LAHORE: India Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday used Pakistani airspace for the first time after February’s botched Balakot strike by the Indian Air Force

The Indian premier is on a state visit to France, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain from August 22 to August 26.
The flight carrying Modi, callsign Air India One (AI-1), used Pakistani airspace while en route to France from New Delhi.

The objective of the visit, according to the Indian premier, was to strengthen ties with the time-tested friends and help explore new areas of cooperation.

Pakistan closed its airspace in February this year after a standoff with India in the wake of an attack on a police convoy in occupied Kashmir that killed 40 paramilitary police.

In the aftermath, two Indian fighter jets’ were downed. Pakistan also captured one of the Indian pilots who was later released.

Modi to avoid Pakistan airspace despite getting permission

In June, Modi avoided flying over Pakistan during a trip to Central Asia, even though its airspace was opened as a goodwill gesture.

Islamabad had fully reopened its airspace to civilian flights a month later.

you guys want war?? dont be so absurd. war is not a game. millions will die. i doubt you guys can comprehend that.

Kids play too much Modern Warfare on Play Station and assume war is cool.

I am surprised Pakistan has not closed its airspace for India yet.

Don't believe they can without closing for all. Varun may be able to explain

This is partially correct.

Long story short, there are enough global screws trained on Pakistan for them to make such a move easily in such a case. After their Feb - Jul experience they won't venture back there in a hurry.

Sorry, must be my reading. Could you reword that?

I meant that Pakistan will not impose widespread air restrictions on anyone - India or otherwise - during peacetime after their harrowing experience this year. An unstable Iran to their left makes it imperative for there to be an open Pakistan in the global air corridors - and Pakistan risks a lot when this is not the case, as we saw between Feb and Jul.

Of course, all bets are off in case of a war where the IAF and PAF are trading skirmishes.

lol. Iran has been like this since their revolution. Pakistan can close its airspace anytime it feels like which it has done recently. Which Bollywood movie did you watch?

Pakistan can close its airspace anytime it feels like which it has done recently.

Outside of an all-out war, it will never happen again for the distant foreseeable.

Go get a degree.

Can you give a year since the revolution Iran has been stable?

It doesn't matter. In the airspace context, Iran has generally been very liberal (and relatively inexpensive) over the years, revolution or no revolution. However, the world is never a perfect place - and after recent incidents over Ukraine (shootdown of MH17), Syria (barely standing anymore), the last thing the world needed was Iranian airspace shut (post shootdown of drone) alongside Pakistan. All these countries are an important airway between Asia and Europe and you can't have them closed for business.

There's nothing you can do about the likes of Syria, but Pakistan on the other hand are heavily dependent on both the West and East and are quick to budge. They might have lost a few PR-brownie points telling their peoples that Indian carriers are flying above them, but in the background - them cash registers be jiggling.

Iran , Pakistan or anyone else has the right to shut their airspace if at risk anytime they choose. This has nothing to do with Iran being unstable, it has been for decades.

Business esp for others is always secondary to national security.

If Indians are worried about business, they should stop creating reasons to risk conflicts and war. Indias own business will suffer in the future when ethnic violence is a regular occurrence in your towns and cities, just a matter of time while your hero Modi and his fascist party remains in power.

Iran does, Pakistan doesn't. Pakistan thought they did, but that lasted all of 4 months at considerable personal and economic inconvenience.

Actually, even Iran's right to shut airspace is questionable but that hasn't come to pass yet.

He is the spokesperson I think.

Because it's part of science and technology.

I wasn't referring to his designation. I meant there is no point of tweeting about what is being 'considered', it's been a long time and it looks silly that they are 'considering' these things. Do them and move on, or don't.

He was given additional charge of spokesperson of PM. Like I said, don't talk :shh

You complain about Kashmiris communication blackout and then ask me not to talk. Us North Americans shouldn't be so emotional and hypocritic. I was looking at Fawad's goonish behavior in your parliament with an older gentle man a few days ago. Wonder that's the requirement for being a spokesman

Need to show progress on a daily basis to keep the attention

If you mean Mushahidullah Khan and their verbal spat, he was hardly speaking like a 'gentle man' or a gentleman himself :))

They have some history, so that spat wasn't really random.

Yes I saw the "Shut up" from Khan but nobody was restraining him as they did with Fawad. A minister should hold himself to higher standard I think. Especially Science and Technology Minister. Especially a spokesperson.

As much as i support IK and the government, it's embarrassing to see people like Fawad Chaudhry and Shah Mehmood Qureshi representing Pakistan.

One is a Federal Minister for Science and Technology who believes Pakistan sent the Hubble Telescope into space and the other one is a disastrous Foreign Minister.

IK needs to replace both of them imo.

Is he a fool, wasn't he the guy that wanted to cut Pakistan into pieces.

Bit late. Should have blocked Modi's previous flight.

Don't see the sense in allowing Modi's flight then blocking their President's. There is no comparison is Pak not allowing it's airspace to what Hindutva racists are suggesting. We gotta understand that these are ignorant people who don't realise that blocking our ships means war. Try it then see the reaction.

What are these “risks” that you speak of? :13:

The reason for denying permission was probably to show everyone that they asked permission from us.... and we denied it.

Maybe when you grow up a little and develop an IQ you will realize that even commercial planes have to request permission from every country whose airspace they will be entering.

So any Indian or plane of other nationality has to ask for permission.

For a regular Boeing 737 passenger aircraft, Pakistan charges around $600-$700 a day for allowing use of its airspace for terminal navigation and landing. Around 400 flights use Pakistan’s airspace giving revenues of approximately $300,000 a day. Airspace closure after the Balakot incident resulted in an estimated loss of $2 million.
Nations should keep politics and economics separate.

Good decision.

Now Modi and his aircraft will have to be stupid to fly over Pakistan for the sake of becoming a martyr

Maybe when you grow up a little and develop an IQ you will realize that even commercial planes have to request permission from every country whose airspace they will be entering.

So any Indian or plane of other nationality has to ask for permission.

maybe when you grow up and actually learn about govts dramaybaazi you would this is one of the few idiotic govts in the world that would leak to the world that we today denied permission to someone from travelling.

NEW DELHI: Pakistan will not allow Prime Minister Narendra Modi to use its airspace while travelling to the United States, the country's Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi was quoted as saying by news agency ANI on Wednesday. PM Modi will leave for the US on September 21 for a week-long visit.

"We regret the decision of the Government of Pakistan to deny overflight clearance for the VVIP special flight for a second time in two weeks, which is otherwise granted routinely by any normal country," the foreign ministry said. "Pakistan should reflect upon its decision to deviate from well-established international practice, as well as reconsider its old habit of misrepresenting the reasons for taking unilateral action," added ministry spokesperson Ravish Kumar.

Pakistan had closed its airspace to India after the air strikes on the Jaish-e Mohammad terror camp at Balakot on February 26. But it opted for a partial opening again in July. Days later, its aviation minister said his country suffered loses of over eight billion rupees ($50 million) from the airspace restrictions, reported news agency Reuters.

From August 28 to August 31, Pakistan had shut three aviation routes in the Karachi airspace. Islamabad announced that Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan was considering a complete ban on Indian flights. The closure of these routes did not affect the operations of Indian flights.

Earlier this month, Islamabad did not allow President Ram Nath Kovind to use its airspace during his visit to Iceland. Mr Qureshi attributed Islamabad's decision to India's "recent behaviour" - a reference to the government's move to end the special status of Jammu and Kashmir and bifurcate the state into two Union Territories.

The foreign ministry said it regretted Pakistan's decision to deny overflight clearance for the VVIP special flight, "which is otherwise granted routinely by any normal country".

"We call upon Pakistan to recognize the futility of such unilateral actions," Foreign Ministry spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said.

You wanted this news to remain private? Why?

Majority of Pakistani agree with this decision and rest of the world does not care how Modi gets to Germany.

So why are you upset? does it have to do with IK?

For a regular Boeing 737 passenger aircraft, Pakistan charges around $600-$700 a day for allowing use of its airspace for terminal navigation and landing. Around 400 flights use Pakistan’s airspace giving revenues of approximately $300,000 a day. Airspace closure after the Balakot incident resulted in an estimated loss of $2 million.
Nations should keep politics and economics separate.

And what about politics and sports? About politics and arts? .........

There is no way India would have expected Pakistan to grant this request in the current situation but they still requested for some reason. Seems to be bit of a cat and mouse game.

if i recall correctly, GOI has asked permission for their PM's overland flight to SCO as well and then had pulled last minute for photo op purposes.

Modi's plane can make a left turn, right turn and left turn again to get around pakistan airspace. He doesnt care about fuel consumption or lost time. You really want this to hurt then commercial flight to and from India should be denied the right to fly over Pakistani airspace. To them fuel consumption and lost time does matter

Those 3 turns are costing several hours. You are saying lost time doesn't matter to a prime minister? We aren't talking a few mins, it's several hours. Why did he ask for permission then anyway?

Its not about fuel consumption or lost time, it's just about principle - Pakistan and India are not friends, they were on the verge of war only a few months ago so there's no reason why Pakistan should keep its airspace open for India's Prime Minister. Once relations are normalized and there's a resolution to the conflict then the airspace will be reopened.

After the Indian president's rejection, it was weird for Modi to go ask for permission. He sure must know by now that Pak hates him

Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi on Sunday announced that Islamabad has denied New Delhi's request for use of airspace for Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The Indian government had sought Pakistan's permission to use the country's airspace on October 28 for the Indian premier who will be visiting Saudi Arabia to participate in an international business conference on October 29.

According to Radio Pakistan, the foreign minister in a statement said that the decision has been taken in "context of today's Black Day and in view of the continued gross human rights violations in occupied Jammu and Kashmir".

The minister said that the Indian High Commissioner was being informed of this decision in writing.

Prime Minister Imran Khan will leave for Saudi Arabia on October 28 to participate in the same conference.

Pakistanis around the world and Kashmiris on both sides of the Line of Control (LoC) are observing "Black Day" today to convey their rejection of India's illegal occupation of Kashmir on October 27, 1947.

Frustration, anger and fear have been growing in the region since August 5, when the Indian government stripped occupied Kashmir of its semi-autonomous status and imposed a curfew and a communications blackout. With a brief restoration in some call and text services for mobile phone services, the clampdown has now continued for over 80 days.

India could consider moving their capital to the south fix this problem.

He deserves every inch of Hardship that he suffers at the hands of Pakistani people. War mongering clown!

I hope Modi does something about water treaty now. India is wasting his share of water according to agreement. Denying permission to premier again and again showing Pakistan is using his geographical position as for his advantage, then India has to use his. The river flowing from India is to be use wisely. According to reports this will be next major development in India-Pakistan conflict region.

Pakistan should also ban the pharmaceutical imports from India and teach them a lesson.

Muslim majority towns in India should rename their towns Saudi Arabia and UAE. Maybe then BJP will take care of them too then.

International aviation body on Tuesday dismissed New Delhi’s complaint against Pakistan’s refusal to allow Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi request to travel to Saudi Arabia, reported Indian publication Firstpost.

The publication quoted the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) spokesperson saying, "The Convention on International Civil Aviation (Chicago Convention), which ICAO helps governments to cooperate under, only applies to the operations of civilian aircraft and not to state or military aircraft."

He further clarified that flights carrying state leaders are labelled as state aircraft due to which they do not fall under ICAO provisions.

New Delhi had approached ICAO on Monday after Islamabad barred Indian premier Narendra Modi from using Pakistan’s airspace.

ICAO is a specialised UN agency and its main job is to manage the administration and governance of the Convention on International Civil Aviation (Chicago Convention).

Pakistan denied Modi's request to use Pakistan’s airspace on Sunday.

According to a statement issued by the Foreign Office, Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi said that the decision has been taken to show solidarity on the black day being marked by Pakistan, and in light of the recent human rights violations being done by the Indian forces in occupied Kashmir.

LOL at Modi and co.

Best of luck on your extra 10-15 hour basic journeys. Maybe try speeding through Pakistan on a Rafale without being caught by PAF :)) :)) :))

Maybe they can try when it's cloudy, to avoid radars :genius

Very hypocritical by GOI to think its OK to take this matter up legally. The same GOI cuts ties with Pakistan on all other matters citing tension between the two nations but thinks its OK to force Pakistan to allow them to use its airspace. Whilst they don't have fools running their government like Pakistan did in the past, they still do come across as very childish.

Pakistani air traffic controller helps plane from India

An air traffic controller in Pakistan on Thursday saved a plane flying from the Indian city of Jaipur to Muscat, by guiding it through air traffic during an emergency, a media report said.

According to reports, the airplane, carrying 150 passengers, was flying over the Karachi region when it was caught in the middle of a weather pattern with lots of lightning that could have resulted in a catastrophe, Geo News reported.

Following the lightning strikes, the plane dropped down from an altitude of 36,000 feet to 34,000 feet almost immediately. As a result, the pilot initiated emergency protocol and broadcast 'Mayday' to nearby stations.

The air traffic controller from Pakistan responded to the call of the captain of the plane and directed it through the dense air traffic in the vicinity for the remainder of the journey in Pakistani airspace.

Sources in the aviation authority said that the aircraft had encountered abnormal weather conditions near the Chor area of the southern province of Sindh.

After obtaining permission from Islamabad, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s plane crossed the Pakistani airspace and reached Italy on Saturday, to attend the G20 summit, the Civil Aviation Authority spokesperson said on Saturday.

The Indian premier’s plane Boeing 777, 300ER, K7066 entered the Pakistani airspace from Bahawalpur, passed through Turbat and Panjgur and via Iran and Turkey reached Italy.

According to CAA sources, a special plane of the Indian prime minister had taken off from Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi.

New Delhi had requested the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to use the airspace. Pakistan accepted it.

A two-day (Oct 30-31) summit of the Group of 20 is ongoing in Rome to formally endorse a global agreement for a minimum 15 per cent corporate tax.

The Indian Prime Minister had to go to Italy to attend the meeting, for which it was necessary to use Pakistani airspace.

According to the CAA spokesperson, on the way back from the European country, Modi’s plane will also use Pakistan's airspace to return to India.

Earlier, Indian commercial aircraft also used Pakistani airspace after obtaining licenses.

New Delhi: In a move that will hurt the people of Jammu and Kashmir the most, Pakistan has disallowed flights taking off from Srinagar for Sharjah from flying over its territory.

This is first a violation of international norms-- the International Civil Aviation Organisation's (ICAO) First Freedom of the Air as well as a burden on Kashmiris, who are using the flight the most. The flight will be an hour and a half longer as planes will have to fly to Sharjah via Udaipur and Ahmedabad and overfly Oman. The flight will also be more expensive, an additional burden for passengers, most of whom are Kashmiris.

The ministry of external affairs has been informed about Pakistan's decision as has the civil aviation ministry. The Pakistan government's decision, a top government official said, has come as a surprise as flights had begun from October 23 and there have been flights on October 24, 26 and 28. The ICAO's First Freedom Right grants the right to fly across territory without landing.

The decision is also a setback for Kashmiris and their economic wellbeing as a cargo transportation agreement had been agreed to. The sudden Pakistani decision comes right after a statement by the former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Omar Abdullah, saying: "Good to see the refusal of space usage is a thing of the past."
