South Africa play England in the final Group 1 match of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2021 knowing that a win will probably send them through.

South Africa’s final Super 12 match against in-form England could take on the form of a de facto quarter-final.

The Proteas will go into Saturday’s game in Sharjah knowing exactly what they have to do to go through to the final four, with qualification rivals facing off against the West Indies in the day’s earlier game.

And that requirement is likely to be a win against the top-ranked T20I side in the world.

But for South Africa, such an outcome isn’t out of the question after a Super 12 stage that has seen them impress as a unit with three wins from four matches.

"We are not relying on one or two superstars to get us over the line, our whole team is contributing,” Dwaine Pretorius said. “There's a lot of guys that have got in, scored runs. Our team is in a very good space.

“What astonishes me is how this team has struck together. It doesn't really matter what controversy comes out or what is happening at board level or CSA level. The guys are forming a family.

“We are not going to stop fighting until the last ball is bowled. We are not going to leave anything to chance. That's our promise to each other in the team every day."

For England, only a freak pair of results could deny them a semi-final spot.

But Eoin Morgan’s side aren’t going to underestimate a South African team they have faced frequently in the last couple of years, particularly not at a ground that fails to play to England’s strengths.

"The conditions we had out in South Africa and when I played in Cardiff against them are totally different to the ones that we're going to have here," England batter Dawid Malan said.

"They're obviously a really strong team and they've got some fantastic bowlers, especially at Sharjah, with the way that [Anrich] Nortje and [Kagiso] Rabada bowl their lengths when they bowl there.

“A slower wicket that keeps slightly low – I think that suits them quite a lot.

“But I hope that what I've done in the past against them, I can take that forward into this game with what I've learned from facing their bowlers and how I've gone about scoring against them.”

Fixture details

The match: England v South Africa, Match 39
Time: 18:00 local time, Saturday 6 November 2021
Venue: Sharjah Cricket Stadium

Key players

Jos Buttler, England: The opener’s dismantling of Australia and thrilling century against Sri Lanka set him apart as the form batter of the tournament. South Africa will know that if Buttler bats long then he’ll hit them out of the game, so the right-hander remains the most prized wicket in England’s strong batting line-up.

Kagiso Rabada, South Africa: Taking early wickets will be the key if South Africa are to restrict England. And that’s where the lively Rabada comes in. He’s been operating more frequently in the Powerplay than usual throughout this tournament, and presents a real wicket-taking threat up top.

Ladder situation

A win for England would make it five from five and confirm them as winners of Group 1.

The only way they can miss out on qualification is if they suffer an enormous margin of defeat to turn finish below South Africa on NRR and Australia also beat the West Indies with enough NRR to finish above England.

South Africa are likely to need a win to progress, and NRR could be key, with Australia going into the final Group 1 day on +1.031 and South Africa on +0.742.

What they said

Temba Bavuma, South Africa captain: “It’s been labelled as a quarter-final for us, it’s a must-win game. I think that’s the main point. I guess what helps us is that Australia’s game happens before our game, so we’ll get a better understanding of how we need to approach it. We’ll have an opportunity, somewhere along our game, to control our net run rate or alter our approach.”

Eoin Morgan, England captain: “We’re coming into the game wanting to win, and given some of the situations we’ve been through in the past we know how difficult it is to win a World Cup game without adding different

After some one sided drabs finally a dayof reconing as 2 teams fight for semi final spot.

Hoping for some thrilling cricket

Well West Indies have done South Africa no favours.

One change for England, Wood is in for Mills.

SA would now have to chase 160 in 12.5 overs to go past Aus, reckons G-Stats. Or if they score 160, they'd need to bowl England out for 100.

England win the toss and bowl

England: 1 Jason Roy, 2 Jos Buttler (wk), 3 Dawid Malan, 4 Jonny Bairstow, 5 Liam Livingstone, 6 Eoin Morgan (capt), 7 Moeen Ali, 8 Chris Woakes, 9 Chris Jordan, 10 Adil Rashid, 11 Mark Wood

South Africa: 1 Quinton de Kock (wk), 2 Reeza Hendricks, 3 Aiden Markram, 4 Temba Bavuma (capt), 5 Rassie van der Dussen, 6 David Miller, 7 Dwaine Pretorius, 8 Kagiso Rabada, 9 Keshav Maharaj, 10 Anrich Nortje, 11 Tabraiz Shamsi

Dont think England are a team that can get bowled out for less than 100 in white ball cricket.

I guess SA will need to score 200+

South Africa have to win by 60 runs or more. Otherwise, they are eliminated.

Looking unlikely for South Africa.

They don't need to bowl out. If South Africa score 200. They need to win by a margin of over 57 runs.

SA gotta go ballistic here. No point playing decent or well and posting 160 target or so. Maybe it leads to 100 all out but so what, they're eliminated if they don't post a massive total up.

It's not easy to score here.
South Africa won't even win in these conditions.

SA should have send that pretorius to hammer it. not much initiative being taken to climb the ladder

South Africa is actually playing very well.
If they di beat England and go out the tournament, they would be proud of their efforts.

Only if Bangladesh had not sold it’s soul other day against Australia, Proteas could have qualified.

I think England will lose tonight. Once again South Africa does not get rub of green in ICC tournaments.

England will chase down 170 in less than 15 overs. Markram has wasted balls where Miler could've had a crack.

Saf need to try and get close to 200 as possible. Anything less and it will be hard for them. They shud have aimed for 220 for a good margin victory

SA taking the fight to England. After almost a decade has it made me root for SA. This batting is what their fans deserve to see.

England's so-called formidable bowling line-up being smashed to all corners.

Markram is a great talent. He can become one of the greats in LOs. Just needs to put his head in

Great hitting here, but a bit late in the tournament.

If South Africa can keep England to 131 or less, they will qualify for the semi-finals

Saf shud of Got 220 to have a realistic chance of going through. Also Aus rampage of windies didnt help either. England might even win this match. 220 Shud of been the target for South Africa

This has to be one the best batting performance on a tricky surface. Only butler innings can match this
insane inning from Van der. I really wanted to see SA in semi's and they have show that they deserved it

let's see how they perform with ball

Anyone conspiracy theorist, and I gather there are a lot in Pakistan, coming up with a thread on "questionable decisions by England against SA" ? :D

Overall, really great batting from SAF. Only India has posted a higher total in this tournament against Afghanistan and Pakistan equaled 189 vs Namibia.

Going to be very tough to basically bowl out England below 130.

Hitting the mud at the wall won’t bring down legitimate concerns about Afghanistan

England would go for it and it' not going to be easy on this pitch, Couple of early wickets and who knows

So no chance of Australia and South Africa to progress together from group?

England need to make more than 86 to qualify. South Africa need to keep England down to less than 131 to qualify.

South Africa lost the plot when they took 14 overs to chase down 83 against Bangladesh, that is the game they will look back and regret should they win this game.

In any case losing just one match narrowly to Aussies and yet getting knocked out will be tough to take. They might feel better if England win this if they have to get knocked out either way.

Overall South Africa will be gutted. They've played really good cricket in this tournament.

England will be eliminated if they fail to reach 87.

England will top the group if they reach 106.

SA loss to Aus hurt them they seem to be playing better than Aus but they slipped in the first match and don't have the tournament experience that Aus have who hammered the weaker teams to get a very good runrate. This tournament does not allow slipups. As a Pakistani looking at how Aus and SA have played so far facing Aus will be easier in the semi.

If South Africa restrict England to 131 or less, then South Africa qualify for the semi-finals

England need to score 87 runs to reach the semi-finals

England need to score 106 runs to finish top of the group

England - 12/0 after 2 overs (target: 190).

England need 120 runs from 18 overs to eliminate South Africa.
