I just noticed that Maharaj has worst record against India amongst all major test playing nations. He has least amount of wickets against India, only 11 in 9 tests with SR of 120

Some went OTT at criticism of Pakistan and superiority of Indians. Even Shastri mentioned the win against Pakistan as helping. Yes India are better than Pakistan but some people become a bit unhinged when genuine discussion is taking place and try to blow Indians trumpet too much.

South Africa have been impressive and should not have been underestimated in this manner.
 
Ouch, quite embarrassing. And I won’t call them unlucky on account of Gill because picking only 4 specialist bats was their choice. Imo India lost because of using their T20 selection template for a test. You don’t need 4 spinners however bad the pitch and neither should you ever play with just 4 specialist bats in a test. SA proved 2 quality spinners are enough on a spinning deck.

You don't prepare standard test pitches with Industrial fans. Pakistan is chief doctorer. We can't take a high moral stand here.

Both countries got a slap from South Africa.

Hopefully both will abandon this strategy and we can see proper cricket take place again rather than tiddly spinners bowling over after over.

he is a bits and pieces player on a regular pitch. A very handy white ball cricketer but on a non-spinner friendly pitch he is an ordinary bowler

The Indian fans have the audacity to compare him with Kumble


Kumble would have been lethal on this pitch. He had an immaculate line as a spinner. This pitch is heaven for a spinner with a good line.
 
At least one can safely put the myth to bed "indians are good players of spin"

When faced with quality spin - our guys crash and bomb.....somehow i feel the current lot with the exception of Washy did not show the footwork required, there was no willingness to cross pitch footwork, most guys just tried to plonk their foot down and play straight...
 
As much as the pitch was doctored and you can call it a lottery, but the first 4 odd wickets had nothing to do with the pitch.

2 by Jansen, a drag down from Harmer, and then a half volley for Pant.

SA would have won on any pitch
 
NZ and South Africa have very decent spinners in their arsenal. England and Australia don't.

The doctored pitches will only work against England and Australia, for India


SA has a very good chance of whitewashing the series if the pitch is the same in the next test

His batting is underrated. He's a really good batter. But on non rank turners. His bowling becomes average. Isn't as useful with the ball then.
 
Playing two keepers in the test side is shameful for a country that eats, drinks, breathes cricket.

Money can't buy talent👍
 
Have to say Bavuma is one hell of a fielder.. he make it so easily that tricky catch of Axar.. liked him since that airborne run out..

After seeing Indian batters for past few years. Including Kohli and Rohit in Test.

I actually now appreciate the likes of Pujara and Rahane. They knew the art of playing Test Cricket on all conditions

If you guys keep on doctoring pitches, there is a good chance the SA will whitewash you

SA is like NZ. Not like England or Australia.

Both SA and NZ have very decent spinners. At least one world-class spinner in each side. One world-class spinner against the Indian team is enough...

Yeah, he was the one guy who stayed low, went back and across, criss crossed his legs -good footwork, basically he showed indian guys how to bat on such pitches, and also good leadership....for me he shoudl be joint MOM with Simon Harmer
 
So impressed by this South African side though. It's a young team mostly but they are making incredible strides in test cricket. Not since the Graeme Smith days has a South African side performed this well in Asia. And they are WTC Champs too.
 
Among all the formats of cricket there is no comparison to Test cricket


The T20 players can fool the spectators and provide the cheap thrills but they are nothing when their metal is really tested

This goes for the players of all the countries
 
I disagree with the player of the match going a bowler in this match

it was very difficult to bat on this doctored pitch. Bowling was much easier.

Bavuma should have been the player of the match for scoring the only 50 in all four innings of the Test

Say what you want about doctored pitches and false records but Jadeja is. Or an ordinary cricketer. He’s one of the best in the world. He was quite good in England without whom India would have lost the series.

Kumble is the 3rd best spinner ever after warne and Murali.
 
Gill is relentlessly getting trolled for not showing fight just because he had neck sprain. But i understand it can be pretty bad one. But optics won't go well with fans.

Ashwin is better than Kumble. These kind of pitches started propping up only after WTC started where teams started focusing on points. Before that mostly normal pitches. ENgland series had great pitches. Bowlers had to work hard to tkae wickets. Kumble entire 90s had worse pitches than this. He took advantage of it.
 
I think too much t20 cricket is really hurting cricket. Players have lost the ability to craft out an innings. They think they can approach difficult test innings like a t20 innings just bash away rather than crawl along at 2 runs an over like 20 years ago.
 
How impressive is Simon Harmer though? 36 years old, 1000+ FC wickets and now he gets to script two back-to-back test wins in Pakistan and India in the space of a few weeks.

For South Africa:

First test win in Pakistan since 2007 (obviously no int. cricket in PAK for many years)
First test win in India since 2010

I think it's upto individual how far they wanna go in with the fight.

Personality wise though Gill comes across as someone who is on the lower spectrum of pain tolerance. Which is fine. But for a leader of a team. Ideally you'd want someone who is willing to get rough and dirty and more of a confronting nature like Virat.

Pujara yes, Rahane not.. from current crop Washington looks like good against spin..

Can I ask something. Don’t take this the wrong way but did you actually ever see kumble bowl..I mean not replays or score cards but actually watch him in the 1990’s?
 
159, 189, 153, 93. Total lottery. With one batsman down it is impossible to win. Having said that they should have chased down as only one bowler was posing threat who was reasonably handled well by Sundar.

I have seen. Over a period everyone started treating him like an inswing bowler. His leg break hardly turned. That is how guys like younis khan swept him off the length as the knew ball won't leave him. For all his accuracy and control he lacked variety.

You are underestimating his injuring. Where he is hurting can become a chronic problem if he persists.
Basically, where he is hurting, he can't even stand properly for his stance

I don't know when the next game is. if it's in the next ten days. He will be taking a risk if he plays the next game.
 
Gambhir's building of Test side like T20 side is going to be an epic fail. You can't load the side with bits and pieces players. Harmer and Markram were turning the ball square. But Sundar was given just one over. Strange captaincy. THey are repeatedly ignoring sundar in every match.
 
Bavuma played a top innings. Congrats. That innings is equivalent to 150 on a good batting track. That innings was the difference.

Interesting that the best batsman in the match is Temba, who was deemed not good enough to play Indian owned Franchise cricket in South Africa

The formats are almost becoming two distinct sports now.
 
If Woakes can come out with a broken hand for his country, Gill can come out with a sprained neck. What a chicken.

Yeah I really have to question Gambhir's thinking. Loading the side with 6 genuine bowling options also means that all of them may not get a chance to bowl properly. Especially on a pitch like this.

India's ability to play spin has been in decline since 2021. Even guys like Pujara, Kohli who were regarded as good players of spin started to go into decline during this period. India's command of the conditions and having a very good bowling attack allowed them to keep winning, but in the 2024 NZ series that finally came to an end. Current generation of Indian players seem even worse than where Kohli and Pujara were towards the end of their careers.

This pitch was a lottery. Sundar, KL Rahul and Bavuma were the only ones who looked decent against spin for long periods. Everyone else including guys like Markram looked out of depth. Even Pant ahd troubles.
