Australia v Pakistan | 3rd Test | Sydney | Jan 3-7, 2017 | Day 1

Pakistani bowling is at an all time low- or close to it

Inzamam should be relieved of his position. How have the selection committee made no changes after 2-3 poor series?!

Ah the customary drop catch

He has created a couple of chances, when he was getting hammered by warner he induced an edge but there were only 2 slips and now this drop; people need to give him a break did they seriously expect Khan to take a 5fer or perform at his best in the confines of his abilities which is to hold an end something which people have vilified Rahat off and advocated how oh Imran would hold the end but he's not super human, Imran toured the UK, UAE and then finally got to play hist 1st test vs NZ in a 4 men attack and then 4 weeks later he gets to play his first Test in AUS the final of the series while others have failed in our attack despite being given a long rope and all the exposure

Uncovered pitches with no helmets or chest and arm protection

Bull sh!t - myth created by English snob media, who is famous to blow their trumpet.

Undercover wickets is nothing but a wicket that's kept open in night - it's not that they rolled the wicket in 5 days only once - every day, 10 minute roller was used before start of play & start of every innings. Only time, it was difficult is when it rained; after that at restart, few overs were difficult to negotiate on drying wickets. But, even modern times, we have cricket played under drizzle & then when it's drying. Modern batsmen has better overall technique & reflex hence they can negotiate that far far better. Also, no old cricket pundit will tell one thing - if you keep wicket open, it actually bonds the surface from over night dew - some of the wickets that we see in IND these days would have been damn soggy roads if every night it's kept open under over night dew, then it's rolled into the surface with heavy roller. Similarly, the cracks that we see in AUS wickets won't be there.

It has definitely some difficulty, but it was not because of superior batting technique that 600, 700+ scores were possible on those wickets. My problem is, I never take words from it's face value - I analyzed over 100 Tests matches & impact of uncovered myth - it's not all dark for batsmen then. There is a particular type of bowler who were successful on "sticky dogs", - bowlers like O'Reilley, Grimmet, Verity, Chuck Smith & few others I can name (similar to Mustafiz type - he would have taken 10 wicket every match those days on drying wickets); but, hardly any pacers were threatening on those sluggish wickets - you can check Tate, Larwood, Voce, Lindwall or Bedsar's figures on such condition. Only thing that UC wickets brought was unpredictability in the game - you could see 7/26 from 450/3 or opposite. Compared to that facing Kumble on Day 5 wickets in India is twice difficult, or facing WW with reversing the ball at 145KM is not even comparable - those 10 wickets won't last even opening spell, with their technique. You can watch footage of some "golden days'" cricket, - then read the articles on cricket of those days - if you really struggling to find something to laugh at desperately.

Coming to protective gears - I don't think, modern batsmen will need any if they face PHAST bowlers bowling with WK standing 12 steps behind - those days wind, typhoon, storm ... used to blow at 120KM. Body line was absolutely nothing - Poms had a PHAST bowler, who could lift it at chest height bowling short & Jardin took the advantage of the then rule - which was, you can put more than 2 fielders behind leg umpire - so he put a leg slip, leg gully, long leg & short leg & his PHAST Man ran round the wicket to bowl at most 135km with effort balls & I am generous here - incompetence of the then batsman including Bradman was that they couldn't hook, neither was sharp enough to avoid the ball - hence body line. I am sure these guys would have peed & pooed in their undies looking at Lloyd's charges, even if they were put in middle aged knight's armor.

I actually think, this protective gears are harmful to the game - as Viv said, he didn't wear the helmet because it would have created false security in his game. These days, everything is hyper for media mockery, otherwise injury or even death is not uncommon in sports - it's part of professional hazard. Take baseball - now they are pitching even at 170km speed from 18 yards - still baseball hitters are wearing almost similar protective gears like 130 years back. Cricketers are Pros - they are paid good money for their job, no point crying if it has some pain associated - Yanks are not cry baby like the Brits, hence no one bothers if an incompetent pro is hurt for this lack of skills within the rule of the game.

pathetic bowling by yasir shah...............no swing or spin at all. so many full tosses. so depressiing

I've watched almost every single ball of the series live but I reckon I might just go to bed.

4 weeks later he gets to play his first Test in AUS the final of the series while others have failed in our attack despite being given a long rope and all the exposure

Son, you need to choose your next words VERY carefully...

Yeah, that's true. Not easy to come into the side and bowl to Warner on a flat deck. Just tuned in a little while ago so missed the first session, thankfully. :))

Yasir has been disappointing yet again man, I know it's the first day but he should at least control the run rate. His line and length seems all over the place, and the field placing looks better too so no excuse for him really.

:))) Don't watch it but I do feel for him irrespective of what people say with regards to his ability I'd criticise him just as much as the others if he had been playing all this time and performing just as bad but I expect him to bowl better in the 2nd innings, astagfirullah we don't what the suwaah shaythaan to lose his smile we need the devious RD.

The attack as a whole has been dreadful minus The Destroyer, I expected better from them after the England series; only magic can help pak win this Test. Am going to sacrifice the goat I adopted after disowning Aman

IK, Irfan Khan Pathan. Maybe should have gone with IP. But those who are on the bench can't win you matches.

IP lost his way. and he bowled at 72 mph. Bhuvi's a superior version of him. Sharma at 28 is in his prime. He's got that bounce, just enough shape and control to offer something different. Yadav is the wild card, looks to be improving with each series. Shami IMO will end his career as the finest Indian pacer ever.

I don't think they have to win matches. They just have to be good enough so they are not the limiting factor abroad anymore. We have our spinning all-arounders(we can play both Ashwin and Jadeja maybe because of the control Jadeja offers), and we have a new world-class top order forming. world domination is in our sights for the first time.

It's interesting that Pakistan want to resume cricket ties with us at this point. Kha jayenge hum inko.

Top post.

We saw the same where pre-war English footballers were hyped as ATGs for a very long time.

As video evidence has since shown, the game was the played at walking pace.

But Inzi the revolutionary dropped him from ODIs so surely he's more suited to Tests then?

He is basically given his P45 (termination letter) - poor guy, with little lobby, comes from remote corner of the country - first lost 6/7 best years of career, now misses out to Wahab & Rahat.

Yes, Stanley Mathews would have dribbled past whole world to score from his own box & win the WC on his own - then Poms went to Brazil & faced USA .......

Lmaoo the sacrifice might be working already, IK seems to have found his line and we aren't getting hammered anymore. :))

Lovely comment on ABC Radio by Neil Harvey. (Remember my recent Dacca POTW?)

The unused (grassy) pitch parallel to this one is what all SCG pitches used to start off as. An extra half-inch of bright green grass compared with now.

Sod this, I'm off to bed. Recording it all so I'll catch up with the rest of the days play later.

Night chaps, let's hope I dream of something better than this bowling performance :rahat :rahat1

Although Wahab just came into the attack, I might stick around for an over or two.

I thought, whole morning you were saying this one & the 2010 one was similar grassy ........

By modern Aussie standards, this summer goes:

Adelaide 4 mm
Brisbane 2 mm
Sydney, Hobart, Perth 1 mm
Melbourne 0.5 mm

Overcast overhead now. Misbah should bring on Amir from one end.

If he's going to have that man deep at long-on then Misbah needs to be standing closer at midwicket in case the ball turns and gets the inside edge of a chipped on-drive

He has Azhar for that ...... I still don't understand why Asghar wasn't played here - it only makes life for Zulfi easier - he is going to WI, for his experience of travelling there last time.

Syed1 needs to open his heart like I have

You guys are far to passionate to be watching this loser side being dished out a solid phainti..

I only check the score from time to time and it is getting from bad to worse

Time for Azhar to bowl Smith through the gate with a googly from hell

But, but, but... Wahab should be dropped. Trash bowler.

:wahab2:wahab2

Hold your horses sir. The scoreline still reads 204/2 :klopp

Wahab is definitely better than Sohail, Imran and Rahat. And on this tour better than Amir as well.

Amir is bowling pretty good aside from wickets. Last match, he was unlucky. Could've easily had 5 to 6 wickets last match if he had those edges

Nah man.. It's wickets that matter. Beating the bat doesn't win you matches.

Lmaoo the sacrifice might be working already, IK seems to have found his line and we aren't getting hammered anymore. :))

I have my methods as does my lawyer :afridi In his 3rd spell has given only 11 runs in 5 overs

None of our pacers would get into the Aus, SA or Eng team.

Why a part timer is bowling when a new batsman has come in?

Imran finished his spell, Amir can't bowl yet because he was off the field for too long and Yasir has bowled garbage.

Wahab is definitely better than Sohail, Imran and Rahat. And on this tour better than Amir as well.

Australia have lost two wickets in this innings so far and Wahab Riaz got both of those wickets.

Economies:

Azhar Ali- 3.78
Yasir Shah- 4.50
Wahab Riaz- 2.92
Imran Khan- 4.66
Mohammad Amir- 4.85

Just shows that he has bowled best out of the lot.

next match he is going to break his 8 no balls record lmao!
Still nothing special. Needed these wickets earlier. Damage is already done.

And whose fault is that? Certainly not Wahab. The overrated Amir was toothless again. I'm not Wahab's biggest fan but at least he picks up wickets and bowls important spells from time to time. The same can't be said about the overrated golden boy who should be dropped asap.

Only important spells wahab bowled are 2011 WC against India and Watson's spell. Still being selected because of those lol

I disagree.
SA for sure. Other two, Shami will easily walk in as 3rd seamer in either of those teams. Bhuvi can replace bird or Anderson( if Eng play abroad). Sharma and Yadav are not too far away. decent 3rd/4th seamer options.

Doesn't matter if they get into another team anyway. They give a lot of options to the Indian team.

He's a million times better than the rubbish bowler who injures himself without bowling full ten overs and keeps getting selected only because of his height.

Now, I am sure Misbah is going to WI. Only reason to bring Asad now with cloud covered & Smith just in is over rate - he is on border line, must comply with over rate to play next Test.

Someone please give me better explanation.

1) Compare their avg. vs Shami's avg.
2) How can you objectively say we have progressed when we had atleast one pacer who was better than anyone in the team now nor can any pacer in our team can make it in other tteams with good pacers ?

Man you are talking it personal. Irfan is not even on this squad lol. I am just saying wahab is not showing consistency. People are hyping him with wickets like these like he just won us a match or something.

Can't believe it myself that Misbah actually brought on Asad Shafiq. Hopefully he gets a longer spell as he can maybe trouble Matt Renshaw.

boy just logged in and cant believe that Pakistan has already given the match away .

Sir the captain can't wait for the match to be over and hang his boots. This is what you get when you have a captain who has no more will to fight.

With due respect sir, he is better than the bowler who is really good but consistently beats the bat.

And somehow people still think he is future ATG.

I am not a fan of Wahab, but he always picks up some sort of wickets.

The other one, just looks like "The Chosen One" and has nothing to show.

And today his bowling was atrocious even for a diehard Amir fan.

Rayman why bother, the match is done. Its for the first time I can say in my life that this team is shamefully pathetic.

Are you sure sir?

Last I heard he was thinking about West Indies because there is no one to lead the team in the tough tour to the Caribbean.

I have to stay up for another 1.5 hours. Otherwise I would go to sleep. Watching this match as entertainment is like doing homework on vacation.

It would be pathetic if this loser continues even after this performance.

And as for the next tough tour, well there is always going to be a "next tough tour" round the corner. This is the sort of mentality which has allowed a guy like Misbah to play till the prime age of 42, when he wasn't even that good of a batsman let alone captain.

2 wickets here then scorecard won't look too bad and Pakistan can have to bowl out Aus within a reasonable total. But I don't see them even trying here. Need to up their game after tea.

That's true. Windies just beat us in Sharjah and they will be deadly at home. Can't throw Azhar straight into the fire.

Misbah will do what IK and all other captains couldn't do in WI.

Yes, we should wait for Pakistan's match against the Teletubbies before giving azhar the captaincy.

It's next to impossible to get Steve Smith out (at least before he scores his century).

In many many Tests, 224/2 at tea has gone to 278/3 before 2nd ball & 302/6 at stumps - over night rest & 343 all-out next morning. Then bat well & get within 50 runs - the game is open.

Here PAK might surrender the day at 343/4......

Sir Pakistan already raised the white flag, by giving Asad a bowl.

No, I should rephrase myself, Misbah already raised the white flag.

May be, he is planning for WI. Last Test PAK's over rate was slow, if it happens here again, Misbah will miss out 1st Test against WI ..................

If Pakistan make the miracle of getting Australia bowled out for 350 odd, who is going to make the runs?

Sharjeel? Misbah? Younis?

Don't kid yourself.

This team is going to fold for 250 then.

Exactly, I don't think that game is gone so surprised to see coupe of part timers bowling here within first two sessions of test. Bowlers shouldn't be tired just after one session.

I think that was one of the good moves from Misbah in this series since Renshaw is a left-handed batsman and we have no other off-spinners in the team.

250 isn't bad man. As long as we get anywhere near 270, our ATG bowling attack will take care of the rest.

I think Aus not getting more than 100 runs lead is not a bad outcome based on match situation.

Misbah thought this from the moment he lost the toss. So far, I have seen only one tactis from him in 6 years - win toss (must say he is great at that), bat at snails pace; post a good total - then bowl tight & stop scoring, rather than trying to get wicket - Yasir & time'll eventually take 10 wickets - bat again regardless of follow-on possibility, take the target beyond reach & do the 1st innings exercise once more.

This can only work in UAE, though it back fired few times. Few times he has gone outside UAE, it went horribly wrong - fewer times that his side could make a match out of it outside Asia - at Kandy, at Khulna, at New Lands, at Birmingham, at MCG, at Traofrd,at St. Kitts ................. at Harare.
