If we set a slightly strict rule for ATG status, only Steve Smith and Joe Root will be ATG from this era.

From 90s onwards,

Tendulkar
Lara
Ponting
Kallis
Dravid
Sangakkara
Steve Smith
Joe Root

As a test batter??

He was not that great. Excellent but not along the ATGs of this format.

If Kohli had stopped playing tests in 2019, then he might have been considered a test great by people.

Post-2019, he was not that special. There was a slow terminal decline in his form, esp. his struggles against the 'wobble' ball

Yeah but he wasn’t there in that 2020 tour win, which came against the likes of Smith and Warner. His decline also started from there unfortunately.
But he played a good innings in Adelaide pink ball test .he top scored 76 and dismissed via run out.he was reasonable as a player for one last time in that series. Other squad was completely his made up team.we have to give him that for building a strong core and taking care of it.

Sometimes you have to look at a batter beyond just their average and stats. Virat’s energy and impact in Test cricket—both as a batter and as a captain—are rated very highly worldwide. Given the option, most Pakistani fans (>90%) would take a peak Virat Kohli in their Test batting lineup over peak Root or Williamson. I do enjoy how posters here pretend otherwise in these forums and speak in hindsight now that he’s retired.

GOAT Asian test captain with 40 wins.

His legacy as India's test captain is far greater than his own batting.

Post COVID he lost his peak. He never tried to rectify it. Unlike Root, Smith his legacy is far far bigger in limited overs. So his LOI game often influence his approach in Tests. Hence the chasing of 8th stump line continued for 5 years. He could have taken a break from LOI and worked on Tests if he had really wanted to become a legend in Tests. He never did like he did in the early part of his career. But he made 100 times more money in shorter formats than longer formats. WHy would he give up short format. I don't think he had any ambition like "i must make 10000 test runs, 50 centuries, average 50 in career".

As a captain, big impact. As a batsman, 0 impact.
