[PICTURES/VIDEOS] Kusal Perera - Sri Lanka's solid batter

Kusal Perera notches a magnificent half-century against Islamabad United in Eliminator 2 of PSL X. Currently at 55*(31)

I can think of few innings that will ever come close to Kusal Perera's century against South Africa at Durban, 2019. As a batsman, he has already had his 'perfect game.' Everything he does now is a bonus, because he has already etched his name into the history of great batsmanship.

He needs to become a consistent batter. And SL desperately needs to find a proper place for him in the batting order whether it's as an opener or in the middle order.

Probably the biggest underachiever in Sri Lankan cricket history. He has played some great knocks but he should have done so much more across formats. His name should have been etched alongside the likes of Jayasuriya and Dilshan as Sri Lanka’s legendary aggressive batsmen.

It's too late for that. And the way he plays that's unlikely to happen anyway.

It's the GOAT Test knock as far as I'm concerned, especially considering the context, conditions and attack it came against.

Unfortunately , the match didnt involve a Big 3 side so it doesn't get talked about nearly as much as it should.

Oh tu rehnde!

Ngl, that is a mad u-turn. Mamoon was right in 2014 and should have stuck to this position.
I beg to differ. I might have been momentarily fooled by Sharjeel but I’m glad I got back to my senses and realized that he is an awful batsman.

It is disrespectful to Perera to be compared to Sharjeel. His century in South Africa is bigger than Sharjeel’s entire career.

He could've achieved much more. Underachieved. :inti

I thought he would be next Jayasuriya. He also bats like Jayasuriya.

I used to confuse him with Kusal Mendis. LOL.

Kusal Perera is one of the few players from the Sanga-Mahela era. I remember Kusal was the opener during SL's 2014 World T20 victory.

You read the game very well and normally you get these right 9 times out of 10, so I would be surprised if all of a sudden you stopped rating him now.

What did you think of Imran Nazir? Reason I ask is because I think him and Sharjeel were both quite talented players, who were not coached properly.

As talented as Imran was, he was pretty brainless and reckless with developing his batting. He didn't mature one bit from 1999 to 2012. Later on Umar Akmal joined his ranks with the development issue. Imran had insane bat speed and could hit them like rockets. Earlier on, we had the likes of oldies whose mentoring mantra was: start slow then go berserk. So even when there were fielders inside the circle, Imran listened to those silly pieces of advice from our coaches and senior players and was often caught in two minds. His problem was picking swing and variations which turned out to be his downfall. He was caught like a deer in headlights during his final wt20 when the likes of Steyn simply bullied him into gifting them his wicket. Imran definitely was someone who probably had the ingredients but they never got to developmental stages. He batted without any plan from 1999 to 2012.
Sharjeel was relatively better in terms of using his mind for picking shots and when to play them. He didn't have the range of shots that Imran did but especially on the off side but he made it up for it by picking his deliveries to hit. Nevertheless, he would throw away his wicket just after getting set a little too much as well something Mickey was working on with him from that UK 2016 tour to Aus 2017 tour. But after getting caught for spot fixing, he never put that much effort into his game. Let his weight go up too much. His peak was gone, could have prolonged it had he kept himself fit. But a gap of 2.5 years to avail country's facilities is a big dent on a cricketer's development and he just kept regressing.
Imran Nazir went just the way he announced himself. He stayed the same throughout.

Imran Nazir was unfortunate because he was the right player for the wrong era. He would be a white ball superstar if he played today. Not only a great ball striker but also an amazing athlete and fielder.

Sharjeel on the other hand has no redeeming qualities. Terrible fitness, poor in the field and on top of that, a fixer. It is really hard to fathom a person like him having fans because he is one of the most unlikable players to have represented Pakistan.

When he was banned for two years, he still had plenty of time to turn things around. He was 29 when he returned in 2019 and he could have gotten himself fit but he only grew fatter.

Karachi Kings gave him a platform for 3 years and he was average. Even Pakistan picked him for a couple of matches in 2021 and he failed. He had all the time and opportunities in the world to prove that he is good enough but he failed to do so.

His international career from 2013 to 2017 paints a sorry picture as well. Apart from 3-4 matches against the top sides, he has been a consistent failure.
