New Zealand have a chance of claiming the No.1 spot for the first time in the MRF Tyres ICC Test Team Rankings if they beat Pakistan in the second Test at the Hagley Oval.

Overview

New Zealand v Pakistan, 2nd Test
Hagley Oval, Christchurch
Sunday, 3 January – Thursday, 7 January, 11.00am local time, 10:00pm GMT

A lot has gone right for New Zealand in the last few days. They beat Pakistan in the first Test of the series at the Bay Oval, a close hard-fought finish that has brought them inches away from the top spot in the Test rankings. Their captain, Kane Williamson, is the new No.1 Test batsman and they have a good chance of improving their position in the ICC World Test Championship standings and booking their place in the final.

They will go into the second Test with that confidence and riding on the form of their top players. They have a solid batting line-up, capable of churning out big scores. Their bowling attack is equally good with plenty of options. Their fast bowlers, especially, have been terrific of late. While they will miss Neil Wagner, who fractured his toes in the first match, they will be boosted by the presence of Matt Henry, who has done well recently for the New Zealand A side.

"Matt has been in good form with the ball having recently taken 6/53 for New Zealand A against the Pakistan Shaheens in December," New Zealand head coach Gary Stead had said. "We're still a couple of days out from the Test, so need to take a look at the surface while also assessing our options for best-possible team make-up."

Pakistan are a force to be reckoned with even though their lack of consistency might be an issue. Their brave fightback in the first Test fell short but they are capable of beating the best of teams on any given day. They will be yet again be without the services of regular captain Babar Azam, who has returned to training but is still recovering from a thumb fracture. Another worry for them is the form of their openers, Shan Masood and Abid Ali. While Abid has performed decently in his brief Test career, Shan has not even crossed 20 in his last six innings. If they decide to shuffle things up, the visitors might hand a debut to Imran Butt, who has been exceptional in the domestic tournaments over the past year.

Remember the last time:

The Bay Oval Test turned into an exciting spectacle with all three results possible going into the final day. Fawad Alam and Mohammad Rizwan had strengthened Pakistan's position in the first two sessions but their wickets at the beginning of the final session sparked a dramatic turnaround. The Pakistan tail then almost pulled off a draw when the last-wicket pair of Naseem Shah and Shaheen Afridi resisted for 47 balls but the rejuvenated New Zealand bowlers stuck to their plan and picked up the final wicket with less than five overs left in the day, guiding the hosts to a 101-run victory. Their win meant that New Zealand not only went 1-0 up in the two-match series but are also on the cusp of displacing Australia in Test team rankings.

What they said:

Kane Williamson (New Zealand captain): "We have had so may close tight finishes against Pakistan. I think the last three have gone to the last 25 minutes of the last day. It was an exciting game [at the Bay Oval] and for us, a huge amount of hard work went into it. It's exciting to get across the line and still be in the hunt for opportunity in the World Test Championship."

Mohammad Rizwan (Pakistan stand-in captain): "We need a little bit of improvement in our top order and then we can perform well. We have done well in the past and can do it again. Runs are due for a few and they will have to score. They have done it before, and I trust them to do it again. I know conditions are tough, but then all they have to do is see off the new ball, stay in, and make big scores."

The Blackcaps have won their last five men’s Tests on the bounce; a win at Hagley Oval would make it six victories in succession for the very first time

Makes no sense

Rizwan confirmed there will be changes

I thought it was weird he said there would be changes. Maybe he meant Babar coming in, when turns out he's ruled out. Because apart from that, I can't see changes. Only options we have is bringing in a debut opener or a debut spinner which I don't think is likely for just 1 test away.

Do we have any other batting options in the test squad that can replace Haris Sohail? He's been looking dreadful.

It was raining most of the day yesterday althought not heavy. Ground is still wet this morning although sun is coming out

I have a feeling we will be put to bat & then it’s all about the early resistance or it’s a 3 day game..

Very interested to see the line up...hoping to see some positive intent with 3 changes to spice things up..

Also some chances of rain during the match... So maybe we would have delay start 🤔🤔🤔

Don’t expect any changes as we all know who makes the call in Pakistan team Captain which is Misbah. He will play same 11 and same result will be there to see. If Pak bat first NZL will blow them away in 2 sessions u heard it here from me.

Changes that should take place are
Abbas out Sohail in
Yasir Out Gohar in
Harris Sohail out and Sarfraz ahmed in

Make Sarfraz wk and rizwan play as a batsmen.

But it will never happen.

I don't see any bowling changes. Top order is simply disaster.

Only one change would be expected (as per some channels)

Yasir out... Zafar in..

Zafar is most sensible change for Yasir , hope he would not be nervous on debut that too in alien conditions. I would replace Abbas with Sohail too as he would do more with the ball, and is also better batsman. That is if he has fitness to play a full test.

Lol win toss and bat first. Throw Azhar Ali in the firing line

I have a feeling Sohail Khan is gonna play but I am not sure who is he going to replace. I expect two changes.

Shaheen Shah
Naseem Shah
Faheem Ashraf
Sohail Khan

My 4 man pace attack for this green mamba

Surely they’ll have a final cut on that grass!!!! It’s Hagley, that wicket has bounce & pace - on top of that green grass.....

They are going for the kill, no chance to draw the game

Test match wont go beyond 3 days specially if Pak bat first

On this pitch should play Sohail ahead of Yasir

I heard this on Yahya Hussaini's YouTube channel and usually that guy is good at getting the scoop on the team. It's a shame with Babar but also have this as a moment of solace that Wagner is not playing otherwise havock lol.

Personally i would not bat an eyelid if Abid, Yasir and Naseem are replaced. Part time spin can come from both Haris and Fawad in my view with Shan being quite handy as well.

Henry bowled well against Pakistan in one of the matches, on this pitch could be handful.

New Zealand have won the toss and will bowl first. Here is Pakistan's XI for the 2nd Test:

Shan Masood
Abid Ali
Azhar Ali
Haris Sohail
Fawad Alam
M Rizwan
F Ashraf
Z Gohar
M Abbas
Shaheen Afridi
Naseem Shah

Good choice to go with Zafar Gohar. Yasir wasn't providing much on these conditions either. So at least we get someone who might be new for New Zealand batsman to face and also capable to bat a bit

Zafar Gohar debuts. A decent change though would have liked Sohail khan

Pitch not as green as it usually is here.

Nz still going with 5 seam bowling options.

Same here, he’s a decent tailender as well, I say accept this challenge and bat with patience. InshAllah you will get just reward with patience.

Congratulations New Zealand on a 2-0 series win.

At least there's Zafar's debut to look forward to.

They dont have a spinner playing at all..losing the toss is a disaster

If PAkistan can somehow score 250 or thereabouts we can stay in the game

Zafar should play every game from now on. Yasir can play as second spinner in Asia if needed. That’s it.

200+ atleast is required to have a game on this wicket. 300 would be great. Anything less and we are out on Day 1.

Thought there might have been a couple more changes.

Very good move in changing Yasir Shah. Congratulations Zafar Gohar, grab this opportunity with both hands brother!

5 seamers for NZ. Biggest batting test for Pakistan in a long long time

Can't believe they have yet again not picked Sohail Khan on a wicket like this.

Misbah is really stubborn and will stick with the combo of Abbas- Shaheen and Naseem no matter what.

So now we’re bashing Misbah for not picking Sohail Khan?

5 seamers for nz , whilst our clueless coach has gone with a spinner on a pitch that looks like a bowling green what old people play bowls on .

Good to see Zafar playing. Might not get turn but if he can extract bounce off the pitch then he could potentially get the fielders around into play (assuming they'll catch when the opportunity comes).

Was it this ground where NZ got ENG to 26-9 or something like that?

Pakistan should open with Rizwan and Faheem and go full attack on New Zealand...

They will be out anyways whether they block or not so they might as well treat it like a ODI or T20

this is where the selection of expanded squads for meaningless series like the one against zim will really hurt pak. gohar is making his debut after he hasn't played a first class game for over a year.

i hope he does well, but a difficult enough test debut will only be made harder.

If I was Shaheen, I’d get padded up right now. No faith in these batsmen especially in these conditions.

“Zafar Gohar 144 fc wickets...his batting average will be the talking point throughout the days play”

These NZ commies sound like some of our posters here

Should have picked Sohail instead of Zafar. Sohail can whack it around a bit as well but his bowling would have been far more crucial on this pitch. Once again, coaching is a professional job and current staff is not up to mark.

What is Mitchell like?
5 full time pace bowlers on green pitch big big test

If I am not wrong it has been few years since Pak played a specialist finger spinner in SENA unlike most teams touring SENA or home teams.

Who else is the coach? Didn't knew there was a change.

Basically, Misbah is the one who brought Sohail Khan in as a backup in the first place, and we were the ones bashing him for bringing back geriatrics. Now he’s made a conscious decision to stick with Naseem Shah (who was the first one in the firing line since the pitch suits Abbas, and Faheem can bat) and we’re now saying he should have played Sohail instead.

I think it’s fine. It’s a good decision to bring Zafar in as he gives more control than Yasir and can hopefully bat a bit more too. At most, they should have dropped the spinner entirely for a genuine batsman and rely on Haris, Fawad, Azhar for spin and Shan for an over or two. The batsman would have been either Imran Butt or Sarfaraz Ahmed, who both don’t inspire confidence on a green mamba - so might as well go with the spinner who can bat.

Medium pacer, kind of in the category of Grandhomme but, maybe with bit less movement.

First target of Pakistan should be to survive the first session without too many damage.

Abdur Rehman was successful in New Zealand in 2011 and was a big contributor in our last SENA away win.
