Think Australia will go with 3 pacers and a spinner with Maxwell/Marsh/Faulkner as fifth bowler.

This will be their line up most probably

Warner
Rodgers
Hughes/Doolan
Clarke
Smith
Maxwell/Faulkner/Marsh
Haddin
Johnson
Siddle
Starch/Hilfenhaus
Lyon

And Pakistan most probable

Shahzad
Hafeez
Azhar
Younus
Misbah
Asad
Sarfraz
Zulfiqar
Rehman/Raza
Talha
Adil/Rahat

I know, but the last dynamic player we had was Akmal but sadly lost his brain along the way.

Now we only see two paces, Misbah or Afridi.

It's about intent.

Even in tests or 4 day match intent should be to score not to block every ball. And a SR of 25-30 even in First class match doesn't justice to one's abilities as a cricketer.

they can score as a free-flow batsman only when u can guarantee them a place in the side even after few failures.... but in reality fans pounce on them for just one match or one series failure.... do u know how much raina, yuvraj, kohli had faced before actually they shine and also includes ponting and hayden they only avg 30 and 20s for their first 20-25 games...but ended up avg 50s and 40+... it is about finding a talent and giving them continuous run despite of their poor run of form,

pak cant afford to do this just because their seniors do have a poor run of form, playing for 5 years and still do the same mistake and get out the same way and they too have technical flaws and also avg in the mid 30s...

they are playing a test match man... if singles are on offer they will take.... ppl too obsessed with SR...no harm if they didnt rotate strike..

If you rotate strike, you will score a lot more runs. Even in this format, you need to rotate strike and keep S/R of atleast 35. 40-50 is ideal.

I don't have issues with strike rates of 30's considering the attack and the circumstances.

A test match innings should have a Run Rate of at least 3! This means a S/R of 50.
25 is too low even by Test match standards...

List A average can tell your capabilities in most cases. On top of his good record, he has a very good technique, good against pace/spin, plays the short ball well, making him a versatile player.
Ok Hafeez last went to AU in 2005, now tell me what he averages in SA/ENG in 2013. He averages 6 in SA and 12 in ENG. If he was in the middle order, i'm certain those averages would be higher. I'm not even going to bother if you reject the facts.

Hafeez averages 24 in england and shafiq 23. I dont know what we are trying to imply.

Shafiq has average of 3 in sa

30 is ok for your first 50-70 balls, after that, you should look to amp it up to at least 50-60.

Yes, if you are a regular selection.
When it's your first match against test match standard bowling and no easy RB's and you are on the fringes of selection it is pragmatic to be a little more deliberate.

Nah

This is most likely

1. Warner/Hughes
2. Rogers
3. Doolan
4. Clarke*/Maxwell
5. Smith
6. Marsh/Faulkner
7. Haddin+
8. O'Keefe
9. Johnson
10. Siddle/Starc
11. Lyon

The first three splits are due to fitness, Siddle and Starc is line ball

I'm just saying Hafeez should be in the middle order, while Shafiq should be given preference at #3 since that is his batting position. Hafeez needs to be tried as a #4 since he can't play the moving ball and will be a walking wicket in the WC if he bats in the top 3. The average's I'm giving are at #3.
Shafiq has played 1 ODI in SA

Shafiq has played 2.. and he scored more at number 4.. 5 runs.

3 is hafeezs position considering his recent form at 3.. averages 62 in last 10 innings. It would be foolish to change his position at the moment.

Ok 2, big difference! Scored 2 more runs at 3

Hafeez averages 62 including minnows on flat SC phattas in Bangladesh and UAE. It would be foolish to bat him in the top 3 outside of the SC with his technique against anything moving. Even Farhat averages 45 in ODIs in home conditions, do you want him back too?

130/4 again ... these so called talented youngsters why the hack they dont value their wicket. Getting out after settling down is just as bad as getting out early...

Hafeez should be playing at 5-6. That is his best position.Has the potential to average 40 with the bat there. His only weakness in the new ball, apart from that he has been very good since his return.

But Shafiq also doesn't seem to be the answer at all. In-fact going on their current form, I rather trust Hafeez at three than Shafiq. Shafiq maybe good for a 50 odd chasing 230 but apart from that he is not going to do much.

And shafiq cant even do it in home conditions let alone away.

he is much better than his cousins...i do doubt whether u.akmal has ever faced 130 balls in one innings...i dont think so...
Facing 130 balls is also not enough in test cricket. Look at the way he got out.. he doesnt care about his wicket his teams position... bas isne toh chakka marna hai!!!

Agree with the first bit :steyn

Shafiq will turn out really good if you let give him some slack at #3. He has had no set batting position for the past few years and hasn't played more than 3-4 ODIs on the trot. Out of all the ODIs Pakistan has played in the last 4/5 years, Shafiq has only batted at 3 in 20% of them. If he had batted at 3 for even 60% of them, he would've delivered by now.

wow 40 odd runs in a side game and he is already better than Umar Akmal. Coming to your question, yes he did. 160 balls in his very first inning.

Do you want Hafeez against Johnno with the new ball?

Who is opening with Shehzad?

Who are those people?

He averages only 27 in fc.

Exactly. Babar Azam doesn't even have a FC century yet. He has performed heavily in LA and T20, but that does not warrant a place in the 4 day team. Sami Aslam should have played ahead of him, he was in the 19 man probables and has actually performed in FC cricket.

after that five years have passed... when will be his next ... better ask him....

It kind of annoys me how Lyon always performs horribly at anything below international level.

always makes me think he's out of form.

israrullah a big mug with the bat... watch his wicket.... no footwork, just throwing his bat, another hack like sharjeel goo that he was exposed now...

Finally someone positive against O'Keefe! Shouldn't get bogged down against him, otherwise.... :herath

No substitute for watching the game. Hafeez should be nowhere near the test team home or away if he can't bowl.
Shafiq - we can keep recycling the numbers again and again, I saw a lot of thus before his selection for the one days against oz - is the superior batsman will bat better, vand will score more.

No
The one that doesn't turn and the one that doesn't turn in the other direction.

there is a subtle difference.

But seriously O'Keefe gets all his success from changing angles and from killing the runrate and thus forcing batting mistakes.

Younis will handle him with ease but I'm not sure about some of the others

Talking about ODI's here.

No, I don't want Hafeez opening with Shehzad. He is not likely to last long, but then again the other are not going to either.. If they are preparing rank tuners, they I might give him a go.The ball won't swing much and Hafeez is good against the short stuff.Plus his off-spin will come into play big time.

Or a better option might be to bat him at seven and go with three spinner. Shan/Azhar can open with Shehzad and Haris can slot in at three.

Yeah Younis should handle him, Shafiq seems to be fine too looking at the scorecard, but will reserve my judgement. I reckon Sarfraz wouldn't have too much trouble either. The rest will be negative against him as soon as they find out he has 'variations', and will end up gifting 10 wickets.

It's amazing watching some shield batsmen against him. Despite playing him year in year out they still continually fall into the trap of thinking he can do more than he actually can and then get out playing a shot to a delivery that didn't exist

It's all in the head :yk
I think the Pakistan batsmen will think he has a bag of tricks to play on them, and will do the same.

What's so impressive about Barbar knock? a pathetic strike rate even by test match standards. 40 runs at 30 per 100 balls is only very impressive from a tail-ender. For a top and middle order batsman it shows you are struggling like it or not. Its easy to leave balls out and leaving balls out doesn't prove your quality of batting. Even I can face that many balls without even scoring 1 by leaving and blocking.

Babar shouldn't have been picked ahead of Sami. Babar has a FC average of 27. Sami averages 40...

At some point (around now actually) Haris Sohail needs to start pushing that runrate up

If what you say about him is true,Younus and Sarfraz are going to eat him alive.Misbah will be Misbah, meaning you will get a sudden six after 30 odd dots. And Azhar Ali will even make Warner look like the second coming of Warne.

Hilfenhaus to Haris Sohail, FOUR, driven firmly into the ground through the cover region

:14:

Good to see Haris taking on Hilfenhaus.

Agree

For what he should push the run rate up ?? Can u please explain ?? Why should he sacrifice his wicket for scoring quickly??

So, who is going to partner Shehzad??

And what about the no.3 position?? I don't think Azhar is good enough.

40 balls is enough to bat yourself in.
Going at 30-40 strike rate will still be fine at this point but low 20s is no longer acceptable and just builds pressure on your partner and yourself.

worried about his place im guessing, otherwise I would say he has more shots than anyone else in the team. Similar case with Babar Azam, he can be a very pacy player, but like his Akmal cousins has an issue with throwing it away sometimes

Yeah neither do I. Personally I would have..

1.)Shehzad
2.)Opener?
3.)Younis
4.)Haris
5.)Shafiq
6.)Misbah
7.)Sarfraz (wk)

If Hafeez is fit, we will probably see him opening. He gives us a much needed 5th bowling option, but is a liability as an opener. Can anyone else in this lineup open? If so, that would be great, it would mean Hafeez can bat lower down the order.

Haris is someone who has a very good record, and technically he is pretty good too. But he has always been ignored by the selectors, mostly based on fitness issues. He's been included in the 19 man probable squad, but he'll probably need a good performance here to get him into the 15 maybe into playing XI, so he's under a bit of pressure and will be watchful. Think Shafiq will have to be the aggressor between the two.

I dont think 30 40 ball is enough for a player who playing after a injury or break. Its a practice match bro winning or loosing or draw doesnt matter. Haaris needs to on the pitch for as long as possible. Middeling the ball is more important. The more he stay on the pitch the different bowlers he will face.

Run rate high krne ke chakkar mein babar gaya na!!

That's the top 7, I'd go with. If Hafeez is fit, he'll open with Shehzad, as he'll give us an as advantage with the ball as well. Hafeez isn't that bad in SC, I know some ppl won't want him to open, but other spots are occupied. If Hafeez isn't fit, it'll be a toss-up between Sami Aslam, Shan Masood & Azhar Ali. I think Shan will miss out until he does something extraordinary in the 2nd innings of the warm-up, and Azhar will probably be picked over Sami, since he's more 'experienced'.
