If we set a slightly strict rule for ATG status, only Steve Smith and Joe Root will be ATG from this era.

From 90s onwards,

Tendulkar
Lara
Ponting
Kallis
Dravid
Sangakkara
Steve Smith
Joe Root

If Kohli had stopped playing tests in 2019, then he might have been considered a test great by people.

Post-2019, he was not that special. There was a slow terminal decline in his form, esp. his struggles against the 'wobble' ball

Yeah but he wasn’t there in that 2020 tour win, which came against the likes of Smith and Warner. His decline also started from there unfortunately.
But he played a good innings in Adelaide pink ball test .he top scored 76 and dismissed via run out.he was reasonable as a player for one last time in that series. Other squad was completely his made up team.we have to give him that for building a strong core and taking care of it.

Sometimes you have to look at a batter beyond just their average and stats. Virat’s energy and impact in Test cricket—both as a batter and as a captain—are rated very highly worldwide. Given the option, most Pakistani fans (>90%) would take a peak Virat Kohli in their Test batting lineup over peak Root or Williamson. I do enjoy how posters here pretend otherwise in these forums and speak in hindsight now that he’s retired.

GOAT Asian test captain with 40 wins.

Post COVID he lost his peak. He never tried to rectify it. Unlike Root, Smith his legacy is far far bigger in limited overs. So his LOI game often influence his approach in Tests. Hence the chasing of 8th stump line continued for 5 years. He could have taken a break from LOI and worked on Tests if he had really wanted to become a legend in Tests. He never did like he did in the early part of his career. But he made 100 times more money in shorter formats than longer formats. WHy would he give up short format. I don't think he had any ambition like "i must make 10000 test runs, 50 centuries, average 50 in career".

GOAT Asian test captain with 40 wins.

As a captain, big impact. As a batsman, 0 impact.

He took tests seriously and that helped the red ball format. Goes on to show how big of a global influence he was. The sharp drop in average dented his legacy which could have been salvaged with 10k but he chose not to stick around.

He was a good batter on flat decks and pitches which had pace and bounce.

Struggled vs seam/swing and spin. Even in his final years, he managed a decent series in South Africa.

One thing India would feel they missed out in presence of Kohli is a test series win in South Africa. Kohli is arguably the best Asian batter to tour South Africa and during his time, they were in decline and transitioning. India should have really find a way to win a test series there with players like Kohli, Rahane and Rahul in it.

I will not rate him higher in Test cricket... He has not done enough..

Whether you rate him or not, Kohli will go down as a bonafide ATG and biggest cricketer of this generation. He is the first and only player to cross 900 points across all 3 formats. If there is ever a legend, it is him. Temu Tendulkar's can score as many soft runs as they want but will never come close to OG King.

This is exactly what he means by rate. Not rating very high in test matches mean he's not an ATG in Test Cricket. One Day Cricket, yes he is.

Tendulkar is among the greatest Test batters in history. Kohli is not even in Top 30. Maybe not even in top 50.

Tendulkar is 2nd greatest batter of all time after Bradman. That debate has already been setlled.

And LOL at Kohli is not on top 30 test batters list. Hilarious. He will be in top 15 in most experts list. Read Jarod Kimber's list for example. And if you add white ball cricket, Kohli will be among top 5 batters of all time.

They were never in decline
sa bowling was as good as ever

Batting was solid enough on seaming tracks m and on flat decks

Exactly.... I am not obsessed with him that I try to portray him as ATG in every format.

In ODIs, he is here on top for me but in Tests? He has underachieved.

Jadeja is a better test player than Kohli. Root and Smith a league above.

They lost to SL and England both home and away. That’s decline. They would have likely lost a test series to Nz in 2017 when Williamson scored two hundreds vs Rabada, Steyn etc but only saved by rain.

Check the bowling that India faced in 2018 and 2021 and compare that to what Sri Lanka and England faced

It’s a whole another ball game

Their bowling has always been outstanding.

They were not in decline

And the latest test series we drew there their bowling was probably amongst their best ever

You know I called Indian pace attack the best goat Asian pace attack in 2018 itself and I said the same for Australian pace attack that it’s the goat Australian pace attack of all time between 2017 to 2024.

All these dimwits here were like ohh nhaaa nha not true lmao. Yea right lol.

And this SA attack that we played recently ? It’s really good. I would say their second or third best at full strength in all time rankings. He’ll I will say second

Give this team just 2 great batsmen’
And they would wallop atg teams of 90s and 2000s
