They absolutely dominated the PSL 7 group stage, losing just 1 match, they fell short in the final to Lahore.

Will this squad take Multan 1 step further?

Possibly the strongest squad this coming year.

They didn’t pick any openers besides Masood and Rizwan.

These boys better hope the openers haven’t been found out and the likes of Rousow and David are not batting 70% of the innings

Stable this squad.

Some good signings too.

Should be there or thereabouts again.

Multan
Rizwan
Shan Masood
Rilee Rossouw
Miller
Tim David
Khushdil
Arafat Minhas
Rashid Khan
Sameen Gull
Ihsanullah
Shahnawaz Dahani

They should have picked Saim Ayub

Rizwan and Masood were No. 2 & 3 respectively of PSL 7 top scorers as MS won 9 group games out of 10 and reached the final. No reason to change from their POV, for this year at least.

Adding David Miller to a middle order that already has Rossouw, David and Khushdil gives them the best batting lineup in the league I reckon.

Just need Dahani and Adil Rashid to carry the burden of wicket taking, the rest look mediocre.

I think we have fairly established that the amount of runs the likes of Rizwan, Babar and Masood score are not exactly impact runs. MS’s module of success is the countless times Tim David played blinders to propel them to 220 scores and Rousow sometimes setting in and playing blinders

I doubt they will always have such success from their key overseas players every year.

Also I have a feeling that Miller isn’t fully available and may only play half a season. It could be the same case for David and Rousow

Man some good overseas signings. But poor local signings.

1. Mohammad Rizwan (C)(WK)
2. Shan Masood
3. Rilee Rossouw (F)
4. Mohammad Sarwar Afridi
5. David Miller (F)
6. Tim David (F)
7. Arafat Minhas (E)
8. Abbas Afridi
9. Adil Rashid (F)
10. Shahnawaz Shani
11. Ihsanullah

This was also a very difficult side to name, not many good Pakistani players. Sick of Khushdil & Anwar. Couldn't pick more than 4 overseas players.

Had to pick Abbas Afridi due to his potential as a bowling AR whereas everyone else is basically a tailender, even Rashid who's had to improve is bowling over the years at the expense of his batting. For that reason I didn't pick Sameen Gul ahead of Abbas.

From Multan Sultans:

Ajmal Shahzad returns to Multan Sultans in a new role of Fast Bowling Coach. Earlier, he had served as a coaching assistant during our successful season in HBL PSL 6.

Ajmal Shahzad played all 3 formats for England and is the fast-bowling coach of Trent Rockets, winners of the Hundred, and assistant coach at Derbyshire.

He replaces Ottis Gibson, who is unavailable due to his existing commitment as head coach of Yorkshire County Cricket Club. Ottis has our warmest wishes and will always be part of the Sultans family.

As per reports:

Adil Rashid was roped in by Multan Sultans during the draft in December but since the spinner will miss PSL 8, the 2021 champions will pick his replacement in the Replacement Draft on Wednesday. He will not participate in the PSL due to his engagements with the English team.

Multan Sultans will also get partial replacement players of David Miller, Akeal Hussain, and Tim David.

Rizwan has declined big time in a year, I dont think Multan will dominate the way they did last year.

Absolutely love that middle order of Rossouw, Tim David, Miller, Khushdil. Adding Adil Rashid strengthens the bowling massively, they're the best team I reckon.

Batting wise this team is packed, spin bowling is also covered with some great talent. There issue is gonna be fast bowlers. Except for Dhani, they dont have a good pacer

All-rounder Amad Butt and Kieron Pollard join the Multan Sultans

Exciting young leg spinner IzharulHaq Naveed and South African all-rounder Wayne Parnell are now part of the MS Squad

Supplementary and replacements picks on Wednesday (25 January 2023):

Multan Sultans – Supplementary: Kieron Pollard and Ammad Butt. Replacement: Wayne Parnell and Izharulhaq Naveed.

Wayne Parnell's experience in the bowling department will be key whereas Amad Butt's potential bowling AR role be pivotal due to lack of pace bowling AR in Pakistan. But Kieron Pollard is a great pick, w/ Miller, David and Rossouw as big hitters. What a mouthwatering prospect.

Shan Masood
Muhammad Rizwan
Rilee Rossouw
Miller
David
Khushdil
Ammad butt
Arafat Minhas
Parnell
Ihsanullah
Dahani

This is mouthwatering middle order.Arafat Minhas should play most games.plenty of all rounders who can provide 5/6th bowling option.

Semi Final is a must for this team.

It will be tough to pick thier 4 foreign players

Millner,David,Rossouw are garranteed starters then its between Parnel or pollard.

I thought Adil Rashid isnt avaliable.

Final squad:

Mohammad Rizwan, Khushdil Shah, Rilee Rossouw, Shan Masood, Shahnawaz Dahani, Tim David, Abbas Afridi, Ihsanullah, David Miller, Josh Little, Akeal Hosein, Usama Mir, Usman Khan, Sameen Gul, Anwar Ali, Mohammad Sarwar, Adil Rashid, Arafat Minhas, Kieron Pollard, Ammad Butt

Wayne Parnell (partial/full replacement for Adil Rashid), Izharulhaq Naveed (partial replacement for David Miller)

So far look like the strongest team on paper. Only if they can figure out the bowling.

They will rely on part timers most likely.

Rizwan
Usman khan
Shan
Rossow
Tim David
Miller
Kushdil
Ammad
Rashid
Dahani
Abbas

Multan Sultans

Last year’s runners up and the winners of the 6th edition have once again assembled a squad good enough to challenge for the title or qualify for the play offs at least. With the T20i captaincy position in question as well, MS leader Mohammad Rizwan will be looking to stake a claim of national leadership with potentially another successful campaign with the franchise. Questions however have been raised about Rizwan’s self-proclaimed role of anchoring the innings as a T20 opener, and the addition of David Miller into the squad will give the Sultans captain more comfort in knowing that the job can be recovered by the powerhouse line up of Russow, David, Miller and even Khushdil Shah who finds his best form for this team.

The Sultans, with the expertise of their coaching and analytical staff have made some smart acquisitions in the draft. Josh Little and Akeal Hossien are two excellent picks going around in world cricket with the amount of T20 exposure. Also, the opportunity to call upon Adil Rashid as a supplementary pick might help fill the void left by Imran Tahir who was a key bowler for them. With Russow and David as two likely picks out of the four overseas, it will be interesting to see how the Sultans will look to balance out their XI with the other two overseas players to pick from.

Besides the overseas pros, Multan has a couple of exciting local bowlers who are in the pipeline or have broken through into the national side. Usama Mir impressed in the ODI’s against New Zealand and was at times too good for Kane Williamson (one of the best batsmen in the world). Alongside Mir, the tall quick Ihsanullah will look to play the majority of the season and enhance his reputation as one of the best pace bowling prospects in the country.

Full Squad:

Mohammad Rizwan, Khushdil Shah, Rilee Rossouw, Shan Masood, Shahnawaz Dahani, Tim David, Abbas Afridi, Ihsanullah, David Miller, Josh Little, Akeal Hosein, Usama Mir, Usman Khan, Sameen Gul, Anwar Ali, Mohammad Sarwar, Adil Rashid, Arafat Minhas, Kieron Pollard, Ammad Butt

Wayne Parnell (partial/full replacement for Adil Rashid), Izharulhaq Naveed (partial replacement for David Miller)

Multan Sultans made their HBL Pakistan Super League debut in 2018 and have established themselves as the most successful team. Their win percentage of 57.54 is the most amongst the six sides. They lifted their first HBL PSL title in 2021 and were the runner-up in 2022.

With the eighth edition of the HBL Pakistan Super League around the corner, Multan Sultans are eager to continue their exciting run and become just the second team to win the coveted trophy twice.

Multan Sultans will open their campaign in their backyard against defending champions Lahore Qalandars on 13 February. In the 2022 final at the Gaddafi Stadium, Qalandars had defeated Sultans by 42 runs.

PCB Digital spoke with Multan Sultans’ head coach Andy Flower about his side’s preparations and chances.

What has made Multan Sultans such a successful side?

There are a number of reasons for it. Firstly, it is the human beings out there who are competing. So, our players have done an outstanding job by always putting us in a position to compete for the title. Shan [Masood] started the captaincy of Multan when I started with Multan and he did an outstanding job. And since [Mohammad] Rizwan has taken over, he has also been outstanding as a leader. So that’s a good starting point.

The leadership of Ali Tareen, initially, and now Alamgir Tareen has also played a role. I have really appreciated their direction, their passion for Multan Sultans and for Pakistan cricket. Their passion drives us forward to do well. Haider [Azhar] as our chief executive has been the brains behind the operations and he is a smart guy.

We have a really good and solid coaching staff with good local knowledge. It has been particularly brilliant to have Mushtaq Ahmed and Abdur Rahman by my side and get their input and direction. Moreover, Talha is an outstanding analyst with really good, intimate knowledge of not only Pakistani players but of international cricketers and Pakistan conditions.

It is a combination of those things that have worked really well for us over the years.

How did the draft go for you and who are the players to look forward to in your side?

The draft is a hugely important part of the whole franchise process. We are happy with the way the draft went and we think we have a good squad together. The squad we have put together gives us various options of how to balance our team. The coach and the captain are always trying to balance the team and try to give it a stronger bowling line up with as many variations as possible with a fairly lengthy batting order.

We tend to have really high quality in our top six and then a really diverse and hopefully intelligent bowling attack. So, we're happy with the way the draft went and the replacement draft that's just happened. Getting the quality of someone like [Kieron] Pollard in that replacement draft is really important and all-rounder Wayne Parnell

I'm really looking forward to working with Usama Mir. I know Mushtaq Ahmed, our spin bowling and assistant coach, really likes him, and so I am really looking forward to what he can do for us this season. If you have good local players, that gives you the best chance in the tournament. It is not all about the overseas players at all. It's about having good, strong, talented local player.

Shan and Rizwan should not go without mention at the top of the order. They are a great combination and good strong Pakistani men that help us as a team stay strong. Shahnawaz Dhani is super exciting and always great fun to be around. I am looking forward to him getting back into some form.

I am very excited to see Ihsanullah do his things. We saw him as an emerging talent last year, so we used him briefly. I know that he has had some very good domestic performances and he bowls with genuine pace. He attacks a bit like Dahani, so that is going to be very exciting, not only for us, but also for Multan and Pakistan fans. He’s a very exciting prospect who bowls a real pace . And we all know that real pace is very exciting to watch. So, that’s going to be great.

What makes a good T20 side?

Balance is importance. Mostly you need power - batting power. The game is still open to those players who are particularly skillful and intelligent because they can still thrive in this environment. There is not one way to skin a cat.

If you are skillful and smart enough, you can definitely thrive in the top order, in top quality T20 cricket, but getting that balance right, getting the right and left handers to operate together and having good players of spin because spin is so important in T20 cricket these days.

It is important to have a bowling attack that offers a variety of different challenges for the batsmen because that allows the captain to call on different skills based on what might challenge particular batsman in the middle. I suppose people call that match ups these days.

Of course, long batting orders are ideal and with power hitters either side of one or maybe two touch players.

You have worked in many leagues around the world. How does the HBL PSL stand out?

Each league has its nuances and its differences. I genuinely have enjoyed my time in the HBL Pakistan Super League. It has been exciting to see the talent that is available. What really stands out for me is the fast bowling and the spin bowling. In the HBL Pakistan Super League, every side has pace and usually every side has a wrist spin. Some of the batting quality is obviously top notch.

I do really like the fact that the Pakistani cricketing public have really bought in to the various franchises and associate themselves with each individual franchise and, therefore, provide the atmosphere that's so important not only for the players to express their talent in front of, cameras and pass on that feeling of excitement to the viewers on TV.

I think all that stuff is important in developing a great product and the HBL PSL definitely got that.

So, should the Multan fans expect their team to reclaim the title this year?

Yes, why not? They should definitely look forward with hope and expectation. We all want to think positively about Multans’ results. I must say it is important to understand, certainly in our dressing room, that to a large extent, you can’t control results. You can control things like your attitude when you turn up to training or your attitude when you turn up to compete in the match.

Those are the things that are under your control and those are the things that we try to encourage our players and staff to focus on. If you do that well, you have a higher chance of doing well in the tournament. That is how we try to look at it.

I would not want to dampen any of our supporters’ hopes and dreams. We are really looking forward to performing in front of the [home] fans for five of our games this year. We played there before and the atmosphere was sensational. It has a great ground. It has a good pitch. We hope we can make the use of our home conditions, home knowledge.

I cannot wait to get there and to the other venues around Pakistan and then really enjoy an of exciting contest.

Multan Batting is stacked, bowling is decent enough. Mohammad Rizwans batting will actually be one of their biggest obstacles, since he is too slow, just sweeps all the time, struggles on the offside, and has been in batting decline ever since beginning 2022.

But for me they are favourites alongside Islamabad United

I think if they can separate Shan Masood and Rizwan from the opening slot it will benefit him if he's partner is aggressive.

Multan,Islamabad,Lohare should definitely make the semi final.

I was watching the highlights of last year’s final.

Multan have lost Imran Tahir and Asif Afridi for this season. These two were instrumental in their season campaign last year.

If they play all 3 (David, Russouw and Miller), then they can only play one of Hossien, Little and Adil Rashid

I’m suspecting they will struggle this year.

Usama Mir is going to play a lot (and I’m looking forward to it).

Little will also play every game, as he’s the platinum pick. I expect they’ll play a bowling line up of Little, Dahani, Usama Mir plus any two of the following four: (Ihsanullah/Minhas/Amad Butt/Anwar Ali). That’s not bad a bowling line up.

Mir has a T20 average of 29, whereas Tahir averages 19 and Afridi averages 22. So Mir will get more exposure yes but there isn’t anything to suggest he will fill the void left by any of those two

Josh little is a younger upgrade to Willey for sure.

Dahani has regressed since the last PSL and Ihsanullah is still finding his feet.

Interesting times ahead

I recon MS will have to play 2 from Russow, Miller and David

And have to play Little and Hossein

If they drop Hossien for an extra overseas batsman, they could be struggling massively with the ball

They have Arafat Minhas so I personally wouldn't play Akeel becouse he can bowl spin and bat decently well.

An official of Multan Sultans confirmed a news source that Tim David will now join the squad in first week of March and will miss first seven games for the side.

"He will be available for last three games and playoffs, if we qualify," said Haider Azhar, CEO of Multan Sultans.

He confirmed that no replacement has been sought to cover Tim David's absence as Sultans will have services of David Miller to fill the same slot.

This is a blessing in disguise

TD hasn’t been the same player for some time, and MS were already in a conundrum of who to play as their overseas players

Russow, Miller, Hossien and Little

However, MS now short of 3 huge players from their last two campaigns: David, Asif Afridi and Imran Tahir

They have a totally new team this year

Good point - what's happened to him? to Paine?

Good point - what's happened to him? to Paine?

The guy Haider said CA told David to rest before the IPL (basically skip PSL) because he has been playing non stop cricket since last year.

Why are Cricket Australia doing this? Also why are PCB not telling Rizwan to rest? He has been catching flights an hour after a match to reach another T20 league and will catch a flight on the morning of his first game for MS!

Reading that there also uncertainty about the availability of Josh Little.

This isn’t the ideal preparation for a team expected to reach the play offs. And to top it all off their captain isn’t even in Pakistan yet!

I agree - this is very silly.

I originally didn’t write too much into detail for MS in the overall review because I thought they had most bases covered, but a lot has changed since.

If there is one franchise that has problems but are not being highlighted, it’s Multan right now.

1. Considering Tim David isn’t available for the first three weeks, this will have a massive knock on effect on the top 3/4 batsmen for the Sultans.

If MS keep the same opening combo of Shan/Rizwan, I don’t think the two can afford to hang around and just bank on ground shots and quick singles. One of the two has to go big from the word go.

It will have to be Rizwan because Masood tbh doesn’t have the ability to do so. Even if it means Rizwan has to hack balls on the 6th/7th stump line to deep mid wicket or square leg, he should just back himself and keep swinging for the fences
+Masood can just try and bat through

The other thing they can do is open with Usman Khan and Rizwan, and put Masood at 3, this is the position he has for Pakistan so you might as well play him in that position and lengthen your line up a bit.

My BazzBall/Trevor Baylis mind thinks that Khushdil Shah could be tried as an opener instead of Usman Khan but knowing Khushdil, he doesn’t have the heart to dare himself and play outside of his comfort zone.

2. They really need to find 5 proper T20 bowlers, as they are going to desperately miss Asif Afridi and Imran Tahir. Josh Little is a great signing and a lot depends on him to lead the attack and set the tone.

+Dahani has not had the best year in Pakistan colours and the England T20 series may have shelled his confidence. Let’s see if he can find that good vibe form that he usually depends on

+Ihsanullah is a good bowler for good tracks with bounce. However the Pakistan cup final and Sharjeel’s assault on him would suggest he isn’t quite ready yet for international standard. At the end of the day, he is a bowler who offers extra pace on dull tracks.

+Khushdil most likely will bowl a lot, but teams will realise that he is a weak link and needs to be taken down in one of his overs. He is a risky bowler to bank on.

+Akeel Hossien is a good bowler and decent lower order batsman, not sure how much of the tournament he will play. He is a good match up for batsmen like Babar

Multan Sultans pacer Shahnawaz Dahani is likely to be ruled out of the ongoing Pakistan Super League (PSL) due to a fractured finger.

Dahani was hit on the finger, after a shot by Sikandar Raza, during yesterday's match against Lahore Qalandars.

Sultans could replace the pacer with West Indies all-rounder Carlos Brathwaite, according to sources.

Another massive blow

That’s 3 key bowlers out from last 2 year campaign

Now official:

Shahnawaz Dahani has been ruled out of HBLPSL8 due to a fractured finger in his bowling hand. Mohammad Ilyas has been brought in as replacement.

Taskin Ahmed declines Multan Sultans’ offer for PSL 8

Bangladesh pacer, Taskin Ahmed, has revealed that he was offered to play in three games for Multan Sultans till February 26 in the ongoing PSL 8, but decided to forego the offer for national duty.

The right-arm pacer has recently recovered from a hamstring injury and wants to be fully fit for the upcoming white-ball series between Bangladesh and England.

England are scheduled to tour Bangladesh for three ODIs and three T20Is in March. The eighth season of PSL will concluded on March 19.

"It's a very important series. It would have looked bad if I missed any of the matches [against England] after accepting a PSL offer for just a few games. As I just recovered from an injury, it is important to be fully fit. So, I do not have any regrets," Taskin said at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur on Saturday.

Taskin was also unable to take part in the latter stages of the recently-concluded Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) due to an injury he suffered during the tournament.

Ireland’s Josh Little has been ruled out of the remainder of the 2023 Pakistan Super League (PSL) after he sustained a hamstring strain during his time playing in the recent SA20 franchise tournament.

The left-arm seamer, 23, had been set to play for the Multan Sultans in the PSL, which started last week, however he has now returned home for treatment. It is hoped that following a course of rehab he will be fit to take part in the upcoming one-day international series in Bangladesh and the Indian Premier League (IPL) in March.

The Dubliner was the first Irish cricketer to be picked to play in the IPL after he was selected by the defending champion Gujarat Titans in the draft last December.

Commentators currently stating that Tim David will be joining the MS squad soon.

Multan needs to drop Shan Masood and open with Rillee Russow

They lost this game because Masood batted too slowly and as a result they are unable to get the likes of Russow, Miller, Pollard, Tim David enough overs to blast away. They really should have scored 240 today given the start they got.

Suddenly they are looking a very ordinary team aren’t they?

I guess they are lucky Quetta and Karachi have been a complete mess this year

They had a very good squad. However, losing Josh Little, Shahnawaz Dahani etc was going to come back to bite them in these close games.

Today was Millers last game, so it doesn’t matter anyway.

Ofcourse.

Because players like Usama Mir, Abbas Afridi and Ihsanullah just grew in confidence by magic.

Today in confidence

Tomorrow in the dirt.

It takes one bad over, one bad spell from becoming an upcoming star into one who is desperate to impress every game.

Disagree. If you create the type of positive team environment where failures aren’t setbacks, but learning opportunities, those lads come back stronger. This is what Shaheen, Rizwan and Shadab have created in their teams. Jury’s still out on Babar.

Sheldon Cottrell joins the squad for PSL 8

How do ppl here rate Cottrell? I don’t watch much of Windies, so just checking, is he good in the opening overs and at the death?

Multan Sultans’ Akeal Hoseinwill depart after the Zalmi’s match against Sultans today due to international commitments.

Multan Sultans’ David Miller will leave after his side’s last group stage game tomorrow against Quetta.

West Indies’ Johnson Charles will replace David Miller for the playoffs, if Multan qualify for the knockout stage.

Through to the play-offs with a record-breaking chase. Outstanding.
