchester United's place in the top four at the end of the season looked a formality as they were seven points above fifth-placed Liverpool with a game in hand.

But the Red Devils have been much less effective on the road than at home this season and the losses to Brighton and West Ham before Saturday's game opened the door for Jurgen Klopp's side to try to sneak in.

Regardless, Manchester United knew three wins from their final four games would seal a top-four spot and against a Wolves side who had recently secured Premier League safety, this will have been a game they would have felt confident of winning.

Oddly, the hosts played much of the game lacking the urgency of a side who still had plenty to play for and while they dominated play and created chances, they did not often work Bentley in the Wolves goal.

Antony, in particular, was wasteful with several chances and often chose to shoot when a team-mate was better placed, although crucially did make the right choice for the opener when he set up Martial for a simple finish.

While it took until the 94th minute for the hosts to get a second, the scoreline was far more reflective of Manchester United's dominance as they put the pressure back on Liverpool in the race for the top four.

What do you put United's poor away form down to?

It is 176 days since the Glazer family said they were considering selling Manchester United.

The process has been protracted, as you might expect for a potential £6bn transaction, one vocal bidder pulled out after the Glazers' decision to go to a third round.

"The bidding is turning into a farce," Finnish entrepreneur Thomas Zilliacus said.

Zilliacus' involvement was not exactly being taken seriously by those involved in the process but his words have resonated.

A deadline of 28 April was set for those third bids. Since then, the talking has continued. Now a fourth bid - nearer to £5bn - has been made by one of the leading candidates and many are starting to wonder, what is going on?

The obvious reason is either no bidder has reached the price the Glazer family are looking for, or the family believe they can get more out of those who have bid.

The Glazers bought the club for £790m in 2005 and have established a current valuation of between £5bn and £6bn.

It is not clear whether the Glazers are unified in their analysis of the situation. Co-chairmen and brothers Joel and Avram have always been more invested in the club personally but Bryan, Kevin, Edward and Darcie are directors too.

Who is still in the running?

The only publicly known bidders are Qatari billionaire Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani and Sir Jim Ratcliffe's Ineos group.

Sheikh Jassim wants to buy 100% of United, while Ineos want the Glazer family's 69% shareholding and are happy to leave the rest of the club on the New York Stock Exchange.

Elliott Investment Group has revised its involvement from purely offering funding to being prepared to buy a minority stake. The US firm has not said exactly how big a 'minority' it is willing to purchase.

What has been offered so far?

Ratcliffe met all three bid deadlines, as did Sheikh Jassim. Initially, Ineos wanted the Glazer ownership, which is around 69%. That has changed and they are now willing to reduce that as long as they stay in control, so 50.01% minimum. That would allow co-chairmen Avram and Joel Glazer to remain investors in the club.

Sheikh Jassim wants 100% control and his fourth bid is nearer to £5bn. There have been other groups, including Elliott Investments and Sixth Street, who have offered to take a minority stake in exchange for funds that could be used to upgrade Old Trafford and the Carrington training ground.

It is thought the Ineos bid still values the club higher but evidently, they would not be buying it all. The view has always been the Glazer family would not settle for less than £5bn, which is twice what Todd Boehly and his consortium spent to buy Chelsea 12 months ago, although they also pledged £1.75bn to improve Stamford Bridge.

Will the deal be done before the start of next season?

It should be - however, unlike the Chelsea sale last year - there is no deadline.

The initial feeling was a sale would be completed by the end of March. Then, even taking delays into account, it was expected a deal would be sorted by the end of the season.

The March deadline has long passed and there is less than a fortnight to the end of the Premier League season. The transfer window then opens on 10 June.

What does it mean for manager Erik ten Hag?

At the very least, it creates uncertainty.

While there are Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules that have to be adhered to - and in their recent second-quarter accounts United's overall debt stood at almost £1bn - Erik ten Hag knows he needs to improve his squad this summer and the players he wants will not be cheap.

United are desperate for a striker and for the quality they require, the fee would be enormous.

They are also in the hunt for a central midfield player and they also come at a price premium - Borussia Dortmund and England midfielder Jude Bellingham, for instance, would command a transfer fee in excess of £100m.

A much cheaper alternative would be Marcel Sabitzer, who joined United on loan from Bayern Munich in January and whose season has been ended by injury.

Ten Hag needs to know if he could for example sign a striker such as England skipper Harry Kane or Napoli's Victor Osimhen, plus an elite midfielder, or if he must set his sights lower.

"It's clear what I want but it's not up to me," he said, earlier this month.

When asked what his transfer budget would be, Ten Hag replied: "I don't know."

What is the feeling among Man Utd fan groups?
There is no consensus about who should buy the club. Some want Sheikh Jassim, others want Ineos, others would prefer the club to run itself through the revenue it generates. What they seem to be united in is a demand for the Glazers to leave.

Former United captain Gary Neville said this week on social media the Glazers were "making it up as they go along" and need to get out "by the end of May". Many fans would argue even that would be too long.

United missed out on hosting Euro 2028 games because it could not guarantee Old Trafford would be ready. That in itself is because of the prevarication around improving the stadium, which is likely to cost £1bn.

The Manchester United Supporters' Trust (MUST) called for the sale process to be "concluded without further delay".

"With Erik ten Hag having made such great progress in his first season, and with the vital summer transfer window a matter of weeks away, the news of these delays and further prolonged uncertainty are of great concern," MUST said in a statement.

"We are also unable to move forward on major investment projects - not least the stadium redevelopment as we remain in limbo.

"We are in dire need of new investment, which undoubtedly requires new ownership."

What is the next stage in the process?

The ball remains in the Glazers' court and Sheikh Jassim's camp wonder if the family even want to sell.

Until his latest bid, the Ineos side had been confident, feeling his offer to reduce what he wants to buy from the entire 69% of the club owned by the Glazers to just over 50% to allow co-chairmen Joel and Avram Glazer to remain can swing the deal.

But there are no certainties.

And if Sheikh Jassim in particular does not complete a deal, could another Qatari attempt to buy into a different Premier League club be successful? That in turn would make it even harder for United to compete for trophies - and cost the Glazers even more in the long-run.

The wait for answers goes on.

Fans in England are too soft. Can you imagine leeches like Glazers in European or South American countries getting away with destroying football clubs? They would be physically kicked out of the club by the fans and ultras. In England, fans do a little protest and they get their hashtags trending, which doesn't achieve anything.

In the past decade, our big rival Liverpool have won the premier league and champions league. Our other big rival Man City have won multiple premier league titles, and are now on the verge of winning their first champions league, and in the process, The Treble.

Glazers have allowed this to happen. Man United as a club have failed over the past decade. By hook or crook, the glazers have to leave.
