[PICTURES] Motera - World's largest cricket stadium in Ahmedabad, India

The Enormous Motera...
Biggest Cricket Stadium in The World. It can accommodate
3000+ cars and 10000 two-wheelers
GCA have prepared 11 cricket pitches here. Some pitches are prepared with red soil, while some with black soil and some a mix of both.

Looks like a concrete jungle with no facilities, nothing like the MCG, just concrete monstrosity with a roof on it.

Lol.. I have been to MCG. It is big and has the facilities.. but it also looks like a Concrete only when empty.
Its the crowds inside who create vibe. When G is full of 90,000 people.

Imagine 110,000 Crazy Indian fans inside this structure and India winning.. The vibe and atmosphere will be unparalleled.

The stadium looks impressive, can imagine a full house during the IPL would be buzzing, or even pak vs india dare i say even though that will never happen.

Make it to the 2023 World Cup final and you'll see it happen.

any idea of what the pitch will be like?

Prepared total 11 cricket pitches here.
Some pitches are prepared with red soil, while some with black soil and some a mix of both.

Both red soil and black soil pitches as of now a decent grass cover is there on both types of pitches.
Pink-ball needs grass and the pitches are fresh.

Green mat for Pink test.

Many things for the first time here. Gives Eng the best chance to go up 2-1 here.

Yupp!! Just to showcase the stadium we can be out of the world championship lol Thanks to Mota bhai

If England go 2-1 up, it's time to start crying that the pitch is doctored. It's only fair.

They need to have foreign firms design our cricket stadiums. This looks cheap.

The same company that designed Melbourne Cricket Ground and sections of Lord’s.
Populous is a global leading architecture design firm which has also designed sections of Lord’s as well as the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

This.

It doesn't look nice, I don't know what others are seeing other than a massive stadium.

Really bland design, colors are forgettable. The stadium in the UAE (the one with the blue seating) seems more modern than this and they don't even have a team.

Should get a refund because it looks like any other stadium you'd see in the 80s. If you're making the worlds biggest cricket stadium may as well go all out and go with a better design which would fit it. This is very lackluster and bland.

If a midtable football team can get a stadium like this, BCCI/India or whoever funded this can do a lot better.

Seems like a typical desi/half assed job, going for the record doesn't matter about the finer details or the extras to really make it something to be proud of.

This is equally dull, US has the best stadiums. Even the college Football stadiums wipe the floor with most stadiums around the world. Also different kinds - baseball, Football, NBa-NHL

While I appreciate the significance I still prefer the Mumbai stadium to this which is much more modern looking.

Quite an impressive stadium, don't know when PCB will learn about the color scheme for the chairs, the color combination in especially NSK is extremely awful *♂️*♂️*♂️*♂️

This looks equally bad. Don't know what they were thinking with the top row.

Wow. This has got to be one of Populous' worst designs ever. This has nothing on the MCG. Looks exactly like you'd expect a large Indian cricket stadium to look like, rather than something in the class of Australian stadiums, or if England built cricket stadiums as large as their football stadiums.

US stadiums make a lot of their money from selling naming rights. The problem India has is that they're not allowed to sell naming rights of stadiums to corporations. Stadiums can only be names after individuals. The MCA (Maharashtra Cricket Association) International Cricket Stadium in Pune was the most ambitious stadium in India to date and the MCA sold the naming rights to Subrata Roy, but he defaulted on the payments, the MCA found themselves in trouble with the banks over the loans and the stadium construction was never completed.

I like Al Wakrah Stadium in Qatar (though it is football) is a very pretty one.

I know that cricket stadiums cant have retractable roof like Ballparks and football stadiums do and also they need to be open to elements like daylight and winds.

That is true we need to enable Capitalism!

I agree they should apply for a refund. I think they just increased the sitting capacity, interior of dressing rooms, parking size because I can't see any other difference from the last one. Even the chair colors look same. Now compare this to old Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai to new one. That looks cool and newly designed. :inti

Thats the New White Hart Lane built at a cost 10 times that of Motera by a club that generates 0.5 B in revenue each year. Plus they will recover the majority of costs through naming rights. Comparing that to GCA is unfair.

They have clearly gone for the record. And tried to make the best of the facilities they could. Its not that bad, reminds me of the Maracana as I said earlier.

It isn't fair but neither is calling this stadium world-class.

Truly world-class cricket stadiums are definitely possible in India if they're allowed to sell naming rights. Many major companies in India would be willing to spend hundreds of crores on having their name on the stadiums. Once that happens, you will see higher standards in design and construction too. Right now it isn't feasible because there's only so much these state associations get from the BCCI and they only host a handful of high-profile matches every year to make revenue from. Can't spend 2000 crores and expect to recoup that money anytime soon.

On top of the naming rights the Arenas in north America are very busy, sometimes hosting 5 games a week and concerts on top of that. The money they generate can't be matched to these stadium which are seldom used.

Stadium is as generic as it gets but quantity has quality of its own. This will feel alive and spectacular when hundred thousand Indians roar in it.

Yeah its not a typical modern stadium by any means but it gives us the numbers to cheer about. Thats what really the stadium is meant for.

Why have I been mentioned in this post. I am not related to Home Minister Amit Shah

Hang on have they named the stadium after their current Prime Minister????

Looks like a South American football stadium to be honest.

Desis do too much fetishising over capacity. I prefer grounds with character and history like Eden Gardens.

https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/sports/indias-pride-president-kovind-inaugurates-worlds-largest-cricket-stadium-in-motera/articleshow/81187365.cms?from=mdr

President Ram Nath Kovind on Wednesday inaugurated the world's largest cricket arena here, the refurbished Sardar Patel Stadium, which will now be known as Narendra Modi stadium -- renamed after the country's Prime Minister.

The state-of-the-art facility can accommodate an awe-inspiring 1.32 lakh spectators.

The President inaugurated the stadium in the presence of Home Minister Amit Shah and Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju among a host of other dignitaries. It opens with the third Test between India and England, a day-night game from Wednesday, and will also host the fourth and final game of the series from March 4.

Spread over 63 acres, the stadium has been built at an estimated cost of Rs 800 crore and with a seating capacity for 1,32,000 spectators

"We have decided to name it after the country's Prime Minister. It was Modi ji's dream project," said Shah after the inauguration.

The President also performed the ground-breaking ceremony for a sports complex in the stadium, to be named Sardar Patel sports complex, for disciplines like football, hockey, basketball, kabbadi, boxing, and lawn tennis among others.

The cricket stadium opens with the third Test between India and England, a day-night game from Wednesday, and will also host the fourth and final game of the series from March 4.

Spread over 63 acres, the stadium has been built at an estimated cost of Rs 800 crore and with a seating capacity for 1,32,000 spectators, it has surpassed the hallowed Melbourne Cricket Ground which can accommodate 90,000.

"The total area is equivalent to 32 Olympic size soccer fields put together," stated a note from the Press Information Bureau giving specifics of the enormous structure.

The facility, which was closed for renovation in 2015, was witness to some major milestones in Indian cricket in its previous avatar.

These included Sunil Gavaskar reaching the 10,000 runs mark in Test cricket against Pakistan in 1987 and Kapil Dev claiming his 432nd Test wicket to become the highest wicket-taker in the world in 1994, surpassing Sir Richard Hadlee.

Australian architect firm Populous, which designed the Melbourne Cricket Stadium among others, is the architect of the new stadium.

It has 11 pitches made of both red and black soil and is the only stadium in the world to have same soil surfaces for the main and practice pitches.

"As children, we used to dream about the world's largest stadium in India. And now as sports minister, my happiness knows no bounds that this has finally happened," said Rijiju at the inaguration.

"It is one of the most modern sports facilities in the world," he added.

Players from both the India and England teams, who have been training here for the past few days, have expressed their admiration for what they have experienced at the arena.

The ground claims to have a drainage system which will take just 30 minutes from the time it stops raining to drain out the water.

Instead of high mast floodlights, the field of play has LED lights fixed along the perimeter of the roof providing shadow-less light -- a first of its kind arrangement in India.

This is the only cricket stadium in the world to have four dressing rooms for the players so that back-to-back games can be played on the same day.

It also has a cricket academy, indoor practice pitches, and two separate practice grounds with small pavilion area.

It was only at the toss that I realized the stadium is called Narendra Modi stadium. Looks like they did a good job of hiding this news or I haven't been paying attention well enough.

Biggest cricket stadium in the world named after biggest chest in the subcontinent. Yeah ok :rabada2

One thing that surprised me though was about myself:
Watched Amit Shah wave to the crowds forgetting Joe Root being introduced to him :))
A stadium called Modi stadium.
And yet, when the national anthem played, I felt the familiar sting of joy/pain in my eyes.

Even a Gujarati stadium filled with Modi fans, Amit Shah can't kill the country for me.

Try harder Modi-Shah :mw1

What else did you expect from the bigot? There hasn't been a bigger egomaniac than this feku creature.

As everyone knew invoking Sardar Patel was just for votes, nothing to do with Gujarati asmita.

Isnt that how it should be? Not liking a politician ir a party, but loving the country under any and all circumstances.

The stadium is named after Mododo.

We're certainly going to lose.

Plus you only get ghaas-phoos in there I'm sure. And no alcohol.

2 ends in this stadium, Reliance end and Adani end. Truly, hum do hamaare do!

Naming the stadium after current Prime Minister sounds idiotic. But still a bit rich coming from this guy. LOL
I don't think there's any member of his family who doesn't have 5 or 6 buildings /airports/awards in their name

If i am correct Wankhede Chinnaswamy Chidambaram IAS Bindra all named when the person was holding office.

Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award takes the cake.

But that was after Rajiv Gandhi assasimstkon right? Many times awards are named after former leaders in memory but naming for a current sitting leader isn’t very common.

When he becomes PM and names a stadium while in office after himself we can all mock him. The BJP came to power promising to right everything that was wrong about the Congress. It doesn't make any sense to start saying, but they also ....

Also, I've only seen Jay Shah's pics before this and never had the privilege of seeing the guy speak. That promo stunt they pulled during lunch hour was :)))

Not sure how any BJP supporter can justify this guy being in the positions he is in. Or even call Rahul Gandhi pappu anymore with a straight face :rabada2

I actually thought it was a parody when I read a tweet saying the two ends were named the Adani and Reliance ends.

Imagine my reaction when I actually saw that on the tv screen and not just that, but a "Jio Stand" to top that for good measure as well.

I actually just realized - this stadium does not have the conventional flood lights mounted usually on 4 towers in four corners of the stadium.

It features the state of the art LED Floodlights which does not heat up the ground making it uncomfortable for both the players and spectators unlike the conventional flood lights mounted on towers above the stadium.

Imagine India vs Pakistan final in Narendra Modi Stadium. :yk2 :inti

It will be a great spectacle indeed. No better place to take revenge of our CT Finals defeat than beating them in world cup finals in Narendra Modi stadium. But it wont happen though since Pakistan dont have a team to reach finals in 50 overs cricket. :kp

Adani and Reliance paid money via open tenders to get the naming rights. Both belong to Gujarat.

These names were there in the old stadium too.

Names of ends at Wankhede stadium are Tata End and Garware pavillion end.

But in an imaginary scenario - let's say if Pakistan manages to beat India in a World Cup final - what a great way to break the World Cup hoodoo and I cannot even begin to imagine the reactions in India after such a defeat :)
