Lisandro Martinez: Manchester United move to offer Argentina defender improved contract at Old Trafford

Manchester United want to reward Lisandro Martinez for his fine first season with a new contract.

The club have indicated to the player's representatives they want to offer him fresh terms that will also extend his time at the club beyond June 2027.

Martinez is currently out injured and will miss the rest of the season after suffering a fractured metatarsal in United's 2-2 draw with Sevilla a month ago in the Europa League quarter-finals.

Initial talks have been held about what the new terms should look like - but an offer may not arrive until the club takeover process has been completed.

Martinez has been superb for United since becoming one of Erik ten Hag's first signings from Ajax last summer, and he has been nominated for the club's player of the year award.

He is understood to be delighted with his first season at Old Trafford, having swiftly overcome the early adjustment period to the Premier League after arriving from the Netherlands.

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher has spoken glowingly of Martinez on the Overlap with Gary Neville, stating that he had "been brilliant".

"To be that small and play centre-back, you obviously have to be a special player - a good player," he said. "I didn't think someone that size could cope in the Premier League, but he has.

"He's been a big part of Manchester United's spirit. There was a game I saw a few weeks ago and he was a sub, and someone scored a late goal, and he was right involved in the celebrations."

Phil Jones issued an emotional statement on Friday as he confirmed the long-expected announcement that he would leave Manchester United in the summer after his contract expires.

The defender, United’s longest-serving player who joined from Blackburn Rovers in 2011, has managed only 13 appearances since the start of the 2019-20 season due to chronic knee trouble with his limited appearances a constant source of comment from fans at Old Trafford and beyond.

Jones was entitled to have a testimonial after a decade at the club but aware of the frustrations that has surrounded his continued presence, while not actually being present at first-team training for a year, turned it down reportedly joking that, “apart from my mum and dad, who else would turn up?”

“It’s been very difficult, the last couple of years,” Jones admitted in his farewell to United. “There’s no denying that. There is no hiding away from that. My family have been absolutely instrumental in keeping me on the straight and narrow and keeping me focused, to try to get fit and try to play more.”

“I’ve missed playing football. I missed it,” he admitted. “You grow up playing football and all you want to do is play football. It’s all I’ve known, from such a young age, is to do what you love doing for a living. I’ve been fortunate enough to do that, albeit not as much as I would have liked.

“My time at United has been nothing short of incredible. When I decided to leave Blackburn I was desperate to show everyone what I could do at the highest level. I had a hunger inside me, I was desperate to continue that at a club that could challenge for everything.

“I had offers from a few places, but I was waiting and waiting for the call from United. One day, on holiday, the phone rang and it was Sir Alex. I left my holiday that day; I couldn’t wait to meet him. I couldn’t wait to sign and, most of all, I couldn’t wait to get started. There was only one club where I wanted to continue my journey in the game.

“To wear this shirt, even just once, to wear this badge and represent everyone associated with it, has been an honour. I wish I could have played more. I wish I could have given more to the many squads I played amongst. I will say, from the bottom of my heart, I did everything I could. I did everything the medical team asked of me.”

United on track for Champions League return

With Liverpool trailing for much of their match against Villa, United's win looked like it could be enough to secure Erik ten Hag's side their place in next season's Champions League.

But a late Roberto Firmino equaliser means United must now wait until Thursday at the earliest to ensure the return of Europe's top competition to Old Trafford after a season-long absence.

Meanwhile, as Red Devils fans also await news on who their new owner will be, there can be few complaints from supporters about the job Ten Hag has done.

Winning the Carabao Cup, preparing to face Manchester City in the FA Cup final at Wembley on 3 June and on the brink of securing a top-four place is an impressive feat for the Dutch manager's first foray into the Premier League.

While rumours are circulating about the future of long-serving goalkeeper David de Gea, the result at Anfield also means the Spanish shot-stopper has done enough to secure the Golden Glove, having kept 16 clean sheets this term.

All United's achievements come despite a poor away record - they have only earned eight points from nine top-flight away matches in 2023, and equalled the club record for most Premier League away defeats in a season (eight).

As was the case against Wolves last week, the Red Devils at times lacked urgency against Bournemouth with Dominic Solanke twice going close and David Brooks forcing a fingertip save from De Gea.

Bruno Fernandes saw a shot deflected wide and a second powerful effort saved by Neto but in Rashford's absence United's potency in front of goal was lacking.

Wout Weghorst hit a sweet strike late on but it was punched away by the Bournemouth keeper, meaning the Dutch striker's hunt for a first Premier League goal for the club continues.

Good work by Ten Haag.

A bit of a roller coaster, but ultimately a successful season.

Good job by Ten Hag, lots of ups and memorable (for rival fans) downs but mission accomplished in the end.

Manchester United fear winger Antony has suffered a recurrence of the ankle injury that kept him out of the final two months of last season with Ajax.

The Brazil forward was taken off on a stretcher in tears after an innocuous challenge in the win against Chelsea.

The 23-year-old missed the last eight games of Ajax's 2021-22 campaign after suffering the initial injury in a World Cup qualifier for Brazil in March 2022.

He has scored eight goals since joining United in September for £81m.

Victory against Chelsea secured Erik ten Hag's side a place in next season's Champions League and they face Manchester City in the FA Cup final on 3 June.

We won’t spend close to 300 million, unless the Qataris come in.

Also, why do you want Mount? He is such an overrated player and he has had one good season at Chelsea. We can do better than him.

We can also do better than Sanchez for the goalkeeper spot.

I would be happy with the rest of your signings.

Can they build on this?

Signings needed and a clearout of the dead wood.

Mounts ability on the ball is sound but his deslcion making off the ball and pressing ability is incredible.

Manchester United wrapped up third place in the Premier League as they came from behind to beat Fulham at Old Trafford.

The visitors took the lead early in the first half when Kenny Tete headed in Willian's corner at the near post, and they could have gone 2-0 up but Aleksandar Mitrovic saw his penalty saved by David de Gea.

Alejandro Garnacho curled a shot against the crossbar as Manchester United responded well and were eventually rewarded with the equaliser when Jadon Sancho poked in after Fred had burst into the area.

Bruno Fernandes then put the hosts ahead early in the second half when he was sent clear by Fred and clipped a neat finish beyond Fulham goalkeeper Bernd Leno.

Marcus Rashford saw a shot saved by Leno as Manchester United looked to add a third, while De Gea did well to push away a decent Mitrovic strike late on to secure the victory.

It means the hosts finished third on 75 points while Fulham end the season in 10th place with 52 points.

Manchester United had already made sure of Champions League football next season by beating Chelsea 4-1 on Thursday to cement a top-four finish.

It meant they went into their final home game of the season without the pressure to get a result, but boss Erik ten Hag was nevertheless determined that his side signed off on a high to ensure they go into next weekend's FA Cup final with Manchester City in the best possible shape.

The game showed no signs of being an end of season dead rubber with both sides attacking with determination and desire, but it was Fulham who got the breakthrough from a set-piece.

United did need a great save from De Gea to prevent Fulham from doubling their lead but from then on the hosts were largely in control - bar one or two moments late on - as they fought back for a 15th home win of the season.

Only Manchester City have won more games on home soil and there was a good atmosphere around Old Trafford, even when the home side fell behind. That sense of unity could serve them well as they look to complete a domestic double by adding the FA Cup to their League Cup triumph.

Erik ten Hag: Man Utd boss says club must invest if they want to remain in Premier League's top four

Erik ten Hag says Manchester United must invest if they want to remain in the top four of the Premier League.

Ten Hag has taken United back into the Champions League at the first time of asking, while also winning the Carabao Cup and setting up an FA Cup final against Manchester City.

But the manager was limited to just three loan signings in the January transfer window and, after beating Fulham 2-1 on the final day of the season, United have finished the campaign 14 points behind champions City.

Speaking after the Premier League season came to an end, Ten Hag said: "The club knows that if you want to play top four, if you want to compete for trophies in this tough league, you have to invest, otherwise you won't progress because other clubs will.

"We saw it in the winter. All the clubs around us invested. We didn't and still we made it. So I am really happy and proud of my team."

United were one of just five Premier League sides not to spend in January, and the only one of those clubs that ended the campaign in the European places.

Ten Hag was supported in his first window, with more than £225m spent on six new players, including Antony, who cost £86m when being signed from the manager’s former club Ajax.

Ten Hag’s comments come amid uncertainty over who will be United’s owners going forward, with the Glazer family - who have owned the club since 2005 - entertaining offers.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe, the founder of Ineos, and Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad al-Thani, the Qatari businessman, are the two parties keen on completing a takeover, which could cost more than £5bn.

Speaking to Sky Sports earlier this week, Ten Hag said United would be able to move for their key transfer targets this summer if there was no change in the ownership situation.

Ten Hag said: "I think so. I came in here [at the end of] last season and we talked about what can we do in the squad, what can we do in transfers.

"Last year, the club confirmed they can do. So, for me, I don't think anything changed and yes, in this summer period we can do the same."

Diogo Dalot has signed a new five-year deal with Manchester United.

The Portugal full-back's contract has been extended to June 2028, with an option for a further year.

Dalot, 24, moved to Old Trafford from Porto in 2018 and has made 107 appearances for the club.

"As a group of players, we all feel like we are at the start of a special journey right now...everyone is intensely focused on preparations for the FA Cup final," he said.

Portugal international Dalot, who has made 11 senior appearances for his country, initially struggled to force his way into the United first team, but has played 42 matches in all competitions this season under Erik ten Hag.

He started the League Cup final win over Newcastle in February, helping United land a first trophy since 2017, and then played the full 120 minutes of their FA Cup semi-final victory over Brighton on penalties.

United face Manchester City in the FA Cup final at Wembley on Saturday as they bid to add a second piece of silverware in Ten Hag's first season in charge, having finished third in the Premier League to secure Champions League qualification.

Dalot added: "Playing for Manchester United is one of the highest honours that you can have in football.

"We have shared some fantastic moments over the past five years and I've grown so much - and my passion for this incredible club has only increased since the day that I joined.

"I can assure you that I will dedicate myself relentlessly to helping this group to achieve its aims and make the fans proud of this team."

United triggered an extension to his previous deal in December, following a series of standout performances for Portugal at the Qatar World Cup.

United's football director John Murtough added: "Diogo is an excellent defender with a great combination of pace, strength and versatility.

"He has consistently developed, improving year-on-year since joining the club in 2018."

Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes feels he owes manager Erik ten Hag for standing by him after a 7-0 humiliation at Liverpool in March.

Fernandes attracted huge criticism, from ex-United captain Gary Neville and others, for his conduct that day.

Former Premier League striker Chris Sutton said after the match that the Portugal international should not captain United again.

Ten Hag rejected the demands and called the 28-year-old "an inspiration".

He is set to lead United out for Saturday's FA Cup final against Manchester City at Wembley with club captain Harry Maguire likely to be on the bench.

"I'm aware that he's really happy with the way I train, the way I play, the way I show my emotions and the way I show my passion for the game," said Fernandes.

"He knows I care. That's why probably sometimes it makes you do some things that you should not do.

"But I will never do anything to make the team look bad, make my team-mates look bad, or something that is not good for the team. He knows that, so that's why it protects me.

"I think that's good because he shows you the respect, he shows you the protection, but always with the demands behind that because obviously when you protect someone you want them to give you some back, so he can have his reasons to protect you."

Fernandes had a testing day at Anfield; with once incident late in the match where he appeared to make contact with an assistant referee, although he was not charged.

Ten Hag has supported the midfielder, but does not give him a free pass.

In a throwback to Sir Alex Ferguson's days, there have been occasions when Ten Hag has demanded to see the 28-year-old to express his displeasure - but the manager maintains trust by not disclosing the details of those discussions.

Fernandes said: "He has called me to his office two or three times and said 'look, we have to change this, we have to change this, I think you could do it in a different way'. We had many conversations this season."

Manchester United have made an approach to Chelsea over the potential signing of midfielder Mason Mount. No formal offer has been made.

'Man Utd to bid £50m for Mount'

Manchester United will bid £50m for Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount this month, reports The Telegraph.

Mount, who has one year left on his deal at Chelsea, dodged questions from Sky Sports about his future at the Spanish Grand Prix on Sunday.

The report also adds that United will push for Tottenham striker Harry Kane, but believe a deal is "unlikely".

Also on the transfer agenda, reports The Telegraph, is a left-winger and another midfielder alongside Mount.

Despite criticism of David De Gea, whose deal is up in the summer, the report states United will not spend significant money on a goalkeeper this summer.

An announcement about De Gea's new deal is expected shortly.

Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani made a fifth bid to buy Manchester United earlier this week, according to a source close to the Qatari banker.

This will be Sheikh Jassim's final bid, and after Friday he will no longer engage with the process.

The bid is for 100% of the club, will clear United's debt and has a separate fund for the club and local community.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe's Ineos Group are the other main party trying to buy the Premier League club.

Figures in March showed United owed £969.6m through a combination of gross debt, bank borrowings and outstanding transfer fees with associated payments.

The Glazer family, who currently own the club, announced in November they were considering selling Manchester United as they "explore strategic alternatives".

Although there has been no response from the Glazer family since the last bid deadline on 28 April, there had been increasing confidence in the Ineos camp in May that their efforts to buy United would be successful.

It is understood one of Ratcliffe's suggestions has been to lower the percentage of United he wanted to buy, from an initial 69% for all the Glazer stake to just over 50%, which would allow co-chairmen Joel and Avram Glazer to retain some involvement.

However, there has been no indication when the Glazer family will make a decision over the future direction of United.

They bought the club for £790m in 2005 and have established a valuation of between £5bn and £6bn for it.

Osimhen price tag lowered amid Man Utd interest

Napoli will now accept bids of €120m (£103m) for star striker Victor Osimhen according to today's Gazzetta dello Sport.

Osimhen is among the names Man Utd are considering to fill their striker gap since the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo last year.

Previously, it had been reported Napoli would only accept offers of €150m (£129m) or more for the Nigerian forward.

The 24-year-old said earlier this season it was his dream to play in the Premier League. He scored 31 goals in 39 games in all competitions for Napoli this season.

Manchester United's owners spoke to Paris St-Germain chairman Nasser Al-Khelaifi a month ago in an effort to get Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani to increase his bid for the club.

BBC Sport has been told it was instigated by the Glazers, who have known Qatari Al-Khelaifi for years.

Sheikh Jassim and Jim Ratcliffe's Ineos Group are competing to buy the club.

The Qatari banker made a fifth offer this week with a warning he would not engage with the process beyond Friday.

It is privately being claimed the conversation did not work as the bid for a full takeover was not increased.

It has been reported Al-Khelaifi has also met with the Raine Group, which is handling the sales process, although this is being denied by a source close to the PSG chairman.

Those same sources are also adamant Al-Khelaifi has no role, either officially or unofficially, in United and the bid is completely separate to PSG, amid suggestions other Premier League clubs want any sale to Sheikh Jassim fully investigated due to a feeling it would be centrally funded from Qatar.

Concerns have previously been expressed around potential conflicts of interest with Al-Khelaifi's club role, and his status as chairman of the influential European Clubs' Association and his close relationship with Uefa president Aleksander Ceferin.

Sources close to Sheikh Jassim have repeatedly claimed his proposed purchase is being made in a private capacity.

It has been established Al-Khelaifi has spoken to Sheikh Jassim to offer his experiences around running a major European club.

It is not expected Sheikh Jassim will make any statement around the self-imposed Friday deadline and he is not intending to withdraw his bid.

Qatar’s Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani has reportedly acquired Man Utd.

Sheikh Jassim was bidding for the Premier League against British billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

The Chairman of Qatar Islamic Bank made his 5th and final offer to purchase the 20-time English champions last week.

Sources reveal that Man Utd’s current owners, the Glazers, have chosen Sheikh Jassim’s bid as their preferred option, according to Al-Watan newspaper.

Al-Watan further announced on Twitter that the takeover bid was a “success,” with an official announcement expected soon.

While the exact valuation details have not yet been disclosed, a report by UK’s The Guardian said that Sheikh Jassim’s final bid, submitted on June 7, amounted to £5.5 billion.

This offer includes the clearance of a £1 billion debt, along with the establishment of a dedicated fund for the club and its surrounding community, the report said.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe, the head of Ineos group and a devoted Man Utd supporter since childhood, had aspired to acquire approximately 60 percent ownership of the club.

His proposal included a provision allowing the Glazers to retain their positions for a defined period before a planned buyout.

The Glazer family had initially valued the club at £6 billion when it was put up for sale.

Al-Watan’s report indicating an imminent decision by the Glazers will finally bring an end to one of the most extended takeover in recent football history.

In November, the US-based Glazer announced that the board was exploring various strategic alternatives for the future, including a potential complete sale of the club.

Mason Mount: Chelsea reject Man Utd's £40m bid for England midfielder

Manchester United have had a £40m bid for Chelsea's Mason Mount turned down.

United manager Erik ten Hag has identified Mount, 24, as someone who can bolster his attacking options.

However, given the England international has only a year left on his contract, United do not feel Chelsea's £70m valuation is realistic.

The Old Trafford outfit are likely to make another offer for the attacking midfielder but are mindful of their overall transfer budget this summer.

For the same reason, it is felt to be highly unlikely that United will sign England striker Harry Kane, 29, from Tottenham for £100m.

Ten Hag has prioritised a new striker this summer, but Mount's ability to operate in advanced positions is understood to have made him a target.

Negotiations around the potential sale of Manchester United are still taking place with multiple parties.

Reuters reported on Thursday that United were negotiating exclusivity with Qatari banker Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani.

It follows growing speculation Sheikh Jassim's bid is likely to succeed.

However, sources have told BBC Sport exclusivity had not been granted and talks were continuing with interested parties.

At the start of this week, reports from Qatar claimed Sheikh Jassim was going to be named United's new owner, but the publication involved later issued a clarification.

However, United's share price, which had risen sharply, did not drop back fully, suggesting a belief among investors Sheikh Jassim's attempt to buy 100% of the club was going to be successful.

Earlier this month, Sheikh Jassim lodged his fifth bid for United, which remains on the table despite suggestions he would not engage with the process beyond 9 June.

Sheikh Jassim is competing with Sir Jim Ratcliffe's Ineos Group in trying to buy the Premier League club.

Ratcliffe and Ineos are willing to secure a majority stake, which would allow current owners the Glazer family to retain representation in some capacity.

The Glazers announced in November they were considering selling United as they "explore strategic alternatives".

Luke Shaw 'would love' England team-mates Harry Kane and Declan Rice to join him at Man Utd

Luke Shaw has been selling Manchester United to his England team-mates and would welcome Harry Kane and Declan Rice to the club "in a heartbeat".

Monday's Euro 2024 qualifier against North Macedonia is being played at United's home ground Old Trafford.

Tottenham striker Kane and West Ham midfielder Rice are said to be summer transfer targets for the Red Devils.

"I would love a few of them to join - I am not going to lie," said United defender Shaw, 27.

"I am speaking to them, telling them how good Manchester is, because I know their qualities.

"I know they are world-class players and they would be a massive help to us but I can only say so much. It is up to the club and whatever they decide, so we have to go from there.

"It is not normally discussed but, because of the time of the season and what is going on, there is a lot of talk, a lot of banter."

England have been preparing at United's Carrington training base and Shaw posted pictures on social media of him beside Kane, 29, and Rice, 24, with the caption "Carrington tour".

"I was half joking, it is a bit of both," said Shaw. "But if it was down to me, I would take them in a heartbeat.

"Hopefully they like it and can get used to it," he joked.

Striker Marcus Rashford, 25, is set to play on his home ground after scoring a career-best tally of 30 goals for United last season.

"I think when he has had chances this season, you expect him to score," said England boss Gareth Southgate. "Maybe in previous seasons that was a little bit less of a certainty.

"I would say the goal tally is big progress for him. I still think he's better from the left than as a [number] nine but he's definitely made progress as a nine this year and had a bigger impact."

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag wants Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana to replace David de Gea, according to the Daily Mirror.

Manchester United are 'waiting for the right time' to make a bid for Napoli striker Victor Osimhen, according to reports in Italy cited by the Daily Express.

Manchester United are growing in optimism that Marcus Rashford will sign a new contract.

Manchester United have had a second bid - worth up to £50m - for Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount rejected.

Mount, 24, is a top target for United manager Erik ten Hag as he looks to strengthen his side following their qualification for next season's Champions League.

Chelsea spent £600m last season and need to sell players before 30 June to ease Financial Fair Play (FFP) worries.

The Blues are understood to value Mount at about £70m.

On Wednesday, Arsenal agreed a £65m deal to sign Mount's Chelsea team-mate Kai Havertz, while Manchester City closed in on signing midfielder Mateo Kovacic from Chelsea for £30m.

Mount, who has scored 33 goals in 195 appearances for Chelsea since making his debut in 2019, missed the end of the domestic season with injury as the Blues came 12th - their lowest finish for more than 25 years.

He won the Champions League in 2021 with Chelsea and started their 1-0 win over Manchester City in the final. He also won the Fifa Club World Cup and Uefa Super Cup with the Blues.

He has been capped 36 times by England, scoring five goals, and was part of Gareth Southgate's squad for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Mount came through Chelsea's academy before joining Vitesse on loan for the 2017-18 season, scoring nine goals in 29 Eredivisie appearances.

The following campaign he was loaned to Derby County, scoring eight goals in 35 Championship games under manager Frank Lampard as the Rams suffered a 2-1 defeat by Aston Villa in the play-off final.

Upon his return to Chelsea in 2019, Mount made his breakthrough under the newly appointed Lampard and became a key player at Stamford Bridge.

Last month Chelsea appointed former Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino as their new manager, replacing interim boss Lampard who took over after Graham Potter was sacked.

I don't understand why we are so hell bent on signing Mason Mount. He is such an average player.

Manchester United are set to make a third bid of about £55m for Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount.

The Old Trafford club will also warn they will walk away from negotiations with the Blues if the offer is not accepted.

Chelsea are thought to value the England international at £70m.

However, United feel that figure is excessive as Mount only has a year left on his contract and talks about an extension have stalled.

United have already had bids worth up to £40m and £50m for Mount rejected by Chelsea.

Mason Mount: Chelsea reject Manchester United's third bid of £55m for England midfielder

Chelsea have rejected Manchester United's third bid worth £55m for midfielder Mason Mount.

Chelsea have made a counter-proposal of £58m plus £7m in add-ons, and offered to meet United in person to try and come to a positive resolution.

England international Mount has one year left on his existing contract at Stamford Bridge and is understood to be keen on a move to Erik ten Hag's side.

Sky Sports News understands United are actively looking at alternative targets and it was suggested they would not increase their £55m offer after their third bid went in.

It was also understood United were open to negotiating if they received a positive response from Chelsea.

United must now decide if that response is positive enough to bring them back to the table or walk away and pursue alternative targets.

United retain an interest in West Ham captain Declan Rice and have discussed how possible it would be to sanction a deal.

Man City and Arsenal are also interested in Rice, with Sky in Italy reporting City are prepared to pay £75m + £15m in bonuses payable across two years for the midfielder. Reporter Gianluca Di Marzio added on Friday that City have entered 'advanced talks' to sign Rice ahead of long-time suitors Arsenal.

Due to Financial Fair Play rules, it is unlikely United could spend a huge portion of their budget on one player - especially as they have other areas they want to strengthen.

For that reason, they are looking at a number of other options in midfield. Potential sales of players would, however, increase their spending power.

Mason Mount: Manchester United to focus on other targets after Chelsea reject third bid of £55m for midfielder

Manchester United are understood to be re-focusing on other targets as there is an "impasse" in their pursuit of Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount.

Sky Sports has been told their latest offer worth £55m for Mount remains on the table, which Chelsea rejected on Friday night.

United retain an interest in Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo - among other players.

Like always we are bottling the window.
We just needed to get Mount Caicedo Onana Hojlund and Min-Jae, then get Kane for 40m in January and we could have a serious title push.
We have players that can be sold to raise funds to do this but this club is so **** at transfers it's unreal.
Maguire Mctominay VdB Bailly Telles Williams Henderson all should be gone in this window and it raises 120m to fund the above.

How on earth can Chelsea be ahead in the race for Caicedo.
We have champions league and he supported united growing up

'Man Utd back out of De Gea agreement despite signed contract extension'

David De Gea signed a contract extension with Manchester United only for the club to back out of the agreed proposal, according to The Athletic.

The report claims the 32-year-old agreed to a drastic reduction on his current £375,000 per week wages, but the club did not sign the contract and have now submitted a new proposal to De Gea with an even lower salary.

Sky Sports News understands the Spaniard's future at United remains "in the balance".

De Gea will be out of contract next week and is on United's released list while talks over a new deal continue.

It is understood the goalkeeper and United are considering their options.

United have made initial contacts with Inter Milan over Andre Onana, and have looked at Brentford's David Raya and Porto's Diogo Costa.

While boss Ten Hag has publicly backed De Gea, he cannot guarantee he will be No 1 next season if he was to stay.

Making a total mess of this window.
AGAIN
Need to start moving players on to raise funds
Hopefully we stumble on the right solutions like last season, but that cost us a good 9 points

Onana Caicedo Hojlund with another midfielder would be good.
Go back in for Kane in January

Manchester United have agreed a deal to sign England midfielder Mason Mount from Chelsea on a five-year contract for £55m, plus £5m in add-ons.

Mount, 24, will be Erik ten Hag's first signing of the summer as he looks to strengthen his side following United's qualification for next season's Champions League.

Chelsea spent £600m last season and needed to sell before 30 June to ease Financial Fair Play concerns.

Mount joined Chelsea aged six.

Chelsea had rejected United's first three bids but talks between the two clubs resumed this week to resolve the impasse.

It is understood Chelsea preferred not to lose Mount but were unable to successfully negotiate a new contract with his deal set to expire next year.

Mount, who has scored 33 goals in 195 appearances for Chelsea since making his senior debut in 2019, missed the end of the domestic season with injury as the Blues came 12th - their lowest finish for more than 25 years.

Mason Mount: What will the England midfielder bring to Manchester United?
United finished third in the Premier League and while Ten Hag has prioritised a new striker this summer, Mount's ability to operate in advanced positions is understood to have made him an attractive option for the club.

Mount won the Champions League in 2021 with Chelsea and started during the side's 1-0 win over Manchester City in the final.

The following campaign he was loaned to Derby County, scoring eight goals 35 Championship games under manager Frank Lampard as the Rams suffered a 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa in the play-off final.

Upon his return to Chelsea in 2019, Mount made his breakthrough under the newly-appointed Lampard and became a key player at Stamford Bridge.

Last month Chelsea appointed former Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino as their new manager, replacing interim boss Lampard who had taken over following the sacking of Graham Potter.

David De Gea: Man Utd expected to resume contract talks after his wedding as Andre Onana transfer rumours swirl

Manchester United are expected to resume talks with David De Gea about a new contract after his wedding this weekend.

De Gea's contract expires on Friday June 30 at midnight but the 32-year-old is enjoying private time with his family in Spain and United do not want to interrupt that.

United, it is thought, will continue face-to-face discussions with De Gea in due course.

De Gea, who joined Man Utd from Atletico Madrid in 2011, has made 545 appearances since moving to Old Trafford and broke the club's clean sheets record earlier this season, surpassing Peter Schmeichel.

The Spaniard has endured a tough season with multiple high-profile errors and growing scrutiny on his shortcomings in possession, but still managed to claim the Premier League's Golden Glove award.

United have a variety of goalkeeping options for next season, even if talks with De Gea break down, with Dean Henderson returning from his loan at Nottingham Forest and Tom Heaton's contract extended.

Sky in Italy are reporting that United are expected to make a move for Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana, who worked with Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag at Ajax previously.
