We are the only stupid team that deploys this night watchman nonsense far more than any other team…

Why hide Babar and co? Pitch is clearly a beauty to bat on if you play sensible shots. Ball isn’t doing much either.

No, it is because Masood is rubbish who cannot average above 30-31 to save his life.

Only in Pakistan can such a mediocre batsman be not only first choice but also captain.
yea i mentioned this to MIG. cannot have a non performing player as captain. i am not convinced.

What if he gets out now?
The great aus team from 99-05 was against night watchmen. Was started by Steve waugh. He felt if established batsmen cant handle the heat how can a tail ender handle. Even if there were 1 or 2 overs left in Steve waugh era - even then the next batsman would come in and not a tsil.ender

How could you send out a guy who is on debut…isn’t really a cricketer besides bowling to play as your night watchman against Starc etc?
exactly. i want an explanation from pcb. mind boggling crap.

no man. kurram is 6'1

shaheen is 6'5 cmon now. he looks super tall.
Khurram is like 2 inches taller than Saud Shakeel, who isn't any taller than 5'6, what are you on about?

And Starc has at least 2 inches over Shaheen who is genuinely 6'6.

If you wanted to send a night watchman…send Faheem or Jamal. One of them might just bat through tomorrow

Khurram will just eat up more dots (if it works out) and you will have hardly 200 before the next new ball

Shouldn’t expect anything over 40 runs per match from Masood anything else is a bonus.

Main thing is his a upgrade from the previous pathetic captain Aus would have got over 600 with him in charge.

everyone is saying that. i really really hope so. is khurram and jamal like tail enders or ? jamal i have seen bat at times and he looked serviceable but this is australian pitches we are talking about.
so we have babar saud sarfraz agha salman these four can bat followed by faheem shaheen jamal can also chip in so we bat very deep

The night watchman option is the next specialist batsman’s choice, not the captain or management’s

Masood should have been watchful not just striking for sake of intent . There is time for everything . Irresponsible stuff

Pakistan is not currently a good team so yes, that's why he is there. Stating the obvious really. He might not be much of a batsman but I can understand why if he's playing he should be made captain. The more gifted batsmen are not the sharpest tools in the box.

Is he among the top 5 best FC batsmen in Pakistan right now? I don’t think so.

Pakistan is a pretty terrible team, but he is shockingly mediocre even for Pakistan’s standards.

It is not believable that there isn’t a single batsman in FC who cannot average more than Masood after the amount of chances Masood has had since 2013.

You have to pick your best team first and then choose a captain within that team. Mr. Zero Talent doesn’t make the best XI in Pakistan.

Stumps...for someone who has been staying up nights during the winters in London to watch Pakistan tour Australia as far back as the 90s, this has been a pleasant surprise...we may still lose but this has been impressive...

Would have been nice to be only one down but hoping they can bat through tomorrow and we get to surpass them

I can understand the criticism but he tried to get the scoreboard ticking. Want Babar to strike at 80 at least tomorrow and get a hundred

This can work for most teams. Unfortunately, the best XI that Pakistan can pick without Shan consists of players who haven't been to school. When you have such a dearth of thinking and lack of captaincy potential, parachuting a mediocre player but potentially a decent captain is okay.

We don't really lose much. The player coming in ahead of Shan would likely only average five runs or so more anyway.

Imam will never get selected in Aus, Eng, Ind, SA, NZ, SL or WI. Only in Pakistan players like Imam/Usman gets selected due to family/political background.

Debutant Aamir Jamal claimed his maiden Test five-wicket haul to help bowl out Australia for 487 on the second day of play at Perth Stadium. In turn, Pakistan managed to post 132-2 after batting 53 overs and trailed by 355 runs at close of play.

Australia resumed from their overnight score of 346-5 in 84 overs with wicketkeeper-batter Alex Carey and all-rounder Mitchell Marsh on the crease. The two stitched a commanding partnership of 90 before Aamir provided the breakthrough, taking his third wicket of the innings. Carey walked back after scoring 34 from 73, including four boundaries.

Mitchell Starc was the next to return to the pavilion, after getting dismissed by Aamir for 12 off 23, including two fours. Fellow debutant, Khurram Shahzad removed Marsh, denying the threatening all-rounder a century. Marsh fell after contributing a hefty 90 from just 107, showcasing 15 boundaries and a six.

Aamir returned to clean up the tail rather tidily. Australian captain Pat Cummins was caught by Salman Ali Agha at slip to complete Aamir’s five-wicket haul. In his subsequent over, he dismissed Nathan Lyon in a similar fashion to finish with figures of 6-111 with Australia bowled out for 487 in 113.2 overs.

Aamir’s fellow pacers all returned with at least a wicket each; Khurram grabbed two while Shaheen Shah Afridi and Faheem Ashraf got one apiece.

In reply, Abdullah Shafique and Imam-ul-Haq gave Pakistan a solid start with an opening stand that yielded 74 runs. Abdullah was the first Pakistan batter to return to the pavilion. He was caught at leg slip by David Warner off Lyon’s bowling.

Shan Masood, playing his first Test as captain, was the next batter in. He took charge from the get-go, getting off the mark with a boundary on the second ball he faced. He batted briskly to make 30 off 43, including five boundaries, before he was caught behind off Starc’s bowling.

Khurram (7 not out, 18b, 1x4), who walked in to bat as a night-watchman in the 50th over, accompanied Imam (38 not out, 136b, 3x4s) at the crease till close of play on day two.

The third day’s play will resume at Perth Stadium from 0720 PKT.

Scores in brief:

Australia 487 all out, 113.2 overs (David Warner 164, Mitch Marsh 90, Usman Khawaja 41, Travis Head 40; Aamir Jamal 6-111, Khurram Shahzad 2-83, Faheem Ashraf 1-93, Shaheen Shah Afridi 1-96)

Pakistan 132-2, 53 overs (Abdullah Shafique 42, Imam-ul-Haq 38 not out, Shan Masood 30; Mitche
ll Starc 1-24, Nathan Lyon 1-40)

If a genuine night watchman like Noman was in XI. Then it would've made sense to send him. A player with solid defence. But just sending a no. 11 doesn't make it a night watchman.

Pakistan were lucky Shahzad survived.

Perth was always going to be the most difficult for the team. Barring a collapse Pakistan should get 300 which will be a good achievement against Aussie bowlers in Perth.

It's quite possible there isn't a better FC batsman in Pakistan, having watched a succession of clueless candidates try their luck down the years I can easily believe there isn't. That said I don't follow Pakistan cricket much, don't have any idea of the standard of batsmen in Pakistan. It may well be Masood is only playing because he has connections.

But he played a role today, Pakistan did need to get the scoreboard moving once the new ball was seen off. They need to score as many as they can before the next new ball is due.

Shaheen is there no ? He's not an all-arounder, he's also no mug so will not put pressure on Imam like Khurram will tmrw morning.

Same goes for Masood, but at least Imam isn’t captain. Making a bang average player like Masood captain is comical.

It's a sound plan as long as they up the scoring rate at that point, although personally I don't think they needed to wait until 35 overs, 15 overs is usually enough to see off the new ball.

Problem with being too defensive is that the next new ball is due after 80 overs so you need to get a move on at this point.

It's not easy to do that 4-5 RPO rate of scoring that Australian batters do in their own conditions for 2 reasons - their batters are very strong on the short ball and they are up against attacks that are usually slower and shorter than their own. PAK hardly bowled any deliveries above 140 kph.

On the other hand, PAK batters usually play on the lowest bouncing pitches on the planet and they are up against an attack that has high release points, are very accurate and can sustain pace longer than most.

You have to play the long game and look to win the series over 45 sessions rather than look to dominate session by session.

Shan has done pretty well as a captain. In fact, even the commentators praised his captaincy which is almost unheard of in the last 20 years for a Pakistani skipper in Australia.

He batted positively as well and looked good before he fell.

Overall the Shan choice has been the right choice for this series, as both player and captain. We can reassess after the series is over obviously but as of now he was the best choice.

Yes I agree broadly. I just think once the new ball is seen off you can look to score more positively without being stupid. The pitch in Perth is a good batting surface, so Pakistan should look to maximise their scoring before the next new ball at 80 overs. I don't have any problem with the ultra cautious approach against the new ball, the openers did a decent job.

why is it always the mediocre players that actually turn out to be decent captains ?

You can bat at 40-50SR. Rather than getting stuck at like 25-30SR

We still have babar to come hopefully a doubly century from him
Yes babar yet to come but i Don't have much hope from rest of batters like Sarfaraz,Saud And agha so Babar need to Play a impactful innings to change the game .

For Pakistan drawing a test match is as good as a win( in Australia) . Now they are in good position to draw 1st test

The biggest nigthwatchmen tailender is that imam

I haven't seen a more recent cowardly innings than this .

I guess because the greats struggle to understand why mere mortals can’t do the things that come naturally to them. They probably also need to spend more time thinking about the game rather than letting their innate talent guide them intuitively

Sobers, Lara, Botham, Tendulkar etc weren’t great captains.
England’s two finest captains tactically were Illingworth and Brearley — whilst Illingworth was not “mediocre” he hardly set the world alight as a player.

Cook was decent. Strauss was a good captain. Vaughn has a underrated record btw.

Vaughn wasn't the greatest of batsmen but he wasn't mediocre either.

So I guess some quality players are great captains.

Waugh. Ponting to an extent given he struggled post mcgrath Warne.

Kohli was a good captain but not great.

But yes the truly great players often make mediocre captains.

Work to do trail by 300+ runs massive job req from specialists, Shan made a customary 30 pathetic

In the perspective of the past, if we look back, our batting was very decent today.
Shan Masood almost played with a 100 strike rate. And by then end of day 2. We just lost 2 wickets instead of 5

You are overestimating our ability to survive. Lyon can easily get a 6fer.

PAK have to make the most of tomorrow and bat all day. Batting in the 4th innings is a lottery at Perth. All depends on whether the cracks start opening up by end of day 4 or not.

All this talk of run rates is pointless. Just look to bat all day, regardless of run rate, and then bat some more on day 4.

Both of them are better players than Azhar and Shafique at least. Should give these two proper time to prove them. Imam has proved that he is a good ODI bat. Needs to prove in tests. Imam looks solid to me. Masood has domestic got runs behind him ,quite a few. Let's see how he proves himself.

Aamer Jamal has ordinary figures in FC cricket. Must have worked very hard I believe. Needs to be a consistent performer before being considered seriously. To Pak fans, let's not hype him as new Waqar or like that. There are many such bowlers in Pakistani domestic like him even with far better record.

Batting is not hard in Australia. Chanderpaul and Brathwhite batted brilliantly in both the innings. But others succumbed eventually.

Definitely. They have performed better so far than past teams with stars overload. Let's see. Tomorrow will be their acid test. Australia will come hard at them.

Even subcontinent batters with good technique will just love to bat in Australia once set , more than subcontinent wickets. Ball comes onto bat with even bounce.

Pakistan has done a decent job here. Just need to bat entire day tomorrow and game can be closer to a draw. Pitch is very good to bat now. Yes, some more runs should have been scored after seeing off the new ball, but it's not 150/5. 150/5 would have killed the game right there.

Good response from Pakistan. It is still an uphill task for them, but at least they got a decent start. 132/2 is the best case scenario considering Pakistan's struggles in Aus.

A inspired spell of any Australian bowlers can trigger the collapsed .my pick is Hazelwood

The debutants stepped up. But Shaheen couldn't. Had Shaheen lead like a true spearhead. Australia would've been wrapped up already.
It's difficult for him.
He is searching too much. If he was part of a stable 5 man attacks we could just do with him sticking to a good length rather than looking for wickets too much.

Most teams will have a nightwatch man.

I don't care how we do it - I just want this embarrassing Undertaker-esque 0-14 losing streak ended. A draw is nothing to sniff out from a Pakistani POV given our record down under.
Drawing a test match in Australia is as good as a win for Pakistan .they started well now it's up to Babar Azam to stamped the authority of one of the best batsman around the world .

dont get this nigh watchman concept. rubbish. we dont need to put a new batsman under pressure. what if he gets out tomorrow within the first over which is highly likely.
That's his job to see off the end of play.

Longer term if Jamal can bat a bit, he may threaten Faheem Ashraf's place in the team. With all bowlers fit he could be a useful 3rd or 4th seam. He may not have got a chance if not for injuries.

A draw will be huge for Pakistan, not from a historical perspective but also for this particular series. It would mean Pakistan have batted very long and that Aussies have clocked more miles under their legs.

Will reap dividends later in the series.

Match is about even right now, but winning for Pakistan looks hard right now. The entire match hinges on tomorrow. If we can bat out the day at 3.5 - 4.0 RPO then we will be in the drivers seat.

Marsh has completely changed the game in favor of Australia. He and Travis Head are such dangerous batsmen.
They have got a very strong lower order that can make a quick 50s and push the score 150+ from where they are

Head, Marsh and Carey and Green in the bench.

They have got the good start , the ball is 40+ overs old they can score quickly now before the second new ball come they can make a score in excess of 300.. Imam should make it big , no more chacha there to auto select , Saim is itching for his chance

Better for Imam to score runs and concentrate on his fitness, to keep playing intl cricket. Already lost his place in ODIs and now this is the only format which is dangling for him

Yeah, Imam certainly has to elevate his game. He, in my opinion, has had a better ODI career than Test career thus far. If he continues on tomorrow and bats for another session or two, he will probably have saved his spot for at least this series.

Shaheen is struggling big time and should be rested for the rest of the series and play Mir Hamza

The 2 bowlers who played the full FC season have done really well in this inns.

Abraar will come in next test and should be good for Pak to go with Khurram, Mir, Jamal, Abraar , Agha better line up.
