If we don't win, it's useless to scratch around to bump your avegare. It's a disease that infected Indian batsmen in the 90's: except they were scoring centuries.
IF I have to explain what is the job of a number 5 batsman.....

I hardly remember anyone who scored. and better not state anything before the 2015 comeback since it was just another short run given to him.

He was the most invested player along with Salman Butt during Inzamam's reign... he tried his best to accomodate him throughout his tenure and removed very good players like Asim Kamal to accomodate him

Bro, he hardly played any cricket after King Misbah got the leadership, I remember he was once made to bat at no.7 under misbah throughout the series and was used as a bowler.

I'm soon going to come up with the Misbah Malik thread if I get some time out from my exam preparation and will answer it all their.

Look, I've not been his biggest fan either but he is justifying his selection. Sure it's unfortunate that a player who has been given many chances since 1999 has not delivered, there have been hiccups in between but at the end of the day the onus has been on Malik. But he is scoring runs at present, doesn't that matter to you? well you will say that he will fail in the CT and is bashing weaker teams at present but you can only beat what is put before you and there are other members of the team who've not found it so easy despite the fact that we have faced these weaker teams.

Regardless of what happens at the CT his selection for that tournament is justified (with him being one of our best bats in the ODI format) so the criticisms and disgust every time he does well doesn't make sense to me because Pakistan are to benefit, also understand that partly due to his weak team bashing we're in a position to qualify automatically for WC as well.....not something to be taken for granted when it comes to the ODI Pakistani team.

Honestly if Pakistan wins then thats great but its just too little too late..its taken him 18 years I mean I dont think theres much left to say...
 
Malik does look in decent form and he took us over the line with an excellent hundred.

However, time to move on now. I think he should be dropped permenantly or allowed to retire with his head held high.

Malik at #5 cannot do much when RRR is 10 or above and still 200 to get.

Malik is misplaced in this incompetent team.

So much for the necessity of "seniors" with "experience" if they're a bunch of bottlers when the going get tough.

Hafeez and Malik - our two "senior pros" - god help us.
 
All that average of 50+ since the 2015 world cup is useless when you can't score when it matter
 
You can only have one of Shohaib or hafeez in the team. Shohaib is better at batting but hafeez tips him with the ball these days. But neither is a dead certain for any team except Pakistan. While we have both of them there will always be a weakness in the batting line up. One of them desperately needs to be dropped

There's another option which is dropping both which I'd do in a heartbeat.

Shoaib Malik is only good for bashing Propser Utseya and Elton Chigumbura in front of two men and their dogs in Harare.

These performances matter, not those bilateral scores. This is where you got to step up and perform. South Africa no 1 ranking is pretty useless if they can't perform on the big stage.

This is his first failure in the CT though? He got run out in one and was not out in the other. Must say however I did expect him to turn up, quite disappointed.

I know. In an ideal world you wouldn't have hafeez or Shohaib in team. At their best they were only ever just about good enough.

The problem is that half the team is very young and inexperienced and it's best to cement one place at a time.

When you see talent like, fakhar Zaman, babar azam and hasan Ali you have to wait for them to settle in and then slowly introduce a bowler or a batsman around them. Otherwise you see how Bangladesh were in the 90's and noughties. Forever changing their 11 that just hindered their development. Fakhar is gonna get peppered with short balls in his ribs by plunket then we will see what he's made of.

Right now I think just get rid of Shohaib and bring in a proper batsman. But leave hafeez as his off spin is of some worth and I don't see another off spinner in the country.

He actually was instrumental for SAF win, otherwise PAK would have lost by DWL - made a mess of SRL today, but he makes the team on merit. It was Malik who realized that rain might end the match prematurely, hence he took risk & took PAK's nose ahead of 4th wicket (in case of one more wicket), that was also an elimination match - credit should be given where due.

Babar didn't play in 2013 Champion trophy. Malik didn't perform in 2013 and repeating the same pattern. I again say that he doesn't to be dropped because of his form but that doesn't hide the fact that he failed in another important match.

malik should now be discarded, has been riding on his lucky for ten or more years was finished long time ago

The entire team, as a unit, does not stand a chance against England. I dont know why you are making one player your scapegoat. Hopefully, he is readying your post, and knows that it is his last chance.

He is most senior batsman out there, should take the responsibility. At least show some fight, if he can't do it after 18 years then he will not do in the CWC 2019 so better drop him, give youngster a chance for the next world cup.
 
15 years of international cricket so that he can get stage fright against India and get bounced out by an over the hill malinga while chasing a required runrate of barely 4

Ppl don't understand the corrosive impact of having seniors in the team that are getting bounced out at 130 kmph. Imagine what a young batter in pakistan is thinking when he has to bat with Hafeez or Malik.

For Babar and Imad. This is their first major ODI tournament
 
If Pakistan wants to have some a realistic chance then Malik needs to play higher.

Below is the list of recent wins where Pakistan scored more than 300 runs, It's clear that Pakistan rely heavily on Malik, but Malik needs to be sent up in the order, otherwise, you are just hurting your own chances:

Why do we need a support thread for him? He is useless, he inflates his average with not outs and good performance vs weaker attacks. He has no place in the team.
 
Didn't waste any balls. And have already saved 8 runs in the field. Yes he needs to go, but not before other players in the team. It's ok, not every player works in every tournament. I am just astonished to see the hate he gets. It is almost like people are waiting for him to fail, so that they can come here and bash him.

Totally agree, YK did absolutely nothing in main matches. If my memory serves me right YK made total ~37 run in that tournament.

back to Malik: everyone heard Afridi shamelessly asking Malik to let Afridi score the winning run.
 
I am sure we can filled a youngster who can provide Pakistan with better services than Malik can now at this stage.

My team is Pakistan.

Before this match I had a soft spot for Malik rather than hafeez.

Hafeez stood up when it mattered the most.

Malik could not make it count.

Time to get your favorite performance of Malik on a Blu Ray and let him retire respectfully while he still has some grace.

Time's up for him. Its a shame, I used to be a fan a long time ago and I also felt he was badly and unjustly treated when he was appointed captain. But the warning signs were there throughout his comeback. He would fold under pressure situations and superior opposition. The one thing that he had going for him was that he was the India specialist and he has lost that. I mean even Hafeez has outperformed him - and hafeez is as soft as they get. Its a sad twilight of his career.
 
In my opinion, he should be the only omission in the coming ODI squad. Haris Sohail can take his spot at #4 in the playing XI.

yes time to move on now from malik and if possible hafeez also but i guess he ll stay till 2019 wc so he should start batting at no 6
 
You can't drop Malik.

To accommodate Haris, I like the idea of Babar replacing Shehzad up top.

If not, then wait for Hafeez to flop (hopefully not, for Pakistan's sake).

Also, if Hafeez does get called for chucking (again, hopefully not for Pakistan's sake), that would make it much easier to accommodate Haris.

In any case, Malik is here to stay until 2019.
 
He will probably retire after the 2019 World Cup, but I hope can stretch his career to the 2023 World Cup which will be in India.

Considering his fitness levels and skill against spin, he will remain a valuable player at the age of 41. If Misbah can score a Test hundred at Lord's at the age of 42, Malik can score a few runs in Asia at 41.

Hope he has a century somewhere in him for the decider later this month!
 
2023 will be a bit of drag.

He has given hints that he will hang up his boots after 2019, that will set a good precedence for others in the team to time their retierments judiciously and at a stage where they are still respected as a performer not as someone who is believed to be a burden to the team.

(Hopefully Hafeez will also follow Shoaib and call it a day after 2019)
