[PICTURES] Motera - World's largest cricket stadium in Ahmedabad, India

I actually just realized - this stadium does not have the conventional flood lights mounted usually on 4 towers in four corners of the stadium.

It features the state of the art LED Floodlights which does not heat up the ground making it uncomfortable for both the players and spectators unlike the conventional flood lights mounted on towers above the stadium.

Apparently the light in the stadium is way above the required lighting.

The stadium is impressive no doubt.

But the lights went off twice today. Imagine if that happens when a batsman is facing Joffra or Bumrah. It's not even funny to post an emoji alongside.

The same company that designed Melbourne Cricket Ground and sections of Lord’s.
Populous is a global leading architecture design firm which has also designed sections of Lord’s as well as the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Looks terrible tbh, other than the size i dont see anything impressive in this. Not sure what the hell went down here in terms of design. Kickbacks? Dubai stadium for one is state of art in terms of design.

Seems like a typical desi/half assed job, going for the record doesn't matter about the finer details or the extras to really make it something to be proud of.

Modern design and equipped with the latest technology.

Thankyou for pointing these things out because i was feeling strange not liking the stadium and was wondering something was off when some people were going on and on about how impressive it is..

The Spurs stadium cost approximately 1 billion pounds though, whereas the Motera stadium was budgeted at a relatively affordable $110 million. You can't expect all the frills that go with the ludicrously higher costs in Europe.

While the aesthetics of the stadium can be debated - what will be unparalleled- is the sound, buzz and the atmosphere once it is actually full to its capacity - 110,000. It will be maddening - especially if India and Pakistan square off - I cannot imagine any other stadium in the world of any other sport will be able to match the noise levels and the electric energy generated by the crowd.

That i agree with, no doubt.

Any good design should have long flowing lines, which the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium does not. Seems awfully cluttered.

The Motera Stadium is much more elegant and not cluttered like the Hotspur stadium. Also, you shouldn't be comparing a stadium with a seating capacity of 62,500 to one with 110,000. Design considerations are very different.

According to BCCI there were 40,000 fans in the stadium for Day 1's play.

Thanks.

Would you please share the source? I can quote the same when talking about this stadium's capacity to my friends etc.,

Even I saw on Twitter post by “India in Canada” (official Consulate of India in Canada)posted that stadium can host upto 132,000 fans. I’m on mobile, not sure how to add tweet to the post.

Cricket needs for light and air so stadium needs to more open from the top?

Yes, no floodlights. Its the LED lights, the 'ring of fire' as is called nowadays. however, the experts are discussing if this plays in a part in dropped catches...etc. It still is a special fantastic sight....

Went thru some of the above comments on the stadium....
Am gobsmacked @ the negativity of most posters....What exactly do u mean by 'modern' 'state of art' 'lacks character' the colors are too gaudy/pathetic/desi hotchpotch etc...
in reality, I'd like to narrow down as a fan what I'd want when I go to a match/stadium/event.
ideally I'd like easy of movement, ie to the loo, to the food stalls, to most parts of the stadium where I have/authorized to have access.
I'd like a good view of the proceedings, a clear eyeline of whats happening in front, below me.
I'd like to see the replays on the big screen clearly wherever I sit.
I’d like to hear the announcer clearly
easy access to the stadium , transport wise
good easy to find seat/numbering , comfortable seating with 'some' space.
In an indian setting, ideally I’d like my stand/most stands to be covered, ie out of sunlight – but maybe that’s not possible. Even the MCG does not have this, the great southern stand is exposed to sunlight for atleast 6 hours of the day easily.
Anyways, I guess this stadium comfortably ticks MOST if not all of these.
I feel the colors are beautiful, its coloured like the sun rays that is around the periphery of the top tier and is a spectacular when viewed from afar.
when the lights are on, the spectacular 'ring of fire' is an awesome watch -especially when they show th drone shots....
this is comparable and better to most cric stadiums
each cric stadium is diff in its 'character' I mean surely eden park, Auckland is vastly diff from mcg is vastly diff from jo-berg is vastly diff from headingley.
Just feel some people with their nationalistic and polictical inclinations are dissing off something as awesome as this to score points....
What about the other stadia – what do they have that has the ‘in character’ ‘ awesome’ etc…do they have coffe cup holders, beer fridges, personal fans(the ones that throw air) , massage enabled chairs, leg space, arm space, banner and flag holders, a view of the surrounding mountains, ocean, city/whatever else u can think…
just enjoy it for what it is ...and njoi the fact that we are able to put together something as vast and as magnificient....and njoi the cricket on offer....cheers India....:ds

It's an extraordinary intrusion of politics into sport to have a stadium named after a sitting Prime Minister who was formerly denied entry to the USA "for severe violations of religious freedom".

I don't understand why this had to happen. I'm neither Indian nor Pakistani, but it seems strange to politicise a place where people go to play and watch games.

The Tottenham hotspur stadium is as state of the art as it gets that let alone premier league; even the NFL considers it one of the most beautiful and state of the art stadiums.

But you carry on and feel better...

As a West Ham fan - they were my London club when I attended university there - I can say that this will be a horrid ground to watch cricket at.

Like Chennai and Adelaide, large cricket stadia need very steep stands so that nobody is more than 100 metres from the stumps.

The lower level stands at Motera are actually a flat bowl, similar to the Mendoza football stadium in Argentina. It means that almost everyone will be at least 50% too far away from the action, and people in the covered stands are twice as far away as they needed to be.

I'd love to watch a match at Dharamasala - it's an ambition of mine. I really hope to attend a match at Chennai one day after Covid too.

But my least favourite ground in Australia is the bloated MCG - and this looks like that.

By the way, how many escalators are there in the stadium for attending the higher areas of the stands?

West Ham and Spurs both fought to get the Olympic Stadium as their new ground.

West Ham ended up with a flat bowl like Motera.

Spurs got to design their own steep-sided stadium, and theirs is much better for actually watching sport.

Develop a taste of your own rather than surrendering your aesthetics to the NFL. If you must accept the supremacy of US sports leagues when it comes to your idea of elegance, at least choose the MLB!

The Tottenham stadium (in the picture that was posted) looks cluttered.

Adani and Reliance paid money via open tenders to get the naming rights. Both belong to Gujarat.

These names were there in the old stadium too.

Names of ends at Wankhede stadium are Tata End and Garware pavillion end.

I don't know if it's just me but I don't like the names of stadia or the ends of a stadium named after corporate companies. I think it takes away the history of it and makes it look plastic. Would much prefer if the names of the ends have some geographic significance to it like the Nursery end of Lords (that denotes the end where an old Nursery once stood) or the Randwick and Paddington ends of the SCG denoting the suburbs of Sydney on either ends of the SCG. Or ends named after the pavilion and the stands like the Great Southern stand end of the MCG would have been good. Even the Eden Gardens has the Pavilion and the High court ends which sound nice rather than Tata or Adani or Reliance end and Jio Stand which almost sounds like the DFL maximum or the Vivo maximum.

And this is not just limited to cricket. I've always found the name Emirates stadium plastic compared to the Highbury, Arsenal's old stadium. I follow Barcelona and would simply hate if some multibillion corporate company's name was added or worse replaced the name the Camp Nou. It's just a personal opinion though.

In India its nothing new to have stadiums named after people then holding office. Chinnaswamy, Wankhede, Chidambaram are a few examples. There are several stadiums named after Nehru,Indira,Rajiv and others.

The PM addressed the US Congress to a standing ovation and was hosted by the last two US Presidents.

Its funny how you want to pass yourself as a non pakistani.

This is a thought that crossed my mind as well while watching the match yesterday. It's not so much about being close to the action, but I saw that the saucer shape of the ground meant that those in the lower stand were exposed to the hot scorching sun of Ahmedabad and surely that's not going to be a happy viewing experience.

I went to the match at Chennai and the steep stands at Chepauk combined with its almost conical tent like roofing held by cables meant that I was much closer to the action seated in the upper stands while most of those seated in the lower stand had a good amount of shade from the shadow of the roofing system. Not to mention the constant cool sea breeze that circulated around the stadium through the distinct gaps in the stands particularly in the post noon period. Eventhough the weather at Chennai is typically hot, the viewing experience was much pleasant compared to the instances when I've been to the stadium before it was renovated. I think the Wankhede similarly has steep stands and everyone's much closer to the action and those in the lower stands have a good amount of shade.

Watching live cricket in the grounds in the subcontinent is a lot about the viewing experience because the hot climate of the subcontinent means you have to have good aeration and shade to make the experience a pleasant one for the spectators and I'm not convinced those in the lower stands would have the most pleasant experience under the sun. This is a day nighter, so the impact is probably not going to be as much as during a day test match in the summer.

Well naming rights bring in much needed money. If i am not wrong, the first time naming rights were sold in India was for the Wankhede.

Ya I get the practical part of it, it's just my personal liking that I would like names like the Eden Gardens to remain which sound so nostalgic and glorious to me. I would hate if the name Eden Gardens was to be replaced by some multi million corporate company's name that bankrolls the stadium.

I would be opposed to the Imran Khan stadium or the Boris Johnson stadium or the Jacinda Ardern stadium.

It’s not about political affiliation, it’s just that it’s the opposite of being inclusive.

And let’s be honest here: Trump never minded associating with despots - in the time that I have been typing this reply the new US government has confirmed that the Crown Prince he called his friend ordered the murder of a Washington Post journalist.

The fact that this particular Prime Minister was given the same treatment by the same US President doesn’t make him any less of an international pariah. (And yes, many if not most Pakistani PMs were too).

But again, why name a sports stadium after such a polarising figure? Is it really a good idea?

Why don't you find one famous person who is accepted by everyone in the country? If he is popular enough to become the PM, then he is damn suitable enough to be honored by naming the stadium after him.

He is huge figure in State of Gujarat, specially how have transformed the state in last 20 odd years.

I’m also not in favour of naming anything after leader who is still holding office, perhaps could’ve done when and if he steps down and call it a day.

Wish Modi wasn't so humble as he has denied giving his name to projects and always kept the seat he occupies bigger than him. But this is so well deserved to honour a great servant of this country.

What is the rationale behind not being honored when you are in office? All honors should be post retired or even post hunous? why don't we celebrate our living legends? Nehru ji got the highest civilian award while still being in office, and he was a deserving living legend.

I believe the naming of the stadium has been done by the state government. Modi is the ex-CM, and the current CM wanted to honor him.

Whether he is Ex CM or ex PM, shouldn't matter, when it comes to honoring the deserving person.

Absolutely not.

At the last Indian election, the party of the person after whom this stadium has been named:

1. Won the support of 37.36% of voters.
2. Was opposed by 62.64% of voters.

It's dodgy enough to name a stadium after a current, active, living politician.

But to pick one whom 62.64% of voters voted AGAINST......

You could easily find admired people in any country who enjoy the admiration and support of almost the entire population.

To give you two examples:

1. Dr Anthony Fauci has 72% approval in the USA.
2. Dr Ashley Bloomfield has 94% approval in New Zealand.
3. The late Captain Tom or Sir Bob Geldof have well over 80% approval in the UK.

But politicians are a lousy choice for a stadium to be named after, because they are always rejected by a huge proportion of the population.

No leader, not even Nehru won more than 50%. Gandhi was disliked by a sizeable amount. Thankfully world doesn't work around your logic, otherwise countries would stop honouring their leaders and icons.

Which is a reason to be like the 90% of democratic countries which don't name stadia after current politicians!

yes, some wait for their leaders to die before honoring them with a memorial, even though they never matched your criteria (thankfully irrelevant in real world) of being liked by 80% (or whatever your internet criteria is) or more when they were alive.

I still can't get over the fact that he named a stadium after himself...

Is this not deeply insulting to all those that died during the violence all those years ago...to have this mammoth stadium built in honor of the man who allowed the violence to occur?

:))

I knew this was coming. Many liberals in twitter already supporting England and rejoicing India's poor performance so that they can blame Modi. Reminds me of how liberals celebrated on that Ind-Aus game when our players wore the army cap and lost.

:)) Why so defensive and negative.

He is our good luck charm isn't he. India gonna win obviously....

....despite this looming good luck charm. :)

It's not liberals vs BJP, it's decent people vs right wing fascism

Thats your opinion. You hardly know much about India. Your hatred comes from the fact that Modi is a hindu and he isnt afraid to say so.

You forget that pakistanis whine about India all the time, from the PM to the PP poster, hardly anyone gives credence to such views as they are heavily biased.

World largest stadium with smallest of totals...doctored pitches and darters......

The name "Narendra Modi" stadium was so quickly named considering how Modi is a sort of a person who showcases everything he does as a extravagant event .

He visits temple its a big event in India, he does yoga is a big event , whatever he does is a big event but a stadium named under him and is not even in the camera or even visited the stadium during the test.

I was shocked I didn't see him during this test maybe he will be seen in the next test

Also I remember Modi once said he doesn't want temples or any specific thing named under him especially when he is the PM of India, could it be that Modi was against the naming of the stadium after him hence was not seen during the match

I think maybe he was against naming it after him because I am pretty sure if he was the one naming the stadium after him then this test match would have been showcased as extravagant event considering that is the way Modi has been

Although this is just my assumption but I am very surprised not seeing Modi during this test match

He may have. Come for day 3...... But. Uu know. Such poor pitch won't. made it happen... Right then Narendra Modi Trophy..........Narendra Modi Cup.....what next

I remember the shame brought upon poor Viv Richards when the stadium named after him had such a rubbish pitch that a Test had to be transferred to the old Antigua Recreation Ground.

You couldn’t insult PM Modi any more than by naming a ground after him, then giving it such a pathetic pitch that a Test match finishes inside two days.

Is the groundsman a Pakistani? Because he has made a vast new stadium into a laughing stock across the whole cricket world!

Apart from the ugly orange seats on the lower bowl, the stadium looks much better than I expected for the indian standard. My initial impression was poor.

The stadium looks good but people on upper tiers will need a telescope to see what is going on.My experience of big grounds is very bad.The atmosphere is good but I could not see the ball.Had no clue what happened.I enjoy watching cricket on tv more than in the ground.

Thats what the big screens are for.

Orange/Saffron was probably in the plan all along.

Green grass, Orange/saffron and Blue seats, white roof. It has all colors of Indian flag.
However to some people, only orange is visible.

The stadium does look gigantic, I really cannot imagine the atmosphere here in this stadium if India and Pakistan were to square off the WT20 Finals later in the year. There will be an explosion noise - no pun intended - that would be unparalleled.

It was great to see the POV from a regular Indian fans' perspective - him, his wife and kids all seemed to have had a great evening.

It is the same in MCG. Upper tiers on bigger grounds, you get to see less action. That is why tickets are cheaper their... eg. MCG Upper tier ticket is 30 AUD whereas front row seats near to the ground are 50-70 AUD depending on the angle to the pitch.

Upper seats are more fun though as it is a general stand and you can move/dance/shout/drink without distracting the batsmen's line of sight.

It was not named by him and nor he would have requested such a thing.
Considering there are so many stadiums/hospitals/roads named after that Inept Nehru Gandhi family, especially one of the worst and inept person Rajiv Gandhi, Modi at least has done so much for Gujarat as a state in terms of development and infrastructure.

The pitch was a rank turner BECAUSE of the Modi name. Can't have India losing in the first game ever at Modi stadium.

Wow. This has got to be one of Populous' worst designs ever. This has nothing on the MCG. Looks exactly like you'd expect a large Indian cricket stadium to look like, rather than something in the class of Australian stadiums, or if England built cricket stadiums as large as their football stadiums.

Yes, looks like a large Indian cricket stadium. Guess why? Because it's in India.

The orange seats I assume are because of BJP saffron. Stadium looks stunning. Can't wait to watch a WC final there one day.

Do you know like, has Modi has even acknowledged through his "Mann ki baat" speech or through some kind of digital or national speech about the naming of stadium under him?

It is so not Modi thing to be not be in limelight for such a big event like a biggest stadium named after him.

I thoroughly enjoyed in pure entertainment sense, the extravagant event that took place a year ago in this same stadium where "Namaste Trump" event took place

Although I am not so much into the "Modi national politics" but definitely I am a fan of his entertainment and showman skills he possess and he truly entertains us all if not through politics but at-least through his presence on TV screen. I really missed that, I was expecting something like a "Namaste Trump event" but was disappointed

Modi is a true entertainer on screen with his speech, I think he should have at-least done something if not attending the test matches, like giving a speech or I don't know but nothing happened.

Dont you agree? would you not have liked to hear from the man"s own self after whom the biggest stadium have been named?

Not an aesthetically pleasing stadium at all but nevertheless it has a very impressive capacity. I look forward to seeing it packed to the rafters and i'm having a bit of a giggle to myself imagining the pin drop silence of 110,000 people with a middle stump cartwheeling...

132000.

Yes, looks like a large Indian cricket stadium. Guess why? Because it's in India.

Pune stadium almost looks like what an English stadium would look like if they had big cricket stadiums. It was designed by British architects.

Ahmedabad stadium looks cheap.

Lol every month the capacity seems to increase right now. Is there an official figure?

The official count is 110k. But the whisper number is 132k because of all the romance this gorgeous stadium evokes. Lovers will sit on each other's laps. Don't forget this is a perfect place for families with kids sitting on parents laps. What about those corporate box rooms where 200 people can easily fit into a 20 capacity room. Gotto count all of these numbers in hush tones.
